Dear Boarders
A warm welcome awaits you at Wainfleet Hall. Whether you have boarded before or
this is your first time away from home, we are here to provide a safe, secure and caring
home for you during the term.
We encourage all boarders to get involved in life at Wainfleet Hall and school and hope
that you will take full advantage of all that is on offer, whether it be sport, the arts,
outdoor pursuits, community activities or membership of our various student
committees.
The friendly atmosphere and the diverse group of well motivated young people from
around the world make Wainfleet Hall a home from home and we have a team of
dedicated staff to support the needs of the boarders. Our aim is for all students to have
an enjoyable and rewarding education at Skegness Grammar School and we look
forward to helping you to achieve your potential.

Welcoming New Boarders
Most applicants will have visited the House at least once before they start as a
boarder. At this time, we will show you all the facilities on offer, talk about routines
and generally try to answer as many of your questions/concerns as we can.
We aim to make sure that each student has a happy boarding life from the start and
we are always there to help. When you arrive you will be given a full induction into life
at Wainfleet Hall. Other boarders will also be there to mentor and support you
through these stages, and we will make sure that you have good links with your
parents during this time.
On arrival, you will be given a House Tutor, who will be a member of the Boarding
House Staff, who will set aside regular tutorial time with you, to discuss any issues,
concerns or challenges you may be facing. Obviously this time is not the only time for
such discussions. We take pride in being an approachable and friendly staff, who will
always listen and provide encouragement when needed!

Statement of Boarding Principles
Admission to Skegness Grammar School Boarding House usually follows a visit by the
prospective boarder and their family where they have a tour of the school and the
boarding house. This is also when the prospective pupils sit an age appropriate entrance
exam. Reports from past or present schools to assess their suitability for boarding are also
taken into consideration. Boarders come from all walks of life from both the U.K. and
overseas, including service families.
This booklet is a source of reference for all boarders and their parents. The following pages
contain information about boarding routines and practices.
The boarding community at Skegness Grammar School is very varied and diverse.
Boarders have many different backgrounds and needs, and it is our aim to treat all
boarders as individuals and provide an environment in which all may flourish.
Boarding at Skegness Grammar School is based on the following principles:

socially and emotionally in an atmosphere of positive encouragement.

Student Committees
Our Boarding Committees allow pupils to express views and make positive changes
on a range of issues. We encourage you to join at least one committee!
Boarding Committee
Allows boarders to contribute ideas and support the day to day running of the house.
Your views on your rooms, furnishings, routines, security, school issues are valuable
and this committee will enable you to make suggestions in a more formal way. We
really do listen!
Eco Committee
This committee has responsibility for encouraging more sustainable lifestyles in the
house (e.g. recycling) and also improving our outdoor area. For example growing
vegetables and building habitat piles. Recently this committee campaigned for the
successful introduction of a water cooler instead of drinking more ecologically
wasteful and expensive bottled water.
Food Committee
Allows pupils to suggest menus/improvements/ideas to meals at Wainfleet Hall. Our
Catering Supervisor meets the group to discuss and record ideas. We are lucky to have
many different nationalities which means varied and interesting meal times! Several
of our boarders have special dietary requirements and these needs are often
discussed at committee meetings.

both at the hall and further afield.

We aim to provide a range of on-site and off-site activities e.g. house competitions,

Departure and return dates to school
Boarders are expected to depart and return to the boarding house by the dates specified
on the term date sheet. Early holidays or late returns are not allowed and written approval
must be obtained from the Headmaster for any extension to the holiday periods.
Any boarder not going home for school holiday periods must give detailed information of
their plans to boarding house staff.

Catering Arrangements & Fire Procedures
Meal Arrangements
School Days: The mid-day meal is a school dinner, the cost of which is included in the
Boarding Fees, up to a cost of £3.50 per day. Any amount exceeding this will be added
to pupils’ end of term bills.
Arrangements for eating at the Boarding House
We all eat together in the Dining Room. Food is cooked on site by a team of qualified
cooks, served using a table rota system. All pupils are expected to attend. We believe
that eating together is sociable, enjoyable and very important! Strictly no mobile
phones at mealtimes.
Care is taken to provide a balanced diet and a choice of vegetarian and non-vegetarian
meals are on offer. Special dietary and religious needs can be catered for.
Boarders have facilities to make their own snacks and hot drinks in their own pupil
kitchen. Food items must be stored in pupil lockers provided, or in the student fridge
(date labelled).
Fire Procedures
1. On discovering a fire:
þ
Shout fire and operate a fire alarm, if one is nearby.
þ
Evacuate the building, closing doors and alerting as many residents as
possible.
2. On hearing the alarm:
þ
Leave the building immediately by the quickest escape route, closing all doors
on your way out.
þ
Report to the assembly area near the path at the front of the building (Green
Fire Assembly Point Sign attached to tree). Line up in Year group order.
þ
Remain silent for a roll call and any further instructions.
þ
Do not re-enter the building until permission has been given.
3. Practice:
There will be a fire practice drill each term.

