The scheme transforms the former convent into a ‘state of the art’ facility. Our work included a new access road, a comprehensive refurbishment including windows, doors and curtain walling, M & E services including a new lift together with, classrooms, cloakrooms, external works and new incoming services. Fundamental to the design was consideration for the Environment with the project achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’. Sustainable elements of the design included a biomass boiler and rainwater recycling. Project Duration & Value 12 months , £6 million Project Duration & Value 6 months, £2.5 million Awards Building Excellence Award for Sustainability - Winner Borders College, Galashiels Durham University, Durham The works at Borders College was part of the redevelopment at Netherdale Campus in Galashiels. The works comprised an extension to form a new Technology Building and partial refurbishment/repair of an existing building. The works at Durham University involved a full refurbishment of the Chemistry Lab. As well as employing traditional building techniques we also incorporated and managed specialist sub contractors to ensure a supply and fit of specialist lab furniture. Works undertaken included, groundworks, roofing, walls, ceilings, internal partitions, mechanical and electrical installations, security/communication systems and decoration. Project Duration & Value 4 months, £1 million Project Duration & Value 5 months, £1.3 million RB Green Lecture Theatre, Newcastle University Huddersfield University, Huddersfield Works included the removal and replacement of the existing tiered seating. Adaptations to the concrete seating/retaining structure, adaptations to rooms, suspended ceilings, refurbishment of WC’s, DDA access, lighting installation and improved M&E services. The works were undertaken in a ‘live’ environment with adjacent Campus buildings being used throughout. The refurbishment of levels 1, 2 and 3 of the Central Services Building provides an up to date library and IT facilities. The work comprised the stripping out of the building back to the shell with substantial alterations to the M & E services. The Client required that all works were completed within the University’s summer break. “they completed the works on time and to budget. High quality fittings include bespoke joinery, desks, benching and curved glazed screens with bespoke manifestations. Other works included new ceilings and bulkheads, floor coverings and redecoration throughout. Project Duration & Value 14 weeks, £650,000 Project Duration & Value 5 months, £830,000 Dame Allens Primary School, Newcastle Construction Skills Centre, Cumbria We were appointed to construct a new state of the art sustainable Nursery and Junior School for 300 pupils to promote education, sport and play on the derelict Victorian Hunter’s Moor Hospital Site in Newcastle. The Construction Skills Centre is a purpose built facility developed to host the entire construction curriculum previously dispersed around the College facility. The new building will cater for 600 students who will be studying Mechanical, Welding, Plumbing, Joinery, Bricklaying and Electrical courses. It has been designed with a host of green features, including rain water harvesting for flushing toilets and solar panels for hot water. Coloured aluminium composite cladding was chosen to enhance the appearance of the building. Project Duration & Value 11 months, £3.8 million The building has been constructed to BREEAM ‘very good’ standard and incorporates solar photovoltaics, air source heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and a host of other energy efficient measures such as daylight linking for internal lighting and LED lights. Project Duration & Value 9 months, £5.7 million case studies: commercial build RSPB Saltholme, Billingham Shilbottle Community Centre, Shilbottle The Award Winning RSPB Wildlife Reserve and Discovery Park is the largest wetland creation project in the North of England and comprises a steel frame with curtain walling and timber clad atrium complete with extensive external works including miscellaneous minor buildings situated around a network of ponds and wetland areas. The works comprised the construction of a new community building which re-houses facilities which were accommodated in an existing welfare hall that was destroyed in a fire in 2008. The scheme achieved a BREEAM rating of Excellent and was awarded both the RICS Tourism and Leisure Award 2010 and the Constructing Excellence Sustainability Award. The accommodation includes multi-use rooms, games rooms, changing room facilities, referees changing rooms, main hall, kitchen, male and female toilets and a disabled toilet facility. We also constructed a new storage shed. Project Duration & Value 12 months, £4 million Project Duration & Value 10 months, £900,000 Awards RICS Project of the Year 2010 - Winner Warehouse Facility, Newburnhaugh Benfield Pop Up Garage, Sunderland This was the fit out of an existing warehouse to provide office and training facilities involving the construction of a new mezzanine floor within the existing structure on new foundations and supported with steelwork. This project provided Benfield Motors with a temporary showroom, valet bays, sales area and 10 bay workshop which was completed within the 9 week programme specified by the client. The internal accommodation was divided using a specialist glazed partitioning system complete with integral blinds. These formed the corridors, IT Suite, toilets, training and conference rooms, managers office, meeting room, server room, locker area and reception facility. A new stainless steel staircase was installed with glazed balustrades. The showroom was constructed using