Turk’s Poultry Operational History
Turk’s Poultry Farm Ltd is a family owned and operated poultry producer
and processing unit. We have been operating in the Kapiti-Horowhenua
district since 1966 as an egg producer and since 1990 as a broiler chicken
production unit. The business currently employs one hundred and seventyeight staff at five locations from Auckland to Foxton and is vertically
integrated from rearing to sales and dispatch of poultry products.
Turk’s Poultry was founded by Mr John Turk (Snr). With the support of his
wife, family and dedicated staff, their hard work and commitment to the
ideals of his original business plan, the company has grown into the
business and staff structure that it has today.
Turk’s Poultry Farm Ltd now deals in products and services that include
eggs, poultry products, small goods, and an engineering firm. This diverse
and challenging range of products and services is watched over and guided
by the Company Manager, Ron Turk, and a five person management team.
Turk’s market is predominately in the North Island with a satelite depot in
Auckland which looks after some major clients. Turk’s main competitors
are New Zealand’s two biggest chicken suppliers; Tegal and Ingham’s for
Chicken products and Mainland Eggs for egg products.
Turk’s Poultry has an excellent working relationship with a diverse group of
suppliers which are involved in the business from raising the chickens and
grain through contract growing, to supply of packaging, parts and machinery.

Natural Flavour and Goodness
When you choose a Turk’s chicken you’re
choosing pure, natural chicken. Free from
hormones and additives; we don’t artificially
fatten our birds; we don’t hide the off cuts
inside so they weigh more. We use nutritionist
specialists to ensure optimum performance
and quality, We produce our own corn feed that
is grown by local farmers so we know exactly
what’s in it and where it comes from. When you
buy a Turk’s chicken you’re buying natural corn
flavour and goodness. Quite simply chicken at
its best.

Turk’s barn-raised chickens are extraordinary.
You first see that from their golden skin, reflecting
all the goodness of sun-ripened corn. In line with
the finest European traditions, Turk’s chickens are
corn-fed. We’ve tapped this centuries old secret to
produce healthy chickens with delicious flavour.
Nestled in the rich rural heartland between the
Manawatu and Kapiti, Turk’s Poultry Farm Ltd has
produced eggs and poultry for over 40 years.
We believe that our size, and family oriented
business lends itself to giving the type of service
and quality demanded by today’s modern end user
market.
As a family business, we take pride in producing
chicken for our customers that’s both full of flavour
and good for you.

Bio Security
Turk’s Poultry Farm Ltd use the two main breeds
available in NZ. These are the Ross and the Cobb 500.
The hatchery brings in fertile eggs and the chickens
become the Grand Parent Stock. These birds never
leave the environment of a Quarantine farm. Thus
ensuring New Zealand’s poultry stock are bio secure
and free from diseases that affect the worlds poultry.
Fertile eggs are incubated and placed on another
Quarantine Farm and become the parent stock. In turn
their fertile eggs are hatched in a hatchery and the day
old chicks are sent to our rearing units.
Turk’s Poultry Farm has 4 contract grower farms for
broilers and two for free range with a shed placement
approximately every 8 weeks.
Each grower farm working under the Turk’s Poultry
Farm banner is controlled by an operations manual and
a Whole Flock Health Scheme. These documents lay
out the conditions and procedures that all our poultry
intended for human consumption must be reared
under. This covers everything from the placement of
chicks to feed and water, visitors on farm, and shed
clean out sanitization.
All this is done to ensure that the birds reaching the
processing unit are of the best quality and in the best
condition to be processed for human consumption.
All these measures ensure that the poultry supplied by
Turk’s is as clean and wholesome as possible.

At Turk’s we take processing quality very
seriously to ensure we are producing the best
chicken in the best possible way. From the
moment the chickens are slaughtered every
precaution is taken to ensure the chicken is
kept clean and wholesome.
As the chicken moves through the plant there
are a number of control points and wash
stations. This ensures the product is kept free
from contamination and begins the cooling
process. After slaughter each bird undergoes a
spin chilling process that ensures that the birds
are clean and at a cold enough temperature to
allow continued processing.
Once the many different types of processing is
completed the product is ready to be shipped
to you, the customer. Turk’s Poultry subjects
its product to regular rigorous microbiological
testing to ensure that the product is of the
highest standard. Turk’s are proud of our results
which consistently place us in the top one or
two companies for overall health status and
campylobacter.

Our aim is to continue to grow and develop both in size and product range while still maintaining
our core values.
Short term goal is 25000 birds a day processed. Future goal 30000 to 45000 birds a day processed.
Also we intend to double our Free Range Flock.
At Turk’s we are preparing ourselves to move into a larger range of further processed and value
added products. With a commitment to obtaining the best quality and type of equipment to
produce a large variety of across the board products.
Turk’s Poultry Farm Ltd process under a R.M.P (Risk Management Program) that is both self
audited and also audited by NZFSA (New Zealand Food Safety Authority)
As a registered processing plant we must pass the audits to remain operational. We at Turk’s
are very proud of our performance history with NZFSA and the fact that we have achieved and
maintained the highest level of audit pass possible speaks highly of our commitment to quality.

At Turk’s we have always tried to use packaging
that enhances the product and customer sales.
Traditionally we may have mainly supplied our
chicken in 5 or 10 kilo bulk packs and whole
birds in a clipped bag, however, we have
recognized the need to improve and enhance
the type and style of packaging currently in use.
In Today’s market there is an emphasis on
higher food safety standards, the need for leak
proof packaging and less human handling of
the raw product. In response to this we have
already begun implementing our new design
sealed packaging for our fresh products and
ready to eat lines.
In the very near future we will be introducing
shelf-ready packaging which will remove
the need for retailers to handle any raw bulk
product. This will save our customers time and
money while ensuring excellent food safety to
the customer.
