The beauty of creation and new growth is here!
Whatever your religious belief, God is Good!!!!

Symposium on March 29, 8:30 to 1:00, at Manchester Community College. Join us and
bring a friend. Free and educational child care for children ages 4 to 12. For more

From April 12 to 17, we are privileged to have a LCI Extension person, Jim Canon, with us.

want to be involved, contact anyone on the Leadership Team. All Lions are invited to be
part of this exciting week.
Then, the most fun event of the year, our Convention at the Snowy Owl in Waterville
Valley, the weekend of May 16 to 18. Registration Form is in this ROAR.
~~~Special treat is the appearance of a seanachie on Friday evening, the 16 th. What is a
seanachie you ask? Come and find out. Friday evening also features a contest for YOUR
favorite CD (instrumental/vocal/dance). Bring it along. All CD’s will be played (in part) and
everyone will judge on the best one. Stupendous gift for the winning person’s CD. How can
you resist? Fun, dancing, singing, frivolity. We have all worked hard for our communities
this year. This is the evening to have fun. Come dressed as your favorite musical
star/composer. The DG threatens to come dressed as Beethoven. No – I won’t make you
listen to my favorite Beethoven Symphony, the 7 th. But, I will have the CD there as an
entry for the winning CD.
~~~Saturday is filled with Memorial Service – Cabinet Meeting – Diabetes walk – Golf
Tournament – Ice Cream Social – and other games.
~~~Then, be at the banquet on Saturday evening to hear PID Stephen Glass’s inspirational
address. Stephen’s wife, Cindy, will be coming with him. Let’s give them a warm NH
welcome to our beautiful state.
Yours in Lionism,
DG 44N Sandra Hurd
“JUST ASK”
NEWS FROM
FIRST VICE DISTRICT
CST CHARLIE
GOVERNOR
MELODY
Good Day Lions and friends,
DG Sandra Hurd has asked us to create menus so that
the visually challenged can order independently
without asking a sighted friend for assistance.
I must say, that I am one of those who have not done
just that. My personal challenge this month is to
complete this service project. I challenge all to do the
same. How difficult would this be to go to a
restaurant, tell them what you are doing, and go home
scribe their menu in large print with a font of 36 for
the words and price in 48 font with no overlaps or
graphics. When complete return with a printed menu
in a folder along with a sign that might read: “The
Hooksett Lions Club created a large print menu to
assist you. Just Ask.” (of course add contact info and
the Lions Club logo.)
Not only are you a “Knight of the Blind” but are
saying that there is a Lions Club near this restaurant
ready to serve.
Yours in Lions,
FVDG Melody
PS Hope to see you all on April 5th at New England
College in Henniker!
THE CLOSING PARAGRAPH OF Helen Keller’s
challenge to LCI in 1925:
The opportunity I bring to you, Lions, is this: To foster
and sponsor the work of the American Foundation for
the Blind. Will you not help me hasten the day when
there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf,
blind child untaught; no blind man or woman? I appeal
to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing,
you who are strong and brave and kind. Will you not
constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this
crusade against darkness?
I thank you. Helen Keller
Happy Spring Fellow Lions!
Here’s the latest on 44N from my seat.
From the desk of
NOTES FROM
2nd VDG
MCC TOM GENO
Dr. Bruce J. Trivellini
My fellow Lions: As I sit here looking out my window, I realize
the ground hog lied to all of us. There’s still plenty of snow for all.
The conventions are only a few weeks away, and all should be
getting their reservations in while there are still rooms available.
These conventions are a FUN and educational time for all. A chance
to make new friends, and renew friendships, SO JOIN US! You’ll
be glad you did.
Coming up quickly is the FORUM to be held at NE College on Sat
Morning, April 5th. This program is two-fold and not just for
training Lion’s leaders. This year we are offering new Lions, and
old, the opportunity to be fully informed as to what Lions do in their
communities, their state, and in the world. In addition there are
courses being offered in how to be a PRESIDENT, SECRETARY,
TREASURER, ZONE CHAIR or even DISTRICT GOVERNOR!
There are multiple scheduling so you may be able to take more than
one course, so you can understand the importance of each and how
you can help your club in being an officer. There’s even a course in
being a project chair. All these courses are short and sweet, you
won’t be bored! An introduction to the new SPOT CAMERA will
also be held, and everyone will get a chance to handle this new
technology and see how easy it is to operate. I personally couldn’t
use the old Suresight camera because I could not hear the beep to
shoot. I learned to use this new camera in 5 minutes. If I can, you
can! The Health Service Board recently purchased 2 of these
cameras one club does have their own, and a few Zones are
considering purchasing their own also. These cameras will all be
under a system of reporting to HSB, so further reports can be made
to International. The interest these cameras have generated is
overwhelming and that is great! We are now able to screen almost
everyone from 6 mos. to 106 years, easily. Something the old
cameras would not do. The HSB will need to purchase more
as the usage grows. The old Suresights are still available and
offer excellent results, so request them also.
Separate from the FORUM, is a course in being a GUIDING LION.
Both Districts are welcome to attend. MD44 is in desperate need of
Guiding Lions, and we hope those in attendance will take this 2
hour offering. Guiding Lions help other clubs, or your own club, to
be more successful and help the leadership succeed.
Don’t forget the “Ride the Mounty” on the Mount Washington
