NOTES FOR WEEK OF: November 3, 2014 McCollum Football Varsity Our Cowboys came up a little short in our game against Edison this Saturday, dropping the contest 16 – 14. After a slow start and down by 16 in the first half our Cowboys made a strong comeback in the second half. Noe Trevino blocked an Edison punt and it was recovered by John Martinez in the endzone for the TD. Ralph Vidal added a second score that was set up by some nice running by Mike Ramirez. Ralph Vidal added the 2 pt conversion to close the gap to what proved to be the eventual final score. Our Cowboys go into the final game of the season ready to play in the 51st Annual Frontier Bowl. It will be a great game so make plans to make it and cheer the Cowboys on to a victory. Junior Varsity Below is Coach Badillo’s game summary: The JV Football Team put together another impressive win as they beat the Edison Golden Bears 54-8, remaining undefeated and improving to 8-0-1 on the season! The Cowboy’s Defense led the way as they dominated Edison throughout the game, holding them scoreless until late in the fourth quarter. LB Daniel Alcorta (Sack & 2 TFL) disrupted the backfield all day, Defensive Linemen Clemente Perez (2 sacks & 5 TFL) and Sean Salinas (1 Sack, 4 TFL, 1 Forced Fumble, & 2 Fumble Recoveries) wreaked havoc up front while Defensive Backs Jordan Ortega and Joseph Casares each recorded an interception. The Cowboy’s Offense looked flawless, scoring on every possession. Lighting up the scoreboard for the Cowboys’ were: FB Manuel Alcorta (3 TD runs), QB Jordan Ortega (TD run & 2pt conversion), TB Alfredo Rosales (2 TD runs & 2pt conversion), SE Cesar DelaRosa (2 conversion receptions from QB Ortega), TB Josh Garcia (65yd TD run), SM Chris Oviedo (2pt conversion reception from QB Benavides), and TB Joseph Casares (2pt conversion reception from QB Ortega). The Cowboy’s JV Football Team head into their rivalry game this week against the Harlandale Indians with momentum, confidence and determination to finish the season undefeated! Go Cowboys! 9th Grade Team Below is Coach Mascorro’s game summaries: This past Friday, the McCollum Freshmen Boys football team fell short vs Edison High school with a score of 48-12. The loss brings the cowboys to 4-3 record in district play. Listed below were the individual standouts from the game: Jonathan Handy – 2 Rushing TD Gerard Orosco – 3 passes of 30+ yrds Dylan Nicols- 2 tackles for loss The boys’ next game takes place this coming Thursday (11-6) vs the Harlandale High School Indians. McCollum Volleyball Coach Martinez’s volleyball team finished the district season UNDEFEATED and as the 28-5A District Championship. Our Cowboys are now 16 – 0 in District 28 – 5A competition. Varsity McCollum vs Harlandale Score: McCollum - 3 / Harlandale - 1 Summary Details: 27-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-19 Junior Varsity McCollum vs Harlandale Score: McCollum - 2 / Harlandale - 0 Summary Details: 25-15, 27-25 (16 – 0 – PERFECT SEASON!!) 9th Grade McCollum A vs Harlandale Score: McCollum A - 0 / Harlandale - 2 Summary Details: 21-25, 23-25 This week’s schedule is below: Play off Game Tuesday vs Floresville Wagner High School November 4 @ 7:30PM Come out and support our Cowboys McCollum Cross Country Coach Rivera’s team completed their season last Friday at the 28 – 5A District Cross Country meet. Here is Coach Rivera’s meet summary: The McCollum boys and girls cross country team competed this past Friday in the District 28-5A meet at the State Hospital hosted by San Antonio ISD. The McCollum varsity boys came up a little short, placing 4th, as they missed qualifying for regional by 6 individual places to Harlandale (116 to 122 points). Top runners for the boys was Jonathan Lopez (15th 19:00.09 5K) and Christian Cuevas (16th 19:00.96 5K). The JV boys also placed 4th overall with top runner Elias Romero (10th 20:28 5K). Although the varsity girls team was short one runner for team points, they had a great finish by Seleste Cantu (18th 23:01 5K). The JV girls also were also short runners for a team total but had an outstanding performance by new comer Elizabeth De La Garza. Overall the Cross Country season for all the runners was a success as runners improved their overall times anywhere from 1 minute to 4 minutes. We will be losing seniors: Matthew Martinez (varsity), Michael Magallanez (JV), Seleste Cantu (varsity), Kimberly Abundis (varsity), Abigail Hernandez (varsity) and Maelyn Sanchez (JV). The varsity boys will have 5 returnees, while the girls will have 1. A thank you goes out to all those that competed and all the parent support during the season. McCollum Girls Basketball Coach Wurzbach’s teams had their first scrimmage of the season this past weekend. She expects some great things from her squads this season.
