the costa blanca
The Costa Blanca is at the heart of Spain’s Mediterranean
coast. It has a little bit of everything for everyone and some
of the most beautiful beaches, valleys of citrus groves and
palm covered plains. The name “Costa Blanca means” ‘White
Coast’ and offers 170 miles of beaches, clean blue waters,
tranquil countryside, vineyards and serene Spanish villages.
Alicante is the provincial capital of the Costa Blanca,
although its most famous resort, Benidorm is the name that
is synonymous when talking about the Costa Blanca.
Nestled along the coastline you will find many whitewashed,
tranquil towns, waiting to be discovered. But if you should
happen to stumble upon one of the pretty, scenic villages,
remember to keep it a secret.

Nestled between the capes of San Antonio and Cabo de La Nao, Javea or Xabia, is in the northern region of the
Costa Blanca. Protected from the continental winds by the magnificent Montgo mountain barrier, Javea has a mild
year round climate, making it ideal whenever you visit.
With its variety of landscapes, ranging from sandy coastlines to rugged mountains, Javea is definitely the setting
for a great holiday.
Not only is Javea rich in natural beauty, it also has deep historic roots. The inhabitants have ranged from ancient
cavemen, Iberians and Romans to Greeks, Moors and Christians.
The town comes to life in the hot summer months with fiestas and markets and with a large influx of international
guests. Javea evolves into a buzzing tourist resort during this time.
It is always possible to escape the madding crowd and seek serenity in any of the quiet coves along the coastline
or immerse yourself in the Spanish culture that still exists .
There are three main areas of Javea, the Port, Arenal (the main beach area) and the Old Town.
calpe
With the towering rock of Ifach, calm pristine beaches, coastal cliff views and hidden inland valleys and ravines,
Calpe will definitely surprise you.
The town is full of history and culture and its location has attracted many settlers throughout history.
Calpe entered a period of redevelopment during the 18th century, consolidating the town in the 19th century and
laying foundations for its current prosperity.
It is now a major attraction for both national and international tourism.
Take a stroll around the ancient town, wander past the port, watch the boats arrive with their daily catch or just
sit back and relax on one of the sprawling blue flag beaches.
moraira
Moraira is a small picturesque town nestled between the hills and vineyards of the Costa Blanca at the edge
of the Mediterranean Sea, enjoying ample sunshine and a year round ambient temperature.
The typically Spanish taverns, coffee bars and restaurants are intertwined with several more modern eating
establishments, including ice cream parlours and a good selection of international foods. Banks and speciality
shops sit side by side with designer clothing, Spanish leather and well stocked general supply stores…..all
just a moment’s walk from the sea and the daily fish auction which is open to the public.
A beautiful Marina is home to many wonderful boats that sit in the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean.
Moraira itself, is a restful place for those wishing to spend time in the sun. The weekly market arrives every
Friday morning, when the town suddenly bustles to the sound of Spanish music as local vendors sell traditional items, clothing, housewares and a wide variety of freshly picked fruit and vegetables.
Whether you lounge by your private pool, stroll the local streets or visit other towns and villages, we know
your holiday in Moraira will be restful, enjoyable and certainly a time to remember.
denia
A visit to Denia is ideal for that stroll along long sandy beaches or rocky coastal cliffs, hiking down a mountain
path or rubbing shoulders with the fishermen, a wander through the narrow streets of the old town, or relaxing
on part of the 10km Las Marines beach.
The town sits at the foot of the Montgo Mountain, which is shared by Javea and Denia and is crowned by a castle
from which you have excellent views over the 20km of coastline.
To the north of the town you have fine sandy beaches and shallow waters, such as Las Marines, L’Almadrava and
Les Bovetes. To the south lie a series of small coves, known as Les Rotes, is a paradise for divers.
Farther inland you have the Marquesat Plain, which is peppered with a myriad of villages. White walls and red
roofs peek up over the orchards.
From Denia you can catch a ferry to Ibiza, Mallorca or the unspoilt island of Formantera. With just two hours
travelling time, this is possible even for the day.

Local Language
Although English is spoken by many local people, it is always good to try and use the local language. The language here is actually
“Valenciano” which is spoken by people from this area, But as there are many people living within this area from otherparts of Spain
the lingua franca is the Castillian Spanish. Here are a few common words to try out:

If there is one thing guaranteed to be happening every day of the week in Spain, it is a market day!
Markets are the focal points for most towns’ and can always be found easily. They are generally bustling with locals going about
their weekly shopping and just about everything can be found here.
From household goods, to fruit and vegetables, clothes and souvenirs, they can all be found at the weekly market.
Remember when visiting the markets to use some of your bartering skills and see if you can get a better price.

