MISSION VALLEY NEWS & VIEWS
"Loreto" (Con't from Page 9)
California, was established in the
city of Loreto and is now a
museum.
Another great opportunity
awaited us the next day to observe
the incredible experience of watching the whales and if lucky, you
might be able to touch one. We
traveled across the Baja peninsula
to go to Puerto Lopez Mateos and
passed through some of the Baja
1000 Race dirt roads. We finally
arrived in Puerto Lopez Mateos

Well seasoned travelers, you
have some of the following hotels/resorts available for your upcoming journey to Loreto on the
Bay.

and boarded our boats with life
preservers, and for the next two
hours cruised to visit the “Sea of
the Whales”, with their fins spread
high above the water for great
photo shots. An exciting time with
everyone yelling, “There’s one!”.
The whales were presenting as if it
was “Show Time” in the Pacific
Ocean.
In the month of January, the
Grey Whales arrive in the protected waters of Bahia Magdalena
on the West Coast of the Baja Peninsula by the Pacific Ocean. You
travel to the small village of Lopez
Mateos, which is the nursery-home
for the Grey Whales.
Small shopping is available,
restaurants are always waiting for
you to stop and enjoy a taco or
burrito with a cold beer or coke!
The only caution I might say is
that in January, the wind does play
a part of the climate, as it is winter
in Loreto, too, but can get windy at
times.
Loreto is quite different from
the sense of mountains, water,
desert and pleasant climate which
was discovered around 1697 was
called, “The capital of all
Californias”, History is waiting for
you to discover the region and enjoy the “catch of the day”: Blue
Marlin, Sword Fish, Tuna, Dorado,
Jurel and Rooster Fish among 850
other varieties to enjoy while visiting.
September 2009
times can be noisy but central.
**Hotel Oasis De Loreto (4
Star) 800-497-3923. A traditional
hotel that loves fishermen surrounded by nice grounds, ocean
views rooms, on a great beach by
the estuary of Loreto. Excellent
bar and good restaurant that the locals really like.
** Cabanas de Loreto, A
must! A sweet bed and breakfast
type hotel in a nice quiet area with
great service and a pool.
**SuKasa Bungalows: Another must! On the border walk,
prices are very affordable, nice atmosphere and grounds. No Pool.
**Coco Cabanas:
Rooms
small. Looks like a summer camp
style cabins, but location is lovely
on Calle Davis, one of the traditional streets of Loreto, one block
from the board walk and beach of
downtown Loreto. Its quite!. Has a
pool, lovely grounds, very nice service, and lots of repeat clients.
**Baja Outpost: Scuba divers
love this place, the food is good,
but the rooms are round, not
square, almost like a hut. Owner is
a scuba diver, Mr. Fichman. Appeals to divers.
Others to consider.
** Hotel Plaza Loreto (3-Star)
011-52-613-135-0280
**Desert Inn Loreto (4-Star)

“Last year’s ‘Fantasy’ sale was
wildly successful. We sold out in
two hours,” says Heramb, who is a
life director of BIA Cares. “Attendees walked away with designer
-selected items for a fraction of the
price. For example, there was a
$2,550 dining table
with five upholstered chairs that
sold for $400, some sofas went for
$100, and accessories were priced
as low as $2. Plus, this year we are
in a larger space with more donated
items.”
“This year’s shoppers will find
a raft of similar bargains. We’ll be
offering everything you’d find in a
home or office — from
one-of-a-kind pieces to beautiful
executive desks to fine artwork to
unusual knick-knacks.”
BIA Cares has raised more than
$2.2 million for local charities in
its 19 years of operation. The foundation helps to build better communities by sponsoring such projects as restoring Little League
fields, building a golf facility for
troubled youth and donating to organizations that assist the underprivileged throughout the County.
The 2008 Furniture Fantasy Sale
added nearly $50,000 to the
foundation’s coffers.
This year’s event will be held
from 8 a.m. until sold out at 3574
Ruffin Road South, one block
south of Aero Drive in Mission
Village. Cash and credit cards will
be accepted. Buyers must remove
all items purchased on the day of
the sale. Please visit
www.biacares.org for updates.