Winnepesaukee cruise coming in June. This FUN event takes the
place of the annual “EYEBALL” FUNdraiser usually held in
February. The Lions Sight and Hearing Board needs your help in
supporting their many projects. Bet you thought you missed it!
Well you didn’t ..yet!
Come join us in these FUN events, and really get in that ol’ Lions
Spirit!
“Have FUN helping others!”
MCC Tom
Spring is here! I think…what I do know is that the
district is moving like a juggernaut as it heads into the
final quarter of our service year. The number of service
Thank you for your service.
I have just come back from the Advanced Lions
Leadership Institute (ALLI) at LCI in Chicago and was
overwhelmed by the knowledge I came home with.
I would love to have an opportunity to pass along all that
I have learned to all of you…so our district can keep on
improving the service we provide to our communities.
Chair: Dick St. Jean 603 623 1035 rbstjean#juno.com
Goffstown: March 2014 will be remembered primarily as the time we lost our most long standing
Lion and our most accomplished member, Lion Larry Emerton, who passed away on March 9. Larry
was not only a member of Lions for 55 years, he was a PID and former club president, whose
enthusiasm, good nature and sense of humor was well known throughout the Lions organization.
Larry lived a life of service to his community, to his family and to Lions. With his wife Lion Elaine
Emerton, Larry was a constant reminder and inspiration that the Lions motto 'We Serve' holds both
responsibility and opportunity for each of us.
It’s Not Too Late!
The Fidelco Guide Dog Open House and Lions
Appreciation Day is on Saturday, May 3rd this year
from 10 am to 2 pm. Tour the campus, meet the
puppies, see K9 demonstrations, take a blindfold
walk with a Fidelco Guide Dog, enjoy the Lions
Hospitality Suite. This year, Lions are even doing
vision screenings with the new SPOT camera. The
DogSight Project will be presenting a check to
Fidelco at the Lions Parade of Checks in the
Hospitality Suite at noon – it’s not too late to have
your club’s donation included!!!
My wonderful new guide dog was bred, raised and
trained at a cost of $45,000. Fidelco is one of the
most financially efficient guide dog schools in the
country. They certainly produce the finest quality
guide dogs! Please be generous in donating to The
DogSight Project and New England’s only guide
dog school. Donations may be sent to DSP Chair
Linda Piekarski, 15 Edgewood Ave, Keene, NH
03431. Please make checks payable to LSHF with
DSP in the memo line. The independence a guide
dog brings to a blind person is priceless. Your
contribution gives that gift many times over. Thank
you!
Respectfully submitted,
LIONS TWIN STATE
SOCCER ASSOCIATION, INC
68 JACK WELLS ROAD, DANBURY, NH 03230
Dear Lion,
Six years ago we accepted the challenge to change by Lions International, and we did. Our
Calendar Raffle has proven to be successful, but we need to have even greater participation
by the Lions in New Hampshire and Vermont. We are mailing two calendar raffle tickets
to each Lion in the two states, and we are hopeful that you will support us again this year;
and we thank you for doing so.
Your response to the Calendar Raffle has been gratifying and we hope this year will even
be greater. If every Lion in the two states bought the two tickets, each state would realize
$25,000 or more, to help those individuals in our communities that need visual aids,
cataract surgery, hearing aids, and provide camperships for children at a camp for the
hearing impaired. These are the things that would improve their quality of life, enable them
to seek employment, help gain independence.
The cost per raffle ticket is only $10 and the raffle is for the month of July 2014. The
drawings will take place on Game Day, July 19, 2014 at Castleton College in Castleton, VT.
The association hopes that all the Lions across each state will purchase the raffle tickets.
You have 31 chances to win and that’s multiple times. If your ticket is drawn, it is
returned to the ticket barrel before the next day’s drawing is done. There will be one
$400.00 winner, one $350.00 winner, one $200.00 winner, four $150.00 winners, eight
$100.00 winners and sixteen $50.00 winners.
The proceeds of this raffle go to the designated charities that support our cause as
“Knights of the Blind” and gives help to those in need and less fortunate. New Hampshire’s
half of the proceeds supports The Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation of New Hampshire,
Inc. and Vermont’s share supports the Austine Green Mountain Lions Camp for the Hearing
Impaired. The kids from the camp are bused in, if possible, to attend the games. What an
inspiring sight it is to see the players and the campers mix and mingle. That’s when you
say, “I’m glad to be a Lion”.
We hope you will favorably respond with your ticket stubs and a check for $20 mailed to
your District Chairperson listed below. Your check should be made out to:
Greetings Fellow Knights of the Blind,
There is still time to volunteer at the NH Lions Recreational Weekend for the Blind and Visually
Impaired in Nashua on Friday April 25th and Saturday April 26th.
We need the most help at check-in on Friday April 25th at 1:00 pm. And we would love to have you
join us for dinner and cards on Friday evening.
Saturday morning April 26th we still need volunteer personal shoppers to take our guests out and
about the Nashua area for a morning of shopping, and we still need volunteers at the bowling alley.
Or you can spend the afternoon at the hotel playing cards and visiting with our guests. Or you can
join us at the Up Reach Therapeutic Horse Arena for a fun afternoon with our guests, fellow Lions,
and plenty of horses.
Make a difference and have fun ~ Volunteer at Vision Weekend 2014 !
Contact Terri McGrew at 673-2322 or terrimcgrew@charter.net if you can help.
