OPPIKOPPI The first ever band weekend at the OppiKoppi farm took
place in May 1994 – 23 years ago! This makes the 2016 edition the 22nd
main August festival episode. (There were also several smaller supremely
inelegant weekend events.) Having started in the small bar to around 400
people with Valiant and Koos, no one realised that this was just the tip of the icebox.
OppiKoppi now hosts seven fixed stages (and a few roving pieces of craziness), roughly 160 sets of music and entertainment, 20 000 rabid fans and more bed nights in the
hotels than all of Sun City. (Trust in the tunes, they said. And it worked.). So for all the
fans and members of the extended OppiKoppi family, a massive thank you for driving

om verlies te hanteer en ’n

verwerk. Sink is ’n eietydse
drama wat die temas van verstrikking, verlies en vergifnis ontgin, teen die
agtergrond van die huidige Suid-Afrikaanse klassestruktuur en die ervarings van
buitelanders in die land. Rachel (Shoki Mokgapa), ’n Mosambiekse huiswerker en
ma wat in Johannesburg woon, moet die verlies van haar kind en die bitterheid
teenoor die mense wat vir die kind se dood verantwoordelik was, hanteer.
Sy word verplig om ’n lewensveranderende besluit te neem. Michelle (Anel
Alexander), is ’n vrou wat die koms van haar eerste kind en die skuldgevoelens
oor haar betrokkenheid by die dood van iemand anders se kind, moet probeer
verwerk. Chris (Jacques Bessenger), is ’n man wat worstel met dieselfde
gevoelens as sy vrou, Michelle, maar ook probeer om ’n verhouding met ’n
kollega, wat sy huwelik bedreig, te verstaan. Die twee vroue word vasgevang
in ’n huis waar die een die werkgewer en die ander een die bediende is. Chris
bevind hom in die middel en probeer om ewe veel empatie vir sy vrou sowel

WATCH BROOKLYN
This Irish-British-Canadian drama tells the story of a young Irish woman’s
immigration to Brooklyn, where she quickly falls into a romance. When her past
catches up with her, however, she must choose between two countries and
the lives that exist within them for her. In 1951, Eilis Lacey is a young woman
from a small town in southeast Ireland, where she lives with her mother and
sister Rose. Unable to find employment, her sister writes to an Irish priest
in Brooklyn who arranges for Ellis to go to the US to find a better future. In
Brooklyn, Ellis lives in a boarding house and finds a job at a department store,
but she is shy and quiet when interacting with customers Letters from her
sister make her homesick. The priest visits and tries to help Ellis by enrolling her
in bookkeeping classes. At a dance she meets Tony Fiorello, who becomes her
boyfriend. When her sister dies suddenly of an undisclosed illness, Eilis returns
home for a visit. Tony insists that they must get married first without telling
family or friends and she does. In Ireland, everybody seems to be conspiring
to keep Eilis from leaving. She goes on dates with an eligible and well-off
bachelor, Jim Farrell, who she starts having a connection with. Eilis starts to feel
that she now has a future in Ireland and stops opening the letters she receives
from Tony. Her former employer finds out of her marriage to Tony and Ellis is
reminded of what life is like in such a small town. She informs her mother of
her marriage and leaves for Brooklyn the next day, for a new future. The film
was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best
Adapted Screenplay and stars Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Domhnall Gleeson,
Jim Broadbent, and Julie Walters.

The country’s longest-
standing rock and blues
band of more than three
decades, Jack Hammer,
has just released its first
new album in eight years,
and if fans and critics’
reactions are anything
to go by, the long wait
was worthwhile. Guitar
and keys player and
vocal artist Piet Botha’s
harmonica is present throughout
the album, and the style is familiar, “lingering long after,
like a renegade’s signature tune in an old western.” one
critic waxed lyrical. The timbre in Piet’s singing is full of
longing and resistance. Jack Hammer also consists of
Johnathan Martin (guitars, vocals), Tertius du Plessis (bass)
and Paul van de Waal (drums), who for this album teamed
up with guest artists Arthur Dennis (guitars, vocals) and
Rudolph Dennis (drums, guest vocals) from Akkedis/Lyzyrd
Kyngs. The title track, That’s How We Roll, which echoes
Neil Young, and a haunting cover of Four Jacks and Jill’s
Master Jack are just three highligths on the nine-track
album. The hair-raising harmonies of Emily and Where
Is the Clown are clear reminders of why Jack Hammer is
at its best when Piet Botha and Johnathan Martin come
together. Said one critic: “Handful of Rain can best be
summed up in Sweet Soul Music, Piet Botha’s collaboration
with the Soweto String Quartet: violins, harmonica and
electric guitars join on a song about rivers turning into
seas, about songs turning our solitude into a universe of
connected souls: ‘Keep the music in your heart / You will
never walk alone.’

