The lives we touch inspire us
To see Xavier in action, you’d never guess he
was born with a rare congenital heart defect
that leaves one side of the heart severely
underdeveloped. If untreated, a child rarely
survives beyond the first hours or days of life.
That was Xavier’s path when an air ambulance
whisked the newborn to UC Davis Children’s
Hospital, where Pediatric Heart Center
surgeons performed the first in a complex
series of three procedures to reconstruct his
tiny heart and increase blood flow to his body.
With two surgeries now behind him, the
bubbly toddler takes it all in stride – and
greets each day with a smile that’s uniquely
heartening.
Xavier and other children like him inspire the
UC Davis team to push the boundaries of

oung Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry is launching a
$1 million campaign to reform the national Republican Party
platform between now and the 2016 GOP convention.
The group’s aim is to strike existing
anti-gay language from the official party
platform and replace it with more respectful
and unifying language.
“It’s time to modernize the Republican
Party,” said Tyler Deaton, campaign manager
for the Young Conservatives for the Freedom
to Marry. “Our aim is to make the national
platform less divisive toward gay people and
their families — and more focused on
unifying all conservatives around our core
beliefs of freedom, family and limited
government.
“The future of the Party is clear on the
marriage issue — a seismic shift is already
underway in support of the freedom to
marry.”

tarting at midnight on May 6, the Sacramento LGBT
Community Center is asking everyone to “give where your
heart is,” as part of the region’s 24-hour BIG Day of Giving
online challenge, organized by the Sacramento Region Community
Foundation and GiveLocalNow.
Sadly, the Sacramento area falls 15 percent
below the national average for giving, so
local nonprofits will participate in the
challenge with the goal of increasing the
number of donors and the amount of their
donations across the region.
“We are very excited to be a part of this
regional effort and hope to increase our
donor base so that we can ensure a bright
future for programs currently offered at the
Center and expand our operations to meet
changing community needs,” said Interim
Executive Director David Heitstuman. “We
are so thankful for the hundreds of people
who have stepped up to give back to the
community with donations of time and
money in the past and hope this 24-hour
challenge will encourage even more of our
friends and supporters to invest in their
community center.”
As a bonus, every donation made on May
6 will be matched by funds from a regional
pool of businesses and organizations.
Additionally, funds raised will be matched by
a pool of contributions from Center board
members. There will also be a variety of
bonus funds challenges the Center will be
competing for as part of the Day of Giving

ME Could Be a $50 Million Boon to Oregon Economy
A
ccording to the 2010 U.S. Census, the most recent data
available, 11,773 same-sex couples live in Oregon. According
to a new study, extending marriage to them would help the
state’s economy by generating nearly $50 million in spending.
“This study confirms that all Oregonians
benefit from marriage for same-sex couples,
not just the LGBT community,” said Christy
Mallory a Williams Institute Senior Counsel,
who authored the study with Williams

Briefly Put
Bill to Modernize Birth Certificates Passes Assembly
Health Committee with Bipartisan Support
The Assembly Health Committee voted April 9 to pass a bill that would modernize
California’s birth certificate system by ensuring LGBT parents can accurately record their
relationships to their children. AB 1951: “Modernizing Birth Certificates,” garnered
bipartisan support, and will next move to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
Currently, parents are required to select “Mother/Parent” and “Father/Parent;” AB 1951
would allow each parent to select “Mother,” “Father” or “Parent.”
“A child’s entry into the world should be celebrated, not marked by discrimination
against the diversity of their family,” said John O’Connor, Executive Director of bill sponsor
Equality California. “Modernizing birth certificates means the next generation will be born
into a California that treats their families with equal dignity and respect.”
AIDSWatch Organizers Honor Members of Congress for
Dedication to Ending HIV
AIDSWatch 2014 organizers is honoring two retiring members of Congress who have
been leaders in advancing public policy that helps to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the
United States.
Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) is a leader on health and environmental issues
and Delegate Donna Christensen (D-Virgin Islands), is a strong advocate for sound,
science-based public health policies and has worked to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS in
African American communities.
“These two Members of Congress have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their
work to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States and its territories,” said Ronald
Johnson, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy for AIDS United, one of the AIDSWatch
2014 organizing sponsors.