Spain is predominantly Catholic and religion plays a very important part in the Spanish way of life. Churches are a focal point
of towns and villages and are very ornate inside making them well worth a visit. Church services are held in Spanish although
there are some services that are held in the English language.

On the road from Teulada to Moraira lies the chapel of the Font Santa, which is dedicated to the holy Vincent Ferrer. Beside the
actual chapel, and in the same building, water can be seen leaking through the rockface. According to legend, in the 15th Century
Vincent Ferrer, on request of Sister Constança who lived in Teulada, performed a miracle by causing water to gush from the stone.
Since then water constantly drips from this source, irrespective of the level of rainfall in the area. Local people visit the font to
collect holy water, and to light candles and pray.

JAVEA
El Arenal
The Arenal beach area is the commercial and tourist zone of Javea . The beautiful,
sandy bay is planted with palm trees and has play areas for children. The bay is
fringed by the promenade with its wonderful choice of bars and restaurants offering
national and international specialities. This area is very lively at night.
La Granadella Beach
La Granadella Beach is a small pebble cove adapted for practicing diving. La Granadella beach also has disabled facilities and a Blue
Flag. On this beach is also the Club Nautico de Javea with a wide range of watersports available. There are also a number of restaurants on the beech front to dine in.
Cala Sardinera
La Sardinera Beach is located on the northern side of Cabo de San Martin. It is a natural creek with boulders and crystal waters only
accessible by foot along a path roaming through pinewoods.
Cala Blanca Cala Blanca Beach is also known as La Caleta Beach. It is a quiet and isolated creek with gravel and boulders only accessible by foot
and offering a beautiful sight of the white rockies in the area.
MORAIRA
El Portet Beach
El Portet Beach is a beautiful, sandy cove beach with access for the disabled. Moraira´s
headland shelters perfectly this beautiful sandy and rocky creek, making the shallow
calm waters very safe for young children.
Playa LÁmpolla
This is widely considered Moraira´s main beach, due to its size and convenient location in the town centre. It has plenty of parking,
disabled access, a beach cafe and easy access to the town centre for a spot of lunch in the sun.
Plagetes
Further along the coast road towards Calpe you will find the beaches of Platgetes, which have very easy to access with ample parking. They are within easy walking distance of very good shops, restaurants and bars, and have a lovely small promenade for
walking or resting on.

CALPE
Cantal Roig
Cantal Roig beach is a small creek with fine sand located south of the
fishing port. The waters here are calm and shallow, but there
are no facilities.
La Fossa Levante Beach
La Fossa Beach, also called Levante beach, is located between the Punta de Bassetes and the Peñón de Ifach. A wide bay is formed
where this beach is located, one of the most bustling in Calpe. This beach stretches a great length and is bordered by a bustling
promenade with excellent facilities. The beach has been awarded the prestigious blue flag and has excellent restaurants and facilities for children and the disabled. The sand on this beach are whiter than that of Moraira or Javea, and we recommend this for beach
lovers.
THE BEST OF THE REST
Altea
In the Marina Baixa region of the Costa Blanca, the city of Altea opens up to the sea from one of the most beautiful bays on the
Mediterranean coast. On the top of a hill, protected from cold winds by the mountains behind, this place has all the charm of a
Mediterranean coastal village.
Oliva
Oliva has three blue flag beaches of an excellent standard. This wonderful town is also fantastic for watersports, golf and a dose of
Spanish tradition and history.
Benidorm
Benidorm’s beaches and many leisure facilities have made it the Costa Blanca’s main tourist region. It boasts some of the best
beaches in Europe, with 3 miles of fine sand (which is cleaned daily), and great services and activities. Benidorm is considered the
true capital of the Costa Blanca.
Denia
Denia has almost twenty kilometres of coastline. To the north of the town, there are beaches of fine sand and shallow waters. To the
south lie a series of small coves along the rocky coast, known as Les Rotes, which is a paradise for fishermen and divers. The town
sits at the foot of a hill and boasts some of the best shoppping along the coast.
Villajoyosa
There is a fishing harbour and the local restaurants serve up some of the best seafood on the coast. The beach is second only to Benidorm, but is less crowded. Villajoyosa is the venue for one of the best fiestas in the region. Villajoyosa is the historical and administrative capital of the Marina Baixa.

