Christian Academy of Louisville March 14, 2016 www.caschools.us/centurion-athletics CAL Baseball Wins Pre-Season Scrimmage Preparing for their season opener versus Trinity High School, the Christian Academy Louisville high school team baseball team defeated Bourbon County, 4-2, in a modified scrimmage game. The teams played nine innings in this game to give all players on the high school rosters an opportunity to open their season in a game played at Bourbon County High School in Paris, Kentucky. CAL was leading 3-1 after the standard seven innings of play. While working out a few rough spots, it was a great way to get the season started. CAL completed their 2015 season with a 19-14 record, including having two players graduate who are now playing NCAA Division 1 baseball: Cincinnati Reds draft pick Riley Thompson and Seventh Region Player of the Year, Jonathan Embry. CAL had split a double header with Bourbon County in 2015 in a season where Bourbon County had finished their season with a 24-7 record. Returning players for CAL in 2016 include Paul Haupt and Dylan Sexton, who were both named to the AllSeventh Region team in 2015. (continued on next page) Middle School Girls Soccer Kicks off Season (page 6) Track & Field Off to Strong Start The Centurion Track & Field team is off to a strong start for the 2016 season. The girls are undefeated, winning a tri-meet with Bullitt East and Fern Creek and a dual meet victory over Oldham County. The boys split the tri, defeating Fern Creek, but coming up short against Bullitt East and narrowly losing to Oldham County. (continued on pg. 3) CLICK HERE to Register to Play or Sponsor! (more info on pg. 4) In the scrimmage game, all runs were scored in the third and eighth innings for both teams. CAL struck first when Blake Carlisle walked with one out in the third inning. Matthew Derridinger was called on to run for Carlisle. Derridinger stole second base and Lukas Felty drew a walk. One out later, Luke Price collected his second hit of the game, singling to left field on 0-2 pitch to score Derridinger and give CAL a 1-0 lead. Dylan Sexton followed with a line drive to single to right field to score Felty. Matthew Duvall entered the game to run for Sexton. Both Price and Duvall advanced on a passed ball and Price scored when Aaron Blake reached on an error by the Bourbon County shortstop to give CAL a 3-0 lead. Bourbon County scored once in the bottom half of the inning on a single, a walk, and a double. Those were the only runs scored during the standard regulation play of seven innings. Each team scored once in the eighth inning. For CAL, Hunter Myers drew a one-out walk and stole second base and was balked to third. Hilton Baumann reached base on wild pitch on strike three, but Myers was thrown out at the plate. Baumann stole second and then advanced to third base and to home on wild pitches to give CAL a 4-1 lead. Bourbon County scored in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of a couple of CAL errors to plate the final run of the game. CAL had four hits in the game, all singles. Luke Price had two singles and Aaron Blake and Dylan Sexton each had one. CAL used five pitchers in the preseason warm-up: Dylan Sexton, Aaron Blake, Jonathan Allen, Luke Price, and Cameron Marshall. They combined to scatter seven hits in nine innings, walking three, allowing one earned run, and striking out 14 Bourbon County batters. Blake and Allen combined to allow two hits and strike out seven in their four innings on the mound in their CAL debuts. CAL’s season opener will be played Monday afternoon at 5:30 at Trinity High School. CAL’s home opener is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 vs. Fairdale. CAL will also play games at Bullitt East at 5:30 on Friday; 1:00 Saturday at home versus DuPont Manual; and the following Monday at home vs. DeSales at 5:00. This was written by Dan Britton who serves as FCA's Executive Vice President of International Ministry and has been on FCA staff since 1991. “The last thing we need is another acronym, but GGTG is a great reminder for athletes and coaches. It should be the reason why we compete. As competitors, it helps us to focus on the main thing. The message is plain-it is not about us, but about Christ. So what does GGTG stand for? It stands for "Give God The Glory."Whatever we do (speech, actions, and thoughts), give God the glory. It is a simple concept, but hard to live out. All glory (awards, recognition, winning seasons, scoring the winning goal) must be given