Danksy haar geloof, sielkundige behandeling, wilskrag en die
groot omgee van haar man, het Amor geleer hoe om liefde te
gee en te aanvaar. Dit is hoegenaamd nie ’n maklike boek nie,
maar die leser kan dit toemaak met hoop in die hart. Ook in

are proud ambassadors of our town and for the country.

ormer Mrs SA 2014 finalist Lorna Greyling (37) is more than ready and excited about
where this new adventure will lead her.
Behind the groomed appearance is someone who is no stranger to crime and
hardship. Her husband Nick was abducted and tortured in Nigeria while on a work
assignment there in 2010, and that is why her cause would be a #NOcrime campaign
should she wear the crown.
“The trauma we went through after his ordeal in Nigeria totally changed our lives.
The cost of counselling and medical services was very high and piled up long after. We
were lucky, my husband survived, but many families lose their breadwinners, or they
are left disabled. It is unfair that law-abiding people have to pay for crime. I am a proud
ambassador of Partners in Crime, a wonderful organisation that raises funds to help
victims of crime and offers free counselling. It also works closely with business
and the police to combat crime positively and proactively.”
The Greylings also had to face, among other trials, financial difficulties
and retrenchment. “Everything we went through makes more sense when I
use it to be an agent of change and to touch the lives of others. Mrs Africa
gives me the platform to live my passion and to fulfil my purpose. One
person cannot change the world, but one person can make a difference
to someone’s life.”
She has also just written, composed and released her first song that
brings a message of hope to South Africans who face challenges
such as crime, unemployment and hopelessness daily.
As a mother, wife, owner of a beauty and wellness centre,
author of two books, public speaker, image consultant, actress,
TV presenter, and part-time gymnastics trainer, how does
she keep all the balls in the air? “I am not sure I always do, but
good planning and a good support system are invaluable. My
husband works away from home often and with three busy girls
life is hectic, but it keeps me out of mischief!” she laughs.
As a deeply spiritual person Lorna has found a way to
reconcile the world of beauty pageants with her faith. “For a
long time in my life I felt I was not pretty enough, not slim
enough, not good enough. My faith has changed that and
I cannot think of a better place to share my testimony than
through the pageants.”
Over the next few months Lorna will be putting in a lot
of hard work to get pageant ready. “When I get on that stage
for the finale in November, I will be as ready as I can be to
represent Hartbeespoort and South Africa.”

M
rs Africa 2016 wasn’t on the to-do list of Alaine du Rand (28), manager of
the Hartbeespoort branch of a national hair and beauty chain this year, but
when her area manager nominated her, she decided to go all out for it.
“I work in beauty, but bar a few small competitions when I was still at
school, this is unfamiliar ground. Making it to the Top 40 delegates has boosted
my confidence and I am really excited about the friends I have made and will still
make, about the experience and the chance to make a difference,” says Alaine, who
studied somatology in Potchefstroom and has only been in Hartbeespoort for a
short while, but is already making her mark.
“Since I was a little girl standing in front of the mirror, I would wonder what it
would be like to be this beauty on a television screen who means something
to her community and country. My work in the beauty industry gives me
the opportunity to help women feel better about themselves. But I want
to be the reason for that impact, not just a treatment. I also want to
show South Africans that things are not necessarily as bad as they may
seem. There are many countries who are worse off than us and many
women worldwide who suffer. Mrs Africa is the ideal vehicle to do
it.”
That is why she isn’t even sure about what prizes there are
up for grabs in the pageant. “I honestly don’t know, I am just
honoured to be part. Should I be crowned Mrs Africa, it will be
one of my aims to see to it that women receive proper medical
attention, especially in rural and underprivileged areas. I am
also currently researching ways to help train and guide young
people to become future leaders, but my primary function is
to give back dignity in whatever form I can.”
Alaine, whose unusual name comes from her dad’s
misspelling on her birth certificate, has been married to Rudi
for four years. She says he and her mother, with whom she
has a very close relationship, are her biggest supporters and
cheerleaders.
“Rudi was surprised that I agreed to enter the competition,
but is behind me all the way. My mom is such a blessing, I
cannot imagine life without her,” she says.
Alaine has also started with a strict exercise regime in the
run up to the final. For the next few months, you will find her
in the gym, every morning and evening, strutting her stuff.
She has also just started a 12-week challenge.
Besides work, Alaine is a nature and animal lover and enjoys
time in the outdoors, but she can also lose herself in a good book.

