Honorees Installed
On Saturday February 19th the Queens
County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and
Cultural Committee held their annual
installation of the Parade Grand Marshal,
Honorary Grand Marshals and the Deputy
Grand Marshals at Antun’s Catering Hall
in Queens Village.

Once Again Goal Achieved
And Then Some!
Mr. Joseph Pepe and his helpers,
grandchildren Holly Cassino and Eric and
Chrystie Rasmussen, through the generosity of many people and organizations have
once again more than reached their goal of
collecting 20,000 Christmas cards for St.
Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Jude’s is www.stjuderanch.org .
Mr. Pepe started collecting the cards for
the sick children at St. Jude’s three years
ago. In the first year he collected 3,000,
which was many more than he had originally hoped for. Last year Joe set a goal
of 5,000 cards and was astonished as his
Rockaway Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal Terence Farrell poses
with Parade President Mike Benn and Parade Vice-President John Brennan
after his installation as the 36th Grand Marshal.
President Mike Benn chose the following
individuals as honorees of the 36th annual
parade which is the second largest Saint
Patrick’s Parade in New York State: the
Grand Marshal of the 36th annual parade
is Mr. Terrence Farrell, vice-president of
LVI Energy, which works in the burgeoning industry of “Greening” New York.
The Honorary Grand Marshals are: Mr.
Kevin Kearney Esq., and Mrs. Dorothy
Brenna.
Deputy Grand Marshals are: NewYork
City Councilman Eric Ulrich; St. Johns
Hospital Emergency Department Director
Victoria Backus; NYC Sanitation Chief
Michael Bellew; Great Irish Fair organizer
Chris Hannan; Kevin Kennedy known for
his work with guide dogs for the blind and
as a photographer; P.S. 43 Asst. Principal
tapped to be the Gael of the Year, was
noticeably absent from the proceedings
due to his much-publicized tirade at an
Albany restaurant. It is unclear at this
time whether Mr. Egan will march in
the parade.
The 36th annual parade will be held on
March 5th 2011 and will start as always
with a mass for Peace and Justice in Ireland
at St. Francis De Sales Church followed by
a breakfast for the honorees at the Knights
of Columbus. Then the parade will be
kicking off from Beach 129th Street at
1:00 pm. Please remember that due to new
regulations concerning parades and their
length the parade will now end at Beach
102nd Street and Rockaway Beach Blvd.
Look for the official Line of March in next
week’s Pointer.
Mr. Joe Pepe and his Grandchildren Holly Cassino and Chrystie and Eric
Rasmussen display some of the 23,500 cards collected for St. Jude’s
Childrens Hospital.
The traditional style Christmas cards
(not the increasingly popular photo
cards) are recycled into new cards by
the sick children by a host of volunteers
at Saint Jude’s. The recycling program
teaches the children basic business skills
and provides an additional source of
funding for the hospital as the “new”
cards are resold on Saint Jude’s website
and in their gift shop. All of the funds
raised by the sale of the cards go right
back into additional programs supporting the children. The website for Saint
little contribution to St. Jude’s netted over
12,000 cards. This year Joe and his helpers set a goal of 20,000 cards and through
the extreme generosity of transplanted
Pointers from as far as Florida and New
Jersey, Joe is proud to announce that they
have once again crushed their goal and
collected 23,500 cards in all.
Once again this year cards were sent in
by a wide array of people and organizations,
they included:

Letters To
The Editor
The following letters are the opinions of its author
and not necessarily those of the Rockaway Point News.
Double Standard
Dear Editor,
Dr. Ronan Tynan the famous Irish
Tenor made an off handed remark to
a real estate agent in Manhattan last
year that was deemed Anti-Semitic.
Since then, he has lost his job with the
New York Yankees, and in addition,
had other appearances canceled. The
situation got so bad, it forced him to
sell his New York apartment, and leave
the City that he loved. On the other
side of the coin, our erstwhile Mayor,
made disparaging remarks concerning
the Irish to a group of Irish Business
People, when confronted, he fluffed it
off. Where was the outrage, where was
the outcry, where was the Media? Can
you say “Double Standard”?
Sincerely,
Jim McEnaney

their families together also the ones that
are living on the edge of society and do
not know how they are going to pay
the mortgage, the electric bill gasoline
or food for their families. There are a
number of social organization, such as
Salvation Army,
Food Pantries, St. Vincent de Paul
etc. that are here to help people in need.
These organizations find themselves at
times unable to keep up assistance due
to the increased number of the people
in need.
While this is happening, the Senate
and Congress in Washington and the
Legislature in our State are playing a
game of Democrats against Republicans
and allowing the needy people to fend
for themselves.
The President has just presented
a budget to the House and Senate for
the coming year. This budget is reducing many of the necessary items that
would be beneficial to the people of
this country.
There is talk of reducing the entitlement programs such as Social Security
and Medicare. These items are the lifeline
for the senior citizens of our country.
In all the articles in the newspapers
devoted to this budget and where cuts
are to be made, I have yet to read of
any cuts in the subsidies to the oil
companies, the Farm subsidies or the
Foreign Aid.
I am sure that the people of these
United States are more deserving of
the Government’s largesse than the
governments of foreign countries.
Sincerely,
Chris Norton