Puerto Blanco
This is probably one of the best restaurants in Calpe or indeed on the Costa
Blanca. It is picturesquely situated next to the small harbour of La Canuta. The
service food and ambience is first class and we recommend it for all visitors. To
find it, Follow the sign for Mar y villa (Maryvilla), turn right on small roundabout
(opposite Guardia) follow road downhill for 1k. The restaurant is located on the
sharp right bend with harbour in front. - Tel: 965830977
Casa del Maco
This too is an extremely good restaurant. From the terrace guests can enjoy the
most magnificent view towards Calpe. Set in the hills above Calpe Pou Roig-Lleus
in a beautifully restored Spanish finca, a trip to this wonderful restaurant is well
worth the trouble. To find it, follow road N332 towards Benissa after a small garden centre on the left and just before bridge with a left gradient turn. Turn left up
a small single track road and continue for 2k until you see signs. - Tel: 965732842
La Regata
To be found on the Levante/ La Fosa beach back towards the sea 100mts to the
right of hotel Esmeralda. Next door to Fox's bar,. This restaurant has a 5 course
menu at weekday lunchtimes for 12 Euros, which is nothing short of fantastic.

For families with young kids, we suggest a meal at “Coconuts”, a wonderful,
child friendly restaurant / bar located on the Playa Levante beachfront. The

Located on the Arenal beachfront in Javea, at the opposite end to the Parador
hotel, with wonderful views from the terrace. This great restaurant offers
wonderful food in a very relaxed atmosphere. With a modern, stylish interior.

Los Remos
Again, located on the Arenal with wonderful views. This restaurant has
modern Spanish cuisine and is one of our favourite spots for a meal in
Javea. The service is exceptional and the food truly outstanding. It’s a great

Monsoon Cafe
Monsoon Cafe’s secret is to blend authentic Thai cuisine with a warm and
tranquil atmosphere. Whether watching the sun set over the Montgo from the
large terrace or sitting inside with a cool Singha beer, you’re sure to enjoy

Le Dauphin
This restaurant is situated in the bay of El Portet directly on the beach. The
Provencal Mediterranean style gives a very elegant but relaxed atmosphere,
from which you can enjoy spectacular views overlooking the bay of Moraira,
Calpe and in the background the enormous Peñon de Ifach. The food is French
Mediterranean with fresh fish out of the bay served each day. This is the
perfect spot to enjoy an unforgettable candlelit evening with a breath taking
view and the lovely breeze of the Mediterranean. Not cheap, but certainly worth

Options
Opened in early 2003, this trendy restaurant has split-level dining rooms with
modern and traditional touches. It is located in the centre of Moraira on the
Avenida de la Paz, close to the Castillo. The menu offers a varied choice of

Situated at the Moraira Boulevard in Spain you’ ll find Restaurant Eleven a

Algas bar is about 1km from Moraira beach with stunning views and a
wonderful ambience on summer nights. They offer light snacks and good
meals. Just follow the coast road from Moraira towards Calpe for about one

With its vast array of courses, and the wonderful climate, the Costa Blanca is a wonderful choice for
keen golfers. There are more than 20 courses in the Valencia region alone. Nestled between the
capes of San Antonio and Cabo de La Nao, Javea or Xabia, is on the northern section of the Costa
Blanca. Protected from the continental winds by the magnificent Montgo mountain barrier, gives
Javea a mild year round climate, making it ideal whenever you visit.
Club de Golf - Oliva Nova - Tel: 96 225 7666
Situated close to the resort town of Oliva, this course has top class golf facilities and was
voted the best of all Seve Ballesteros designed courses. The course is 18-hole, 72 par and
water plays a part in the difficulty of the course, with a number of lakes placed as obstacles
along its 6,270 metre length. With 15 out of 18 holes effected in this way it´s not surprising
that the Peugeot Oki Spanish National Championship has been held here on four occasions.

Located close to Javea, this is an ideal course for the summer heat, as walking around the
flat terrain, planted attractively with Mediterranean flora, requires minimal effort. A 9-hole
course, it has been designed to challenge with 34 bunkers strategically placed along its
length. The clubhouse has excellent facilities including two bars and a restaurant. There is
also a driving range with 20 bays, 2 putting greens, a chipping area and a practice bunker
La Sella Golf Resort & Spa Denia - Tel: 96 645 4252
La Sella Golf Course, designed by José María Olazábal, is adjacent to the Marriott hotel and
surrounded by beautiful Montgo Natural Park. The course is suitable for all levels of players,
and if you know how to use the full range of clubs then you should achieve a decent score.
Should you feel your skills need updating a little, then private lessons are available at this
course all year round.
Golf Ifach Moraira - Tel: 96 649 71 14
Situated in Moraira and forming part of a country estate this golf course has spectacular
views of the Rock of Ifach itself. Designed to be short and difficult, Javier Arana ensured
there are plenty of obstacles that take advantage of the terrain along with narrow fairways
and well placed bunkers. The 60 par, 9 hole course is made up of 6 par 3’s and 3 par 4’s. Players short on time but who relish a challenge will find this course deceptively tricky.

