Since the official launch of the program in October 2014, efforts have been made by volunteers from these churches, the Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and several area businesses to provide meals on every 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Mondays of the month. This program is open to anyone interested in enjoying a hot meal with friends and neighbors. Reverend Chad Poland of the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church said that “the Community Dinner Project has brought organizations together through a common purpose, has provided friends and coworkers an opportunity to grow in their relationships through shared service, and has connected people from across the spectrum of our community. What began with 5 people sharing a meal has reached numbers as high as 70. We are achieving our goal: A warm place, an inviting community, and great food.” A Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) spokesperson, noting that organization’s partnership in the Free Community Dinner program, stated, “We are looking forward to saying thank you for all of the support we have received from our community, and giving back through hosting one of these dinners on February 22, with tremendous assistance provided by the Foxcroft Academy National Honor Society students. In addition to serving our dinner guests that evening, we will be supporting community members by showcasing local food from farms in our area in the meal that we prepare.” The meal will feature local, seasonal foods and the PCSWCD will be promoting the farms and stores they source the ingredients from. The District has receive food donations from Checkerberry Farm in Parkman, Breakneck Ridge Farm in Blanchard, Rusted Rooster Farm in Parkman, Widdershins Farm in Dover-Foxcroft, Autumn Echo Farm in Medford and Shaw’s Supermarket in Dover-Foxcroft. (Eastern Gazette photo – Mike Lange) “200” carved wood sign. Town Manager Tom Goulette addressed the crowd briefly, noting that Guilford was originally settled in 1806 “when a few adventurous souls, seeking a better life for themselves, braved the elements and muddy roadways – sometimes traveling over animal paths – cleared land and built homes of sticks and rocks.” Today, descendants of some of these original settlers – the Lows, Bennetts and Herrings – still live in the Guilford area. The town was officially incorporated by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1816, several years before Maine became a state. Goulette joked that his father “moved here as a French Catholic Democrat – a tough way to gain a foothold in this Republican Protestant town – and consequently, I always felt like an alien.” But Goulette said that since many believe that people are “separated by only six degrees,” he keeps stumbling onto names in his ancestry that “sound familiar, such as Warren, Stevens, Packard, Delano, Chase, Bradford … and Grant.” The town manager said that more than anything, residents should “celebrate our resilience and perseverance. We’ve had major fires in 1825, 1925, 1928, 1958 and 1969; major floods in 1832, 1856, 1966 and 1987; two Depressions, two World Wars and several smaller wars, droughts and a year with no summer.” He quipped that until the recent cold snap, “We almost got through this year with no winter.” The year-long celebration continues with a pot-luck dinner at the March 21 annual town meeting, where the final ticket of a 37-day drawing will be picked; a free “Yellow Brick Road” Elton John tribute at Piscataquis Community High School on April 16, courtesy of French Construction and Herring Brothers Meat Market; and many other summer and spring activities. One event that organizers are still waiting for is the first birth of the bicentennial year. The lucky baby will get a handmade afghan, knit booties and cap, a $50 savings bond from Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union and other prizes, said committee member Janie Lander. “We only had one Guilford baby born all last year,” said Lander. “But we have two expectant mothers in town, so we know someone will get the prize basket.” Updates and a complete list of events is posted on the Guilford Maine Bicentennial Facebook page. =V[LK¸)LZ[VM[OL)LZ[¹`LHYZPUHYV^ CALL TODAY 4HRL`V\YHWWVPU[TLU[UV^ 800.679.5006 | www.taxproinc.net 7P[[ZÄLSK:RV^OLNHU+V]LY-V_JYVM[ 7P[[ Ä SK :R O + M[ 487.5006 474.2999 564.8500 FILE EARLY NO OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS! Foxcroft Academy was five-for-seven in the championship round and scored 146 points while Dirigo (12), Ellsworth (94.5), Winslow (91), Mountain Valley and Wells (79.5 each) rounded out the top five. “The team has been on a mission all year,” said Coach Luis Ayala. “They have been relentless in achieving this goal. We have won state championships before, but this is different because is a Class B title. It has been an amazing journey and I am so proud of this team how they came together to win it.” Wrestling was reorganized into two classes starting this year, so the state’s smaller schools like Foxcroft Academy and Dexter now compete in Class B. FA state title winners and their weight classes were Zac Caron (145), Billy Brock (182); his brother, Brandon Brock (195); Michael Pendriss (220) and Connor Holmes (285). R.J. Nelson finished second in the 132-pound class while Brandon Weston took third in the 106-pound division to score some valuable points for the Ponies The road to the state championship started with the Ponies’ ninth regional wrestling title on February 7 at Winslow High School as they dominated the matches, finishing 49.5 points ahead of last year’s regional champion Ellsworth High School. Brandon Brock and Michael Pendriss also reached personal milestones at the regional tournament. Pendriss scored his 100th career win in the finals, and Brock reached his 150th career victory in the semifinals to become just the sixth wrestler in team history to accomplish the feat. Try the Moosehead Lake Classic by Mike Lange GREENVILLE – Die-hard golfers don’t have to wait until the grass is green on their favorite