EDITORIAL
By Noreen Schramm
Democracy?
The Will of the People will not be thwarted for sooner or later the urge to
be free of domination will cause a great revolution.
We are witnessing such a great uprising right now in the mid-east and parts
of northern Africa. Egypt is now under the control of its Army since President
Mubarak was forced from office. This peaceful uprising has spread to the unrest
in Bahrain a tiny island nation in the Persian Gulf. Morocco is in turmoil and
Libyan troops are estimated to have killed over 200 of its own people as they
strive to oust Col. Mu’ammar al-Qadhafi from his ruling position. And even in
China, as reported on the Monday evenings World News, is undergoing unrest
in some of its outlying providences.
How is it possible that all of these surges for democracy and free elections
are coming about at this time? The answer lies in the fact that thanks to the
instant communication such as the Internet and social networks like Facebook
along with cell phones that capture video, what was once an internal problem
in a particular country is now broadcast worldwide in what is call “real time”
as it is happening. Governments that used to suppress the first signs of any
challenges to its ruling powers are now helpless to stop their populace from
knowing what is happening.
Libya is trying very hard to jam the Internet and shut down Facebook and
cell phones but still the world knows what it is doing within its borders. The
more repressive governments like Libya try to coerce its people, it is only
succeeding in pushing the people into action. And as helpless as the world
feels in watching their struggle, the other leaders throughout the region are
bracing for their people to pick up the banner of freedom and demand the right
to govern themselves.
Where is this all going to lead to remains the number one question in every
thinking mind? Some might call these uprisings anarchy. Others will term it
a call for change. Still others will say that the people no longer wish to be
governed by a totalitarian state. But the bottom line is once freed from repression, which direction will they go? Will true democracy be embraced or will
it be replaced with a pseudo form of the very governments they are revolting
against. Also will these new governments embrace liberty for all, including
women? The world watches and waits to see what will emerge from these
various revolts. Could their voices continue to reverberate around the globe?
Stay tuned for more to come....

TEEN NEWS
& PRE-TEENS TOO!
by Gert Hendry
A little “follow up” on last week’s
column on George Washington &
Abraham Lincoln in reference to
“President’s Day”.
On Feb. 21st in a column written by
a chairman of Civics Education – he
stated, “by creating President’s Day
combining both men, we lost both of
them, and forced them to share acclaim
with far lesser Presidents.” He went on
to say, “So let us restore separate, special
celebrations of George and Abraham.
On Lincoln’s Birthday we can celebrate
liberty, the preservation of the Union
and the end of slavery, which made the
world sit up and take note that here was
a country unlike any other. On Washington’s birthday, we can honor a man
who set the bar for civilized and noble
behavior”. Our first President and the
“Father of our Country”.
This leads me to bring up the subject of history. No longer being taught
as it should be about your country’s
beginning to this day. Also Geography – concerning the United States
individually and other countries too.
The subjects are called Social Studies
today. The writer of this article also
stated, “Just what content is taught
in our Civics classes today escapes
me.” I agree with him. He then writes
about teaching civics correctly taken
from Honest History, to educate our
youth properly. Teens and Pre Teens,
young adults etc. this should give you
something to think about. History
and Geography of our country is our
Heritage. What do you think (that word
again) of our English (not Language
Arts) becoming the Official language
of our country? After all, isn’t it a
language that we all speak that makes
us the United States of America?
According to a poll conducted the
strongest ever recorded support of
Official Language legislation 87 per
cent support it. There are 31 States
with official English laws. There are
powerful anti-assimilation activists encouraging a multi-lingual country and
a bill that would Ban making English
our country’s official language. These
activities are “encouraging programs
that cater to the millions of people who
live in America yet REFUSE to learn
English”. There is a push to have Official Multilingual Bills in Congress.
Hopefully, the new Congress will not
be swayed in the wrong direction. All
we can do is pray that a bill called
Official English Bill, H.R. 997 will
be considered and approved and the
“English Plus” Bill will be rejected. An
example of problems that arise due to
language barriers. A Key Food store was
sold to Asian people in Flushing. The
title of the article “Food Fight at Asian
Market in Flushing”. It seems that the
selection of foods are not evenly set up
and not a selection that involves American Products. People living in this area
for years find it difficult to shop there
now-since there is no variety of products. Plus – not many people from the
neighborhood are hired. As a result the
language barrier occurs and becomes
a problem. More reason for English
to be the language of our country. As
it is now – drivers license exams, tax
forms, election ballots, welfare forms

“Heard around town that…”
If you haven’t looked at a calendar
lately we are just over three weeks away
from the start of spring. The beautiful
days are coming so get your bikes, light
jackets and dare I say it, shorts ready!
This past Saturday night had the
pleasure of attending the Queens

great night meeting the diverse group of
honorees and dancing and dining with
the committee members.
Understand that also on Saturday
night the Msgr. William F. Burke

to the Knights and Columbiettes on a
great night.

happy to have Mr. Jim Prendergast
come and perform some Irish tunes
on his accordion. Speaking of the
LAOH they have set the date of April
3rd for their 5-year anniversary party.
The party will be held at the Knights

Hope all the kids and teachers had a
great week of vacation this past week and
are charged up for the run to the Easter/
Passover vacation coming up next.
Can’t wait for the Rockaway Saint
Patrick’s Day parade next week. Wonder if Mayor “stereotype” Bloomberg
will have the gall to show up after his
gaffe before the Irish American Historical Society when he jokingly referred
to the Irish around the corner from his
house as totally inebriated and hanging
out of the windows waving. Just imagine
if Christine Quinn or any other Irish
politician made a remark about Jewish
stereotypes in front of a predominately
Jewish crowd, she would have been
ridden out of town and most definitely
out of her office by the backlash. The
man should be boo’ed loudly and often
during the parade.

and “countless other forms are offered
in multiple languages, at taxpayers
expense hospitals, court room interpreting are provided.” In other countries
English is taught and spoken-more so
it should be enforced here.
How about getting a group together
and start discussing topics involving
subjects just written about? It would
be helpful to all involved-you boys and
girls are the future of our country.
Just read, “Drug Sting nets 62 in
projects”. After 6 months of investigating 62 “illegal” pushers were arrested.
These dealers were street crews who
sold Cocaine, Crack, heroin and pot
in housing complexes in Queens. They
also sold oxycodone, ecstasy and BZP
(a synthetic stimulant). To top it off
they were selling within 1,000 feet of
local schools. In so doing they can get
longer sentences. Drugs were sold in
parking lots-outside a Walgreens and
a Popeye’s. This was accomplished
following neighborhood complaints.
Perhaps more complaints and more
reports will find many more drug dealers
arrested and hopefully put away for a
length of time. Remember D.D.D.
Those of you who spent the break
sunning in Florida or away at a ski resort,
hope you had a great time. If you were
here and just did whatever pleases you,
hope you enjoyed yourselves.