Pocket Money Arrangements
1. Recommended Amounts
Parents may choose to hand money to houseparents at the start of the term, to be
given as weekly amounts. As a guideline we suggest:
Years 7, 8, 9 - From £5 per week
Years 10, 11 - “ £10 “ “
Years 12, 13 - by negotiation between parents and students
The amounts given above should be sufficient for routine expenditure. The cost of
organised activities, contributions to school trips etc. can be put on the termly bill. The
Boarding House, as a general rule, does not make pocket money loans, nor will it pay
for taxis or train fares.
Alternatively students may have their own bank account and card. This is their own
responsibility but we provide lockable personal safes in rooms for extra security. Cash
can be withdrawn from the ATM at the local Co-Op in Wainfleet. Boarders are advised
not to hold large sums of money. Valuables, passports etc. can be stored in the office
safe if required.
2. Part-time jobs
The purpose of being at Skegness Grammar School is to do well in academic studies.
This requires a great deal of personal study in examination years. We will only consider
allowing senior boarders to take a part-time job if it does not interfere with their
school work and they have permission from home.

Health & Medical Arrangements
1.
The School Nurse is responsible for boarders' health during term-time.
2.
Regular and emergency clinics are held in the Medical Centres at the school
and the Boarding House.
3.
All boarders register with Hawthorn Medical Practice and appointments will
be made as necessary.
4.
Boarders aged over 16 can choose their own local G.P. if they wish and have
the right to refuse or consent to their own treatment.
5.
Boarders are able to see a G.P. either in private or accompanied as they wish.
They are also able to specify if they wish to see a male or female doctor.
6.
Medicines are either kept in a locked cabinet in the Medical Centre and
distributed by a member of staff or, with the School Nurse's discretion,
students can keep their own somewhere safely that prevents use by others.
7.
All medicines are to be handed to the School Nurse at the start of term or halfterm.
8.
Parents must inform the school of any changes in a student's medication or if a
student is subsequently put on medication.
9.
Appointments with the G.P., and optician can be arranged but where possible
routine visits should be arranged during the holidays. Emergency dental
treatment can also be arranged.
10.
There are two sick-bays in the Medical Centre, one for girls and one for boys
with single sex toilet and shower facilities.
11.
In the event of a serious illness or accident, parents will be contacted and a
boarder can return home if a prolonged period of absence from school is
anticipated.
12.
The School Nurse should be informed of any major medical treatments
received by a boarder during the holidays. Boarders' Medical Cards should be
handed in on admission to the House.
13.
The School Nurse offers general counselling support and gives specific advice
in the areas of health education and diet.

No Smoking Policy
In keeping with the rest of the school, the Wainfleet Hall Boarding House is strictly a No
Smoking environment, for staff, students and visitors alike.
There are obvious health and safety reasons why this should be so.

A - Rules
Boarding House rules (see below) reflect the School's Code of Conduct. A boarder has
the right to benefit fully from the opportunities the House provides without
hindrance from others.
These rights include:

the right to learn
þ
the right to enjoy a well-cared for environment
þ
the right to personal safety
þ
the right to security of property
þ
the right to have pride in belonging
þ
the right to equality in the enjoyment of these rights
Everyone must accept responsibility for protecting these community rights by
displaying common sense and common courtesy. Breaches of this requirement may
lead to sanctions.
B - Boarding-House Rules
1.
No smoking.
2.
Medication to be handed in/inform the School Nurse.
3.
Mobile phones are to be switched off during prep, during meals and after
lights out.
4.
Boys and girls are not permitted to enter each others’ bedrooms.
5.
Going off-site - boarders must sign out and include time of return. The
boarding house staff need to know the whereabouts of all boarders at all
times.
6.
Students must not get into other students' cars without prior permission.
7.
Guests visiting the Boarding-house must be signed in.
8.
The boarding office is out of bounds, unless a member of staff is present.
9.
Change out of uniform after school.
10.
No alcohol or weapons or illegal drugs to be brought on site.
11.
Do not borrow or loan personal items especially money.