sports and recreation
Tennis
There are numerous tennis courts within the area, mostly attached to residential developments, and some allow non-residents to
hire for a small fee. There are also plenty of council-owned and private leisure facilities that include tennis courts. There is a
tennis club in Javea, Moraira and Calpe. For more information, please contact us, or the local tourist office.
Go-Karts
There are quite a few Go-Kart racing tracks located within most resorts. They are primarily well-run and include other facilities
on-site - such as children's track (with tiny two-stroke engines), viewing grandstand, bar, restaurant and plenty of parking . In our
opinion the best go karting experience is to be had at the Benidorm track on the road from Benidorm to Villajoyosa just outside

Windsurfing, Dinghies and other Water Sports
These activities are available in most resorts...particularly the bigger ones. Calpe has a good range of activities on offer, but real
thrill seekers should visit the Playa Levante in Benidorm, where you can experience every water sport on offer, from windsurfing
to paragliding.
Rock Climbing
The Costa Blanca has become the largest and most popular area in Spain for visiting climbers. The wealth and variety of climbing
in the area is truly staggering, and for every partially developed crag there are at least two other slightly less accessible ones that
haven't been touched yet. For information, please visit the local tourist office.
Jet Skis
Available to hire in most resorts from the beach. The modern ones actually circle back to get you if you fall off and the older ones
just stop (no, you don't have to catch them!). In Moraira there is Jet Ski rental available on the main promenade...look out for the
sign opposite the Ifach restaurant.
Water-skiing & Parasailing
These are available in Calpe. They take groups out to a raft for a 15 minute ski or flight around the beach. Boats can be hired in
Javea (in the canal alongside the Arenal Beach) fully equipped for skiing.
Scuba Diving
The rocky headlands and bays offer excellent sub-aqua sport for the snorkel or scuba-diver. There is a dive academy in all three of
the resorts we cover, Moraira, Denia and Calpe. In Moraira, the dive centre offer waterskiing and scuba diving and this is located
in the small group of shops on the Moraira Calpe road, next to Colby´s bar. For more information or contact details, please ask.
Sea Fishing
There can be some quite good sport with bass and conger for the beach caster, especially at night. There are some quite good Grey
Mullet particularly in Calpe harbour. In Javea, the fishermen allow anglers to fish off their moored boats in the evening. Fishing is
prohibited in Moraira marina.
Freshwater Fishing
The interior of Spain boasts a wealth of waterways, mainly mountain rivers and streams, along with gigantic reservoirs. There is
some very good sport for the trout angler but the best fisheries are controlled and day permits are required. All of the reservoirs
contain the coarse species Carp, Tench, Barbel, Black Bass, Zander, Pike, Eels, Golden Orfe and Koi Carp. Please note that a permit
is required for fresh water fishing for each autonomous region but the cost is minimal. All that is required is your signature on the
form and a photocopy of your passport. Licences can be obtained by any gestor but take about a week to arrive. You can go to the

Quad Biking and Kayaking
There is a quad bike and a kayak excursion centre in Denia (just north of Javea) where children and adults can have a truly
exciting experience. They can take you on a circuit, or you can organise a group excursion, which is great fun for all the family. To

Boat Trip along the coast
There is a wonderful boat trip which travels along the coast from Calpe - Altea - Benidorm - Villajoyosa, - El Campello - Alicante.
The trip lasts one hour and 10 minutes and leaves at 11:30am on Tuesday, Thursdays and Sundays from Calpe. Adults go for 25

Algar Waterfalls
This is a beauty spot that is run with the visitors participation in conservation and development of “Fonts de l’Algar” and its
surrounding area. Visit the riverside, a walk along the paths and bathe in its various pools and waterfalls. Don’t forget the your