Holy Mackerel

Disclaimer: This column is neither about piety nor fish.
Je Recuse
Have you served your turn at jury
duty? Most adults have. In order to be
chosen for a jury, years ago, a prospective
juror was asked if he or she had ever been
the victim of a violent crime. That question is no longer asked as it is assumed
every one has been a victim or knows
some one who has. Another question
that is no longer asked is, “Do you have
relatives that are in law enforcement?”
Here, it is assumed that over the course
of multiple generations everybody has
had a family member in law enforcement.
Positive answers to those two questions
used to be a ticket to being excused from
service. It seems the only way to get a
pass when it comes to serving jury duty
in this day and age is to have a valid medical excuse. For all intents and purposes,
today’s jurors are now required to put
their victimizations and prejudices behind
them when deciding a person’s fate as a
member of a jury.
Judges, those higher members of
society who should be beyond reproach
can and do have an ‘out’. They can recuse
themselves in cases where they might
appear prejudice, but do they? Oft times
the only manner of detecting a judge’s
prejudice is through his admission to the
court. Odd isn’t it that potential jurors
can no longer recuse themselves; but,
judges can. One would think the best
and the brightest who, of all members
of society, should be able to rise above
courtroom prejudice.
It would seem elected judges in small
claims court, family court, civil court,
state supreme court and those judges on
the court of appeals must, even in a tainted
world, comport themselves in a manner
above reproach. Not so! In fact, Chief
Judge Jonathan Lippman recently ordered
all 1,000 elected judges in NewYork State
who received $2,500 or more in campaign
donations or from any lawyer or party to
a case or $3,500 from multiple plaintiffs
or defendants or from an attorney and his
law firm to reveal their relationships and
recuse themselves from trials that give
the appearance of ‘dirt’. In the future
they will be assigned cases according to
their disclosures. Imagine Lippman’s law
now has to be memorialized in writing
after years of no rules allowing judges to
get away with whatever they could. Any
ordinary naïve person might have been
in awe of the court as it is has always
been portrayed as the object of respect
on every level in every state. Apparently
it was not that way to the chief judge
who ordered his judges to reveal their
prior associations. If it is becoming more
difficult to keep our state courts fair what
is to be said for fairness on the United
States Supreme Court?
When Justice Antonin Scalia went
hunting with then Vice President Cheney,
it wasn’t just inappropriate, it was antijudicial. His association with the Koch
brothers who are billionaires by oil, is
open and an affront to all who think
court members should be aprejudicial
with respect to big business and environmental before the court. What must
half of U.S. voters think when justices
who are supposed to decide a case on its
merits, tip off their hand with the company they keep. Being named to the court
has its pluses and minuses. The pluses
are prestige and power. The minuses are
having to appear neutral. For appearing
prejudice, a justice should lay himself
open to being removed from the bench
at the very most and use his option of
recusal at the very least.
More recently Justice Clarence
Thomas made news for spending four
days rubbing elbows at a conference
of heavy hitter Republicans called by
former Veep Dick Cheney in 2008. He

must have thought it inappropriate as
he only admitted to ‘dropping by’ the
meeting. His four day stay was revealed
later on. His presence there represented a
flagrant violation of the spirit of fairness
and most certainly questions his ability
to serve his country without prejudice in
political decisions. He, like Scalia, is a
darling of the Koch brothers and their oil
billions. Can either of them be trusted to
determine environmental issues, drilling
etc. without prejudice?
Judge Thomas’s wife, Virginia, who
earns big money as a Tea Party lobbyist
and recently opened a consulting firm
and calling herself ambassador to new
members of Congress, is an extension of
this issue. Should the spouse of a Supreme
Court Justices be allowed to participate
in political events while her husband
serves on the highest court in our land?
Undeterred, Virginia Thomas continues
to flaunt her politics lessening the esteem
and respectability in which the court is
held. The Thomas’s blatant allegiance to
the right should not be tolerated nor should
left leaning jurists and their spouses who
flaunt their politics. When a case comes
up before the court the American people
should want to be assured that it will be
judged on its merits rather than the personal political leanings of the justices.
Virginia Thomas and all future spouses
of justices must not be allowed to associate with factions that call their spouses
decisions into question.
Is there anything to be learned from
judges and their ability to judge? In the

ROCKAWAY DOINGS
by SARA & RICHARD BERGER
There has been talk for months
that the city was supposed to be doing something about Beach Channel
Drive, and the bay bulkhead wall, from
Beach 116th Street to roughly Beach
149th Street, where the bulkhead wall
is on Gateway National Recreation
Area property. In recent days, a street
collapse took out the right westbound
lane between Beach 130th and 131st
Streets, as well as the small sidewalk
area between the street curb and the
wall. It’s deep. We know it’s deep,
because Richard was certain he heard
an echo from it.
Saturday night, February 19, we
had, after almost a week above the
normal winter temperatures, a return to
seasonal cold. This was accompanied
by sustained high winds, pushing what
was probably a lunar high tide, throwing a lot of spray over the bulkhead
wall, all the way west to Riis Landing
at the old Coast Guard Station. So
heavy were the winds off of the Bay,
that either water spray or blown sand
repeatedly obscured vision, even on
the State Road, all the way west, from
Beach Channel High School to Beach
222nd Street.
What surprised Richard and his
girlfriend was that the right hand
westbound lane of Beach Channel
Drive was now blocked off by traffic
barrels from Beach 130th Street, to the
turn by Beach 144th Street. The lane
did appear to be flooded.
More on this as we investigate.
We recently were alerted that some
non-Rockaway based “Conservation
Groups” are possibly trying to force
the closing of sections of the Riis Park
and Fort Tilden Gateway National
Recreation Area. What follows is from
Community Board 14’s Ad-hoc Committee on Public Access at GNRA:
“Gateway National Recreation
Area (GNRA) is developing a new
Management Plan which will determine how we can use the park (espe-

