In this highly effective and informative workshop we will explore the fascial system, and how a simple foam roller used in a pain-free way can reduce both acute and chronic pain, as well as improve structural deviations and compensations. Using the innovative Relief Through Rolling Method we will look at how to address issues for the hips, shoulders, spine, and legs, enabling you to help your clients enhance and improve their Pilates practice. Valerie C. Grant, PMA®-CPT, GCFP, ACE, AFAA, RYT, NKT Level 1 Pre-Conference Workshop 2 Feldenkrais: The Neuroplasticity Connection The Feldenkrais Method provides a way to tap into the brain’s innate ability to change neural pathways in order to make movements, and in fact life, more comfortable and efficient. This workshop will give you the ability to sense subtle changes in your own organization via verbally directed awareness cues. In these progressive movement lessons, Valerie will use a combination of enjoyable micro movements and guided attention in successive approximations toward a final goal. The process will teach you to reduce unnecessary muscular effort improving the organization of your whole system. Focusing on sensory learning culminates in movements that are more flexible, and free from pain. The lessons are simple and accessible to everyone from the most accomplished athlete to those suffering from severe physical and mental handicaps. The results can be extraordinary! Join us and replace old habits with new awareness that will enhance your physical experience. 15th Annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance 4 Nora St. John, PMA®-CPT Pre-Conference Workshop 3 Orbit System by Balanced Body Super fun and super circular, the Orbit rolls into your classes or personal training sessions to enhance flexibility, stability, strength, balance and coordination through multi-planar movement. This 4-hour course includes exercises in all positions to create a full body workout for any class or client. The Orbit can be used alone or in combination with Pilates mat or apparatus exercises to add rotational movements and enhance spinal mobility. Using Balanced Body Movement Principles and the Balanced Body Track system, you will come out of the workshop with a clear vision of how to take your clients into Orbit to enhance their movement skills. Lolita San Miguel, PMA®-CPT Pre-Conference Workshop 4 The Ultimate Observation Don’t miss this unique opportunity to observe first generation teacher Lolita San Miguel working one-to-one with a “client” (volunteer delegate). Supplied with a full suite of Pilates equipment, Lolita will begin by giving a short explanation of how she works with her clients, taking into consideration their unique needs and challenges. Lolita will choose a participant to work with and conduct a lesson as if it was a private session. Delegates can observe how Lolita works, how she approaches her client, what choices she makes in exercise repertoire as well as verbal and tactile cueing. Delegates will observe the session silently, and when the session is concluded, can ask questions, and discuss Lolita’s choices and strategies with her. What better way to understand Lolita San Miguel and her work as an expression of Joseph Pilates’ legacy, than to observe her working in this context. Take notes, ask questions, discuss and absorb. This is a truly an exceptional event. (Lolita will work with a second volunteer delegate, time permitting.) 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm Pre-Conference WorkshopsAfternoon Sessions Roman Torgovitsky, PhD Pre-Conference Workshop 5 Deep Tissue Self-Bodywork: Improve Performance and Prevent Injury Massage therapy improves mobility and aids tissue recovery, thus refining and enhancing Pilates training. However, massage therapy can be expensive or inaccessible to many clients on a regular basis. soma system® is the first comprehensive method of self-bodywork modeled after professional methods of massage therapy that offers instructors the rare opportunity to provide a unique blend of Pilates training and deep tissue self-bodywork, thereby maximizing results and minimizing injury. James D’Silva Pre-Conference Workshop 6 Garuda Dhara Seated Workshop Garuda encompasses the principles of Pilates, the pranayama and asana practice of yoga, and the athleticism of dance. It is unique in its versatility, flexibility and precision of movement. We innovate, and yet hold onto the principles of older movement traditions. Holistic, organic and dynamic – Garuda is the hybrid that is revolutionizing our approach to exercise. Dhara, or Garuda Chair, is a seated workout that simplifies the more advanced repertoire of Garuda Seated and Standing Matwork. Whether you are recovering from an injury and are involved in rehabilitation work or you are just looking for a calming yet energizing holistic workout, Garuda Dhara challenges you on a physical level with abundant repertoire. Intention, attention and inquiry are brought into every breath and movement, compelling the body and brain to work with a sense of awareness. Emphasis is placed on energy work, and certain aspects of ayurvedic massage and marmara point work are brought in to this meditative practice, making Dhara a nurturing process. Yamuna Zake