Library and Archives Receives Rare 1841
Monmouth Bank One Dollar Note
A gift of a rare 1841 Monmouth Bank one
dollar note was made by Robin Brickman
to Monmouth County Historical
Association in December 2012. According to New Jersey Money by George W.
Waite, only 50-100 examples of this note
remain in existence. A bank note is a
promissory note, made by a bank to the
bearer. The Federal Government did not
begin printing bank notes until 1862 so
there was no national currency and an
insufficient supply of coinage. While bank
notes were the majority of circulated
money, they were discounted relative to gold and silver depending on the financial strength of the bank that issued them. This note
is numbered 1383, shows the name of the bearer, A.R. Combs, the cashier, B.I. Hathaway, and the bank president, John T. Woodhull.
At the top, a shield surmounted by an eagle with Liberty and Justice is featured and on the right side Archimedes is shown raising
the world with a lever. Monmouth Bank was the first bank of Freehold, chartered in 1824.
RED – A Girlfriends’ Valentine Luncheon
New friends were made at this year’s annual RED – A
Girlfriends’ Valentine Luncheon held on February 7 at
the Rumson Country Club. Thanks go again to Lynn
Spector who has chaired the event for the past seven years
and to the hardworking committee -- Barbara Banach,
Sarah Bradley, Linda Bricker, Felicia Campanella,
Carolynn Ozar-Diakon, Alison Friedel, Christianna Harvey,
Daren Hutchinson, Claire Knopf, Marie McCarty, Kathy
McErlean, Nessa Marcovitz, Sossie Najarian, Patricia
Szakats, Kara Short, Courtney Trent, Gail Van Winkle,
Elizabeth Young and Irene Zitzner. Major event sponsors
included the Monmouth Medical Center Foundation and
Claire and Woody Knopf. Brooks Brothers at the Grove
at Shrewsbury donated two luxurious cashmere wraps and
Gold Coast Cadillac gave a car detailing for the Chocolate
Chance raffle. Goldtinker Rumson donated an antique gold and enamel brooch for the Grand Prize Raffle. Other luncheon
supporters included Entertain with Jane and Criterion Chocolates.

Dear Friends,
One critical objective in the mission of Monmouth
County Historical Association is to educate the
community at large through exhibitions and interactive learning. To that point I am proud to announce
the opening of our highly anticipated and first-ever
exhibition to examine the life and work of itinerant
portrait artist and New Jersey resident Micah
Williams (1782-1837). This collection of 67 of his finest portraits relating to
Monmouth County, along with a portrait of Williams by an unknown artist,
will be open free to the public on Sunday, May 19.
Accompanying the exhibition is the Picture YourSelf hands-on learning
experience, which will be offered in the Discovery Room. Open to children
of all ages, one must imagine how they might want to be represented as a
subject in a portrait. Would you prefer to hold a favorite book in your hand,
a beloved pet in your arms, or, perhaps a soccer ball to reflect your status on
the athletic field? Such planning rarely occurs in this technology geared age.
Hundreds of photos are taken of each of us at any given moment, without any
forethought or staging, through the use of cell phones, iPads and digital
cameras. In our interactive learning exhibition children will have the
opportunity to select their clothing and their prop, pose for a portrait, and
take home a special portrait.
So...please, come in and meet the family! And introduce your family!

Association to Participate in
Weekend in Old Monmouth
The fifth annual Weekend in Old Monmouth is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May
4 (10am – 5pm) and Sunday, May 5 (12noon – 5pm). Along with other historic sites in
Monmouth County that waive their admission fees for this special weekend, the Association’s houses and Museum will be featured on the self-guided tour. Organized by the
Monmouth County Historical Commission, a booklet is published to provide visitors with
tour options and separates routes into four geographical sections with suggested driving
maps. Visit our home page at www.monmouthhistory.org to learn more.
This year we have planned special programming at each of our locations. Visitors will
enjoy Spinning and Weaving at the Holmes-Hendrickson House, Woodcarving and
Embroidery at Marlpit Hall, Plein-Air Painting at the Taylor-Butler House, a presentation
about Medicinal Qualities of Plants in the 18th Century at the Allen House, and Open
Hearth Cooking and Woodcarving at the Covenhoven House.