comment period was extended until
3/15/11. The link to make comments
is http://parkplanning.nps.gov/commentForm.cfm?documentID=36924
“Environmental advocates from
outside of Rockaway have made numerous complaints that Ft. Tilden has
too much use. GNRA management is
taking those complaints very seriously.
There are plans afoot to make users
of Ft. Tilden pay user fees to make
it so expensive for active, organized
recreation that we will not be able to
afford to use the park anymore. RMAC
has already been forced to end the Fall
Festival and concert series because
of these same cost issues. Is Little
League next? CYO soccer? Rugby?
This comment period will be used as
the justification for keeping Rockaway
people out of Ft. Tilden.

SFDS Pre K Celebrates the Letter P
Just like the all-time favorite show Sesame Street, the Pre-K students at St.
Francis de Sales have days or weeks to honor the letters of the alphabet. On Friday, January 28th, the students celebrated the letter Pp! What better way to make
letters and literacy come alive than children wearing Pajamas to school and to
have a Pancake breakfast. Parent volunteers came to assist children in following
a recipe to make pancakes and then all enjoyed eating them in their PJ’s. Children
and parents then enjoyed a game of Bingo where everything on the card started
with the letter Pp. There were songs and art activities focusing on the letter of the
week. It wouldn’t be a literacy celebration without a story or two. Students sat on
the rug while one parent read the classic tale If You Give a Pig a Pancake. It was
the PPPPerfect PPPParty with great PPPParent PPPParticipation!

Pheffer Announces Opportunity

Last column I talked about if you
were buying a personal computer, what
brand and type would it be? We arrived
at no particular brand, (shop by price)
and it should be a Wireless Laptop.
Laptop means the whole computer
is like an open “book”, the display is
one page of the “Book” and the other
is the keyboard.
NOTE! Laptop computers have a
fan inside to keep the works cool, they
exhaust the heat out the bottom, so they
shouldn’t sit on a pillow, or your lap,
they should sit on a hard surface, so the
heat can escape.
Why would I want to be on the Internet? There are countless uses, and the
longer you use the Internet, the more
uses you’ll discover.
E-Mail is a big one. An easy way
to keep in touch at no expense. Keep
in touch with everyone in your family
and friends. Besides text that you write
in an E-Mail you can send and receive
photos. Once you learn how to scan
documents and anything that will fit in
a scanner, you can send them also.
We do some online banking. Need
to move money from a Savings Account
to the Checking Account. Check for
outstanding checks having been, or not
been cashed. Check your balances.
Purchasing online at Christmas is
indispensable, especially in Breezy
where shopping is limited. You pay with
your Credit Card as in a store. Using
the computer and internet to compare
prices of what you are interested in buying from many different sources. You
often can buy on the Internet without
sales taxes.
I’m going to mention two things that
I was able to do with my computer on
the Internet.
3 years ago I had hit a deer returning
from a hunting trip and it broke the light
assembly in the front right fender of my
1989 Mazda. Because the car had to pass
the rigid inspection system here in NJ
the light assembly had to be replaced.
Now where can you find the part for a
20-year old car? Drive 20 miles to an
auto junkyard and hope. Or look on the
Internet where I found one, brand new
in the original box.
Some time ago my Daughter’s
Gold Star dehumidifier needed fixing.
I determined what part I needed but I
had no parts catalog to get the name
and part number of the part I needed.
I went on Sears web site, found the
dehumidifier, found the parts catalog,
got the part number, and ordered it from
Sears on line, and had the part in two
days without leaving home.

Assemblywoman Audrey I. Pheffer is pleased to report that New Yorkers now have the opportunity to help support our volunteer firefighters and
emergency service workers through a voluntary contribution on their 2010
New York State income tax returns.
“In the 23rd Assembly District, we have the highest number of volunteer
firefighters and emergency service departments anywhere in New York State.
This is a wonderful opportunity for us to contribute to these organizations
that are so vital to our safety and well-being,” said Pheffer.
Legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Pheffer was enacted in 2009
to establish the Volunteer Firefighting and Volunteer Emergency Services
Recruitment and Retention Fund, and to provide a tax check-off on state
income tax forms whereby gifts to the fund can be made.
“The Volunteer Firefighting and Volunteer Emergency Services Recruitment and Retention Fund will help to recruit and retain the brave men and
women who so selflessly staff our volunteer fire and volunteer EMS departments,” said Pheffer.
For more information on the tax check-off, visit www.nystax.gov.