Pre-Conference Workshop 7 Anatomy of the Thigh & Deep Lateral Rotators Using Virtual Experiential Anatomy As instructors of a movement-based practice you know that the best way to learn anatomy is experientially - you work your muscles and feel all the connections associated with them. This workshop focuses on the anatomy of the thigh and leg, which comprises one section of Yamuna’s Virtual Experiential Anatomy program. On a large screen you’ll experience the skeletal structure coming alive. You’ll see the virtual body get into position, and you’ll watch as a muscle gets worked from origin to insertion. With these images and Yamuna as your guide, you’ll replicate this in your own body. This experiential approach can then be used for troubleshooting with clients, and for teaching classrooms of students to understand their own anatomy. Jon Zahourek Pre-Conference Workshop 8 Anatomy in Clay® Insights: Neuromuscular Patterns of the Arms & Legs Jon Zahourek introduced his unique learning system to Pilates in 1998. Immediately, leading professionals lined up for his intensive hands-on workshops, offered now at Zahourek’s Anatomy in Clay® Centers in Denver. Using multiple colors of clay, you’ll form individual muscles and nerves in three dimensions onto Zahourek’s Maniken® models. You’ll build exciting, colorful groupings of flexors and extensors in the shared pattern common to both arms and legs, with powerful insights into musculoskeletal function and pain. Build a more sophisticated understanding of muscle location, attachments, actions, and recruitment while you develop memorable 3D insights that benefit both your practice and your client. Mary Bowen, PMA®-CPT Pre-Conference Workshop 9 The Ultimate Observation Don’t miss this unique opportunity to observe first generation teacher Mary Bowen working one-to-one with a “client” (volunteer delegate). Supplied with a full suite of Pilates equipment, Mary will begin by giving a short explanation of how she works with the whole person, “Pilates plus Psyche”. Mary approaches each client in a unique manner, according to their needs and challenges. Always supportive, she teaches to the person’s hardest spot, where transformation is needed. Mary will invite a brave delegate to volunteer to share where they feel stuck. While the focus will be on the one volunteer “client”, Mary will be teaching the whole group at the same time. Delegates can observe how Mary works, how she approaches the client, what choices she during the session. Delegates will observe the session silently, and when the session is concluded, can ask questions, and discuss Mary’s choices and strategies with her. What better way to understand Mary Bowen, and her work as an expression of Joseph Pilates’ legacy, than to observe her working in this context. Take notes, ask questions, discuss and absorb. This is a truly exceptional event. (Mary will work with a second volunteer delegate, time permitting.) 15th Annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance 5 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm PMA Pilates Certification Exam 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm PMA Plaza Open 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm First Time Attendee Orientation 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm Sip & Shop! / PMA Plaza Opening Reception Sponsored by Weekend at Bernie’s Thursday, November 5, 2015 7:00 am - 5:00 pm Registration Desk Open / Schedule Changes 7:00 am - 9:00 am Breakfast in Plaza / PMA Plaza Open 7:30 am - 8:30 am MAT CLASSES - 1 1. Join us and be inspired by connection and possibility! 15th Annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance 6 11:00 am - 1:00 pm WORKSHOP SESSIONS - 1 1. Amy Taylor Alpers, PMA®-CPT Your “Second Heart” – and Possibly the Missing Link! The Pilates method is first and foremost about circulation – the “internal shower” of oxygen-rich blood required to “return to life” as Mr. Pilates intended. We are all familiar with how our heart plays an essential role in that job. However, do you know you have a “second heart” too? Often, this second heart is not used as well as it needs to be and becomes the missing link in our vital health. This second heart is the powerful contraction of your calves and feet! In this workshop we will explore how our modern life-style – especially the chair – leads to a reduction in the ability of the second heart to help with circulation. Add to that the prevalence of hyperextension of the knees, which essentially cuts the leg off at the middle, and now our calves are nearly off the circulation map entirely. We will discover the many ways in which Pilates is specifically designed to keep the calves and feet - this key part of our ultimate health mechanism strong, flexible and connected. 2. Ruth Alpert, PMA®-CPT Delineating the Eve Gentry Approach to Pilates Eve Gentry had a unique approach and philosophy on being a teacher of the Pilates method. This workshop will give an overview of the essential components and hallmarks of the Gentry approach via lecture, demonstration, and visuals. Participants will also experience the Gentry Fundamentals as applied to the Pilates Mat work. We suggest that if you register for Ruth’s workshop, you should also consider registering for Marion Kessel’s workshop, Revisiting the Power of Pilates: Eve Gentry’s Legacy, on Friday, November 6 @ 2:30pm as it complements this session. 