Junior High Buzz Louise Junior High School December 2013 Volume 1, Issue 1 2014-2015 School Year Sees Few Changes The 2014-2015 school year has gotten off to a great start. We have a new math teacher. The new math teacher comes to us from Lufkin ISD. Her name is Mrs. Jenny Neilsen. We are glad that she has joined our little family. Mrs. Sternadel is still with us as the math specialist. Everyone is working hard to improve our STAAR scores. The Junior High received a star of distinction for 8th grade social studies (way to go Ms. Appling). We are studying hard to add to that star of distinction. All the classes are doing their part to make the 3014-2015 STAAR test shine with pride. Keep up the great work everyone! High School Football Shines The entire district is proud of the high school football team. After a great start to the season, the Varsity Football team turned in a 9 and 3 season to receive a place in the playoffs. The Hornets defeated Milano in the first round to continue on to the second round. D’Hanis was the next team to fall to the Mean Sting. Traveling to Bastrop, the Hornets were defeated by the hard hitting Bremond team. Bremond later became the State Champions for the Hornets Division. We work very hard at all of our sports. The sports that we have a choice to play are cross country, volleyball, basketball, track, and softball. There are about 15 girls total in the 8th grade athletic program. We have 3 coaches, their names are Coach Collins, Coach Hosman, and Coach Wade. Coach Wade is the high school girl’s coach but he still helps out with the Jr. High program as well. I hope that the Louise Jr. High athletics program will last a very long time. I feel it’s a great program for kids to learn, so they know what to do before they reach the high school program. Another reason I think it’s a great program is that it teaches teamwork. They practiced hard every morning to win those games. They girls have started basketball season and have had 3 games. Although, 8th grade did not win, they still did good job on the court with their plays. They’ve been going to early morning practice so they can increase their basketball skill. The coaches are teaching the girls the plays on the court. Most of the girls have made their shots in the net. Some are getting their free throws. They are prepared to play and win. UIL Competition There is now a UIL class. During this class, students are prepared for the UIL academic competition. Some of the students in UIL took tests early in calculation and science. The other UIL students traveled to Ganado on December 12th to take the other tests. Louise did very will in this competition. Congratulations to all those who participated. The students who did not compete in UIL events had to go to Mr. Hosman’s room and work on assignments that they didn’t turn in. If you didn’t have any work, he would give you a piece of paper and you would have to write about a subject that he would give you. This was preparing the students for the STAAR writing test. Alex the Great! Alex Hernandez, is the 7th grade hero of the Jr. High Football Team. Alex was playing great until the tragic event happened, he gets hit and gets a concussion. Alex had to stay out for two games. He played the last game, even though the junior high football team didn’t win all their games, they still had a very amazing season. Way to go boys! To find out how everyone was going to celebrate Christmas, we asked the eighth grade class what they’d be doing over the break. According to our poll, 40% of the students said they’d be staying at home with their families, 28% would be partying and celebrating, 25% were going to travel, and 7% said they would be doing something different. We hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! By: Kaitlyn Surratt, Caydi Blaha, Kristian Munoz 3