Stuck on a crossword puzzle.
GOOGLE will answer it.
Want to see what someone in California or Texas home looks like. If you
know the address go on GOOGLE Maps
and you’ll see the home from the air or
in a street view.
There’s an application called ZILLOW and with it and the home’s address
you can find the assessed valuation, the
property size, and the taxes.
If you know someone’s landline
phone number but don’t know where
they live, there’s a “Reverse Lookup”
site that will give you the address if
it’s listed.
I file my Income taxes on line using “Turbo Tax” and have my returned

The Rockaway Artists Alliance
presents:
The Life of Still Objects
The Rockaway Artists Alliance is
certainly not standing still as they shake
off the grays of winter to present another
successful exhibition. Showcased in the
inviting sTudio 6 gallery at Fort Tilden,
The Life of Still Objects draws together
the work of ten talented artists in RAA’s
second show of the year. Through photography, painting and even quilt, the
exhibition explores the motion and emotion shimmering just below the surface
of everyday objects and places.
The Life of Still Objects will run from
Saturday, February 19 through Sunday,
March 27. An opening reception will be
held on Sunday, February 20 from 124pm. There will be refreshments, music
and good company. Several of the artists
will also be on hand.
For The Life of Still Objects, The
artists have used their imagination and
skill to conjure up new interpretations
of the ‘still life’ using inventive angles,
subjects, juxtapositions and contexts.
Such intriguing titles as “A Trinity of
Ties in Paris,” “Flight”, “The Wood
Shop”, “Hot Peppers”, “Half Empty”,
“Blue Teapot”, “Riis Towers,” “Beach,”
appropriately “Still Life II”, and “Modern Onions in Early 17th C. Japanese
Oribe Bowl” bring to life a world full
of objects we feel like we are seeing
for the first time. It is a world that the
Rockaway Artists Alliance invites all to
come and experience for themselves.
The Life of Still Objects artists
include Sydell Rothefel, Stephanie
Schmidt, Ralph Petagna, Maryann
McEvoy, Audrey Irwin, Mary Meade,
Jessica Schulman, Susan DeCastro, Dan
Guarino and Joseph Abbate.
Gallery hours are from 12-4pm every
Saturday and Sunday and by appointment. Admission to the gallery and all
events are free, as is parking. For more
information on exhibitions, events, meetings and directions please call (718) 4740861, e-mail info@raa116.org or visit

Crowley Reaction to Mayor’s
Proposed FDNY Cuts and
Weekend’s Deadly Fires
NewYork City Fire & Criminal Justice Services Committee Chair Elizabeth
Crowley, in response to Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s proposed FDNY budget
cuts for Fiscal Year 2012, stated:
“Once again, the Mayor’s budget is forcing the FDNY to roll the dice on
public safety. The State is being unfair in its distribution of funding to the City
but it is the Mayor who decides what to cut and what to keep. At a time when the
City has dumped billions of dollars into a failed 911-system upgrade, and will
spend millions more to have NASA try to fix it the Mayor is reducing FDNY
staffing and proposing to close 20 fire companies. Simply put, it doesn’t matter
how fancy our 911-system is if there’s no one at the firehouse to answer your
emergency call. As we can see from the deadly fire in Brooklyn last Friday,
closing companies at a time when our fire services are responding to more
emergencies than ever before will jeopardize the lives of New Yorkers.”

On February 5th Juniors Katherine
Leon and Kaitlyn Raynor of Saint Saviour High School, accompanied by Ms.
Regina Bellettiere, teacher and moderator of Student Government, attended
the National Leadership Conference
at Pace University. The trio attended 4
presentations and heard several keynote
speakers. The highlight of the day was
the class on “brainstorming and idea
making”. The reason was the presenter,
Anne Bellettiere, alumna of Saint Saviour, class of 2003, who also helped
organize the entire event. Kaitlyn and
Katherine both agreed that having one
of their own speaking at a Leadership
Conference was both impressive and
quite an accomplishment. It speaks
volumes about the type of women Saint
Saviour has educated and help mold and
continue to do so to this day.

who were unable to
attend, but have supported our

The evening was a huge success, which

President Steven T. Stathis.
Our community realized Steve’s
dedication and commitment to our
organization, and as a result of that,
we had a record breaking 436 people

an unbelievable acknowledgment to our
leader. Not only did people come out in
droves to attend the dinner,
but our annual dinner journal
was the largest to date.
Thank you to all the businesses and

Thanks to the generosity of so many

Easy Breezy Recipe
Eat your way to a winter “Tan”
Turns out the antioxidant compounds in red, orange, and yellow produce
can give your face a healthy glow, if you eat proper amounts of them. So pick
up those red bell peppers, grab a bag of oranges, and snap up some yellow
string beans this week.
The special compounds that make skin look bright and healthy? “Carotenoids”. And research shows that, when eaten in high amounts carotenoidcontaining fruits and vegetables can give complexions a warm hue similar to
the golden glow of a light summer tan. The extra-good news is that, unlike
a tan, a carotenoid glow doesn’t just look healthy. It actually is healthy.
Mounds of research show that carotenoids help enhance both immune-system
function and reproductive health. So a healthy-looking, produce-induced
glow on the outside may be a clear indicator of good things happening on
the inside as well.
Enjoy the Yukon Gold and Sweet potatoes, and get that winter glow,
Bob Melli
Yukon Gold & Sweet Potato Glow
Ingredients:
1 pound(s) Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 1/2-inch chunks
1 pound(s) sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 1/2-inch chunks
½ cup(s) low-fat milk
2 tablespoon(s) butter
1 teaspoon(s) brown sugar
¾ teaspoon(s) salt
¼ teaspoon(s) freshly ground pepper
Directions:
Place potatoes and sweet potatoes in a large saucepan and add enough
water to cover. Bring to a boil over high heat and cook until very tender when
pierced with a fork, 20 to 25 minutes.
Drain the potatoes, then mash them in the pot to the desired consistency.
Place milk and butter in a small bowl and microwave on High until the butter is mostly melted and the milk is warm, 30 to 40 seconds. (Alternatively,
place in a small saucepan and heat over medium until the milk is warm.)
Stir the milk mixture, sugar, salt and pepper into the mashed potatoes until
combined.