No boarder is allowed to keep large amounts of money on their person or in
their room.
13.
Dress code including jewellery and hair both in school time and out must be
appropriate for serious study and sensible for living in a community like a
boarding house. If in doubt, please ask first, rather than later.
C - Rules for Responsible Internet Use
The computer system is owned by the school and is made available to students to
further their education and to staff to enhance their professional activities including
teaching, research, administration and management. Internet access is also provided
to boarders out of school hours for leisure and communication purposes.
The school's Rules for Responsible Internet Use have been drawn up to protect all
parties - the students, the staff and the school.
The school reserves the right to examine or delete any files that may be held on its
computer system or to monitor any Internet sites visited.
Access should only be made via the authorised account and password which should
not be made available to any other person;
Activity that threatens the integrity of the school ICT systems, or that attacks or
corrupts other systems, is forbidden;
All Internet use should be appropriate to student's education, although boarders may
also use the system out of normal school hours for IT purposes on leisure and
communication;
Sites and materials accessed must be appropriate to work in school. Users will
recognise materials that are inappropriate and should expect to have their access
removed;
Users are responsible for all e-mails sent and for contacts made that may result in email being received;
The same professional levels of language and content should be applied as for letters
or other media, particularly as e-mail is often forwarded;
Posting anonymous messages and forwarding chain letters is forbidden;

Copyright of materials and intellectual property rights must be respected;
Legitimate private interests may be followed, providing school use is not
compromised;
Use for personal financial gain, gambling, political purposes or advertising is
forbidden.
Students who contravene the school's internet policy will be denied access to the
internet as appropriate.
D - Sanctions
These vary according to circumstances. Most minor indiscretions can be dealt with by
reminding boarders of their responsibilities. For persistent offenders or more serious
offences sanctions might include exclusion from activities, removal of privileges or
other restrictions, such as not leaving the site. We would always let parents/carers
know when this was happening. Exceptionally, boarders can be excluded from the
House, in which case parents would be invited to attend discussions about such
serious cases of misbehaviour.

Contact with Family & Friends At Home
Boarders
Regular communication and contact between boarders and their families is
encouraged via:
Visits - Parents or other family members are most welcome to visit at anytime,
remaining in the common areas. Boarders who have no commitments (school games
etc.) can visit their home on any weekend or part of a weekend. Parents are expected
to organise the travel arrangements. Houseparents should be informed of
arrangements in advance please.
Telephones - these are provided to receive incoming calls and boarders can use these
at any time outside the homework hour.

Letter-writing - There is no compulsory 'letter-writing' but if parents can provide
stationery and stamps then regular letter writing habits do develop.
Email - Contact with home is encouraged using the school email system. Students
have free access to the school network with its broadband connection .
For reasons of personal security, instant messaging and social networking websites are
blocked by the school's systems. This is the same in most UK boarding schools as young
people can be vulnerable to adult predators on these sites. The use of smart
phones/dongles is at parents’ discretion. If you have any concerns please speak to the
boarding staff.
Parents can contact Staff at anytime via letter, email, phone or visiting in person.
In addition to school reports parents will receive regular progress checks and a twicetermly newsletter.

Pastoral & Tutorial Support / Adult Supervision
Pastoral and Tutorial Support
Staff in the House work closely with day school staff in monitoring the work, effort,
and behaviour of students in the school. Informal discussions at the boarding house
can lead to students being encouraged to discuss matters raised with their form tutor
or subject teachers at school. Likewise concerns raised at school can be followed up at
home particularly during prep when staff can offer focussed support and
encouragement to students.
Students are assigned to a tutor (one of the house staff or tutors) and meet regularly
to discuss day to day needs and review academic progress.
Adult Supervision
Night time - at least four adults are resident in the boarding house and are available in
an emergency to boys and girls.
During the school day a member of the boarding team is on duty at all times.
Boarding staff responsibilities end at 6p.m. on the day school breaks up. After the
holidays it starts when boarders sign in at the Boarding House (from 3p.m. the day
before term begins).
The notice board in the main entrance is used to inform boarders as to which
members of staff are on duty at any time.