Alicante
The Capital Alicante (or Alicant) is situated in a bay which is closed in to the north by Cabo Las Huertas, and to the south by Cabo
Santa Pola, enjoys pleasant temperatures all year round (with average of 18 degrees). A tour in the city would usually start in
the Paseo Maritimo, a promenade, or Explanada de Espana where both tourists and local people stroll under shade provided by
two rows of tall palm trees. The Iglesia de Santa Maria is in the square of the same name and is one of the city's most famous
monuments. Visit the Municipal Art Museum (tel.: 514.07.68) in the Casa de la Asegurada where paintings are on display or the The
Symbolis Fortress, the Castillo de Santa Barbara, which is located 200 metres up on Benacantil hill. This castle comprises three
different enclosures each at different heights on the bare rock. The lower enclosure dates from the Bourbon era, the middle
precinct from the sixteenth century, and the upper is part of the site of the original fortress. The castle had drawbridges,
dungeons, living quarters for the nobility, turrets, a gunpowder arsenal along with the eighteenth century chapel, “Ermita de Santa
Barbara”. It can be entered from Paseo de Gomiz, through a tunnel (200 metres long) which has been dug into the rock. At the
end of the tunnel are two lifts which go up to the fortress. Hemmed in by the port to the south and the Grossa mountains to the
north, playa (beach) of Postiguet, in the heart of the city, is very popular in the summer.
Valencia
Valencia is Spain’s third largest city half way down the Eastern
Mediterranean Coast. Well known for its architectural beauty, we think
this wonderful city is well worth a day trip, or more if you are staying
long enough. Valencia has a totally stunning and compact old town centre,
packed with gorgeous buildings, historic sights, squares, gardens, museums

Calpe Old Town
For some years running in the summer, the “Arts and Crafts Fair” is held in the Old Town centre of Calpe every day except Mondays.
From June to September, the Calle Jos Antonio and the Plaza de Espana will present a lively scene in the evening, not only artists
and craftsmen putting up their stands but there are also workshops and live entertainment as well as an art exhibition.
Penon de Ifach (Calpe Rock)
Ifach is indeed a large rock, measuring 332m in height. Today, it has been transformed into a nature park to protect its unique
vegetation and over 300 species of animals, including colonies of sea birds that use it as a nesting area. Located here is a nature
school where local carnations and even original Robertonian orchids can be admired. The park itself can be reached up a zigzagging
track which is compulsory climbing for anyone anxious to get a panoramic view over the entire Marina Alta coastline. You do not
have to be an experienced climber to enjoy this trip and it is suitable for all the family.

Guadalest
This is a place not to be missed; the drive up to the Moorish Village of Guadalest takes you through lemon, orange, almond and
olive groves. From the bottom of the valley, Guadalest looks like an eagles nest perched on top of the mountain. Climb the
mythical 12 steps to heaven and gaze upon the olive, almond and fruit trees that cover the valley. A leisurely stroll will take you
through the cobbled streets, lined with quaint, traditional Spanish shops full of gifts and souvenirs. You will see many of the
older women of the village sitting outside their homes making the famous hand made lace and knitwear. You can purchase these
goods at much lower price than you will find in a resort. There is a fortress there, which was built over 1200 years ago, many have
tried to conquer the fortress but have failed. One of the reasons all have failed is because there is a single entrance to the fort,
built in 50ft of solid rock.
Algar Waterfalls
These fantastic waterfalls are hidden away, just past the town of Callosa En Sarria. Fresh mountain water cascades up to 80 feet
high. You can swim in the water at certain points, although be warned it is freezing and is definitely not for the faint hearted.
Well worth a visit and one which could be combined with a visit to Guadalest or Altea market on Tuesday mornings.
Caves of Canelobre
Near Busot, 24 km north of Alicante. This year round attraction is a huge natural underground chamber where the mineral
deposits resemble – candleabra! Effectively lit to properly illuminate nature’s fantastic handiwork the caves are also used for
concerts. There are great views and paths for walking tours close to the entrance.
Benidoleig Grotto
Visit this splendid 300m long cavern and admire the stalagmites and stalactites along with the wonderous (over 20m) dome
cave. The cavern is located on the roadway between Pedreguer and Benidoleig and today it still contains both human and animal
bones. along trails that are over 50,000 years old. Opened daily 365 days per year. Tel: 96 575 02 85
Fiestas
Anyone who has visited Spain is likely to know how much the country enjoys its
fiestas. These can be cultural, solemn or packed full of fun. They can include
processions, competitions singing and dancing and may incorporate bull-fighting.