3. Jennifer Gianni, PMA®-CPT Diastasis Rectus Abdominis: How to Retain or Regain Fascial Tensioning More than half of adult women have pelvic floor dysfunctions such as loss of bladder control, bowel pain, pubic symphysis pain and prolapse. Most dysfunctions include a diastasis rectus abdominis which is the telltale sign of fascial loosening in the core corset. Put your foundational Pilates skills and biomechanics knowledge to work to learn simple and effective strategies to prevent and heal diastasis and dysfunctions that go along with the unraveling of this connective tissue. Learn sequences for healing and advancing the DRA client. Strategies on how to best work in conjunction with doctors and physical therapist will also be discussed. 4. Colleen Glenn-Wilson, PMA®-CPT Side Kick Series - Seriously The Side Kick Series progresses powerhouse control in side lying positions. The series also tones, stretches and strengthens the legs, hips and trunk while improving structural alignment and functional control. Learn the basic series and exercise progression to the more challenging sequences along with important rhythm and tempo variances. Investigate the biomechanics of the shoulder complex and hip flexion and extension patterns with corresponding spinal mechanics. This is not just a workshop on the Side Kick Series; it is an investigation of the Pilates system through the Side Kick Series. 5. Stephanie Jennings Marketing Strategies that Work – Business Session Spreading the word about your business can be done on any budget. This session will review the most effective and affordable guerrilla and online marketing techniques that help you promote your business, generate new clients and keep them coming back again and again. 6. Elizabeth Larkam, PMA®-CPT Balance, Coordination and Fall Prevention: Integrating Vision, Vestibular Function and Proprioception in Pilates Movement coordination and standing balance is guided by the person’s neuro-myo-fascial-skeletal-vestibular system to integrate information with the visual system and proprioception. Learn about the function and dysfunction of the vestibular system and its contribution to dynamic body stability. Learn about the vestibular ocular reflex and the importance of the vestibulospinal reflex that helps to maintain and regain postural stability in movement. Experience Pilates mat exercises that emphasize vision training. Reframe Pilates mat exercises to understand and improve vestibular function. Vary Pilates Mat exercises to challenge the vestibular system. Identify and correct kinesthetic blind spots in order to improve proprioception. Each exercise will be taught and cued for clients who have difficulty with upright balance and coordination. 7. Lise Stolze, PMA®-CPT, MPT, DSc, Schroth Scoliosis Physical Therapist Scoliosis Specific Exercise: Pilates Applications In 2014 the Scoliosis Research Society recognized Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) in conjunction with bracing as a viable conservative approach for patients with scoliosis at risk for progression. The common principles of PSSE involve auto correction, elongation, and chest wall expansion with integration of the “corrected” posture into daily life activities. This presentation will examine conservative treatment principles for “at risk” adolescents and adults with scoliosis and clarify movement precautions and scope of practice as part of a comprehensive approach that includes the physician, orthotist, physical therapist specializing in PSSE, and the Pilates instructor. 8. Circuit Workshop & Workout! Back by popular demand! Join us for a mega-circuit-extravaganza! This session is part workshop and part workout, featuring Alan Herdman, PMA®CPT, teaching a group on 20 Allegro® Reformers, Kyria Sabin Waugaman, PMA®-CPT, teaching a group on 20 EXO® Chairs, and Yuuko Igarashi, PMA®-CPT, teaching a group of 20 on the Pilates Arc®. Grateful thanks to Balanced Body® for making this possible! 9. Pilates 4 Youth – Think Tank Panel Discussion Chair, Deborah Mendoza, PMA®-CPT In the spring of 2015, something extraordinary occurred. The sixth largest school district in the United States established Pilates Day as an annual event in their district’s calendar. Florida’s Broward County Public Schools celebrated on May 1 with LIVE distance learning Pilates classes streamed into 22 elementary schools where 636 children participated during the day. (continued on page 8) 15th Annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance 7 This was a new concept. How can we extend and perpetuate this, and what can we come up with next? Do you want to know how you can do this in your community? Or something different, but also impactful? This Think Tank session is a platform for delegates that want to contribute to the future direction of this initiative. How can the PMA support what matters to you? Let’s brainstorm together to co-create our next steps. 