Participation in Activities
We encourage all boarders to take part in extra curricular activities at the Boarding
House and at School.
The activities currently offered include a range of sports:
including fencing, football, netball, hockey, gym club, archery, dance workshops, golf,
swimming, horse riding, keep fit, running, dramatic arts, plays, concerts, music and art
groups. Please note that some activities such as golf, netball, swimming lessons and
horse riding involve travelling to nearby sports clubs during the evening and incur a
separate cost.
At the Boarding House boarders are encouraged to play sport at the weekend for local
teams (fencing, football, basketball and table tennis).
We also have a well equipped games room, a variety of board games and other “inhouse” activities such as art and craft work. We are lucky to have facilities for tennis,
football, badminton, swingball, volleyball, cricket and croquet. We provide
opportunities for pupils to celebrate key events in different cultures such as Chinese
New Year, Mid Autumn Festival, Independence Day, Bonfire Night, Christmas Parties as
well as a rolling programme of BBQ’s, Quiz Nights and Discos.

Opportunities to Visit Local Towns & Other Family Homes
Accompanied Outings
Regular trips are organised in the school mini-buses to take boarders to the nearby
towns of Skegness and Boston. These usually take place on Saturdays and boarders
can shop, visit the cinema, meet friends etc. Members of staff are available in case of
emergency.
Unaccompanied Outings
Under special circumstances, in discussion with the boarding staff, senior pupils may
use public transport for unaccompanied outings to Skegness or Boston. A regular bus
service has a stop outside the Boarding House and there is a regular train service from
Wainfleet. Those in Year 9, 10 and 11 must be in pairs or a group.
Visits to Wainfleet
Boarders can walk into town, in pairs/groups, and are expected to be back by an
agreed time.
Visits to Other Family Homes
Boarders are encouraged to have friends outside the Boarding House. Boarders can
invite friends "on-site" and they can mix in the common areas. Boarders can also visit
their friends' homes if they first seek permission and leave a telephone contact
number. Overnight stays are allowed on special occasions with permission from
parents.
Permission for all activities is guided by parents, who will be asked to complete a
“Parent Permission Form” on admission to the Boarding House.

Availability of Places of Worship
There is no compulsory attendance at Church but boarders are able to visit any church
of their choice in the locality in their free time or in preference to an alternative
boarding activity.

On some Sundays each term, some of our Sixth Formers hold Church services of their
own, which are open to everyone.
Skegness Grammar School is non-denominational but there is a daily act of collective
worship which is Christian in character which conforms to the requirements of the
Education Acts. Religious Education is delivered by specialist teachers and the
Governors have adopted the Lincolnshire Agreed Syllabus for RE (1993 edition). The
school’s scheme of work for delivering the Agreed Syllabus is available on request.
Pupils may be excused from these aspects of school life if parents make representation
to the Headmaster. Such pupils are supervised in the Library.

Policies - Safeguarding
The main policy can be found on the school website. However the key points are:
1.
The Boarding House has a role to protect children from abuse both in the
House and outside; abuse might be physical, emotional or sexual in nature.
2.
The Deputy Head (Pastoral) is designated by the School to be responsible for
child protection matters in the Boarding House.
3.
Other Boarding Staff are trained in the procedures to adopt should an
allegation of abuse be reported to them, and are aware of the need to be
vigilant in spotting and reporting clear suspicions that abuse may be
occurring.
4.
A boarder's desire, need and right to speak in confidence to others about
matters that concern them should be respected.
Boarding Staff can guarantee that they will only pass on information to the
minimum number of people to ensure that the proper action is taken to tackle
the problem, and will never tell anyone who does not have a need to know, they
will take whatever steps they can to protect the informant from any retaliation
or stress that might be feared as a result of the disclosure of alleged abuse.
5.
Parents of boarders will be informed and consulted at every stage of an
investigation if external agencies are involved.
6.
The boarders are expected to adhere to the school's safe use of internet policy.
Anyone who has a concern regarding a safeguarding issue must report it to Miss
Williams, Child Protection Officer, Deputy Head (Pastoral) and she will report it to
Children’s Services at the Customer Services Centre.