Dr. Birx Sworn-In as New U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator
Dr. Deborah Birx was sworn in on April 4 as the new Ambassador at Large and U.S.
Global AIDS Coordinator to lead all U.S. Government international HIV/AIDS efforts.
Ambassador Birx now oversees implementation of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for
AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease
in history, as well as all U.S. Government engagement with the Global Fund to Fight
AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
“I am honored and humbled to lead PEPFAR into a brand new chapter to achieve an
AIDS-free generation through shared responsibility, accountability, and impact.” said
Ambassador Birx.
PEPFAR now directly supports 6.7 million people globally on life-saving antiretroviral
treatment. In Fiscal Year 2013, PEPFAR also supported HIV testing and counseling for
more than 57.7 million people.
Federal Judge Rules Ohio Must Respect Married Same-Sex
Couples
U.S. District Judge Timothy Black on April 14, struck down part of a constitutional
amendment in Ohio that denies gay couples the freedom to marry and withholds legal
respect for gay couples who have gotten married.
He ordered the state to treat couples married elsewhere like any other couples who
marry out of state — as married.
“Couples who are married should be treated as married no matter where they are in the
country, including Ohio,” said Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry. “Couples
should not have to play ‘now you’re married, now you’re not’ as they travel, work, move, or
return home.”
MI Sued to Recognize Marriages of Same-Sex Couples
The ACLU of Michigan filed a lawsuit on April 14 to guarantee that the marriages of
300 same-sex couples performed last month are recognized by the state. The lawsuit was
filed on behalf of eight same-sex couples who were married after a federal judge struck
down the state’s ban and before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals put the decision on
hold.
“As a matter of law and fundamental fairness, the state is obligated to extend the
protections that flow from marriage to all those who celebrated their weddings last
month,” said Kary L. Moss, ACLU of Michigan executive director.
On Friday, March 21, Judge Bernard Friedman struck down Michigan’s ban on the
freedom to marry as violating federal law. The next day, approximately 300 same-sex were
married. A few days later, Governor Rick Snyder announced that, while the marriages
were legal, the state would not recognize them.

Linn’s Stamp News (Linns.com) is
reporting that a black-and-white photograph
of Harvey Milk will be used for the central
design of the stamp and that the stamp
design will include the pride flag colors as
six different color squares stacked vertically
in the upper left corner.
Harvey Milk was a visionary leader who
became one of the first openly gay elected
officials in the U.S. when he won a seat on
the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in
1977.
Milk’s achievements gave hope and
confidence to the LGBT community in the
United States and elsewhere at a time when
the community was encountering
widespread hostility and discrimination.
Milk believed that government should
represent all citizens, ensuring equality and
providing needed services.
His remarkable career was tragically cut
short nearly a year after he took office on
November 27, 1978, when he and San
Francisco Mayor George Moscone were
assassinated by former San Francisco
Supervisor Dan Whie..
In 2009, he was posthumously awarded
the Medal of Freedom by President Barack
Obama.
The May 22 ceremony at the White House
is signifiant in that it is Milk’s birthday and