10. Installing the Pilates Therapy Model Panel Discussion Chair, Trent McEntire, PMA®-CPT Panelists: Brent Anderson, PMA®-CPT; Louise Johns, PMA®-CPT; Dawn-Marie Ickes, PMA®-CPT This group presentation with audience discussion will focus on how, while staying within your scope of practice as a Pilates teacher, you can help your community appreciate the therapeutic role of Pilates in a client’s recovery. How do we define and communicate what Pilates therapy is, and what the opportunity is for the client? Our panelists will offer a range of practical tools you can begin using right away to position your business in a therapeutic context. You can develop a distinctive niche that will continually attract and retain a loyal clientele. 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm PMA Plaza Open 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm Lunch 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm MAT CLASSES - 2 1. Grateful thanks to Balanced Body® for making this possible! 3:45 pm - 5:45pm WORKSHOP SESSIONS - 2 1. Mary Bowen, PMA®-CPT Pilates’ Primary Problem: Pilates Teachers Need Help! Consider Yourself! You may be fine in your work. Perhaps you could use a few more clients, but each person you work with is improving under your guided teaching. You love your work. You care for your clients. What could be missing? The Problem: In 40 years of teaching, I have seen with each teacher that there is one thing always lacking. Not enough time for you and your own body.m (continued on page 9) 15th Annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance 8 The Solution: A two-pronged approach: Your Body: Finding Ways to Get to YOUR body; do you need to find NEW FUN ways?; can you try CREATIVE ways?; is it just IMPOSSIBLE to find the time? Your Psyche: Is there resistance to getting to yourself?; what is preventing you?; your whole life? your family?; is it human collective history, especially for women?; is it your own typology from birth?; not understanding the parts of you that lie and influence you from your unconscious?; not knowing how to work with the “Unconscious?” 2. Kathleen McDonough, PMA®-CPT, MA, PT Modern Running Form: What Current Biomechanics Research and the Pilates Method Have in Common In this workshop, we will cover the most current research regarding best running practices and how that relates to how you teach Pilates to your clients who run. We will review factors that contribute to running injuries, and the science that examines those injuries, and then outline best running practices. We will then go over how those practices relate to Pilates exercises. 3. Hayley Healey, PMA®-CPT Client Brain Color; the Art of Client Success through Psychological Understanding – Business Session Journey down a fun, engaging and diverse path into the depths of how your clients think, feel, behave and learn. By becoming familiar with different brain strengths, positive and negative behavior traits, and tendencies when faced with stressful, and/or conflicting situations, we will determine your clients’ ‘brain color schematic.’ In this workshop, you will learn a cohesive communication approach along with action tools to better guide and direct your existing and future clients’ connection, consistency, and long-term committed success. By understanding your own ‘brain color’ as well as your clients, you will be able to create clients for life! 4. Deborah Lessen, PMA®-CPT Teaching Technique: A Rubric For Teaching Movement The teacher’s skill in engaging the client in their own process has a direct relationship with the client’s perceived benefits from Pilates exercise. What is your rubric for successful teaching? How do you lead your clients toward self-sufficiency? The goal of this workshop is to stimulate and challenge teachers to mature in their work. How do you grow within your own scope of practice? 5. Andrea Maida, PMA®-CPT On the Order of the Pilates Mat Exercises Joseph Pilates tells us “Study carefully. There IS a reason!” We will explore Joe’s original 34 mat exercises and examine the reasons behind his brilliantly prescribed order of the exercises. Find the skills necessary in each exercise to prepare you for the exercises to come. Each exercise builds upon the previous ones to prepare you for success. We’ll take a look at several examples of exercise progressions throughout the entire series. Come prepared to work out - get the exercises into your body and experience the shapes of the exercises in a cohesive way to better serve your clients. 6. Allan Menezes, PMA®-CPT, MSc. All about the Core All About the Core will provide delegates with a more effective way to utilize the core muscles by ‘priming’ them prior to engaging them for your Pilates routines. We will review - what prevents the core from working effectively; why ‘navel to spine’ is ineffective; why the plank can be bad for your back; why your lateral core is so much more important than your six-pack; and how your breathing affects the core. You’ll be surprised by what you will learn in this workshop! 7. Jennifer Stacey, PMA®-CPT, MS Pilates from the Wings: The Power of the “Serape” and Scapular Muscles Through the Alignment of the Arm and Hand Discover the secret to moving from your wings (serape) and center. Effectively use the two “centers” to enhance performance, prevent and address injuries, back and neck problems. To recruit the trunk center you have to recruit the wings. To recruit the wings you need a properly aligned arm. Learn to align your arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand and fingers to connect to the armpit, wings and center while performing Pilates. Learn proper hand placement on the Pilates mat, pedal, handles and straps to promote efficient movement, enhance performance, and place less stress upon the back, neck, shoulders and wrists. 