The House Parents or duty staff always ensure that the Boarding House is secure
before end of evening duty. The house has a sophisticated intruder alarm whereby all
exit doors and internal doors to dormitory areas are alarmed. It also has a modern
CCTV system with 360 degrees’ coverage of the outside of the building. There is also a
burglar alarm for holiday periods. All exit doors have digital locks with keypad codes.
The pupils are fully aware they must report any intruders or suspicious circumstances
to Boarding House Staff.
In the interest of security all visitors must sign in and report to a member of staff in the
house. Day pupils may visit the house by prior arrangement but must be accompanied
at all times by a boarder and must stay in common room areas only.

Conduct
The school makes no apology for retaining a traditional approach to discipline
believing that an ordered and structured environment is a happy environment and an
effective one in which to deliver the curriculum. Self discipline is encouraged and all
pupils are expected to wear school uniform. In addition to a general set of rules we
also operate a courtesy code requiring the appropriate etiquette in terms of
addressing staff, standing for staff, guests and visitors entering classrooms and
holding doors open for others.
Moral Code
The school undertakes to promote and educate our pupils in traditional moral values
through our actions within and without the curriculum. We aim to ensure that pupils
absorb a clear sense of what is right and what is wrong and that, both in and out of
school, a clear sense of morality underpins their thoughts and deeds.
Courtesy Code
Members of staff must be addressed by their names, e.g. Mr/Mrs/Miss Smith or by Sir
or Miss as appropriate.
Pupils are expected to hold doors open for staff and pupils (up to year 11) and to stand
when a member of staff or a visitor enters a classroom.
We expect smart appearance, conforming to the uniform requirements. School
blazers must be worn at all times except in certain lessons with a member of staff’s
permission.
Discipline Policy

certificates. For extended commitment to a school subject or activity we award school
'colours'. At sixth form level prefect ship and school or house offices are achievable.
In the event of a pupil falling short of our expectations sanctions used include
detentions (lunchtime) after school Headmaster detentions, effort or behaviour
support cards and, for serious offences exclusions.
If this section has seemed daunting please remember that we have the best interests
of all our pupils at heart. It is only because we care and do take action that we can
continue to claim to be one of the happiest and most effective of schools.
Anti-Bullying Policy
Bullying is a potential problem in schools and boarding houses everywhere. It is also a
problem in everyday life and not just limited to school.
It comes in many forms verbal, physical and mental. It also crosses many mediums
such as the internet, mobile phones etc.
The following guide will help you to be able to deal with the problem and stop it
happening to you.
What should I do if I am being bullied?

listener or our independent visitor.

Try to give as much information about who is bullying you. Keep emails, texts

Policies - Sex Education
Sex Education is delivered through the National Curriculum in Science, RE and PSHE
and Citizenship.
Science covers the knowledge of sexual reproduction, other issues such as personal
and ethical ones are covered within RE and PSHE syllabi. This aspect of education is
underpinned by the school's belief in the importance of a loving, stable family
environment and that the complementary role of parents is vital in helping children to
cope with the physical and emotional problems which sexual maturity brings.
Our aims:

To increase awareness of anatomical and physiological differences arising
from sexual development in relation to the social and emotional needs of
advancing puberty and developing adolescence.
2.
To promote decision making skills in sexual situations based on informed
viewpoints with clear reference to moral and legal responsibilities.

specialist outside agencies are used to supplement teaching in this area.

Disciplinary Action
The school will permanently exclude (expel) any pupil who knowingly brings illegal
substances to school or uses such substances on school premises.
Education
The school fulfils its commitment to teach the sections of the National Curriculum in
which information regarding drugs occur.
Within its pastoral care curriculum the school endeavours to instil into pupils the fact
that drugs (other than those sold in pharmacies or prescribed by medical
practitioners) are illegal and dangerous to health and that involvement with them will
lead to moral and physical decline and police action. We also aim to make pupils fully
aware of the school's disciplinary action in the event of such involvement with drugs.

