MES K-2ND GRADES CURRICULUM PRESENTATIONS
Recently Mattamuskeet Elementary Schools Kindergarten through Second Grade teachers welcomed parents and guardians to their classroom curriculum nights.
The purpose of this informative program was to give parents an overview of Common Core Math/
Language Arts, Reading 3-D, and about what they’re doing in the classroom. The Second Grade also included a video about how Parents can help their children learn. They were given many helpful tips concerning the best ways that they as parents can become their child’s most important teacher.
Some of the ways parents can accomplish this is by discussing with the student the importance of the different subjects in their daily lives, giving them examples of how people use them, encouraging them to
ask questions, and challenging them in their strengths and supporting their areas of weaknesses. Most
importantly, parents should be positive about their child’s efforts, remembering that children learn on different levels.
The Kindergarten agenda also included the first nine weeks Grading Period Awards.
The parents and teachers enjoyed an assortment of refreshments while they listened to the very informative presentations by Mrs. Cox and Mrs. Spencer (2nd Grade teachers), Ms. Hollowell and Miss Lewis (1st
Grade teachers), and Mrs. Marslender and Miss Swab (Kindergarten teachers).
The parents were offered a selection of free age appropriate books to select from the overflow in the MES
reading room to read to their children in order to help improve their reading skills.
Thanks and appreciation also go out to Mr. Coleman, Principal, Mrs. Fran Coleman, Mrs. Barbara Hux,
MES Instructional Coach, Mrs. Earlene Dunbar, and Mrs. Sandra O’Neal for doing their part at the different Education Stations that were set up throughout the room. Parents were encouraged to ask questions
and sign up for individual conferences.

“GOODIES WITH GRANDPARENTS
On Friday September 13, MES Second Grade students
excitedly welcomed their grandparents to join them at
school for ―Goodies with Grandparents‖.
The Students worked with graphic organizers to help
them compose a paragraph describing their grandparents. They shared their writings and enjoyed a special
snack with their proud grandparents by their sides.
SCHOOL LIBRARY BOOK FAIR
The library doors were officially opened on Friday, the
27th as the Book Fair sales for students and others officially began. The students, teachers, and parents are
always in great anticipation to see what kinds of exciting adventures in reading were being offered this year.

Great American Smokeout
It’s your chance to quit smoking during the 38th Annual Great American Smokeout (GASO) happening November 21st. On the third Thursday of November each
year, the American Cancer Society encourages smokers to use the date to make a
plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By quitting, for
even one day, you are taking an important step towards a healthier life.
If you or someone you know is a smoker, the idea of quitting has probably
crossed your mind. Almost 70% of smokers want to stop smoking and about 52%
of them try to stop each year. If you quit smoking now, the benefits will start almost immediately. Twenty minutes after quitting your heart rate drops, twelve
hours after quitting the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal,
and ten years after quitting your risk of dying from lung cancer drops by half.
Why not join the thousands of soon-to-be former smokers and quit on November
21st, the date of the Great American Smokeout.
Contact your local health department in Region 9 of the Community Transformation Grant Project (CTG Project) and they can provide you with resources to help
you quit smoking from QuitlineNC.com. Health departments in Region 9 include:
Albemarle Regional Health Services, Dare County Department of Public Health,
Hyde County Health Department, Martin-Tyrrell-Washington Health District,
Hertford County Public Health Authority, Northampton County Health Department, and Edgecombe County Health Department.
The CTG Project, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), gives communities an important opportunity to develop and implement
initiatives to reduce risk factors responsible for chronic diseases, the leading
causes of death and disability. The goal of the CTG Project is to create healthier
communities. For more information about the CTG Project or quitting:

Excerpts of stories and poems from Mr. Charles
Greene’s 6th Grade HEALTHFUL LIVING CLASS
When I was young, I had no friends. Sometimes I
would cry in my hands. Sadness, sobbing, and
tales of woe would trail behind wherever I go.
MY IDEA OF A GOOD FRIEND
The perfect friend for me would be someone who
is completely drug-free. No booze, wine, cigars,
or weed would touch the hands of…...lets call him
Steve!
You got to be able to laugh and smile
And maybe even if it’s once in a while
Who can ride alongside on a horse
And like me for who I am of course
Somebody easily loved
And doesn’t push and shove
Steve wouldn’t bully, not one soul, reporting
trouble wherever he goes. A kind fellow he is,
who loves Hockey Sports, and watches Dish.
One more thing about Steve; he would protect
the victims of sad events…………………………………..

GIVE THANKS TO GOD ALWAYS
Be Thankful
I’m reminded that it is soon to be our
Thanksgiving holiday. Especially, for
the Christian, every day should be a
time for thanksgiving and praises to God
for all He has done for us. Gratitude has
been linked to increased levels of happiness and life satisfaction. Giving thanks
is one of the most powerful ways there is
to increase your well-being.
Be thankful that you don’t already
have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to
look forward to?
―Reflect upon your present blessings, of
which every man has plenty; not on your
past misfortunes of which all men have
some.‖ — Charles Dickens
―Both abundance and lack exist simultaneously in our lives, as parallel realities.
It is always our conscious choice which
secret garden we will tend… when we
choose not to focus on what is missing
from our lives but are grateful for the
abundance that’s present — love, health,
family, friends, work, the joys of nature
and personal pursuits that bring us
pleasure — the wasteland of illusion
falls away and we experience Heaven on
earth.‖
–Sarah Ban Breathnach
Be thankful when
you don’t know something
For it gives you the
opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you
opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your
strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you’re tired and
weary
Because it means
you’ve made a difference.
