Having to use sun protection in the third week of January is this for real? Talking to family and friends in the UK is sometimes fun because you always know the reaction that is coming when you are about to tell them how gorgeous the weather is. I often try to avoid it as I know that it has been raining there and it’s cold so who needs me calling and rubbing salt into the wound, But yesterday taking to my mum I couldn’t help myself as it was just too nice not to mention. I hadn’t planned to go out but by lunch time I had taken myself off to the beach for a little people watching and enjoyment. Sun loving Brits even some Spaniards in summer wear, had a perfect Sunday afternoon simply lapping it up, so how great was that to see here in January and I might just add without going on the forecast for February it is looking extremely good with only 7 days in total of clouds the other 21 days are looking sunny and warm. I have seen many Brits out and about this week and speaking to business owners I am told that business in general has been so far a much busier in January than in 2013 so let’s hope the good start to 2014 will set the trend for the months to come. With only two weeks and a bit before Valentine’s day we have included some menus on pages 6 & 7 or if you really want to go for it we have a limousine service available just give us a call to check availability call us on 673 652 340 If you are a sports loving person then with only days to go before the SIX NATIONS Rugby starts, we have a great opening line up on Saturday with two games that include Wales v Italy and France v England and then on Sunday Ireland v Scotland so this weekend should see many fans out in the bars enjoying both the rugby and the live football. So please enjoy your week, more sunshine (fingers crossed) and don’t forget to help our readers find out more about what’s going on and any events in your calendar. Your opinion really matters to the research team, each questionnaire has been designed to not only gauge your views on popular lifestyle and consumer topics, but also invites you to tell them about your experiences on life abroad. The programme is led by the ex-head of research from BBC World, the specialist research team is independent and has received responses from more than 100 countries so far. “We have been thrilled with the response from expatriates from all walks of life around the globe who have shared their stories with us. It has been a truly engaging experience for the team and has provided us with unique insight enabling us to establish a very in-depth understanding of those residing in a foreign country” said Emma Wood, Project Director. Emerging highlights show a broad spectrum of online shopping behaviour. 69% of expats have purchased multiple travel tickets via the internet in the last 6 months, versus just 12% on groceries and essentials; as they opt to shop locally to engage in their adopted communities and eat native produce when not on the move. January Analysis of spending habits has revealed some fast growing online trends when it comes to expatriates making purchases from .com stores outside their country of residence. 55% bought books, CDs and DVDs online in the second half of last year. 78% spent up to £100 on shoes, with 66% treating themselves to clothes up to £100 every month. Almost 70% of respondents have made it clear that delivery charges are an important consideration when shopping online, with 42% making arrangements with friends and family to take goods out to them on their next visit. Amazingly and despite the growing volume and nature of currency exchange specialists 72% still transfer their money via their bank. The Expat Survey does not share any personal information with third parties and has no links with Governments. To participate in the programme please visit www.theexpatsurvey.com as soon as possible. Students who live less than three kilometres away from their schools will not be able to continue using bus passes, but as the distance is measure by the radius, pupils are facing five or six kilometre walks to and from school. With an increase of pupils unable to take the bus parents would opt to drive creating traffic chaos with many parents and families claiming the kids have no choice but to walk due to money. It will be a big concern for many parents with increased traffic, there is always an increased risk and the children’s safety is always number one, to prove a point parents took it upon themselves to boycott the bus which proved that huge tailbacks resulting in students being late taking over an hour to reach their schools. Since January 7th there has been a new community police patrol in Benidorm, they patrol three specific areas in Benidorm, The Old Town, The Avd Mediterraneo and Rincon de Loix, they currently patrol in two shifts for the winter period morning and evening and depending on the needs of the Summer Season an extra shift will be added to a day, evening and night time shift. The new community police service consists of 10 officers from the local police, two officers will also coordinate with the local police that