Worries & Complaints
What to do if you just want to talk to someone
The boarding staff are always ready to help as are close friends and older boarders.
There may be times when you feel that you cannot, or do not want to talk with anyone
in the House nor to your parents. At Wainfleet Hall, we have three independent
listeners who visit regularly and know the students. Their telephone numbers are
listed at the end of this section.
What to do if you want to make a complaint
1.
Sometimes you may wish to complain about a concern or worry. The first thing
to do is to speak to any member of staff that you trust. You can take along a
friend - another student or another member of staff. This will usually resolve
the matter. In most cases issues are referred to the Houseparents, whilst more
serious issues are referred to the Head of Boarding.
2.
If the matter cannot easily be settled it may be necessary to make a formal
complaint. Write to the Head of Boarding, or simply tell him that you wish to
make a formal complaint in person, in which case you can be accompanied by
someone else such as a friend, teacher, or other member of staff.
The Head of Boarding will write the complaint in the Complaints Book and will
attend to it within two days of the complaint being made.
You will then be asked to talk the matter through with the Head of Boarding
and can again be accompanied by another person. If the matter cannot be
satisfactorily resolved then it will be referred to the Headmaster.
3.
If a parent, teacher or another boarder makes a complaint on behalf of a
boarder, then that boarder will be kept informed of the progress and outcome
of the complaint. Any complaint should be made initially to the Houseparents
who will refer it to the Head of Boarding who may then refer the matter
to the Headmaster if the matter cannot be resolved. If the complaint is about
the Houseparents then please take the matter to the Head of Boarding.
4.
Should any complaint not reach a satisfactory resolution then it will be
referred to the Chair of Governors who will call a panel hearing. (For further
details please see our Complaints Policy).
No action will be taken against anyone simply because they have made a complaint.

Other Information
Start and End of each Half-Term
The House is closed for half-term in October, February and May as well as Christmas,
Easter and Summer holidays.
The House will be open at 3.00 p.m. on the afternoon before the start of each halfterm. An evening meal is provided on that day.
Boarders are expected to be in school until each half-term session ends.
Personal belongings can be kept in the House during all holidays except for the
summer break when everything must be taken home. (Those living overseas may
store limited bulky items in the House.)
After the holidays, boarders must return to the House by 9.00 pm (21.00 on the day
before term starts. The House is locked up shortly afterwards and some juniors will be
in bed.
Any unclaimed luggage left in storage for more than 6 months will be disposed of as
appropriate.
Toiletries, Shoe Cleaning
Boarders should bring an adequate supply from home, but extra supplies may be
purchased from local shops in Wainfleet and Skegness.
Haircuts
Haircuts should be arranged during holidays/exeats, they should be reasonable and
appropriate, in both cut, style and colour.
Cars
No Boarder is allowed to travel in another student's car.
Student cars are not allowed to be kept at Wainfleet Hall.
Alcohol and Tobacco
Without exception smoking and drinking are prohibited on site. Anyone breaking this
rule is liable to be excluded from school.

Other Information
Valuables
Boarders are discouraged from bringing expensive items and belongings to the
Boarding House and do so entirely at their own risk. Do not bring too many belongings,
there is only so much room. All boarders are encouraged not to lend or borrow money.
Electrical Items
School insurance will not cover personal items due to the increasing numbers of
laptops/mobile phones etc. For extra security parents should consider taking out
individual personal insurance for such items.
For safety reasons, kettles, rice cookers and heaters (including electric blankets) are
not permitted.
Mobile phones are to be switched off during meal-times, prep time and after lights
out.
All electrical items will be PAT tested by our Site Manager to comply with the Fire and
Safety Regulations. Items which are deemed “unsafe” will be confiscated but can be
taken home at the end of term if wished.
Laundry
A laundry system operates for all boarders. Boarders' laundry is collected daily and is
washed according to a daily rota for processing. Boarders can collect laundry from
their own named “pigeon hole” on return from school. ALL ITEMS must be labelled
clearly with the owner’s name on a woven name tag or permanent marker. The school
does not accept liability for damaged laundry. Net bags should be provided for
underwear and socks. These can be purchased from the Boarding House at the cost of
£1.

Other Information
Period of notice of withdrawal from the Boarding House
Parents must give one term’s notice of withdrawal of a student from the Boarding
House. Failure to give such notice will make them liable for the payment of the
following term’s fees.
Return of boarding deposits
When your son/daughter has completed their education with the school, the
boarding deposit will be returned after payment of all outstanding invoices has been
received.
Holidays and term dates:
Details will be issued annually showing when boarders should return after holidays.
Please try and book flights/travel home as close to the end of term as possible to avoid
the student missing valuable teaching time.