Terra Mitica Amusement Park Benidorm
Terra Mitica is one of Europe’s most exciting theme parks and is
Benidorm’s main tourist attraction. It has something for all age groups
and for all ‘fear thresholds’. Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of the
adrenaline rush as there are always plenty of gentler options,
including some great water rides. To make sure that younger children
never feel left out the park has cleverly constructed 15 kiddies rides,
which are replicas of the scarier adult version. By car just get on the

Aqualandia & Mumdomar Benidorm
Aqualandia is a must for fans of water parks as it’s the biggest one in
Europe. Next to it is Mundomar which is a huge marine theme park
dedicated to sea animals. The dolphin show is the highlight of the day.
Each park merits a full day and you can buy a combined entrance ticket
which allows you to visit both of them on different days. Aqualandia is
open every day from the 14th May to the 12th October from 10am. The
ticket at the time of writing costs 24 Euros for adults and 17 Euros for
children. For Mundomar opening times ask at the tourist information
office in the centre of town. The ticket at the time of writing cost 22
Euros for adults and 16 Euros for children. For the latest opening times

Terra Natura Wildlife Park Benidorm
Located almost next to Terra Mitica, Terra Natura is another large
scale theme park where animals roam in their natural habitat although Benidorm isn’t quite the same as the plains of Africa! Take
bus 21 or 22 to get there. Otherwise drive out of Benidorm on the
CV70 road heading for La Nucia. It’s well signposted shortly after
going under the main A7 motorway. It is open from 10am to 8pm in
summer and 10am to 5pm in winter. Check their website at www.

Electricity and Power Cuts in Spain
With the recent growth in Spain, particularly in this area, there are times when the electricity simply can not cope with the amount
of use. If there is a power cut, it is likely to be for a very short time (usually only minutes) and will often come back on without any
action on your part.
It is not advisable to use high output appliances (such as kettle, cooker, hair dryer, microwave or blower heaters) simultaneously as
this may cause overloading. However, if the power does go off you will find a fuse box with breaker switches on the wall. usually
this is a white box next to the front door or in the kitchen, but the specific location of your box can be found in the villa information for
this property. If you need help finding it, please call us.
TO OPERATE CORRECTLY ALL BREAKER SWITCHES MUST BE IN THE “UP” POSITION.
IF OPEN THE BOX (THIS IS PERFECTLY SAFE) AND ANY OF THE SWITCHES IS “DOWN”, SIMPLY PUSH IT TO THE UP POSITION AND YOU
SHOULD REGAIN POWER.
If the switches are already in the “UP” position, this means the power cut is caused by the outside authorities and will come back on
as soon as possible.
Phoning Home
Local public phones can be found all over the resort. This is the cheapest way to make a call back home. After picking up the receiver,
wait until you get a dialling tone before inserting any coins. It is a good idea to test the phone is working by inserting a 10 cent coin
first, if this registers on the screen insert the rest of your money, you will need 1 euro coin and to make a connection you must insert
a minimum of 2 euros. As in the UK you will get back unused coins.
The phones operate with coins or phone cards. Alternately you can make your calls from public phone offices and some mobile phone
shops. The cheapest time to make a call is after 22h00.
If you have a mobile phone then it will work providing it has an international roaming service. Not all mobiles will work and in some
built up areas, a service may not be available.
Phone cards are available from your representative and they cost 10 euros. These are great and save you from carrying loads of
change!! The codes for phoning home are:

Shopping Hours
In Spain it is normal to enjoy the siesta time, when everything shuts down in the afternoon and then comes to life at night.
Shops opening hours are generally: 09h00 – 13h30 & 16h30 – 21h00. These times can vary slightly, but most are closed on Sunday.

Credit Card
Most major credit cards are widely accepted in shops. Some stores will ask for a form of identification, usually a passport. If you
have a photo ID driving licence this will usually suffice.
Banks
Banks are open Monday to Friday and the opening hours are: 08h30 – 14h30. They are closed at weekends and on bank holidays and
fiesta days. Cash machines are open 24 hours.
Supermarkets
These can be found all over the resorts and familiar brands from back home are widely available. Open Cor, opposite the Repsol
petrol station in Moraira, is now open until 3am, 7 day a week.
Newspapers
If you want to keep up to date with the news from home, then English language newspapers are available daily. Some of the tabloids
have a Spanish printed edition and contain the news of the same day.
Tipping
It is customary here in Spain to tip in bars and restaurants. It usually is suggested that a tip of 10% of the bills be left. However, if
you are unhappy with the service do not leave a tip.
Water
Although the water is perfectly safe to drink from the taps, it does have a high mineral content and this can make the taste a little
unpleasant. For this reason we do recommend drinking the bottled water, which can be purchased from supermarkets in anything
from 1 litre to 5 litre bottles.

The water used in cafes, bars and restaurants is usually distilled water and is used for ice cubes and for making tea and coffee.
Water is very precious in this region of Spain - please do not waste it. Take short showers rather than baths and always make sure
that your taps are turned off properly. In the height of summer, the water can sometimes be turned off for a few hours during the
day. The council will provide water tanks where you can go and fill up your bottles for cooking etc. But the water is not turned off for
very long periods.
Chemist
The Spanish for chemist is Farmacia and is easily recognised by the green cross outside, which is lit up.
Opening hours are similar to shop times, but they will list an emergency chemist that will be open when all others are closed.
If it is only a minor medical problem, then the pharmacist will be able to prescribe medication over the counter. There are certain
items that can be bought over the counter in Spain that in the UK would normally require a prescription.