back to our Savior. Any glory that we keep for ourselves, we steal from God. We should be mirrors. When God looks at us, all His glory shines back at Him. Give God the glory. GGTG!” Currently, the student athletes are registering for next year’s classes. I wanted to remind everyone that we would love to have a couple (ideally one male and one female student) interns for next year. We have had a couple of interns in the past and had a great time working with them. We are also in the process of trying to bring on a college intern from Bellarmine University to work with our sports performance program and think it would be a great opportunity for the CAL student athletes to intern alongside an actual college student athlete. In the Varsity game, the CAL strikers and midfield had some good looks at goal but were not able to convert. The cal defense, led by Gabby Smith and the goal keeper, Katherine Bosch, held steady. Katherine held her ground and in the end, kept a clean sheet (no goals). The game ended with a 0-0 score. In the Junior Varsity match up, possession was heavily in favor of the visitors, but the players learned a great deal and came together as a team. CAL's young keeper, Marisa Franklin, was tested often and came away with some great saves for the team. Unfortunately, the game ended at a score of 0-10 in favor of the East Oldham team. 6 CAL ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT 502-244-3225 (0ffice) 502-244-3193 (fax) Brad Morgan, Director of Athletics 244-3225 ext. 1072 bmorgan@caschools.us Jennifer Roberts, Assistant AD, 244-3225, ext 1037 jroberts@caschools.us Cora Parker, Administrative Assistant 244-3225 ext. 1080 cparker@caschools.us Stefan LeFors, Scheduling Coordinator, 244-3225 ext 1081 slefors@caschools.us Hollie Foster, Sports Information,244-3225 ext. 1054, hfoster@caschools.us Trisha Pullen, Centurion Armory, tpullen@caschools.us Kate Meyer, Athletic Trainer, katebmeyer@gmail.com For CAL Sports Game and Practice Schedules visit: www.caschools.us/centurion-athletics THE CENTURION ARMORY 753-4598 FALL SPORTS: HIGH SCHOOL Cross Country-Lowery Stallings, lowery_stallings@yahoo.com Cheerleading-Audrey Able, ajbales@comcast.net Field Hockey-Stanley Phulpagar, sphulpag@ivytech.edu Football-Stefan LeFors, slefors@caschools.us Golf Boys’-Greg Zimmerer, gzimmerer@lifecell.com Golf Girls’- Ron Gustafason, coachgus@twc.com Strength & Conditioning- Greg Lile, glile@caschools.us Soccer - Boys-Toby Wilcox, toby@wilcoxmedical.net Soccer -Girls-John Zutt, jzutt@cardinalintegrated.com Volleyball-Patty Ernst, pernst@midamericasportscenter.com MIDDLE SCHOOL: Cross Country– Ashley Lundquist, ashleymargaret.onfootonfire@gmail.com Cheerleading– Maggie Tait, maggiedoggett@gmail.com Field Hockey – David Ernst, dave@prestigebuilthomes.com Football - Danny McGee, rollcalldaddy@aol.com Volleyball– Jade Burke, jtburke@bbandt.com Tennis Girls/Boys Rhonda Arnold, rarnold@caschools.us WINTER SPORTS: HIGH SCHOOL Basketball (Boys) - Chad Carr, hlcarr@bellsouth.net Basketball (Girls) - Perry White, perry.w.white@gmail.com Bowling - Tim Brown, tbrown@caschools.us Cheerleading— Audrey Able, ajbales@comcast.net Strength & Conditioning- Greg Lile, glile@caschools.us Swimming, Amy Albiero, albierofamily@juno.com MIDDLE SCHOOL: Basketball– (Boys) - Robert Boggs, rphbig@twc.com Basketball (Girls) - Bill Gardner, big.bill.gardner@gmail.com Cheerleading– Maggie Tate, maggiedoggett@gmail.com Swimming, Amy Albiero, albierofamily@juno.com SPRING SPORTS: High School Baseball - Tim Brown, tbrown@caschools.us Softball- Kyle Mullin, kmullin@rev-a-shelf.com Boys Lacrosse- Phil Brock, philbrock15@gmail.com Girls Lacrosse– Sean Reding, sean@adelereding.com Strength & Conditioning- Greg Lile, glile@caschools.us Boys Tennis– Todd Hammonds, todd.hammonds@yahoo.com Girls Tennis- Jeff Mallory, jmallory@caschools.us Boys/Girls Track and Field- Lowery Stallings, lowery_stallings@yahoo.com MIDDLE SCHOOL: Baseball - Doug Russell, dougrussell42@gmail.com Softball – Eddie Franz, eddiefranz3@gmail.com Boys Lacrosse– Phil Brock, philbrock15@gmail.com Girls Lacrosse– Maddie Beck, madeline.beck@kinglouiesports.com Boys Golf – Tony Bischoff, tbischoff73@runbox.com Girls Golf—Darcy Coombe, darcycoombe@yahoo.com Boys Soccer– Young Kwon, tkwon@caschools.us Girls Soccer- Joey Autry, jlautry@bellsouth.net Boys/Girls Track - Natalie Ball, nball@caschools.us Intramural Offerings: Grades K-5 Jennifer Roberts, Assistant AD, 244-3225, ext 1037, jroberts@caschools.us CALATHLETICS@CENTURIONAD 7