Consultation
We undertake a continuous process of consultation with all those who use our
premises to audit the needs of any disabled stakeholders.
All pupils entering the school with a disability (either physical or learning) are
screened by the Pastoral Heads and steps are taken to ensure that they are not in any
way discriminated against because of their disability. In the case of a learning
disability our SEN co-ordinator will work closely with pupils, parents and relevant
outside agencies to ensure the best provision for their education here. In the case of a
physical disability the pupil is assessed on consultation with their parents and any
relevant outside agencies to ensure that full access to the curriculum and to the
facilites is assured.
As part of our consultation process we regularly take feedback from as many
stakeholders as possible who make use of our facilities within the school.
All potential new members of staff are requested to submit details relating to any
disability they may have so that the school can make appropriate provision to ensure
that no discrimination occurs.
Premises
We regularly monitor our premises to ensure that people with disabilities can access
our facilities. This includes access ramps, disabled toilets, disabled parking spaces
and all necessary handrails.
Medical Provision
We have a medical room specifically dedicated to disabled use. The school is
committed to the training of First Aiders both on the teaching and ancillary staff.
Equal Opportunities
The school's Disability Policy forms part of our general policy of Equal Opportunities

All staff are given relevant training to deal with any specific disability when required.

School Uniform
Introduction
Our pupils have every right to be proud of this school and equally proud to wear its
distinctive green uniform. We believe that the wearing of a uniform encourages self
discipline and distinguishes school, as a place of work, from home as a place of
relaxation and play. Uniform is the great 'leveller' and will cost less than equivalent
casual clothing.
All pupils are required to wear the uniform on all school occasions including Saturday
sports' fixtures and when travelling to and from school. Parents are expected to
support our attempt to maintain high standards of dress.
In all matters of dress and appearance the Headmaster's decision is final and parents
are warned not to waste money on clothing which does not conform. If in doubt
please ask.
Buying the uniform
All items of uniform are available from the school shop*
Non-specialist items are widely available from Marks and Spencer and other chain
stores but parents are asked to ensure that what they buy conforms to our regulations
particularly in regard to style and colour.
Parents should beware of buying so-called fashion items like baggy or shiny trousers,
fancy skirts or open weave pullovers which are not acceptable for school use. Uniform
items are always smarter, cheaper and more durable. The more insistent your child is
that everybody else wears such and such a thing, the less likely it is to be true. If in
doubt please ask.
You should expect a blazer to cost from around £30.00, skirt from £15.50, trousers
from £12.00 and a school jumper from £11.00.
Larger sizes of specialist items and basic items such as blazers, skirts and trousers are
occasionally difficult to obtain except from the school shop. The school also supplies
school ties (issued without charge to all new pupils). Additional ties cost £3.50.
Distinctive ties, worn by members of the sixth form, track suits and sweatshirts
embossed with the school's name in gold, prefects' gold braid and smaller items
including hymn books are also available from the school shop.

School Uniform
Good used blazers, other uniform items, PE/games clothing etc, are available from the
school at the open evening for new pupils and at other times by arrangement. We are
always pleased to accept outgrown uniform especially when pupils leave the school.
At the end of the academic year, Boarders’ parents may pre-order new uniform via the
school ready for September. Please contact Mrs. M. Dales. This will be added to your
next invoice.
Jewellery and Make-up
These are not to be worn (but, if ears are pierced, girls are permitted plain gold or silver
studs).
Design & Technology/Science
These subjects require protective aprons for craft and laboratory use. In Food
Technology aprons are also required. Aprons are available from the school shop.
Your child will need a pen, pencil, eraser, ruler and coloured pencils. Your child does
need a calculator when s/he starts at the Grammar School.

We take every reasonable care to ensure the security of personal clothing but the

be clearly marked with the owner's name and the school can take no responsibility for
any loss or damage. Mobile telephones are permitted, but they may not be taken into

refrigerators are not permitted in boarders' rooms and no pets are allowed. A small
lockable box is provided and recommended for secure storage of personal items.
Hairdryers and Hair Straighteners must be switched off and unplugged when not in
use. If they are found plugged in/turned on they too will be confiscated. A locker is
provided for storage of food/snack items
It is strongly recommended that an 'All Risks' insurance policy is taken out by parents
to cover any potential loss or damage to valuable items. Boarders are encouraged to
give all money and items of value to House Parents for safe keeping.

Uniform must be worn at all times including to and from school. Separate
uniform regulations are published.