Not many people know
that the quiet town Brits
boasts one of South Africa’s
biggest gymnastic clubs
with international standard
equipment, one of South
Africa’s best coaches
and is also the venue for
international courses. And
this is solely the work and
dream of Alta Lategan,
whose love for gymnastics
has created many a
champion gymnast.
I
t is not often that one meets a
person that oozes happiness and
contentment and whose high points
in life are life itself. Alta Lategan, one
of South Africa’s top gymnastic coaches,
is one of these people and talking to
her one realises why the gymnasts she
coaches reach such heights.
Alta has been named the South
African Gymnastics Federation’s Coach
of the Year in aerobic gymnastics for
the past six years and her team has
recently competed in the 2016 Aerobic
Gymnastics World Championships in
Korea. The team will now compete in
the 2017 World Games.
A coach for more than 30 years
and a former South African champion
herself, sport has been Alta’s life and
there is nothing else she wants to do.
“To me gymnastics is a wonderful
educational medium. It has so many
facets – it teaches perseverance,
discipline, how to overcome
disappointment and obstacles and
finally it gives the gymnast a feeling of
achievement. When the gymnast falls
off the beam, he or she has to get up
and back on and complete the exercise,
no matter what. Every exercise is a life
lesson and teaches life skills. It is a pure
sport where everybody is equal and

where you come from does not matter.
When a gymnast is on the beam, all that
matters are the movements and how
you do them. Money cannot buy talent.
There is no distinction in this sport,” she
says.
Over 50 South African champion
gymnasts have developed under her
coaching.
“To me it is not just about winning,
and I teach the young gymnasts this. For
me it is about developing the child’s full
potential.”
“I do what I love and I am
blessed for it!”
Alta started coaching gymnastics
while still a student. “I stopped
competing myself when I was 20 and
started coaching instead. I immediately
loved it.”
After finishing her studies she taught
physical education at a school in Brits
and started the Brits Gymnastics Club.
Now, 25 years later, over 200 gymnasts
are being coached here and the club
boasts equipment of international
standard and has hosted international
judging and coaching courses.
‘I am so proud of the club. I never
envisaged that it would get so big.”
While we talk, a little girl brings her
a small bunch of flowers and starts
telling Alta about her day. The love and
respect of her gymnasts are evident.
And her love and respect for them are
probably the most important factor
motivating them to do their best.
Alta travels all over the world with
her gymnasts and has visited about
15 countries in the last six years. “We
travel about three times a year and
although my being away is a bit of a
challenge for my family, they support
me wholeheartedly.”
Not one of her three children is
interested in gymnastics. “I think I
gave them an overdose,” she laughs.
To keep fit herself, Alta and her
husband do mountainbiking and she
has run three Comrades and cycled two
Argus races.
Her biggest achievement? “I really
cannot single out anything. My
gymnasts’ achievements are mine. My
‘moment’ is my life,” she laughs.
“I have never said no to a challenge.
I know the word ‘yes’ very well. I do
what I love and I am blessed for it.”

A voice of
Meyrand Roux of Meerhof mesmerised the coaches and public alike on stage in The
Voice SA on DStv. Although this up-and-coming blues and rock musician didn’t make it
past the first knockout rounds, he has won fans for life and his career seems set to reach
high notes.
N
ot a big fan of reality shows,
Meyrand, who has been
performing at clubs, pubs and
gigs to make his mark, was at
first a bit apprehensive about entering
The Voice SA. “But my wife and biggest
supporter, Mari-Louise or MJ as she is
known, kept nagging me to enter. So
after finishing a gig well after midnight,
I stood in the queue early morning
with thousands other hopefuls and
auditioned. About a month later I heard
that I had made it through
to the blind auditions,” says
the former salesperson and
tattoo artist who has been
called “an inked-up farm boy”
in national media.
Meyrand (29), a local
boytjie through and through,
who went to school in
Hartbeespoort before
matriculating at Brits High School,
started making music at the age of 15,
and is self-taught. “Music is my passion
and my dream is to make it big as a
musician and become respected for my
music. I feel I was born to be behind the
mic.” He plays the guitar and harmonica
and is also a songwriter, who hopes to
write for other famous musicians and
have his music heard far and wide.
But back to The Voice SA. “I cannot
even describe how nerve-wracking
those blind auditions were. I think the
last time I was this nervous was when I
was waiting for my wife at the altar, but
after a few seconds on stage I decided
to treat it as just another gig and
relaxed.”
And clearly the strategy worked.
Meyrand’s rendition of James Brown’s
“It’s A Man’s World” made Lira and
former school mate, popular Afrikaans
singer Bobby van Jaarsveld turn their
chairs within the first few lines.
Lira’s comment was: “Your voice is