8. Megyn Taback, PMA®-CPT Getting Pilates into Schools – Creating an Irresistible Curriculum Proposal This workshop is designed to teach you how to get yourself and your Pilates curriculum into a public school. The workshop will review how to create a compelling curriculum proposal, including essential factors such as understanding the concerns of the school principal. Make it as easy as possible for them to say “Yes!”. We will explore curriculum content, such as teaching materials, sample lesson/unit planners, games, assessments, and activities for children. Come and learn how to get involved in bringing Pilates to kids through your local school system! 9. Circuit Workshop & Workout! Back by popular demand! Join us for a mega-circuit-extravaganza! In collaboration with participating Pilates schools, we investigate how to organize and describe the essential components of comprehensive Pilates teacher training. In other words, we work on creating consensus on educational standards. This is industry building! If you have a Pilates school or are thinking about starting one then this is the session you won’t want to miss. We will discuss curriculum development, licensure, accreditation, what the Registry of Schools is all about and the PMA’s move toward a school approval process. Plan to join your Summit Development Committee members, and be prepared to listen, question and debate! 5:30 pm - 6:30 p.m. PMA Plaza Open / Cash Bar 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm Evening Function (TBC) Friday, November 6, 2015 7:00 am – 5:00 pm Registration Desk Open / Schedule Changes 7:00 am - 8:45 am Breakfast in Plaza / PMA Plaza Open 7:30 am - 8:30 am MAT CLASSES - 3 1. Grateful thanks to Balanced Body® for making this possible! 8:45 am - 10:45 am WORKSHOP SESSIONS - 3 1. Shari Berkowitz, PMA®-CPT Rotated and Twisted Pelvises: It’s Simpler Than You Think! Whether it’s from scoliosis or just life, everyone has rotations of the pelvis. These rotations lead to compensatory imbalances. Strong here, weak there. . .it’s no joke. However, it is far easier to manage and rebalance than most think. The world has told you it is complicated. I am here to tell you that its not. I will teach you what you need to do and why. You will truly understand why pelvises rotate, learn a complete protocol of how to address these rotations in Pilates, and develop homework to give your clients so they can continue the process between sessions. 2. Montse Cosin, PMA®-CPT, PhD Pilates for Cyclists In the last few years, the number of people practicing cycling has grown considerably, both outdoor - recreational, cyclotourism, mountain bike, road - and indoor, mainly spinning. It is a fun sport, which remarkably improves our cardiorespiratory fitness, and has very few injuries. However, the repetitive nature of the cycle stroke gesture and the incorrect body alignment can cause discomfort at muscular and or joint levels. In this workshop, we will review how to use Pilates to improve muscular power and correct body alignment. We will highlight specific Pilates exercises that will strengthen and stretch muscles as well as prevent neck, spine, knee, lower back and arm injuries. 3. Juan Estrada, PMA®-CPT Real Men Do Pilates Pilates was invented by a man, and made for men! The misconception is that Pilates is for dancers and a workout for women. This workshop (useful for all teachers!) focuses on working with male clients who suffer from imbalances/tightness in the shoulder and hip area, and how to achieve strength when male clients are hyper-mobile. 4. Dawn-Marie Ickes, PMA®-CPT, MPT Pelvic Floor Precision in Cueing This workshop will explore the various ways to cue and identify proper recruitment of the pelvic floor for optimal execution of Pilates exercises. Techniques for pelvic floor recruitment, differentiation and timing will be reviewed as they relate to traditional Pilates exercises on the mat, trapeze table and reformer. 5. Joy Karley, PMA®-CPT, MA Mastering the Multilevel In an ideal world, all classes would be perfectly matched with students of the same level. In the real world, most of us face multi-level classes on a daily basis. Sometimes one size does not fit all. This session will teach strategies for dealing with multi-level classes, as well as mat and reformer sequences that work well in a multi-level group. You will walk away with material you can use on Monday! 