For-Profit Colleges
The value of a good education cannot be overestimated. Those with a solid
base of knowledge in their chosen field
of work and training in the latest skills
and techniques are more likely to be
hired or promoted. As with any major
decision, prospective students should do
their research and shop around to find
a suitable program. Those considering
a for-profit college or university should
also be aware that several reports have
raised concerns about the business practices and academic standards of some of
these institutions. While most for-profit
schools, which offer associate’s and
bachelor’s degrees, industry-specific
certificates, and technical training, are
honest and ethical in their dealings, it is
important to keep an eye out for those
that employ questionable practices.
The following tips can help you avoid
potential pitfalls before signing on the
dotted line.
First, when considering a for-profit
college, it is important to make sure
that the institution is accredited. Ask
the recruiter which agency provided the
accreditation, and contact the agency to
confirm. The United States Department
of Education maintains a database of
postsecondary schools that have been
PAGE 17
accredited by approved agencies, which
is available at: http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/. Since unaccredited degrees
are not acceptable to most employers or other colleges, determining a
school’s accreditation status is critical.
Be particularly wary of unaccredited
schools that offer extremely short and
inexpensive degree programs. These
entities, which often pose as legitimate
colleges, are commonly referred to as
“diploma mills.” Any college claiming
it will grant a degree upon completion
of a single test or based mainly on life
experience is most likely illegitimate.
Second, beware of the hard sell. An
August 2010 investigation conducted by
the Government Accountability Office
(GAO) found that some recruiters used
high-pressure tactics on GAO investigators posing as prospective students,
such as one recruiter that encouraged
the investigator to sign a contract
before speaking with a financial aid
representative and another that grossly
over-estimated the earning potential
of graduates during the sales pitch.
Deciding which institution to attend is
a serious undertaking that should not
be rushed. If you feel uncomfortable,
tell the recruiter you need more time to
(L-R) Patricia Marrocco, Angela Miller, John Rodriguez, Paula Migliore (from
Providence House), Lisa Longobardi, Michael Gray, Marzena Bochnak,
Brenda Alvarez, Michelle Espinal, April Lewis.
think and walk away.
Third, as part of your research, you
should determine the price of similar
programs at other schools, including
non-profit institutions, such as community colleges, to ensure that the tuition is
comparable and fair. The GAO reported
that one college it investigated offered
a certification program in massage
therapy for $14,000, which contrasted
sharply with a similar program at a
nearby community college that would
have cost $520.
Lastly, be sure to request as much
information about the program, such as
its duration, cost, and graduation rate,
as you may need to make your decision,
and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
For additional tips on avoiding diploma mills, you can view the Federal
Trade Commissions’ brochure on the
subject at: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/
pubs/ consumer/alerts/alt149.shtm. For
more information about the postsecondary school accreditation process, you
may visit the United State Department
of Education’s website on the topic at:
http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/.

members of the RAA Writers Group.
Performances will start at 2pm.

presenting future projects together,
but the Rockaway Artists Alliance is
looking forward to continuing working closely with the Gateway National
Recreation Area and the National
Park Service.
The RAA invites all to come enjoy
both art and nature at its best.

After the decision by the United States to veto the United Nations resolution condemning Israeli settlements, Rep. Anthony Weiner released the
following statement: “The United States made the right decision to veto this
resolution.” “Questions about settlements do not belong at the United Nations. They belong at the negotiating table. I doubt we will see a resolution
condemning President Abbas for walking away from peace talks.”

maximum credit of $2,000 per year.
Qualified fuel cell property (must have a
nameplate capacity of at least one half kilowatt
of electricity using an electrochemical process, and have an electricity-only generation
efficiency greater than 30%. Outside swimming pools or hot tubs do not qualify)
For 2006-2016, the credit is 30% of the
cost of qualifying property expenditures (up
to the maximum of $500 per half kilowatt
of capacity)
Qualified small wind energy property
(property that uses a wind turbine to generate
electricity for a dwelling unit)
For 2009-2016, the credit is 30% of the cost
of qualifying property expenditures. There is
no annual limit on the credit amount
For 2008, the credit is 30% of the cost of
qualifying property expenditures, limited to
$500 for each half kilowatt of capacity, for a
maximum credit of $4,000.
Prior to 2008, a credit for this type of
property was not available.
Qualified geothermal heat pump property (property that uses ground or ground
water as a thermal energy source to heat the
dwelling unit or a thermal energy sink to cool
the dwelling unit, that meets Energy Star
requirements in effect when the expenditure
was made)
For 2009-2016, the credit is 30% of the
cost of qualifying property expenditures (no
maximum).
For 2008, the residential energy efficient
property credit is 30% of the cost of qualifying
expenditures, limited to a maximum credit
of $2,000.
For 2006 and 2007, this type of property
was claimed as part of the nonbusiness energy
efficient property credit.
AMT and Subsidized Financing Beginning in 2009, this credit is allowed against
AMT, whereas before 2009 the credit was
not allowed against AMT. Also beginning
in 2009, qualifying property purchased with
funds under a subsidized financing program is
eligible for the credit. Prior to 2009, property
purchased with any subsidized funds did not
qualify for the credit. “Subsidized financing”
is any program whose principal purpose is
to provide financing for projects that are designed to conserve or produce energy under
a federal, state, or local program.
Basis If a taxpayer qualifies for and uses
PAGE 19
the residential energy efficient property
credit, the taxpayer’s basis in the qualifying property is reduced by the amount of
the credit. The credit is nonrefundable and
any unused credit may be carried forward to
the following tax year. An expenditure for
energy efficient equipment qualifies based
on when the installation is completed.
Dwelling unit A “dwelling unit” includes
a house, apartment, condominium, mobile
home, boat, or similar property, which provides basic living accommodations such as
sleeping space, toilet, and cooking facilities.
For all property qualifying for this credit
(except for qualified fuel cell property), installation must be in a dwelling unit that the
taxpayer uses as a residence. For example,
property installed in a taxpayer’s second
home or vacation home - but not a rental
unit - is eligible for the credit. For qualified
fuel cell property, installation must be in the
taxpayer’s primary residence (within the
meaning of §121).
Dwelling units under construction Qualified property that is installed in a dwelling unit
under construction (either new construction
or reconstruction) may qualify for the credit.
However, for purposes of this credit, an expenditure for such qualifying property is treated
as made only when the taxpayer begins to use
the property in which the qualifying property
is installed.