pushing him through to the live shows
that were aired from April this year.
In the first live The Voice show,
Meyrand sang Rodriguez’s classic
“Sugarman”, which urged showhost
Lungile to exclaim: “My brother, you
are born for this!” and his coach, Lira
to swoon: “You are my sugarman!”
However, the competition was very stiff
and unfortunately Meyrand
was not saved for another live
performance, but he has not
regretted entering as things
have been looking up big
time for him.
“The show was very hard
work; the glitz and glamour
you see on the television
screen tell you nothing of
the hours we put in behind the scenes.
In the time leading up to the battle
rounds we worked from morning till
late at night, training, doing interviews,
learning how to perform and just
basically honing our musical skills
with the professionals. It was a great
experience. I learned so much about
performing, music and stage presence
and definitely walked off that stage a
better musician.”

- I didn’t expect an Afrikaans oke with
tattoos!”
Meyrand chose Lira as his coach. “She
has international experience and I know
I made the right decision,” says Meyrand.

Get a bead on
lampworking
Worldwide, glass beadmaking, or lampworking
is growing in popularity as a creative hobby.
Internationally-renowned Corina Tettinger of
the US and author of every beadmaker’s Bible,
Passing the Flame, recently visited South Africa to
teach techniques such as basic shaping, creating
patterns, poling, twisting and raking dots in
Pretoria. Get It caught up with her to learn more
about her burning passion.
What is glass beading or lampwork?
Lampwork, otherwise known as beadmaking,
is a type of glasswork where a torch or lamp is
used to melt glass. Once in a molten state, the
glass is formed by blowing and shaping with
tools and hand movements. It is also known as
flameworking or torchworking, as the modern
practice no longer uses oil-fuelled lamps.
When did you start doing lampwork?
It started by accident really, with a library book
on beads that triggered my interest. That was
about 15 years ago. My ex-husband bought me
some tools and I started out in our garage. After
I attended my first class, the instructor said I
had talent and should continue. I took a couple
more classes, but nowadays I am the one who
teaches others.

Winter tipples
What is it about beading that attracts
you?
I had done some work in clay and silver
before, but with beads there is instant
gratification. I am still fascinated by
the flame. You start off with a solid
substance; it melts and turns solid
again. You are able to control it and can
make the most beautiful things with
glass.
What inspires your designs?
The colours and patterns in nature
inspire most of my designs. Rainforest
beads and frogs count among my
favourite beads to make.
Can anyone do beading?
Yes, most people can learn the basics
in one day. You will quickly see if it is
for you. All you need is patience and
practice. A common mistake many
people make is to expect too much too
soon. It takes time to learn all the skills.
Start with the basics, master them and
build up from there.
What is the longest time you have
spent on one bead?
About two hours, with one hour’s
preparation beforehand.
Do you need special tools?
Yes, there are certain
tools that are essential for
shaping and finishing. I
use copper tools that are
specially made for me. You
can buy the basic tools from
bead shops or online.
Why do you teach and
how often do you travel
internationally?
Unfortunately it is not
possible to make a living
out of making and selling
beads alone, as there
is a huge gap between
what people see and are
prepared to pay, compared
to the amount of work
you put into each piece.
I do about six to seven
workshops annually, one
of which is at an overseas
destination. I only teach
small groups of maximum
five people at a time.

concern in South Africa
and all over the world.
Container gardening is
not only water-wise,
but also less labourintensive and you can
have a garden in an
instant!
C
ontainer gardening is not
just fun, the possibilities are
endless—all you need is some
imagination, pots, potting soil,
plants and fertiliser. It is less labourintensive than tending to a garden and
you can let your creativity run free with
potted plants — minus all the weeding.
There are however a few things
you should consider before you start
planting.