“The unemployment numbers haven’t been manipulated; there

Sac LGBT Center Enlists New
Development Director
D
by Bonnie Osborn
avis native Julia Robinson, the Sacramento LGBT
Community Center’s new Development Director, hopes to
bring one thing to the Center that she picked up from her
previous job: the philosophy of “giving what feels right.”
“I want to create an environment where
people feel that every donation is important,
that every donation helps build a bigger and
better Center,” says Robinson, who
previously worked for four years in the
Membership Department of Capital Public
Radio. “I want people to feel proud that they
are part of the Center and what makes it
happen. I want people to know that’s how I
feel. That’s the heart of the development
program I want to create at the Center.”
Calling her new position “one of my
dream jobs,” Robinson’s optimism and
energy are contagious as she talks about her
vision for the Center. “I think the Center has
a ton of potential, and I feel honored to be
one of the people that can help us attain that
potential,” she says.
“I see the Center as a cornerstone of the
community and a community resource, and I
want to build on and expand on that
foundation.”
Established in 1986 as the Lambda
Community Center, the Sacramento LGBT
Community Center today serves a diverse
population of youth and adults, ranging from
a Girl Scout troop to a senior leaders group.
On April 23, the Center will reopen the
Q-spot resource center for queer youth. “The
Q-spot is a drop-in center that provides a
safe place for all youth between ages 13 and
22 to hang out with friends, play games,
watch TV, DVDs and YouTube videos, listen
to music, and learn new skills,” Robinson
says. “We will also have the Pride Awards on
the 8th of May that will celebrate our entire
community and the accomplishments
individuals in it have made.”
Robinson graduated with a Political
Science degree from University of Mary
Julia Robinson
Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where
she cut her fundraising teeth making
telephone appeals to university alumni. She
interned in the Washington, D.C.,
Congressional office of Rep. Sam Farr, who
represents parts of Monterey and San Benito
counties before returning to the Sacramento
area. In addition to her work with Capital
Public Radio, she helped with the March of
Dimes March for Babies fundraising
campaign.
Upon returning to the area after college,
Robinson got connected with the Center
through its popular 20-Somethings group in
2011, later serving as a group facilitator for a
year. A former rugby player during her college
years, Robinson currently lives in South Land
Park with partner Kait and dog Leah. A
musical theater player in her teen years, she
looks forward to finding more time to enjoy
Sacramento’s rich local theater offerings.

I don’t encourage folks to drive all the way over to the Bay Area to

of the same name by South African writer, Can Themba.
When a husband catches his wife in the arms of her lover, the lover flees but leaves his
suit behind. As her penance, the husband makes his wife treat the suit as an honored guest.
Accompanying her wherever she goes, the suit becomes a whimsical yet cruel reminder of
her infidelity. African melodies interweave with jazz standards to underscore this simple yet
surprising tale, set in Apartheid-era Johannesburg.
The Suit is described as a haunting work that integrates virtuosic musicians directly into
the action. It will play through May 18 at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre
(A.C.T.) Please visit www.act-sf.org.

Tribes
I have not seen Berkeley Rep’s production yet, but when I saw Tribes off-Broadway in
2012 I was very impressed by the complexity of Nina Raine’s play and its insight into the
world of the hearing impaired.
Never dull or preachy, this humorous drama follows Billy, a young deaf man born into a
hearing family. Raised inside the fiercely idiosyncratic and unrepentantly politically incorrect
cocoon of his parents’ house, he has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways,
but they’ve never bothered to return the favor.
It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that Billy finally
understands what it means to be understood.
Tribes is probably the best play on the subject of deafness since Mark Medoff’s Children of
a Lesser God, which was published in 1980. If you know anyone who is deaf or hearing
impaired, you should take him or her to see this play.
Berkeley Rep will offer at least three ASL-interpreted performances of Tribes, and their
production has already been extended to May 18. For more information, please visit www.
berkeleyrep.org.

Sexy Scarlett Johansson Is Back,
Plus Jude Law Takes It All Off
by Chris Narloch
T
his month I spotlight new films featuring three of the sexiest
movie stars on the big screen – Scarlett Johansson, Jude Law,
and Tom Hardy – plus a superb little sleeper hit from India
and some classic Hollywood films back on the big screen.
Under The Skin
This strange, maddening cinematic acid
trip will mostly be remembered for star
Scarlett Johansson’s nude scenes. Those sexy
scenes are lengthy but tastefully done, and
the good news is that the always-voluptuous
Johansson has a normal body – or normal
for a movie goddess, anyway.
Johansson isn’t one of those rail-thin,
Hollywood bone wrecks we mostly see
nowadays. She has real curves, and her body
looks more like the fleshy sex symbols from
yesteryear, say Marilyn Monroe – the
ultimate sex symbol whom Johansson
sometimes resembles.
The first thing to say about Under The
Skin is that the average moviegoer is going
to hate it. The film is truly bizarre, slow, and
very repetitive. That said, Johansson is oddly
convincing as an alien who roams around
northern Scotland in a white van picking up
strange men to kill.
The way these unlucky men meet their
doom is the coolest part of Under The Skin,
and director Jonathan Glazer and his leading
lady are to be commended for trying to
make something totally “off the grid.”
Unfortunately, Under The Skin is as
frustrating as one of the great David Lynch’s
duds, and despite some arresting images,
this movie will likely not get under your
skin. It actually got on my last nerve.
Scarlett Johansson
Dom Hemingway
I don’t remember Jude Law being so buff,
but he looks pretty hunky in his latest film,
in which he appears completely nude (from
behind). More importantly, the actor’s
performance in Dom Hemingway is also
emotionally naked.
Law plays a small-time crook and recent
convict hanging with big-time mobsters, and
his role is a juicy, colorful character that the
talented actor can really sink his teeth into.
This is the best little British crime film in
many a moon, and Jude Law is on fire as
Dom Hemingway.