“It is of great importance to set a
resolution, not to be shaken, never to tell
an untruth. There is no vice so mean,
so pitiful, so contemptible; and he who
permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it
much easier to do it a second and a third
time, till at length it becomes habitual;
he tells lies without attending to it, and
truths without the world’s believing him.
This falsehood of the tongue leads to that
of the heart, and in time depraves all its
good disposition.” --Thomas Jefferson,
letter to Peter Carr, 1785

SUNDAY – 20 FEBRUARY
The Scripture lesson last Sunday
included Lev 19:1-2,9-18, Mat 5:38-48
and Ps 119:33-40, continuing our study
of The Sermon on the Mount and the
forerunner Old Testament passages. As
a concise guide to everyday living, The
Sermon is tough to beat.
Being God’s People was the overall
theme of The Sermon. In his sermon,
Philip Frabosilo reminded us that we first
must build a strong, firm foundation in our
minds to be able to build a durable, productive and satisfying life that withstands
the storms that come our way. “... for no
one can build on a firmer foundation than
on Jesus.”

precise and clear in establishing what
mindset people should adopt for their
life and what behavior is acceptable; one
to another. This is done many places in
the Bible; a noteworthy example being
this weeks’ referenced scripture from
Leviticus 19 involving moral and ethical
behavior among us. The first two verses
convey the overall emphasis: God is holy
and God’s people must be holy.
The Psalmist depicts holiness as a
hunger to know and walk in God’s ways.
Paul’s Epistle is a reminder that we belong
to God as a holy building, as a temple.
The key to this temple is to be considered
foolish to the world but wise to God.
The parallels between the text in Leviticus 19 and Matthew 5 are a reminder
that Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount was
a commentary on Old Testament Law.
God’s word spoken through Moses and
by Jesus remind us that holiness is as
much about ethical thought and behavior
as it is about worship. Here are a few
key passages that bear repeating; and I
won’t attempt to say it better than the
originators:
The LORD said to Moses, (Say to the
people): “Be holy because I, the LORD
your God, am holy. Each of you must
respect your mother and father, and you
must observe my Sabbaths. I am the
LORD your God.
“Do not turn to idols or make metal
gods for yourselves. Do not go over your
vineyard a second time or pick up the
grapes that have fallen. Leave them for
the poor and the foreigner.
“Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive one another. Do not swear falsely
by my name and so profane the name of
your God. Do not defraud or rob your
neighbor. Do not hold back the wages of
a hired worker overnight. Do not curse the
deaf or put a stumbling block in front of
the blind, but fear your God.
“Do not pervert justice; do not show
partiality to the poor or favoritism to the
great, but judge your neighbor fairly. Do
not go about spreading slander among
your people. Do not do anything that
endangers your neighbor’s life. Do not
hate a fellow ... in your heart. Rebuke
your neighbor frankly so you will not
share in their guilt. Do not seek revenge
or bear a grudge against anyone among

Hotel La Rose, Santa Rosa, California ~ Sonoma County
One of my favorite things to do
when I travel is to stay at hotels listed
on the Historic Hotels of America
list. These hotels are considered to be
part of the National Trust for Historic
Preservation. These hotels range from
big city “palaces” to smaller inns and
rustic lodges that offer premier service
and comfort in settings that highlight
and preserves the vibrant richness of
our historic past.
One such hotel is Hotel La Rose in
Santa Rosa, California. Full of history
and charm, Hotel La Rose has been an
anchor for the Historic Railroad Square
since 1907. Beautiful architecture,
friendly and attentive staff makes this
a perfect hotel for those exploring
Sonoma County.
The hotel has two buildings with the
elegance and charm in the main building built in 1907 from locally quarried
basalt blocks or the airy ambiance of
the Carriage House built in 1985.
With over 300 wineries in 13 regions
in Sonoma and The Snoopy museum
“AKA Charles M. Schulz Museum”
you will have many choices of activities in the area.

your people, but love your neighbor as
yourself.”
Likewise, on the Mount, Jesus said,
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for
eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do
not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps
you on the right cheek, turn to them the
other cheek also. And if anyone wants to
sue you and take your shirt, hand over your
coat as well. If anyone forces you to go
one mile, go with them two miles. Give
to the one who asks you, and do not turn
away from the one who wants to borrow
from you.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love
your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But
I tell you, love your enemies and pray for
those who persecute you, that you may
be children of your Father in heaven. He
causes his sun to rise on the evil and the
good, and sends rain on the righteous and
the unrighteous. If you love those who love
you, what reward will you get? Are not
even the tax collectors doing that? And if
you greet only your own people, what are
you doing more than others? Do not even
pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as
your heavenly Father is perfect.”
All these admonitions were considered when Jesus replied to a question
about the importance of God’s Laws:
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind.’ This is the first and greatest
commandment. And the second is like it:
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the
Law and the Prophets hang on these two
commandments.” Mat 22:37
Would you agree there is no ambiguity
or terms difficult to understand? There is
no complicated or convoluted reasoning
to have to interpret and no wiggle room.
Whether you conform to these laws for
living because God said so, or because you
selfishly recognize their value to creating
a successful and happy life for yourself, is
up to you. It may be worthy to note that
your mind will find it infinitely easier to
think and have you behave in ways that
you voluntarily choose for yourself than if
you think you are coerced. Whatever you
choose, God always knows what is going
on in the deepest recesses of your heart
and mind. The choice for you in this life
and whatever comes next remains up to
you. Making an informed choice might
prove valuable.