Should you need to see a doctor whilst you are on holiday, then you will be able to find an English speaking doctor very easily. Check
our useful contact numbers section. If there is an emergency you will need to go to Denia Hospital.
Dining out in Spain
Whilst you are here on holiday why not try some of the local dishes that Spain is famous for. Food is an important part of the Spanish
way of life and in the summer months, families will gather in a restaurant and spend hours talking and laughing, enjoying the food
and wine. We have listed some of the dishes below that can be found on most menus.
PAELLA
A saffron flavoured rice-based meal made with chicken, pork, squid, seafood and vegetables cooked in a large flat pan.
The ingredients vary from chef to chef and from region to region.
TORTILLA
A thick potato, egg and onion omelette that is eaten hot or cold.
ALI-OLI
Mayonnaise made with garlic and served with bread.
TAPAS
These are small portions of typical Spanish dishes and are served as a snack in Tapas Bars.
Driving & Parking in Moraira
The large car park is FREE but it is used for the market on Fridays! To park in the blue bays you must pay between 09.00 and 15.00
and after 17.00hrs the fine for non-payment is 90 Euros!!
With your hire car, you have the whole of the Costa Blanca to explore. Whilst on the roads you may come across a few road signs that
you are unfamiliar with and some of the rules of the road will be a little different.

Always drive on the right hand side of the road.
At roundabouts, you must drive round anti-clockwise.
Always wear your seatbelt.
Remember to carry with you: your driving licence, and car hire contract.
Never leave any valuable items in the car.
Traffic lights are often suspended high above the road and are difficult to see. They follow the same light sequence as back home, but sometimes without the amber.
Parking in towns can be a nightmare. Always use the public car parks or blue marked parking spaces. There is a charge for these. White marked parking is unusually free, yellow marked zones are no parking and here you will face a fine or your car being towed away.
Spanish drivers tend to use their horn when passing other vehicles; do not be alarmed by this.
Take extra care when taking the winding mountain roads.
Do not use a mobile phone when driving. This offence carries an on the spot fine. Even when using a hands-free unit.
health and safety
BATHROOMS
Please take extra care in bathrooms. Most do not have non-slip mats for baths and showers. Usually they will have tiled floors.
Please be extra careful when stepping out of the bath or shower.
GLASS SAFETY
Glass and patio doors are in abundance in Mediterranean resorts. When the sun is shining it can be difficult to see if a door or
patio is open or closed. Please take great care!
ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
Do not touch any electrical appliances with wet hands or when wearing wet clothing. Please report any electrical faults to your
villa office as soon as possible and inform your Representative.
MARBLE FLOORS
Most accommodations in Spain have marble floors. When wet they become very slippery. Do not walk on marble floors with wet
feet and discourage children from running around on them.
CHILDRENS SAFETY
Please be extra vigilant with your children whilst on holiday. It is easy to sometimes allow children that extra freedom, but there
are always new surroundings and dangers.

Never leave your children unattended especially around the swimming pool, near balconies or play grounds.
When you are sitting in a bar or watching any entertainment, ensure that you can see your children and that they are supervised.
Don’t let children play with any animals, domestic or otherwise.
ANIMALS
It is better that you do not feed or play with any animals, domestic or wild. If you or your children should get scratched or bitten,
seek medical attention immediately and always report any such incident to your Representative.
POOL SAFETY
The following instructions have been put together to ensure your own safety and peace of mind during your stay. A Pool
Attendant usually comes once a week to clean the Pool and adjust the chemicals for the treatment of the water when necessary.

Know what the pool depths are and make sure that you do not swim out of your depth.