6. Lesley Logan, PMA®-CPT Never a Dull Moment: Client scheduling techniques to keep your schedule consistent – Business Session “The holidays are very slow.” “Summer is slow for me.” Do those phrases sound familiar? What if they didn’t have to? What if you could actually keep your schedule and/or your studio’s schedule full and consistent? This workshop will go over how to train your client to be consistent, train your clients on how to schedule their life around Pilates. We’ll touch base on client conversion, your schedule and keeping things rockin’ in your studio! Imagine not being able to tell where in the calendar year you are in based on how busy the studio is? 7. Cara Reeser, PMA®-CPT Pilates Protocols for Stronger Neck and Freer Shoulders A strong and supple spine must include our necks! Adequate neck strength and alignment helps to facilitate freedom and ease for our shoulders. In this course we will learn about exercises, images and cues to help our clients build neck strength and control in all rages of motion. We will look to see how popular cueing and over correction of our shoulder complex often thwarts our ability to use our necks well, resulting in restricted range of motion for the rest of our spine. Basic anatomy of the neck and shoulder complex will be reviewed. Smart and effective Pilates movement protocols will be explored. 8. Circuit Workshop & Workout! Back by popular demand! Join us for a mega-circuit-extravaganza! Heroes in Motion – Think Tank Panel Discussion Chair, Trent McEntire, PMA®-CPT In 2012, the PMA established the Heroes in Motion® initiative, in order to bring attention to the power of Pilates as a therapeutic modality for those with severe movement impediments. Since that time projects around the world have been undertaken by Pilates teachers who see a special opportunity to contribute to the health and function of clients facing extraordinary challenges. This Think Tank session is a platform for delegates that want to contribute to the future direction of this initiative. How can the PMA support what matters to you? Let’s brainstorm together to co-create our next steps. 15th Annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance 11 11:00 am - 12:00 pm Growth Opportunities for the Pilates Profession General Assembly Chair, Shawn Healey, PMA®-CPT Panelists: Jo Ann Graser, PMA®-CPT; Trent McEntire, PMA®-CPT; Emily Mokwunye, PMA®-CPT Pilates is our life work, our inspiration, our pride and joy. And yet, we face serious challenges. What’s happening to us, as Pilates teachers and business owners, on a daily basis? Where is the pain point? Let’s take a look. Statistics tell us that Pilates participation in the health club environment is on the wane. What does that mean in context? And what does this indicate regarding where the future opportunities lie for the comprehensively trained career Pilates teacher? With the aging of the Baby Boomers, doctors dropping their insurance contracts, and the need to deliver quality of care to our clients – how do we position ourselves to have viable and sustainable careers over the long term? We believe it’s not only possible, but that the answers are right in front of us. Let’s be the ones to drive this conversation! Join us for a provocative and practical discussion, with audience Q & A. 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm Lunch 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm PMA Plaza Open 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm WORKSHOP SESSIONS - 4 1. Kathy Corey, PMA®-CPT Focus on Breathing Medical research shows that as we age our lung capacity decreases. We use less surface area of the lungs and they begin to shut down. The small muscles that connect the ribs become weak and they lose the ability to work optimally. We then begin to breathe using only the upper portion of our lungs. This shallow breathing diminishes oxygen delivery and CO2 elimination to and from all our organs. In contrast, deep core breathing increases oxygenation and provides the proper energy supply to all our cells. It removes toxins and brings oxygen to all of our organs including our most important organ, the brain, which receives one third of the blood flow in the body. 2. Benjamin Degenhardt, PMA®-CPT The Universal Reformer To “reform” means to improve by alteration, correction of error, or removal of defects; to change, refine, and restructure. When Joseph Pilates created his work, he was on the humble mission to reform the world, one body at a time. His Universal Reformer was designed as a corrective tool that teaches the quality of movement required to master the practice of his work. Exploring the history and purpose of the apparatus as well as the traditional exercises, this workshop is designed to highlight the dialogue our bodies enter with the apparatus the second we place our toes on the foot bar. 3. Kim Gibilisco, PMA®-CPT, MFA, MA Hip Me With Your Best Shot To date, there are no bona fide guidelines for the pre and postrehabilitation of hip arthroscopies. However, both physical therapists and Pilates teachers frequently encounter pre and post hip arthroscopy patients/clients. Successful outcomes incorporate identifying adequate ranges of motion with optimal alignment and efficient neuromuscular recruitment strategies in a pain-free environment. Utilizing Pilates mat and/or equipment exercises, participants of this workshop will 15th Annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance 12 understand the rationale and breakdown of the Pilates fundamentals for a unique application and integration into the training process. Lecture, review of evidence for surgical and non-surgical care, instruction/demonstration are designed to enhance the participants’ understanding of the various challenges encountered when treating this population and offer viable solutions to an ever growing population. 