course this year. Just sign up for the Moosehead Lake Golf Classic on Sunday, March 6, sponsored by the Greenville Recreation Committee. You don’t need golf shoes or a cart, but you may want ice grips for this course. Teams of four play nine holes on a course laid out near the Greenville Junction railroad trestle using a five-iron or a putter and tennis balls. “The course was set up by Steve Mason and Dale Hanscom last year,” said Sally Tornquist, Greenville’s recreation director. “They make it pretty challenging. One hole is under the railroad trestle.” The golf classic has been run as a fundraiser for the Greenville Recreation Department for the past three years and is getting more popular each year, Tornquist said. “The Hight Chevrolet, Ford and Chrysler-Dodge dealerships are sponsoring a longest drive contest this year with a $250 cash prize,” she said. “It’s a lot harder than it looks to hit a tennis ball a long distance.” Indian Hill Trading Post is donating Hannaford gift cards to the top three teams in the tournament. The first-place team gets a trophy and four $50 Hannaford gift cards; the second-place team, a trophy plus four $25 Hannaford gift cards; and the third-place foursome, a trophy plus four $10 Hannaford gift cards. Registration for the nine-hole, best-ball tournament is 9-10 a.m. and play begins at 10:30 a.m. and the suggestion donation is $10 per person. Best-ball contestants are asked to chip in an extra $5. Trophies and prizes will be awarded after the tournament at the Stress Free Moose. For more information, call Tornquist at 280-0990. Life is not always easy. Seeing your provider should be. Paul Davis (R-Piscataquis) to name a bridge in Atkinson after hometown hero Capt. Jay Brainard was recommended for passage by the Maine Legislature’s Transportation Committee last week. The bridge on Stagecoach Road crossing the Piscataquis River between the towns of Atkinson and Sebec would be renamed the Captain John “Jay” Brainard Gold Star Memorial Bridge. Co-sponsors of the bill included Rep. Norman Higgins (R-DoverFoxcroft), Rep. Paul Stearns (R-Guilford), Rep. Ray Wallace (R-Dexter) and Rep. Ken Fredette (R-Newport). Brainard lived with his aunt and uncle, Don and Nancy White of Atkinson, during his middle and high school years and graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 2004. After earning his degree from the University of Maine and excelling in the ROTC program, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and trained as an Apache helicopter pilot. During his deployment in Afghanistan, Brainard was killed in action on Memorial Day 2012. “Naming this bridge ensures that the memory of Captain Brainard’s life and his sacrifices will live on for many generations to come in our community,” Davis testified at the committee hearing. “We cannot afford to forget what he, and so many others, have given to secure our freedom.” Davis and Karen Doyle of the Maine Department of Transportation were the only two people to testify at the session. Doyle said that the agency considers “naming of bridges, roadways or other state transportation infrastructures within the purview of the legislature. Simply put, we build them and you name them.” The bill (LD 1571) now goes before the House and Senate for a final vote. The Eastern Gazette * Your HomeTown AdVantage February 19 - 25, 2016 Stearns unhappy with LePage’s Department of Education move by Mike Lange AUGUSTA – Governor Paul LePage’s decision to keep Bill Beardsley on board as interim Commissioner of the Department of Education, but install himself as the de facto head of the agency, has drawn both criticism and questions about the legality of the move. The governor told reporters last week that since Beardsley – by law – can only serve as an interim commission for six months, he plans to reassign him as deputy commission when the time expires. “I can keep him, he keeps working; and when his acting commissioner status leaves, he will be the deputy commissioner and I will be the commissioner,” LePage said. While Democrats overwhelmingly criticized the move, Rep. Paul Stearns (R-Guilford) also said he was unhappy about LePage’s decision. “I am disappointed and puzzled by the latest developments, as well as the continued lack of stability, leadership and direction from Augusta regarding the Department of Education,” Stearns said. “We desperately need steady leadership and direction in that critical department. The latest action caught the education community, including the Committee on Education and Cultural affairs, completely by surprise.” Stearns served for more than 30 years as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent before his election to House District 119 two years ago. He said that LePage’s action may also be illegal. “It remains to be seen whether or not it is allowed, by statute and the Maine constitution, to have the chief executive assume the role of commissioner of a department in order to circumvent the nominating process,” Stearns said. Sen. Rebecca Millett, the lead Senate Democrat on the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee, said that the governor “for whatever reason, doesn’t believe Mr. Beardsley will be confirmed by the Legislature. But instead of letting the confirmation process play out, he’s trying to bend the rules so that he can hand-pick the state’s top education official without bothering with pesky Constitutional requirements like confirmation.” LePage said previously that he didn’t believe Beardsley would be endorsed by the Legislature’s Education Committee since Democrats have a majority on the panel. Paul Davis announces reelection effort for Maine Senate District 4 SANGERVILLE – Paul Davis has announced his intention to run for Maine Senate District 4 in the November, 2016 election. Davis currently holds that senate seat. Senator Davis is currently the chair of the Legislature’s Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee. He also serves on the Taxation and Government Oversight Committees. He is a veteran lawmaker who has served in both the Maine House of Representatives and