Assess Your sun
The first thing you should do is
determine how much direct sun
your containers will get. This will
determine what you plant in them.
Making sure a plant has the amount
of sun it requires to thrive is critical
for any container garden.
Choose A ContAiner
KeeP them Alive
Truly anything at all can be turned
into a container. The more soil there
is, the easier nutrients and water are
retained and delivered to your plants
and the less frequently you will have
to water. Small pots dry out really fast.
When choosing a container, make sure
it has enough drainage or that you can
add drainage holes.
Choose PlAnts
The size of the pot plays an
important role. Choose plants that are
in proportion to your pot. Try to have at
least one plant that is at least as tall as
the pot it is in. Short plants look good
in a wide, shallow container.
If your area gets at least six hours of
direct sun, you can choose plants for
“full sun.”
If your area gets three to six hours of
direct sun each day, choose plants for
“partial sun/partial shade.”
If your area gets less than three
hours of direct sun each day, choose
plants for, “shade.”
How much care am I willing to give?
If you do not want to spend time in
the garden on a daily basis, rather look
for easy care plants that are drought
tolerant. You nursery will advise you.
as in its nursery pot. Also ensure there
are no air pockets and your plant’s roots
are surrounded by soil. Roots in an air
pocket will dry out and the plant will
die. Feel around the plant and stuff
soil into any holes you feel. Water after
planting to settle the soil. Fill in any
holes or depressions with extra soil.
After establishing your container
garden, keep your plants alive! You can
kill plants with too much or too little
water. As a rule, your soil should be kept
damp, not wet. To determine this, stick
your finger into the soil. down to the
second knuckle. If your soil feels moist,
you probably should wait to water.
Be sure to water slowly and make
sure the water is going to your plant’s
roots and does not run down the sides
between the pot and the soil. Water
until it starts to run out the bottom of
your container.
Some plants get all stressed out if
you let them dry out and then water
them. There are others that don’t mind
at all. You can also solve this problem
by either using self-watering pots or an
automatic drip irrigation system.
Container gardening is a very
rewarding activity and ideal for
impatient gardeners who want instant
results.

PlAnting your gArden
There are two main things to know
when actually planting. Make sure the
plant sits at the same level in the soil
Consider growing a vertical vegetable garden in
containers. You can easily produce the same amount of
fresh vegetables without taking up excess space. A vertical
vegetable garden is easy to create. You can create one using
shelves, hanging baskets, or trellises.
The amount of sunlight will be the greatest factor in
determining which plants will thrive. Leafy vegetables like
lettuce, cabbage, and greens do well with limited sunlight,
making them good choices for shady areas. If you have
an abundance of sun, plant tomatoes, peppers, potatoes,
beans, carrots, and radishes.
Even vine crops, such as squash, pumpkins, and
cucumbers can be grown as long as the container is deep
enough to accommodate them and proper staking is
available. Fill containers with peat moss and a suitable
potting mix amended with compost or manure.

tasked with investigating, observing
and documenting disappearing

Essential Africa
“There’s always that familiar nervous
feeling of anticipation at the beginning
of a new adventure. The challenges
of visas, money, equipment, first aid,
basic food supplies, reference books
and maps, letters of authority, GPS,
tents, pots and pans, tools, binoculars,
cameras, humanitarian supplies – the
list seems endless. But most important
is a sense of humour, a passion for
Mama Africa and that crazy Zen of
travel.”
One of the biggest pitfalls of travel
into Africa, according to Kingsley, is an
attitude of arrogance or superiority.

country you are travelling in. Do as
much research about your destination

frustration on locals who don’t deserve
it. Remember that old saying, the Swiss

Kingsley says he and his team never
bribe. “We always carry a few soccer
balls, soccer magazines and T-shirts
with us. We have had many favours
done on the back of the goodwill we
have ‘bought’ with something as simple
as a mosquito net
or a ball.”

Kingsley advises that it helps to
have a purpose for your journey and
to give it a name. “That helps a lot
with planning, packing and charting
your route.”

technology, such as cellphones,
satellite and GPS tracking, the new
colonisation with Chinese moving
into many African countries and
improvements to road infrastructure,
the time to rough it may soon be
something of the past, so best you
start planning your African adventure
now.
