On October 27, 2014, citizens in Ottawa will go to the polls to
choose the men and women who will represent them at City
Council for the next 4 years. City Council makes decisions
about services that affect our everyday lives.
Key messages were developed for this election by Making
Votes Count Where We Live project, an exciting 3-year joint
initiative by the Coalition of Community Health and Resource
Centres of Ottawa (Coalition of CHRCs) and City for All Women Initiative (CAWI).
Several residents from communities across the city and community organizations
have developed questions for candidates on four different issues; Affordable
housing, Good food for fll, Safe and affordable Transit and Employment. For more

Proud gardeners of the Orleans Community Garden
Ruby Anna Choi Wiesner and Claude Bertrand share a common interest in growing
their own organic fruits and vegetables. Ruby is the youngest member of the
local gardening community while Claude, a veteran member, tilled his first plot of
ground eight years ago.
The Orleans Community Garden (OCG) is a multigenerational place for children and people of all ages in the
community to learn to live more sustainably in the urban
area. It promotes gardening as a healthy and cost-effective
activity. It is located at 3350 St. Joseph Blvd and Tenth Line
Rd, across from the East Division police station.
Members of the OCG are always willing to share their bounty
with the community. Last year, they donated over 1400
pounds of vegetables to the Ottawa Mission.
The Wiesner family; Ruby, Heejin and Garrett are marking their third year as
members of the OCG. Their focus this year is on growing organic produce to
make homemade baby food for Ruby. The family project provides them (her ??)
with fresh organic produce along with a sense of community, as
well as an energizing, outdoor, physical activity.
The OCG is run by a board of directors (members of the OCG).
They include President Gina Lapointe; Treasurer Claude Bertrand;
Secretary Sylvie Bertrand; and site maintenance supervisor, Marco
Valle.
Gina Lapointe says that it is a “combination of vision, and energy
to follow through that makes this community garden a success.”
The garden provides a sense of community and an opportunity to
develop friendships outside of work and family. The subjects most
discussed are bugs, groundhogs, soil structure and weather. It is an opportunity
to learn life skills such as gardening, caning and building.
The cost for a gardening plot is $60 per year. It includes all materials, access to
gardening tools, three bags of organic compost and access to an onsite well.

La Leche League Canada [LLLC] – LLLC facilitates
breastfeeding meetings at the OCCRC. The
meetings take place every 2nd Monday of each
month from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The facilitators provide
breastfeeding information and encouragement to
interested parents and offer breastfeeding support
on a continuing care model from breastfeeding
preparation right through to weaning.
First Words – [speech & language services] Focus on
prevention, early identification and treatment of
speech and language problems in young children.

What motivates you to be a volunteer in this organization?
“I feel blessed with my life and want to give back to the community.
This is the right time in my life.”
What is your role at the Food Bank?
“Mostly I do coding, shelving and boxing. The tasks are to receive
food donations then we check everything and code the items to
make sure it is not expired. I also do stocking and refilling the front
shelves for people who use our services.”
What do you like most about your volunteer work?
“I find it rewarding and I enjoy coding, it is a brain exercise. I also
enjoy working with the team of volunteers. I feel that my little bit
is something that helps the community.”

“This is something that I am glad I did, I feel that I benefit from
it; it is also a mental challenge. It enriches my weekly routine and
I have met new people. I feel that it has helped me to appreciate
what I have.”
In Memoriam - the OCCRC remembers Germana Brunke (1933-2014)
It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to Germana Brunke an OCCRC volunteer for more than 20
years. Germana was a dedicated volunteer with a heart of gold helping every Friday at the Food Bank.
Having offered countless hours of her time, Germana has actively contributed in helping out many individuals and families in our community. Her dedication and passion to the Orléans-Cumberland Community
Resource Centre will leave a legacy to remember.

The Orléans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre is proud to
announce the return of Bids for Change Online Charity Auction beginning

families turn to our Centre every year for support during this expensive

Community Rising Stars
School Supplies Program – During the past months, the following amazing business partners have assisted us raise funds for our School Supplies
Program to benefit the OCCRC’s efforts to ensure that every child in our
community has the proper school supplies to succeed. A very big thank
you goes out to Toscano/Walker ReMax Metro City Realty team who collected funds through their Set4School fundraising campaign. Another big
thank you goes out to Staples Canada on Tenth Line who also collected
funds through their Back To School Supply Drive. One last thank you goes
out to Place D’Orleans who also collected articles by inviting shoppers in
the mall to fill a bus with school supplies.
The Paul Rushforth Real Estate Charity Golf Tournament – On June
27, the very dedicated team at Paul Rushforth Real Estate hosted the 3rd
Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the GreyHawk Golf Club in support of
the Orléans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre and the Do It For
Daron Foundation. After the final tally, over $20,000 was raised as 156
golfers enjoyed a spectacular day of golf. The OCCRC would like to thank
all the golfers, the sponsors and especially the Paul Rushforth Real Estate
Team for putting on a first class event. See you next year!
Gear Up Orleans – Congratulations to the organizers of the 2014 Gear
Up Orléans program. Thanks to their efforts and the generosity of area
residents who donated dozens of pairs of hockey skates and related
equipment to the program last spring, dozens of children from financially
challenged families will be able to enjoy the game of hockey this season,
who might not otherwise have been able to. Kudos to all those involved in
this wonderful initiative.
