For those of you who have “been around the block a few times” - as my dad used to say - when it comes to
ordering spirit wear, team uniforms, warm-ups, etc., you will surely appreciate this story. For those of you not
acquainted with the ordering process, please know that the sportswear items usually arrive mid-season – that’s
just the nature of the beast. Then, if there’s anything wrong with them like the incorrect size, color, spelling, etc.,
it can take until nearly the end of the season to get the corrected version. Here’s my little story. Last Friday
morning before school, my 9th grade son Victor went to Varsity basketball coach and program head, Mr. Jayson’
classroom to pick up his new warm-up shirt. Without looking at the back of his new shirt, he put it on and wore it
to class. A soccer teammate pointed out that Victor’s name was misspelled; Laszio instead of Laszlo. At the end
of first hour Victor went back to Mr. Jayson and informed him. During second hour Mr. Jayson called him back
and asked for the shirt back. (We’re up to 3 trips to Coach Jayson’s room before 9 a.m.) At the end of the day
Victor was called back to Coach Jayson’s office and handed a new shirt with the correct spelling!!! Absolutely
unheard of! (I might add that there was a second boy whose name was also misspelled and was also immediately
corrected.) When I thanked Coach Jayson a couple of days later (Victor, in true boy fashion, never even told me
about the shirt until 3 days later), he said he was as surprised as I was when the sports company, Team Sports of
Clarkston said they’d have a new shirt by the end of the day! And so hats off to Mr. Jayson and Team Sports of
Clarkston for taking their jobs seriously, responsibly and accountably. Excitement over a shirt may seem silly,
but parents shell out lots of money each year for these things and the kids wear them proudly to represent their
team and school. I admire people who speak up to do the right thing and hold themselves accountable to the task
at hand. It can be all too easy to pass the buck instead of looking the buck in the eye and saying, I’ll take care of
it – you can count on me.
So thank you Coach Jayson and Team Sports! Now the real question is; did Coach Jayson use his basketball
coaching “voice” when he made that phone call or his inside classroom voice? Ha! Sorry, Mr. Jayson, Coach
Hamill can’t be the only coach I pick on.
FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE FOR SEMESTER 1
WATERFORD MOTT HIGH SCHOOL
2013/2014
On Tuesday we will follow a Thursday schedule. When we go to 7th hour, we will just extend 7th hour until 2:28
so teachers can give their 7th hour exam. OTC and Kettering Shuttle Buses will run. OTC students will leave and
return at their normal time. Kettering shuttles will run a Thursday Schedule.
On Wednesday, there will be NO OTC shuttle buses running. If your student has 1, 2 & 3 at OTC, they can either
find their own transportation over to OTC or they will be excused if they don’t go.
On Thursday, there will be NO OTC shuttle bus running. If your student has 3rd hour OTC they can either find
transportation there, come to school and sit in the cafeteria for 3rd hour or just come to Mott for 4th hour to take
their exam.
On Friday, there will be NO OTC shuttle bus running. If your student has 5 & 6 at OTC, they can either find their
own transportation over to OTC or they will be excused if they don’t go.
Shuttle buses will run to Kettering on all of those days.

Eight Mott DECA Business Club Members Advance to State Competition

On Saturday, January 11th, the following 22 students from Mott competed in the District 6 DECA
Competition against over 800 other students from 24 high schools in our region:

The competition involves taking a written test and participating in a role play event in a chosen occupational
area such as Sports & Entertainment Marketing, Financial Services or Travel & Tourism Marketing. The role
play is judged by a business professional and the scores are averaged in with the written test scores. The students
participate individually or in teams of two.
The following students qualified to represent Mott High School in the State Competition, in March.
The team of Logan Mathews and Andrew Quintero qualified in the Business Law & Ethics event.
The team of Jared Holt and Cooper Klein qualified in the Business Financial Services event.
The team of Alex Phillips and Justin Sliwka qualified in the Hospitality & Tourism event.
Macey Ronquillo qualified for the state competition in the Retail Merchandising event.
Samantha Shadwell qualified for the state competition in the Business Financial Services event. She also
received additional awards for best role play and best test score in her event.
Congratulations to all of these future businessmen and women!

Next Saturday, our Varsity Club, Leadership and NHS students will host 44 SOMI basketball teams
at Mott for their Regional Basketball Competition. This is our 4th annual hosting of this event!
WE need parents, alumni, family members to also volunteer in concessions - as we feed more than 500
athletes that day ! That's a lot of hot dogs, pizza, popcorn and smoothies! This is the main fundraiser for the
MVP Scholarship Fund.
Please email kbruewer@comcast.net to volunteer your time....2 hour shifts or longer if you can...the time
flies and the rewards and memories and impressions made are priceless.
If your team or organization has extra concession items like popcorn, oil, bags, seasoning, ketchup,
mustard, plates, napkins - we will be grateful to receive them. All this concession money goes back to our kids!

Waterford on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 6-9 p.m. at the Oakland Schools Conference
Center located at 2111 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford!
This premier community event promises family-fun and entertainment for all ages. The 2014 theme
will center around the upcomingMardi Gras! Over 30 restaurant vendors will be in attendance for guests
to sample their finest cuisine. Live Dixieland Band music, fortune tellers, circus artists, a beautiful raffle
and exciting 50-50, complimentary shuttle service, children’s Mardi Gras crafts and prizes for the best

Dear parents,
Please read and consider sharing with your children the MIPrepzone
news excerpt below from 2010. It is a “before” snippet in the life of
Lakeland High School student athlete, Bridget McBride – a beautiful girl,
probably well-liked, intelligent, bright, helpful, etc….but who made a poor
choice. And maybe no one around her that fateful night did anything to help
prevent what happened next? I do not know this girl and have no idea of the
circumstances of what occurred. I simply researched her name after reading
the story that follows on the next page about the tragic accident and life that
was lost. It’s all public record. I’m not divulging any untruths. I just
wanted to show a real life example of something that happened to a high
school student that was seemingly like so many others – others whom believe
“it”-and “it” can be a thousand different things - will never happen to them.

A White Lake teen has pleaded no contest after being charged last year with the drunken driving death of a
Milford woman.
Bridget McBride, 18, was formally charged with operating while intoxicated and reckless driving, causing
death tied a the Nov. 17 accident on Milford Road that claimed the life of 38-year-old Cheryl PrewittMurphy.
She is scheduled to be sentenced at 10 a.m. March 25 in Oakland County Circuit Court.
A four month investigation after the crash led to McBride being charged initially in the 52-1 District Court. Her original charges carried a
maximum penalty of 15 years in prison or a $10,000 fine.
Alcohol was believed to be a factor early on in the accident investigation, said Milford police. Further tests revealed McBride was
believed to have
0.11 percent of alcohol in her body before the crash, along with one nanogram of marijuana in her system.
She was hospitalized with minor orthopedic injuries following the crash, but was released and posted bond before her trial, in which she
was represented by Royal Oak-based attorney Mitchell Ribitwer.
After being bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court — and a string of appearances in Judge Shalina Kumar’s courtroom — McBride
reached an agreement with the court, pleading to operating while intoxicated, causing death.
The minimum guidelines for her plea are 19 to 38 months in prison, which are determined by the court.
In June, a civil lawsuit was also filed against the 18-year-old for negligence, which is pending in Chief Circuit Judge Nanci Grant’s court.