Remain calm and do not panic.
Act quickly and alert others to leave the villa.
Call the Fire Brigade. The Emergency number is 112. The call and any help received is free.
Be aware that your own attempts to extinguish a fire could be wrong and you could make matters worse. If in doubt, please call the Fire Brigade.
In case you do decide to tackle the fire yourself, do so only if you are not endangering yourself or other persons.
If the fire is non-electric and does not involve fuels, oil or flammable liquids, douse it with water.
Think and find out the most secure way for you and your party to exit the villa.
If you are trapped in a room with fire approaching, shut the door between you and the fire. Put a wet towel or blanket at the bottom of the door to prevent smoke coming through. Be aware that a wooden door may not last long. Call for help from the area where you are trapped.
Insurance
We strongly recommend that you take out Travel Insurance, which should cover the cost of medical emergencies, either at the
Hospital or Clinics. However check the small print to see what exactly you are entitled to. Obtain and keep all receipts from Clinics
and Pharmacies, as these will be necessary if you are making a claim.
Crime
Spain still has a low crime rate due mainly to its honest, local population. However it would be as well to take a few simple
precautions. Keep your valuables in a safe place, preferably on you, and keep your credit cards and cheques separately.
Please also make sure that you keep the villa completely locked when you are out, and
use all security features available.
As in all busy resorts and cities all over the world, it is an unfortunate fact that pickpockets will prey on tourists. Always keep an
eye on your bags, wallets and purses and be extra vigilant around busy, crowded areas.

Be taken in by people on the street telling you that you have won a holiday etc. There will be a catch and it will cost you money.
Carry any valuable possessions in your handbags. This includes any excess cash, passports or travellers cheques.
Leave bags or cameras unguarded on the beach or by the poolside if you are not nearby to keep an eye on them. Also be very careful in crowded places, such as markets, cities and at bus stops.
Buy jewellery, flowers or clothing from people who approach you in the street.
Carry wallets in back pockets. Also be very careful if you are wearing a bum-bag, pickpockets can be very clever.

What channels does my satellite TV include?
Some villas include limited SKY TV and many others offer local Spanish satellite channels, possibly with SKY News. Due to SKY TV's
changing policies we cannot guarantee reception of English satellite TV and instead now offer DVD players in most of our villas. If you
would like to do so, you can bring your own DVDs with you and there are also a few places to rent these in town.
What sort of maid service will I receive?
Your villa will be cleaned before you arrive and after you leave, and after 7 - 9 days in the villa we will provide a change of linen.
What do I do if I have a problem?

What do I do with my rubbish?
Please take your rubbish to one of the large grey bins which can be found all over, either on the side of the roads or in designated areas.
You can use any grey bin as these are for public use. We would also encourage you to use the recycling bins, green is usually for glass and
yellow for plastic.
Can I drink the water?
We would not recommend that you drink the tap water, but if you do so, please boil it beforehand. Mineral water can be purchased
cheaply and easily from any supermarket.
My electricity has gone off….what do I do?
Power cuts during the summer months are quite common due to the extra strain on the grid, but it will usually return quite quickly.
Occasionally, your power in your villa can short out, and it may be necessary to trip the mains switch. Please ask one of our staff
members for the location of the switch box if you cannot find it or see it´s location at the end of this guide.
I broke something….what do I do?
Our villas belong to individuals, and we request that clients take the greatest care with their property. It is understandable that accidents
do happen and breakages may occur. We would appreciate, if possible that these breakages are replaced locally. Glasses and pottery
items can be obtained at quite reasonable prices. For damaged articles requiring repair and not replacement please notify us as soon as
possible after the incident so we can take the necessary action. In addition, following any breakage, take care to clear up any fragments
of glass or pottery etc. This is not only for your safety but also for the sake of others. Please remember that there will be new clients
coming into the villa after you, who will expect it also to be in good condition. In the event of serious damage caused by neglect of the
property we will charge the clients credit card for any damage caused, in accordance with our contract.
I have no hot water
In most villas, the boiler for heating and hot water is supplied by gas, which comes in canisters, which may need replacing when they run
out. There will be instructions left in the villa for using the gas canisters, but if you are in any doubt whatsoever, please call Derek and
he will organise this for you.
We have no water at all
Periodically, water is cut off in this area, and this happens quite frequently in the summer months. It is unfortunately always a case of
waiting for it to come back on. Usually this is within one or two hours, but sometimes it can be a whole day. You can easily determine
whether this is a neighbourhood problem or just a plumbing problem with your villa, by checking with neighbours if they also have no
water. Again, if you need help, please call Derek.

On the day of your departure, you must vacate by 10:00 hrs.
This is to allow preparation for incoming guests. Some flexibility may be possible
depending on arrival/departure times. Please speak to the Villa Holiday Direct
representative if you would like to see if a late checkout can be arranged.
We make every effort to ensure that villas are in a suitable condition for your arrival,
your respect in leaving it the same way would be greatly appreciated.
Before leaving your villa, please dispose of your rubbish in the green wheely-bins
provided nearby. Please wash up cutlery and crockery.
Remember to return in your keys as directed, this is normally to the key safe (s)
where they were collected.
You will need to be at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight is due to depart.