patrol the beach areas as well as the rural patrols operating in the estates and orchard areas ensuring good communications between the teams. Last year you could hardly see any local police walking the streets but you would catch the odd few on Segways, The mayor of Benidorm, Agustín Navarro, the first deputy mayor, Gema Amor, the Councillor for Public Safety, José Vicente Marcel and several officers of the Local Police in Benidorm went out to introduce and publicize the new service to residents and local businesses, they also presented cards with a phone number to use incase of any problems establishing a relationship with the community and a direct contact without having to go via the switchboard. So if you want to date a Snake, just know you'll always be full. Horse (1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002): The Planner A horse is most likely to plan out every single detail of his or her life, including their dating life. Horses like to plan ahead, make reservations and never likely to just go with the flow of things. For the sake of love, it's always good to get a second opinion especially with Valentine’s Day approaching. So if you've already done the research on your horoscope for 2014, it may be time to look at the Chinese zodiac as well. January 31 marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year, so if finding love was on top of your resolution list, we think it's only fair to start fresh (again). But if you're already in a relationship, it could also be a good idea to get to know what the future holds for you and your partner for the year ahead. And of course, take all of this with a pinch of salt -all relationships should be based on trust and communication, horoscopes merely give us an idea of the alternatives. So to get an insight into how each sign operates during alone time, Match.com has put together a survey of dating behaviours. Are you surprised with your own sign? Let us know in the comments below. Rat (1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008): The Long-Distance Dater Dating a rat? He or she isn't afraid of the distance. More than half (53%) of singles born in the year of the rat say that they would have a long distance relationship, while 15% are willing to travel over eight hours by plane to see their partners. Now that's commitment. Ox (1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009): The Eternal Optimist Want to date someone positive? Seek out an ox. Most singles (88%) born in the year of the ox are selfproclaimed optimists. People born this year are more likely to date a variety of people - whether they are tall, short, rich or broke. Tiger (1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010): The Rash Actor Tigers are fun, impulsive and adventurous. 51% of surveyed tigers said they were spontaneous when it came to dating. So if your second date takes place at the end of a bungee cord, don't say we didn't warn you. Rabbit (1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011): Living Life To The Fullest If you're dating a rabbit, get ready for something fancy. Rabbits are the most willing to spend big bucks, with 43% spending at least 40 Euro per date. But in the spirit of living life to the fullest , they are also more likely to have one night stands and send sexts. Dragon (1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012): The Aloof Lover Dragons don't like to cuddle. Period. Dragon singles were more likely to opt out of getting cosy and snuggly during dates. So if you're looking for someone to curl up under a blanket with in front of the TV, look somewhere else. Snake (1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013): The Foodie Dating a snake? Specsavers Opticas collects nearly 4,500 pairs of glasses for charity and helps the world to see On 10th October Specsavers Opticas launched a campaign to collect 3,000 pairs of unwanted glasses in just three months to be given to the Lions Club International and distributed to those in need. This campaign strove to give the gift of sight to some of the world’s poorest people and the response has been fantastic. 4,436 pairs of glasses have been donated 10 over the three month campaign across all eight stores, well over the target! José Ángel Moral-Tajadura, Specsavers Opticas’ Business Development Manager commented “We would like to say a huge thank you to all the generous people, the media and local organizations who have helped support the campaign and donated their unwanted glasses. Every pair will make a huge difference to someone’s life.” The glasses donated during the campaign will be sent to the Lions Club’s recycling plant in Alicante where they are first separated into single vision, bifocals, varifocals and sunglasses. They are then graded according to prescription strength, cleaned and boxed for distribution. Lions Club representatives are located across many developing countries including Africa and India. They test the eyes of locals and send requests for the required prescription glasses onto the fulfilment plant. Lions Club International collects around 70,000 pairs of glasses to be re-dispensed every year, with each one being donated and hand selected for specific people in need. Janette Bennett, president of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club commented: ‘There is always a shortage of glasses in developing countries as they have no medical support, so Specsavers’ donations are absolutely vital to people with poor vision. It’s amazing that they have been able to collect over 4,000 pairs in just 3 months, it will help so many people to lead a fuller life and we are really grateful to the company and the community for donating their glasses to this great cause.’ Specsavers Opticas will continue to have a strong relationship with the Lions Club and glasses can be donated at any of their eight stores on the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Mallorca. Your weekly Horoscope ARIES Apply yourself to taking judicious action instead of trying to get a million things done at once on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday - otherwise you’ll end up feeling frenzies and getting very little accomplished. By Thursday and Friday, you’ll discover a groove that feels comfortable, productive and energizing to you. The more you listen to your intuition, the more you’ll be able to do. Over the weekend, social obligations crowd your daily planner. Pick and choose. Attend only those activities that really get you excited. CANCER A tactic that will make your life easier is to take nothing personally, especially during the first half of this week. One day everyone may be singing your praises, while another the world at large is indifferent, but none of that has any real bearing on who you are as a person. The second half of the week is about looking at the details in your relationships. Overall, things are working very well, but there might be a small matter here and there that requires fine-tuning. Socialize over the weekend. You love to have fun, especially with family. LIBRA TAURUS Make an effort to see the issue from the other person’s point of view on Monday. Sure, you may not understand the emotions he or she is having, but it’s important that you acknowledge the validity of them. Tuesday and Wednesday are all about finding creative solutions, hopefully before a situation becomes a problem. Be kind and do a few good deeds from behind the scenes on Thursday and Friday. Anything community-oriented (recycling, charity drives, composting) is a good idea. Strike a balance between disseminating information and sharing silence. What’s more frightening than a dream that doesn’t come true? One that does. During the first half of the week, you start to see some very big payoffs from all your recent efforts, and that can feel overwhelming. Take a deep breath and slow down. If necessary, use Thursday and Friday to attend only to small, daily tasks and put the bigger issues on the back burner. Use the weekend to talk to people who have gone on this same path before you. They’ll have great advice on how to handle your much-deserved ‘overnight’ success. You’re in a ruminative mood at week’s start, thinking about the relationships you have in your life. On Wednesday, if you find yourself thinking about friendships, loves and family members who have come and gone, give them (and yourself) a break by reserving judgment and realizing that there are always multiple versions of the truth. Being so adult about matters of the heart makes you feel more like yourself on Thursday and Friday, and that is something to be celebrated. Fortunately, the weekend offers plenty of opportunities to do just that. Gather your favorite companions together. LEO SCORPIO On Monday you realize that there’s a big difference between taking action and reacting. The former is calm and cares about doing the right thing, no matter how it looks. The latter has qualities of over-compensation and worries about how other people will react. You have the courage of your convictions by midweek, thanks to this epiphany, and you do what’s best for all parties involved. By Friday, you see miraculous results - listening to your intuition and following it is scary, but it pays off in numerous ways. Use the weekend for doing what you do best: talking, laughing and enjoying life. A great scientist once wrote, ‘Nothing is too wonderful to be true.’ Adopt that as your motto. If you can’t see the truth of it on Monday, you will by Wednesday at the latest. True, that realization may be one you have to fight for, but once you commit yourself to it, you’ll see that it’s right on. Thursday and Friday are all about consolidating your gains, from the smallest details to the biggest overview of the big picture. Use the weekend for socializing. While you’re a stalwart soul who thrives in solitude, you also need to bask in the love of your family and friends. One of the most common (and consistently false) assumptions people make is that everyone else has it together. The first half of the week, make a conscious effort to break out of that mindset. Seeing yourself and your fellow human beings with compassion helps with that task. Thursday and Friday are good times to make