4. Marion Kessel, PMA®-CPT & Michele Larsson, PMA®-CPT (Film) Revisiting the Power of Pilates: Eve Gentry’s Legacy This workshop will revisit the vibrant and vital ways in which Eve Gentry strengthened Joseph Pilates’ core principles. Following a screening of the 2007 documentary ‘Eve Gentry: The Power of Pilates’, Marion Kessel and Michele Larsson will provide initial recollections and reflections regarding key aspects of Eve’s work. Comments by, among others, PMA Certified Pilates Teachers, Ruth Alpert, Kevin Bowen, and Debora Kolwey, will serve as a bridge to Q&A with the audience. We suggest that if you register for Marion’s workshop, you should also consider registering for Ruth Alpert’s workshop, Delineating the Eve Gentry Approach to Pilates, on Thursday, Nov. 5 @ 11am as it complements this session. 5. Cassie Piasecki, PMA®-CPT Insider’s Guide to Social Media for Pilates Studios and Instructors – Business Session Using social media is the best way to attract new clients and strengthen the bond with your existing ones. Whether you are a studio owner or an instructor, this workshop will give you information, tools, and ideas to set up and strategically manage your social media accounts. You will leave with a fresh perspective on how to use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to build your business. 6. Lolita San Miguel, PMA®-CPT History of the Pilates Method I was present when a client said to Joe with compassion and curiosity, “What a shame you had to spend four years in an internment camp,” referring to the Isle of Man, to which he replied with surprise, “Oh, no! Those were great years. I had the time and the patients available to me to develop my method.” In this portion of my workshop, I will share many anecdotes, and the essence of Joe, Clara and the Elders as I have lived them. No, I don’t start Mat with The Hundred! Why don’t I start a class with The Hundred? I was taught to start with The Hundred by raising the legs two inches from the floor in the supine position followed by the shoulders, neck, head, arms and breathing pattern of five - a very challenging move for anyone, which can lead to “pooching abs,” arching spine, raising shoulders, and neck tension. Seeing this often convinced me of the need for Pre-Pilates exercises before The Hundred. We will also do my PostPilates standing work to give closure to the class, reaffirming the perfect Pilates Posture. Don’t be concerned though – we will include The Hundred and many other moves from our Pilates mat treasure chest. 7. Hadar Schwartz, PMA®-CPT, BPT Diaphragm Function as a Key for Rehabilitation with Pilates Did you know that your clients’ diaphragm function can become a key to healthy and efficient movement? Are you worried about intra-abdominal pressure during Pilates classes? Intra-abdominal pressure is a natural result of coordinated diaphragmatic breathing and can contribute to spine stability, increased strength and elongation. Sometimes the traditional Pilates breathing and abdominal activation prevent our clients from taking full advantage of this physiological pattern. This workshop will provide an in-depth view of the diaphragm, abdominals and pelvic floor coordination based on anatomy and biomechanics. Participants will receive an updated review on the role of breathing in rehabilitation, and analyze a fascinating case study where the rehabilitation process was mostly based on modified breathing patterns. 8. Nora St John, PMA®-CPT, MS Optimizing Spinal Mobility in the Pilates Studio The Pilates studio is a wonderful place to understand and optimize spinal mobility in clients of all kinds from the very stiff to the hypermobile. Following a review of spinal anatomy and a delineation of common mobility imbalances, key exercises on each of the pieces of Pilates studio equipment will be explored to help students see, feel and properly train spinal mobility. 9. James D’Silva 9:30 am - 11:30 am WORKSHOP SESSIONS - 5 1. Brett Howard, PMA®-CPT Mastering Control in Pilates Joseph Pilates referred to his method as the Art of Control. “Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit” Joseph Pilates (1945). In this workshop, tools are given to foster ways of attaining greater consistent control in Pilates. Participants learn various approaches to scaffolding and deconstructing the Pilates exercises, as well as how to recognize the skills involved in the exercises, and how to strengthen those skills. 2. Valerie Grant, PMA®-CPT, GCFP, ACE, AFAA, RYT, NKT Level 1 HEY! I’ve fallen and I CAN get up Learn how neuroplasticity and the Feldenkrais Method can enable our Pilates clients to move more smoothly getting down on the floor and up again. These very specific movements can enable an entire population who once thought mat classes were out of their realm to not only move efficiently between the floor and standing, but easily, and without pain or any external assistance. 