The Lunchbox
If this delightful Indian film is still playing
at the Tower (or anywhere else) by the time
you read this, don’t miss it.
Shot in Mumbai, and starring Irrfan Khan
(Life of Pi), The Lunchbox is an old-fashioned
romance about an Indian man and woman
who “meet cute” thanks to some misdelivered lunchboxes, also known as tiffin
boxes, or “dabba.”
If you enjoyed The Exotic Marigold Hotel,
you should love this gentle, sweet romance
from India.
Tom Hardy Alert
F.O.T.H. (Fans of Tom Hardy) will want to
mark their calendars for the Sacramento
premiere of his latest film, Locke, which will
receive a one-night only screening at the
Crest on Tuesday, April 29, prior to its
theatrical release in May.
Hunky Hardy plays a hardworking family
man who receives a phone call that sets in
motion a series of events that will shatter his
family, his job and his soul.
All taking place over the course of one
riveting car ride, Locke is an exploration of
how one decision can lead to the complete
collapse of a life.
The movie is directed by the acclaimed
Steven Knight and features a performance
by Tom Hardy that is reportedly
unforgettable.

Electronic Dance Music Aids Marriage Equality Movement
E
lectronic Dance Music artists have increased their support
for Marriage Equality with the release of the music video
Quite Like This by DJ/Producer Ryan Skyy, using the joy
and popularity of the genre to raise awareness for Marriage
Equality and by donating the proceeds to MarriageEquality.org’s
#MyLoveisEqual campaign.
Ryan Skyy
The music video is particularly special because it features footage from heart-warming
same-sex marriage proposals that have already gone viral on YouTube and have been
licensed to the #MyLoveisEqual campaign for inclusion in the music video.
Collectively, the viral video marriage proposals have already received 20+ million views
and have been featured on the Ellen show and hundreds of publications from Cosmopolitan
magazine to Billboard.com.
The “My Love is Equal” campaign partners with music artists to create music inspired by
marriage equality, and then leverage the sales of that music to raise awareness. All proceeds
are donated to MarriageEquality.org.
The campaign was born out of the realization that music has been a key driving force of
every major human rights movement, from women’s rights, to Black civil rights, to Vietnam
anti-war protests, etc.
Throughout each of these movements, it was music that united people and helped change
the hearts and minds of America. While music has existed as part of the LGBT movement, it
could be argued that it has not reached its’ full potential in propelling the movement and
has been a missing component in the marriage equality movement.

Elton John, Boy George & George Michael
Gay Men And Their Music Reviewed On CD
T
he ‘70s and ‘80s were a heyday for gay men in music. Even
before they were out of the closet, I was listening to hit after
hit by Elton John, Boy George and George Michael during
my high school and college years.
They say that everything old is new again,
and true talent always comes back around.
In that spirit, I have decided to take a tour
down memory lane with new releases from
some of the greatest gay male singers from
back in the day.

“Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” and
of course the title song, as well as timeless
album cuts like “Love Lies Bleeding” and

Forty years later, Goodbye Yellow Brick
Road still holds up (and sounds a whole lot
better than much of the junk put out today).
So I am very happy to report that his record
company has seen fit to give Elton’s magnum
opus the tribute it deserves.
There are, of course, several versions you
can purchase, but I recommend you get the
one I received for review: a two CD set that
includes a re-mastered version of the original
release, plus highlights from John’s 1973 live
show at Hammersmith Odeon and nine
newly-produced covers by current artists of
selected songs from the album.

John was essentially a white soul singer
making country-tinged pop/rock during this
particular period, and the two covers that
really stand out for me are adventurous,
almost psychedelic cuts by neo-soul greats
Emeli Sande (“All The Girls Love Alice”) and
Miguel (“Bennie And The Jets”).
If you’ve long since lost (or worn out) your

or you’ve never heard it, this impressive,
newly minted deluxe edition is an absolute
must-have.