Welcome to our New Trustees
At the 114th Annual Meeting held in January 2013 at Thompson Park Visitor
Center, the Association welcomed five new trustees to our Board. A warm
welcome is extended to the following:
Sarah Ashmore Bradley - Mrs. Bradley is a Founding Partner of Kainos
Capital, a sector-focused private equity firm that makes investments in the
food and consumer sector. Sarah has over 15 years of investment banking and
private equity experience and began her career in New York in the Mergers
& Acquisitions Group of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. She received a B.A.
in Business Administration and a Master of Professional Accounting, both
from the University of Texas at Austin, and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Since joining the Rumson community in the Fall of 2012, Sarah has already
been active on two event committees, Tavernfest and RED - A Girlfriends'
Valentine Luncheon. The Association is very fortunate to have her join us
upon her recent move to Monmouth County from Manhattan.
Andrew K. Holter – Andrew is the Vice President, Head of Department,
American Furniture and Decorative Arts at Christie’s auction house in New
York City. Prior to that Andrew served as the Director of Business
Development and an Auctioneer for a premiere NJ regional auction house
and was Assistant VP of the American Furniture and Decorative Arts
Department of another major NY auction house where he was actively
involved in several landmark sales. Andrew is a contributing member to
Winterthur Museum, Colonial Williamsburg, the Decorative Arts Trust, the
National Trust for Historic Preservation and Preservation New Jersey.
Andrew is a graduate of Rutgers University and regularly appears on television as an appraiser for the PBS program Antiques Roadshow. We are delighted to welcome Andrew to our Board.
Charles “Chuck” H. Jones III – Chuck is from a long line of Monmouth
County residents and Association supporters. His mother, Hope Haskell
Jones, is a staunch supporter and past president of the Association and his
great grandmother, Mrs. J. Amory Haskell, donated (and furnished) Marlpit
Hall to the Association in 1936. Chuck, a Princeton University graduate, and
his family have moved back to New Jersey from the south. He is the new
Director of Admissions at The Rumson Country Day School, coming from
Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, South Carolina where he
was Head of School. Chuck and his wife Shea have already jumped in as
Co-Chairs of the 2013 Garden Party and we are very happy to have them help
carry on tradition.
Elizabeth C. Thees – A true community leader, Liz Thees has been long
involved with many Monmouth County organizations, including leadership
roles for VNA special events, The Junior League of Monmouth County, Clean
Ocean Action, the American Cancer Association, the Rumson Education
Foundation, and the Parker Family Health Clinic. Liz is also a board member
of The Women’s Council at Monmouth Medical Center. Liz is
enthusiastically looking forward to being able to contribute to the Association.
Lisa Klem Wilson – Lisa is a Monmouth County resident with over 25 years
experience in the media industry. Currently, Lisa is a senior media executive
at NewsRight, which is a venture funded by The NY Times, the AP, and The
Washington Post. Lisa is currently a board member of Shore House and a
committee member of the VNA's Stately Homes-by-the-Sea. Lisa has a BA
degree in economics from Georgetown University and a certificate degree in
fundraising and philanthropy from NYU SCPS. Her expertise is very
welcome as we work to expand our marketing and communications efforts.

In the Community
The Association is delighted to partner with local, independent

award-winning author Nathaniel Philbrick (www.nathanielphilbrick.com) who will give a presentation about his newest
book Bunker Hill: A City, A Seige, A Revolution at Nauvoo
Grill on Wednesday, May 29 at 7:00pm. The event is free with

Down on the Farm
On any given day a phone call might be
received from a person asking for an
appointment with our Curator to see if
she could examine an object someone
has found, been given, or inherited.
One day recently, Mr. Ray Guida from
Manalapan called after working in his
yard. He had found a metal object and,
being a history buff, thought it might be
of significance. Sure enough, upon examination Curator Rogoff agreed that it
appeared to be an iron axe head from the late 18th century. Finding this piece
of the past reflects on Monmouth’s rich heritage as a robust farming community.
The Association’s next major exhibition following Micah Williams: Portrait
Artist will be Farm: Agriculture in Monmouth County opening on November 16, 2013. Farm will examine the means by which Monmouth men and
women worked with their surroundings to feed themselves, their families, the
community, and the rest of America as well over the centuries.
Digitization Project Underway at
the Library
A new grant of $5,000 received from the William T. Morris Foundation in March will
underwrite the cost of establishing the infrastructure for digitization of library collections. Funding will cover the creation of a digitization workspace. The workspace
will include a high-grade scanner and scanning software, software for cataloging the
material, a computer to support the scanning equipment and for manipulation of images, and archival discs to be used to store the images for use as in-house reference material and for reproduction purposes.
Once the equipment is in place, we will begin scanning, indexing and uploading the
material to an on-line repository to allow for global accessibility 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. The first materials scanned will be our archival image collections which
include some of the most frequently requested material by our patrons.

AT THE MUSEUM
For the first time ever, sixty-seven Micah Williams portraits, from the Association’s
collection and on loan from private collectors and other institutions, will be seen
together at the Micah Williams: Portrait Artist exhibition opening at the Museum
in Freehold on Sunday, May 19th. The public opening will be from 2-4pm and
is free. The exhibition will examine the life and work of itinerant portrait artist and
New Jersey resident Micah Williams (1782-1837).
Micah Williams is one of the most recognized early American itinerant artists, with
works represented in major museums and sought after by folk art collectors. The
Association is fortunate to hold the largest public collection (22 portraits) of his
portraits. Williams worked extensively in Monmouth County, with most of the
works created between 1818 and 1828.
The exhibition is generously supported. A $50,000 donation was given by a major
anonymous underwriter. A $25,000 gift was given by Donna and Marvin
Schwartz to underwrite the exhibition catalogue. In addition, exhibition grants
were received from the New Jersey Historical Commission ($13,056) and the
Monmouth County Arts Council ($2,000). Generous in-kind donations were
made by McKay Imaging (Red Bank), Around the Corner Art Center
(Freehold), and the Monmouth County Buildings and Grounds
Department. Freehold Savings Bank is a $500 sponsor of the interactive Picture
YourSelf exhibit for children in the Discovery Room. Additional exhibition
sponsorships ranging from $500 - $10,000 are also available. For information