future when there is a vacancy on the
Supreme Court, the vacancy should be
filled by the best and the brightest jurist
in our land. Recommendations should
come from lawyers and judges throughout the country. Decisions must be on
the side of the best interpreter of the law
and the greater good of society, not the
good of a particular party or issue. Placing prejudices aside, justices must go out
of their way to be fair especially in light
of decisions that could be interpreted
as political. If a potential justice cannot
set aside his personal leanings, he must
withdraw from consideration for the
court. Likewise, if a sitting justice finds
it impossible to write his or her decisions
without invoking personal prejudice, he
or she must be given the choice to either
recuse himself from that particular case
or resign from the court.
A seat on the Supreme Court, for
some, has become too political to be fair.
When future potential jurists are vetted,
the only question they should be asked
is, “Is your affiliation with any political
party or business so strong as to prevent
you from rendering a fair decision? Supreme Court justices, just as those elected
judges in New York State must be above
reproach. New rules for service, if not
already enacted must be mandatory. If
not, sitting members of our courts will
be looked at with a jaundiced eye. If new
rules governing judges are good enough
for New York State, they should be good
enough for the nation.

It finally happened, sunshine and
warmth, and now I can see my lawn.
In Breezy you should be able to see
the gray sand. Friday was like a summer day and I was able to remove my
Christmas lights from the bushes, and
I’m glad I did it, because today, Saturday, it’s barely 40 degrees and blowing
50 miles per hour.
I shouldn’t mention wind here in the
mainland as being excessive because
its only wind. Here in the World a high
wind is just that, lots of wind. But in
Breezy the high winds are accompanied
by waves of blowing sand. Coming out
from behind a home into the open often
will get you a face full of sand. Ears,
eyes, and your mouth will suffer. Move
your teeth across one another and they’ll
grind the few grains that happened to
get in, the corners of your eyes will have
little globs of sand, and exploring your
ears will also find it there. If you have
to go out in this wild gale be prepared.
Wear a stocking hat that will cover
your hair and ears, and either goggles
or wraparound sunglasses. One grain of
sand in the eye could ruin your whole
day. And to complete the outfit, wind
a long scarf around your neck to cover
your nose and mouth. It’ll keep sand
from getting inside your collar, your
mouth, and nose. Looks silly? Yes, but
you won’t be rubbing sand out of the
corners of your eyes, your ears, and
trying to get the crunchies out of your
mouth. Better yet stay indoors.
But don’t despair signs of Spring
are around, my daffodils are up about
3 inches and the other early arrivals are
making bulges in the soil.
Enough about the wind, but its hard
to dismiss when you can hear its howling
and hear the house creak a little when an
extra strong gust hits, the name of the
game is stay indoors till it abates.
A new subject, grocery shopping.
Lately I’ve taken to shopping for our
groceries and is that an eye opener. We
have a town with NO Supermarket.
Why? Because of NIMBY. “Not in
my back yard” We also have everyone
standing on their front porch to use
their cell phones. Why? Again NIMBY.
Antennas are for some place else.
Back to shopping for grub. We have a
Shop Rite supermarket in the next town.
Every year Shop Rite has a sale called,
Can Can. Its advertised with a line of
Can Can dancers and all the canned
goods are priced so low that you can’t
resist buying, and buying some more.
Because I hesitated and hesitated buying their very cheap Campbell’s soup
that was on sale for .40 a can and I
thought their sale was over. So I went
to Walgreens that was touting theirs for
.49 a can. So I figured I did well when
I later stopped in Walgreens and the
same soup was $1.49 a can. But I was
wrong about the Can Can sale being
over, it was still going on in Shop Rite
for .40, so I bought same more. Now
our cellar pantry is beginning to look
like a “Fall Out Shelter” because being a neophyte shopper all I can see is
dollar signs when I shop, not our need
for the products.
Anyone that is a bit older can remember “Coffee Cans” They were 1-pound
cans of coffee grounds about the diameter of a saucer and about 3 inches deep.
Empty, they were great for holding nails,
screws, and paint. Every home had them
on their workbench and in kitchen drawers
holding “Stuff” But with progress the 1
Lb. Can shrank, and shrank and became
an 11.5 Oz “Pound” can. Still useful for
“Stuff” but not like the original can.
And did you know that Tropicana
Orange Juice containers that “look”
exactly like the traditional ½ gallon size
now have 59 Oz instead of 64 Oz. That’s
one less glass of juice per so-called ½
gallon. Does this mean that gallons of
milk will shrink? Will 1 Lb. Boxes of
pasta shrink to same size box but only
13 Oz’s of product?
Why would packagers of products
bother to keep nipping away at the contents of cans, containers, rolls of toilet
paper and paper towels? Because 5oz’s
of orange juice removed from each of a
million containers is a lot of juice. Is this
deceptive packaging? In my book it is.
But apparently it’s legal. So it appears
that the only way you can judge the value
of what you’re purchasing is to look at
the Price per pound, Quart, gallon, Etc.
signs and not just grab the item.
Will a dozen egg box drop to 10
eggs in the same size box? Probably
in time they will.
And one last thing that’s going to go
away is the cardboard tube from the center
of a roll of toilet tissue. According to the
advertiser all those tubes that are wasted
could build the Empire State building
many times over. So you families that
have toddlers and are going to have more
toddlers should start saving those tubes,
because when our own babies were toddlers we always showed them how they
could put them to their lips and shout
“DOO DE DOO” through them. Then
drop it into the playpen for the toddler to
imitate. One Doo De Doo could last for
hours until it was soaking wet and soggy,
and time for a new one.
When and if these new tubeless
toilet paper rolls become the standard,
all future generations of children will
have grown up never having sucked
or chewed on a Doo De Doo. Think of
what they will be missing.
Bye
