Quarterly BAUE Newsletter January – March 2010 Editor: Mark Lloyd News Bites GUE card renewal has changed I'm not sure how many people are aware of the renewal process for your expired GUE certification. There is no longer a requirement to send in your logs. It is simply an acknowledgment of the following: I (blank) warrant that I am an active diver having done at least an average of 8 dives per year (25 over three years) within the curriculum for which I am applying to renew. I remain confident in my skills with diving experience across the range of my diving qualifications. Additionally you need to fill in the details of your current GUE card, pay the fee, and you’re set to go. Access this form at the GUE website: http://www.gue.com GUE 2010 Conference Picked December 3‐5 Riviera Maya, Mexico Members on Vacation Our membership is often seen far and wide. It will be darker blue with the same logo. Once the shirts are available we will let everyone know where and when to pick them up. New Certifications Allison and Rob Lee now have their Cave 1 to go along with their Tech 2 ratings. New Fundamentals Andrew Bell Erik Sandvik Kathy Dicker Peter Chandler New tech‐rating upgrades Masao Yoshimura Vladimir Chernavsky Pavel Sokolov Nathalie Udo Bryan Feezor Andrew Denevi August Gugelmann Kenn Hwang Steve Dawson Congratulations to all. Past Activities Sue travels each year to spend quality time with humpback whales. She traveled in March to the Silver Banks (located midway between the Dominican Republic and Turks Caicos) for 2 weeks of whaling adventures. This year her trip was blessed with unusually good weather and abundant whale encounters, both on the surface and in the water. Mother and Baby Whale Sue and Beto Nava: Aruba Sue & Beto ventured to Aruba for a Nava Family vacation. In addition to spending time with their nephews (snorkeling and riding inner tubes pulled by fast boats), they got in a few dives. Their favorite dive was on the Antilles, which is a shallow-water wreck on the NW side of the island. This was a fun & relaxing trip, and the location was perfect for family activities, but while Aruba is world-renowned for windsurfing it is not considered a dive destination. General Membership Information BAUE now has a total of 61 members, 50 paid and 11 honorary. New in 2010 are: 2 Boats The Escapade Ranger Chuck Bancroft, Point Lobos State Park, and BAUE hosted a 3-day interactive event at Whalers Cove, for Carmel Middle School students. The event included a presentation by the Lifeguards, two marine-life exhibits, and a geology tour of the park. More than ninety 7th graders attended the camp, and they were instructed to keep a journal and to answer quiz questions on what they learned during their activities. Clinton Bauder kicked off the event by giving an early morning presentation at Carmel Middle School on the marine life at Point Lobos, and BAUE activities in the local area. At Point Lobos, BAUE members were in charge of the marine exhibits. Our divers collected specimens, set up displays, and gave presentations about invertebrate marine life found in Whalers Cove. BAUE volunteers were accompanied on their collection dives by curious harbor seals who assisted in selecting and capturing the most interesting invertebrate specimens. All of the marine life was returned to the ocean with the help of the CMS students immediately after the presentations. We had lots of hope for a great winter season of diving but that was not to be. In January we planned 2 Tech boats and 1 Rec boat. February had 3 Tech boats scheduled, and March had 2 Tech and 1 Rec. Unfortunately not all these boats were able to go but we had a few good dives through all the sea nettles and brown water that tried to dissuade us. Community Activities In February, BAUE had a few members participate in a in-water event open to all divers at Wallins Dive Center. Susan Bird organized this event to introduce people to our system and the gear we use. Susan, Rob Lee and Joakim Linde provided gear and in-water feedback to participants, and Beto Nava helped to introduce GUE by doing a presentation and lending surface support. The event was widely appreciated, and Wallins has asked for BAUE to support a Try-GUE event once a quarter at the shop. Carmel Middle School Science Camp at Point Lobos The 2010 Point Lobos Science Camp was a great success! Photos from the event can be found here: http://www.baue.org/images/galleries Click on Event Photos then 2010 Carmel Middle School Science Camp We'd like to thank all of those who were able to lend a hand for this activity, including: Tiffany Murzi, Susan Bird, Joakim Linde, Beto Nava, Leah Wadler, Nathalie Udo, Casey Harnel, Clinton Bauder, Kevin Dow, Andrew Denevi, Nils Brummond, and Kathy Dicker 3 A big thanks to Joakim who did an outstanding job of not only organizing the event but also bringing some great food to keep us all going. Up and Coming Boats As usual we have a number of Technical and Recreational boats for April, May, and June. Please check out the BAUE Calendar at: http://www.baue.org/calendar/index.php for these boats and we are always looking for volunteers to organize the individual trips. If your interested let us know. BAUE 2010 Project BAUE’s yearly project for 2010 will be at Point Lobos and will take place on May 15th and 16th. The focus of this project is the mapping of Whaler’s Cove in Pt. Lobos, with specific emphasis placed on the Middle Reef area. Karl Haywood is the lead organizer and any questions can be directed to him. Project Baseline Late last year Jarrod Jablonski and Todd Kincaid presented to BAUE on Project Baseline. Since their visit BAUE has been investigating the best way to help GUE in their vision for Project Baseline and how to enable our members to get involved. Mark Lloyd volunteered to be the point of contact and has had a number of meetings with Todd and Jarrod. There is a BAUE forum folder at: We'd also like to thank Ranger Chuck Bancroft for inviting BAUE to participate in this community service event. Kids with the wildlife Point Lobos Invitational March had BAUE at Point Lobos for one of the regular invitational dives. This is set up as a way for all BAUE members to meet, have fun, and dive without having to worry about getting reservations. The reservations are handed out to all those who wish to attend, till they run out. Those lucky enough to attend the event were: Cynthia Madden, Karl Haywood, Harry Babicka, Sandra Tullis, Jason Warsharsky, Vladimir Chernavsky, Gary Banta, Nathalie Udo, Andrew Bell, Casey Harnal, Clinton Bauder, John Heimann, Kathy Dickers, Joakim Linde, Mark Lloyd, Harry Wong, Ted Pimentel, Kevin Dow, Masao Yoshimura, & Dionna House 4 http://www.baue.org/forums which has been setup that will store the Project Baseline presentations and announcements / updates. In the near future we will form a group whose intent will be to understand how BAUE can contribute in a meaningful way. CPR and Rescue Training Dionna House, our own BAUE nurse, will be putting together CPR and FirstAid Training for those people that are interested. Eventually we can incorporate a day on the Escapade to practice rescues and procedures with Jim and his crew. Stay tuned!! Bits and Pieces Congratulations to Dionna House on finishing nursing school. Her diving team suffered many a story while she was going through her years of training. You may of seen Joakim Linde at Anywater filling trimix. Since Frank and his team were off in Mexico, Joakim volunteered to fill our tanks with the good stuff while they were away.
