Ricco Aceves, a mechancial
engineering major, is one of 150
students from 70 universities
who’ve been accepted into the
prestigious NASA Pathways

internship gives undergraduates
the opportunity to explore federal
careers while still in school with
the possibility of being hired

Multidisciplinary studies major
Shanice Mzava never played on a
lacrosse team before she set foot on
UTSA’s campus, but she’ll be leaving
as the founding member of the firstever UTSA women’s lacrosse team.
After helping the men’s lacrosse team
for several years, Shanice saw the
lack of a women’s team and took her
leadership skills to the next level,
giving the rest of the university a
new tradition. As a multidisciplinary
studies major, she’s earning a degree
that focuses on not one, or even two
disciplines. Her degree combines
public health, business and sociology,
giving her the well-rounded education
she was looking for when she chose
UTSA as her university.

YOUR FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
» utsa.edu/orientation
The first step in being a Roadrunner
is setting foot on campus. During the
summer, stay overnight in a residence hall,
learn about the academic process, get your
UTSA ID card, meet with your advisor, sign
up for classes and meet other students.
ROADRUNNER DAYS
» utsa.edu/roadrunnerdays
The moment you move on campus starts
two weeks of festivities designed to
introduce you to the UTSA community,
and help you make connections with other
students. Don't expect to do laundry this
week—you'll be coming home with tons
of orange and blue shirts from the various
events you'll attend on campus.
PEER MENTORS
» utsa.edu/fye
To ease the transition to university life,
you will be paired with an experienced
UTSA student as a mentor. He or she
will provide support and guidance
on everything from choosing a major
to getting involved on both Main and
Downtown campuses.
FRESHMEN TRADITIONS
» utsa.edu/traditions
Kick off your school pride by experiencing
"Rowdy Rush," a new tradition where
the freshmen class rush onto the football
field to form a tunnel with the band, and
welcome the UTSA football team onto the
field in the Alamodome. Go Runners!

named Civic Court Project, was
recognized as a 2014 Clinton Global

and living in Washington, D.C. as one
of only 40 undergraduates across

SPIRIT OF SAN ANTONIO
PERFORMING IN FRANCE
GREEK LIFE
HARLEM SHAKE
“Being part of the inaugural UTSA
marching band, and taking the field
for the very first UTSA football game
was an amazing experience. I was
making school history.”
“It was such an honor to be chosen
to be part of the 70th anniversary of
D-Day in France. We are only in our
fourth year of the program. It was an
honor to perform for these veterans
on such a special day in history.”
“I’ve met all of my best friends through
the organizations I am involved in. To
me, you can't get the entire college
experience without being a part of
something you love. With more than
300 organizations on campus, there's
something for everyone.”
“Of course, I wasn’t going to miss
out on something so huge, especially
not when the president of the
university was doing the Harlem
Shake. It’s so cool how something so
random brought everyone together
for 10 minutes.”
When I
compared the
cybersecurity
program at UTSA
to the one at Stanford,
they were almost identical.
That

Hacking
Top Scholar and computer
science major Eric Ficke
was so impressed by the
cybersecurity program at UTSA
(recently named best in the
country), that he selected the
college over both Stanford
and Johns Hopkins. That
decision has provided him
with the opportunity to be the
first freshman to intern at the
UTSA Center for Infrastructure
Assurance and Security (CIAS),
where he is currently assisting
with the development of the
curriculum for a CIAS course
that will teach professionals
how to protect their systems
from hacking.
I think of my involvement

Bulgarian-born Pavi Bambekova was
one of 20 incoming freshmen accepted
into FAME (Facilitated Acceptance to

has been extremely active outside of
the FAME program, involving herself in
UTSA Ambassadors and The Paisano,
an independent student-run newspaper
for UTSA. She is also an active Bulgarian
folk dancer, peer mentor for incoming
students and founder of a HOSA chapter
for future health professionals at UTSA.

Build Relationships
Residence Hall Association
On-campus housing offers an environment where
lifetime friendships are formed, ideas and ideals
may be exchanged, and opportunities for leadership
and networking await those willing to explore and
get involved.
The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is a student
organization with the purpose to build a strong
sense of community and empower residents through
service, educational, social, leadership and personal
development opportunities. RHA also acts as an
agency for resident advocacy with the intent to
revisit housing policies and address the issues and
concerns of the residential community to improve the
living/learning environment.
Convenience
Living on campus is convenient. Residents are
within walking distance of the library, classroom
buildings, the University Center, dining options and

of the drive home.

Village and Laurel Villgae, all residential facilities
are furnished and provide ample space for effective
studying, sleeping, socializing and storage. No need
to worry about separate bills either. We offer simple,
inclusive billing for all utilities and services through
your ASAP account. We also accept UTSA financial aid.
Special Interest Housing
The Special Interest Housing (SIH) program allows
students with common interests to live together
in a supportive environment. The SIH experience
serves as a significant educational enhancement
for residents. SIH’s aim is to educate members on
their special interests and provide a welcoming
environment in which to discuss issues. These
communities are located in Alvarez Hall and Laurel
Village and includes Honors, Engineering, Leadership
and Service, and Music.