Pupils in years 7 to 10.
a.
May not leave the school premises at lunchtime unless they go home
for lunch or have the specific permission of a Pastoral Head or member
of the Senior Leadership Team.
b.
Pupils arriving at or leaving school outside normal working hours must
report to the School Office.
5.
Bags should only be left in lockers.
6.
The Library is a silent area.
7.
Coats are to be left in lockers and should not be carried around the school.
8.
Eating food or confectionery is confined to the school dining hall, sports hall
foyer and to the sixth form centre.
9.
Bicycles must be left in the lockable bike sheds.
10.
No pupil may park his or her car in the school grounds nor may he or she give
lifts to other pupils without the permission of their parents.
11.
Boys must be clean shaven and hair must be short. Eccentric styles or colours
for boys' and girls' hair are forbidden. Dyed hair, highlights and hair gel are to
be in moderation and to look natural. Any pupil who makes a change that
draws attention will be asked to take appropriate steps to modify their
appearance.
12.
Sixth form girls may wear a single plain finger ring and all girls may wear a single
pair of plain ear studs, otherwise jewellery is banned.
13.
Tattoos and visible piercings are forbidden.
14.
No pupil may open another's locker.

At lunch times pupils should be outside (unless wet). Only the Library (for
silent work), Sixth Form Centre and Room 20 for Sixth Form, the Hall for Years
7-9 and the Pavilion for Years 10-11 and the Computer Rooms are fully open.
All classrooms must be vacated (other than those of year 11 pupils). Other
specialist areas may be open with the approval and supervision of the
appropriate member of staff.
16.
Running in corridors is forbidden – pupils should move about the building with
due regard for others, keeping to the left along corridors.
17.
Pupils should not arrive at school before 8am and should leave by 4.30pm
unless taking part in an officially organised activity.
18.
Detentions will be served from 12.55pm to 1.20pm at the first available
opportunity unless permission for a postponement has been obtained. For
more serious or repeated misdemeanours including lack of homework, the
school may issue an after school detention which could be issued by pastoral
staff for 45 minutes after school or for one hour by the Senior Leadership Team
for very serious matters.
19.
Mobile phones, camera and iPods or any other electronic device, except a
calculator, may not be brought into school. Sixth Formers may bring laptops
into school.
General Administration
1.
All pupils are required to participate in the Games/PE programme unless a
letter written by their parents or the Houseparents is given to the teacher in
charge. Pupils are expected to shower after Games and PE.
2.
All uniform items and games kit should be clearly marked with the owner's
name. Other people's property must not be borrowed without the owner's
permission. The school cannot accept liability for loss or damage to personal
property and strongly recommends parents to insure students' property. It is
best if valuable items do not come into school.
3.
The Attendance Officer will contact the parents of any pupil who is absent and
pastoral staff will be in contact regarding any prolonged absences.
4.
Stationery and textbooks are supplied free of charge but remain the property
of the school. Loss or damage to school property must be paid for. We ask all
pupils to preserve the pleasant appearance of the campus and dispose of litter
correctly.

Fees
Invoices
The accounts department will issue all Boarders’ parents with invoices relating to the
accounts for each year. Fee invoices will be sent out to Parents’/Guardians’ home
addresses before the end of each term. These invoices must then be paid prior to the
start of the next term. Three invoices per academic year will be sent home to
Parents/Guardians these being Autumn, Spring and Summer.
Payments can be made by:

by direct payment, bank transfer using your child’s name as the reference.

An invoice will be posted to your designated address in February 2014.
Payment to be made by 1 March 2014.
Inclusive invoicing
This facility is usually for Forces and Overseas pupils and includes extra charges
throughout the term. This is useful if a claim for allowances is made by the parents to
their employer. This fee involves the production of an inclusive invoice, which should
cover all trips, events and musical tuition. Should the amount of extras exceed the
inclusive invoice then a further charge will be made.
Termly Accounts
Each boarder has a termly account where sundry items can be charged, including field
trips, pocket money etc. An invoice will be sent to parents at the end of each term July,
December and March/April detailing the extras charged.

Period of notice of withdrawal from the Boarding House
Parents must give one term's notice of withdrawal of a student from the Boarding
House. Failure to give such notice will make them liable for the payment of the
following term's fees.
Return of boarding deposits
When your son/daughter has completed their education with the school, the
boarding deposit will be returned after payment of all outstanding invoices has been
met.