3. Desiree Sanchez, PMA®-CPT Leveling: How & Why Do you have clients who come to you believing they are at a different skill level than you observe them to be? Are you consistently challenging your clients enough? Too much? With the broad range of options available in Pilates, it is easy to find ourselves a bit muddled over the right level of work to teach some of our clients. How can we build in the skills we are seeking without losing our clients to boredom or compromising our own standards? How can we provide challenge at each level? How can we effectively progress all of our clients (even those with ‘complex history’) to the highest levels of movement possible? Join us for this clarifying look at leveling - how and why. Regardless of your Pilates lineage or training background, this workshop will provide clear, easy to follow movement-skill based guidelines and give you tangible ways to assess proficiency and increase the efficacy of your teaching. 15th Annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance 14 4. Risa Sheppard, PMA®-CPT The Art of Pilates and the Early Years of Ron Fletcher This workshop takes a look back at the life and work of Ron Fletcher as I knew him in the early years of the Beverly Hills Body Contrology studio. We will discuss the history, lineage and legacy of the method I learned over 35 years ago and take a comparative look at the changes in pedagogy and practice over time (past, present and future). We will give considerable focus to Pilates as an art form, and rediscover the passion for the work that Ron inspired in me so many years ago. 5. Karyn Staples, PMA®-CPT, PT, PhD, OCS Staying Aligned - Hip Congruency This interactive workshop is designed for the participant to get a deeper perspective on the hip joint anatomy and biomechanics. We will explore how hip congruency applies to different positions in the Pilates environment (mat and reformer exercises). 6. GENERAL CONFERENCE CONCLUDES 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm POST CON WORKSHOP Irene Dowd & Steven Fetherhuff, PMA®-CPT Expanding Horizons with Spine Extension A balance of joint motion and muscle activity has a beneficial effect on our musculoskeletal system and particularly on our spine/trunk. Spinal flexion is prevalent in daily life and in many Pilates protocols; therefore, we will focus on spine extension, as it is challenging to many and often forgotten by some of us, especially when using an electronic device, driving a car, cooking, working with a client, performing core exercises, and all manner of other daily activities. In this workshop, we will explore the opportunities that the Pilates system offers us to enhance spinal extension and other spinal motions that expand our movement potential in daily life. We will also introduce additional protocols that can be practiced while sitting, standing or lying on a mat/floor that can prepare us for more challenging and versatile spine/trunk usage. We will practice changing our relationship with gravity and equipment in order to maximize a comprehensive and balanced exertion of all the muscles of our trunk. Mindfulness regarding fitness levels, age and spinal conditions will guide our suggestions regarding the creation of personalized programs and the progression of those programs over time. 7. Jolita Trahan, PMA®-CPT Do You See What I See? Dysfunction along the Lateral Line, as described in the Anatomy Trains approach, can influence movement patterns in both the sagittal and frontal planes. Applying the principles she has acquired during her studies of Body Reading with Tom Myers, Jolita will guide participants through an evaluation procedure to determine possible muscle dysfunctions along this specific myofascial line and provide them with a Pilates movement program to address eccentric loading and concentric recoil. 8. What is Your Path to Success? Panel Discussion Chair: Darya Bronston, PMA®-CPT Panelists: Kristi Cooper, PMA®-CPT, Rael Isacowitz, PMA®-CPT, Deborah Lessen, PMA®-CPT, Trent McEntire, PMA®-CPT, Lolita San Miguel, PMA®-CPT There is a very real difference between what we are told success is, and how people actually experience feeling successful in their lives. How do we consciously craft our own individual definition of success, and how do we manage this in community when we meet other people’s definitions of success? The panel and audience will discuss finding the meaning in success as well as some of the approaches they have used to define and create success in their own personal and business lives. The panel is particularly interested in how we can contribute successful personal practices to the Pilates community, as well as some of the ways the practice of Pilates has added to the triumphs experienced in their own lives. 15th Annual Meeting of the Pilates Method Alliance 15 2015 PRESENTERS Amy Taylor Alpers, PMA®-CPT has been a leading educator in Pilates teacher training for over 20 years. No. However, staying on site does greatly enhance your experience. You will not have to worry about commuting to the conference and you will have more time to connect with other attendees. The PMA realizes many delegates have relationships and discounts with other hotels and that you have a choice where you stay. But when delegates stay “off-property” it impacts our room block and financial commitment. If we do not meet our room block, the PMA incurs financial penalties. Delegates who stay “on-property” help us to continue to provide a valuable, cost-effective event.