the Senate. He was previously the Senate Republican Leader and Assistant Republican Leader. “It is an honor and a privilege to represent the people of Piscataquis, Penobscot and Somerset Counties,” Davis said. “The State of Maine has tremendous challenges ahead. Attracting businesses to our state, addressing our tax policies and lowering energy costs are just some of the priorities. These problems are difficult and complex, but I believe we can solve them and move Maine forward. I would welcome the opportunity to once again go to work for the people of my district.” Maine Senate District 4 consists of all of Piscataquis County and parts of Penobscot and Somerset Counties. Paul Davis and his wife, Patricia, live in Sangerville and have two grown children, four granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter. Any citizen wishing to discuss any issue facing Maine can contact Paul at 343-0258 or by email at: sendavis@myottmail.com. (Eastern Gazette photo – Mike Lange) Hearing set on Brownville Junction bridge replacement by Mike Lange BROWNVILLE – Some things get better with age. Unfortunately, Maine’s bridges do not. The Maine Department of Transportation will host a public hearing at the Brownville American Legion starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24 to gather input on replacing the 81-year-old Pleasant River Bridge on Route 11. Maine DOT Senior Project Manager Michael Wight said that if all goes as planned, construction will begin in April 2017 and finish in June 2018. “During construction, traffic will be maintained on a temporary bridge located upstream of the existing bridge,” Wight said. “The bridge will be only one lane with traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals.” According to a legal notice posted on the project, Maine DOT is “particularly interested in learning local views relative to project consistency with local comprehensive plans, discovering local resources, and identifying local concerns and issues.” The new bridge project will cost an estimated $3.5 million, according to the latest Maine DOT work plan. Box Grade A Chicken Legs $ 1.79 Box Lb We Accept MC, Visa, Discover, EBT Cards and Food Stamps Welcome by Mike Lange MILO – After several years of service with the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department, Dover-Foxcroft Police Department and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Dave Wilson was hired as Milo’s third fulltime police officer earlier this month. “Dave is a perfect fit for us,” said Police Chief Damien Pickel, who is also Milo’s town manager. “He believes in community policing; and in a town like Milo, you get to know everybody. It’s much harder in a larger department.” The Milo PD now has Piscataquis County’s only two certified drug recognition expert (DRE) officers: Wilson and Sgt. Robert Cook. Wilson is also a DRE and standard field sobriety instructor at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Although Wilson has left the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s department full-time, he still retains his commission as a deputy and will assist the agency when needed. “I left on good terms,” he said. “But the time was right for a career change.” Pickel has known Wilson since 2009 and said that his DRE certification “will be a big plus for the community. Our drug problems aren’t any different than other towns of similar size. But we’re handling things differently.” Earlier this year, the Milo Police Department became the first law enforcement agency in Piscataquis County to have Narcan on hand, a medication that temporarily reverses the effects of an opioid overdose and restores breathing. Wilson said that it’s much easier for a law-enforcement officer to engage in community policing “when you’re assigned to one community. When you’re a sheriff ’s deputy, you patrol so many different towns that you might have only one or two cases a year in some communities. Now, I can concentrate on the issues that are important to the people of Milo.” Wilson was presented with a citation for meritorious service by the sheriff’s department last year after he followed up on a hunch following a traffic stop in Bowerbank. Later, he found a woman who had been kidnapped and held against her will in a remote camp in the area. “Your astute reading of circumstances that appeared to be normal and your dogged efforts in following your honed instincts resulted in her rescue,” Chief Deputy Robert Young wrote in the department’s citation. “We may very well have been looking at a homicide had you not correctly read the situation for what it was and pursued this investigation with such tenacity and vigor.” Michael Thibodeau, 37, of Hampden was charged with kidnapping, domestic violence assault and criminal threatening. The Hospital Honor Roll names those hospitals whose performance was among the top 25 percent of those measured nationally on a set of quality measures. The metrics evaluate clinical process of care, patient experience and patient safety and are based on Hospital Compare Data submitted to CMS and Leapfrog data. Their scores for Process of Care were above the target in three of the four measured areas. SVH excelled in the areas of: Heart Attack Care, Healthcare Associated Infection and Surgical Care Improvement. SVH exceeded in Patient Experience with a target of 5, the Hospital was at 6. The Leapfrog results met were three out of three. CMS scores were not available at the time. Terri Vieira, CEO/senior vp, EMHS, stated, “This award is a result of the hard work of our employees, medical staff and leadership who have worked tirelessly to ensure our quality goals are met and exceeded each year. When SVH is honored by a national survey, it tells us that we are providing the right healthcare, in the right manner, for our communities.” For more information, contact Linda Cregnole at 487-4024. 0$5. :,//+,7( HOME IMPROVEMENT Licensed Construction Supervisor 28 Years Experience Plenty of References, You Can Be the Next SIDING, WINDOWS, DECKS, ADDITIONS, SHEDS, HOME BUILDING, REMODELING, ROOFS, AND MORE.