an art form out of commonly tossed-off things: How well can you craft that memo? Could you possibly have perfected the art of efficient recycling? The weekend is leisurely and filled with friends - how lovely! It’s time to take action on your own behalf on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. That means no more procrastinating - read a book or play with the dog instead of zoning out in front of the TV, and eat well instead of eating to feel full. Taking proper care of yourself can be a brave, if not revolutionary, act. The last two days of the week are a good time to see how you can juggle your schedule so you have more time for nourishment on all levels: mental, spiritual, emotional and physical. Get used to seeking balance, finding it, losing it and then finding it again over the weekend. CAPRICORN GEMINI It’s important to say thank you - not just to others out of courtesy, although that’s always nice, but to yourself and the universe at large for all the loveliness, large and small, that you encounter every day. Use the first part of the week to be consciously grateful for things like a particularly speedy commute, the joke your grandmother tells you and the fact that your dry cleaner found your watch in your pants pocket. The last part of the week is a good time to get domestic. The more you feel grounded, the better off you are. Seeking balance is your task over the weekend. AQUARIUS VIRGO SAGITTARIUS Be creative about what you consider to be positive events during the first half of the week. Sure, winning the lottery might be nice, but getting a seat on the bus, a great cup of tea and a long conversation with an old friend actually have a lot more impact on your day-to-day life. In other words, being grateful for items that might be considered trivial actually increases your capacity for happiness. The more you practice this, the more you’ll see its joyous ripple effects, especially during the last half of the week and over the weekend. PISCES On Monday, something you’ve been denying about yourself comes to you in the form of fate. Make an attempt to get the cosmic joke on Tuesday, and by Wednesday you’ll see that this is a grand opportunity, just wearing a slightly bizarre costume. Thursday and Friday are excellent times to take solid action. They don’t have to be big actions, but they do have to fall under the category of useful and constructive. Use the weekend to enjoy all the relationships in your life, from the long and deep to the light and superficial. €uro-Millions Fri 24 Jan 2014 5 - 19 - 34 - 35 - 41 Lucky Stars: 1 - 5 Next Estimated Jackpot: €51,853,731 POWER SUDOKU CROSSWORD 26 Across 1 Officially approved (6-7) 8 Highest point (of something) (4) 9 Historic European region, now divided between Belgium, the Netherlands and France (8) 10 Four-sided courtyard (10) 12 Send for (6) 14 Substance with pH of over 7 (6) 15 English Novelist — seen a junta (anag) (4,6) 19 English novelist — lean crew (anag) (8) 20 Substance with pH of less than 7 (4) 21 Wonder child (6,7) Down 2 Insincerely charming (8) 3 Dosh — a bloomer, perhaps? Championship tuning in to see Wales clinch the crown by beating England. Several individual competitions take place under the umbrella of the Six Nations tournament. The oldest is the Calcutta Cup, which has been running since 1879 and is contested annually between England and Scotland. The Millennium Trophy has been awarded to the winner of the game between England and Ireland with the first presented in 1989, and in the same year, the Centenary Quaich was contested between Ireland and Scotland for the first time. Since 2007, France and Italy have also contested for their own silverware - the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy. It was created to honour the 200th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who helped unify Italy and was also a French military general. A special preview programme, Inside 6 Nations, will be broadcast before each weekend of the tournament on the BBC News Channel. Good Week Juan more chance Juan Mata has another chance to lift his club career after not playing enough in the last six months at Chelsea. Mata has been Chelsea’s player of the year for the past two seasons but that was still not enough for him to be a key part of Mourinho´s plans. With the World Cup approaching this move was extremely important for the Spaniard; he is believed to make his Debut against Cardiff tonight. Didyou know? • The idea of a Trophy for the Six Nations Championship was first thought of by the Earl of Westmorland, and was first presented in 1993 to France (the winners that season). It is held in trust by the Six Nations Championship Trophy Trust. • There are fifteen sides to the Trophy, representing each player, and three handles representing each official i.e the referee and two touch judges. Around the wooden base of the Trophy is the emblem of each of the six national unions. • The capacity of the Trophy is exactly five bottles of champagne, one for each of the original Five Nations, and the trophy has a lip at the rim, designed so that it is easy to drink from.