Feel the Burn with Mike Munich’s Sexercise 2.0
Recording Artist Mike Munich has released a new, very sexy, male version of Kyle Minogue’s
Sexercize, Sexercize 2.0. “I wanted to create the male answer to Kylie’s controversial
“Sexercize” music video and give it a hyper masculine twist,” Munich says. You can bounce bounce
along with Munich at www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gomhXaoPlM&feature=youtu.be.
Seduction - A Hot Look for the Fetish Fighter
by Paul Hutnick
Barebacking videos continue to be a controversial topic in the adult community, and the latest
industry insider to take a public stand against the trend is fetish wear designer Nir Zilberman. His
new collection, Seduction, releasing in May, uses a military motif to remind gay men that the fight
against HIV/AIDS wages on. (read the whole story at www.outwordmagazine.com

percent of Republicans under the age of 30
supporting gay couples marrying. Another
poll by the New York Times/CBS News
shows a majority of Republicans under 45
are also supportive.
The new campaign, called “Reform the
Platform,” reflects and builds on grassroots
pro-freedom successes already seen in
states like Nevada, Indiana, California,
Oregon, and New Mexico.
The campaign is also in response to the
Republican National Committee’s post2012 election Growth and Opportunity
Project. “We do need to make sure young
people do not see the Party as totally
intolerant of alternative points of view,”
noted the report. “Already, there is a
generational difference within the
conservative movement about issues
involving the treatment and the rights of
gays. If our Party is not welcoming and
inclusive, young people and increasingly
other voters will continue to tune us out.”
“Reform the Platform” will begin touring
the early primary states of New
Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada, and South
Carolina this spring and summer.
Young
Conservatives propose striking the anti-gay
and anti-freedom to marry references in
five different sections of the official
platform.
Boy George has been listening to everything
and soaking up sounds from the best.
And the singer also sounds wonderful
vocally, even after all of the drugs, on more
meaty and mature songs such as “King Of
Everything,” “Bigger Than War,” “My God,”
and “Live Your Life.”
This Is What I Do is a triumphant
comeback for the one and only Boy George.
It’s one of his best records ever.

a plane ticket to the Big Apple, I highly
recommend you try to see Billy Porter’s
Tony Award-winning performance before
his contract is up again in July of this year.
If that’s not possible, then pick up his
new solo CD, which not surprisingly finds
this divalicious dude belting out Broadway
classics made famous by some of his own
favorite Broadway divas.
Porter nails songs popularized by
Billy Porter — Billy’s Back On Broadway Streisand (“Don’t Rain On My Parade”),
This openly gay Broadway baby is the star Merman (“Everything’s Coming Up Roses”),
and Minnelli (“But The World Goes
and main attraction eight shows a week in
New York City as the devilishly talented drag ‘Round”) like a pro, and also successfully
queen Lola in Kinky Boots. If you can afford covers non-chick hits like “Luck Be A Lady”
and “I’ve Gotta Be Me,” as well as his own
touching ballad “I’m Not My Father’s Son,”
from Kinky Boots.
Alison Fraser
Tennessee Williams: Words And
Music
Tennessee Williams was a notorious
homosexual and a notorious alcoholic back
when those two things seemed to go hand
in hand. He was also, you may have heard,
the brilliant playwright behind some of the
finest works in the American theater,
including A Streetcar Named Desire, The
Glass Menagerie, Night of the Iguana, Cat
on a Hot Tin Roof and Suddenly, Last
Summer.

This terrific CD features two-time Tony
Award-nominee Alison Fraser, who has most
recently starred in the national tour of
Wicked, performing songs featured in the
works of the iconic playwright along with
the unforgettable dialogue he meant to
accompany them.
The album was recorded in New Orleans
with The Gentleman Callers, a red-hot group
of NOLA all-stars, and includes such iconic
songs as “It’s Only A Paper Moon,”
“Sophisticated Lady” and “St. Louis Blues.”
Fraser’s voice is lovely, and her dramatic
line readings of Williams’ famous dialogue
heighten and complement these delicious
new versions of the playwright’s “greatest
hits.”