cladding materials to form the external walls and an inflatable roof which provides insulation for the building. This building is fully re-useable and will be taken down once the new permanent showroom is complete. It can then be transported to a new site for use. Project Duration & Value Project Duration & Value 9 weeks, £990,000 16 weeks, £1.16 million Cell C, Newcastle Great Park VA Tech Offices, South Tyneside Cell C involved the design and build of 2 office units, each with 60,000 sq.ft floorspace at Newcastle Great Park. Build consists of; structural steel frame with curtain walling and roof cladding; raised floors including open plan; car parking and external lighting. The works also include extensive infrastructure and the construction of access roads. This project was for the construction of a new office headquarters for VA Tech Transmission and Distribution Limited, at Monkton South Business Park, Hebburn in South Tyneside. The contract comprised the construction of 3,800 m² (40,900 sq ft) purpose-built, high quality, air conditioned offices on the fully-serviced site of 1.46 hectares (3.6 acres), part of the reclaimed Monkton Coke Works. Project Duration & Value 9 months, £8.5 million Project Duration & Value 8 months, £3.2 million Awards Building Landmark Award - Commended Haymarket Bus Station, Newcastle Metromail, Seaham Since it’s initial construction the roof has been the subject to a number of glass failures. To protect the public from the possible explosive failure of the glass Newcastle City Council appointed us as Principal Contractor to replace the roof and to bring the appearance of the Bus Station to be comparable to that of the new Eldon Square Bus Station. The internal fit out to an existing warehouse/office facility was completed to improve office and welfare arrangements, provide better access into the facility and provision of improved vehicle parking. A two storey office extension, generator plant room and laser print room were constructed inside the existing factory. The roofing works were carried out in four phases, where the bus stances associated with these phases were closed during the works. Safe bus and pedestrian access past the works was maintained through the Bus Station at all times. Works were undertaken over a seven day working week and included night-time working for specific phases of work. Project Duration & Value 16 weeks, £670,000 The ground floor office extension housed toilets, meeting room and staff canteen with the first floor being an open plan office with 7 singular offices and board room. We created a floor to ceiling wall containing roller shutters which created a delivery area and allowed the closure of the external doors whilst unloading occurred. Project Duration & Value 14 weeks, £1.0 million case studies: commercial & historical Evolution Business Centre, Northallerton Stolzle Flaconnage, Knottingley A build development in Northallerton comprising of 28 separate start up offices. The work is to a high standard including oak joinery and has been designed with an atrium concept to provide light and natural ventilation to both the offices and circulation areas. The works had a high M & E content in order to achieve the required BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’, The works consisted of demolition works to accommodate the new production facilities and the Customer Centre. Elevation enhancements to the existing retained building were undertaken, along with the refurbishment of the existing Mould Shop and an extension to their production facility. External works consisted of a yard extension, car parking, and landscaping. Project Duration & Value 9 months, £2.2 million Project Duration & Value 7 months, £2.55 million Awards Yorkshire & Humber Construction Value Award - Winner St Marys Cathedral, Newcastle Stanley Bus Station, Co.Durham The Cathedral is a Grade 1 listed Building. We were contracted to replace the floor tiling with hand made tiles, installation of underfloor heating, carry out intricate stone carvings, replacement of mechanical installation, installation of a new hearing loop system and sound system and carry out the restoration of the sanctuary furniture. This project, for Derwentside District Council, was for the construction of a new Bus Station in Stanley, County Durham. The project is part of an innovative Public transport hub. The Bus Station is of steel framed construction, it incorporates energy generating photovoltaic cells and there are extensive paved areas to accommodate bus parking and movements. Project Duration & Value 5 months, £950,000 Project Duration & Value 8 months, £2.4 million Awards County Durham Environmental Award - Winner Graves Trust, Sheffield Cringletie House, Peebles This single storey visitors centre in Ecclesall Woods was constructed with the extensive use of timber to act as a showcase for the sustainable timber operations within the Site. The main structural elements were formed from timber, including some engineered curved structural laminated timber beams. The Cringletie House refurbishment was undertaken during partial closure of the building and carefully managed to cause minimum disruption to hotel guests and the operation of the business. The work was completed to the highest of standards befitting an 18th Century building. Work was undertaken in bedrooms , function rooms and public areas. The scope of works included electrical rewiring, replacement heating system, decorative lighting and a high quality period decorative finish. The roof comprised high performance single ply polymer flat roofing and a feature curved roof clad with a standing seam zinc covering. Mechanical and Electrical provision included underfloor heating and mechanical ventilation along with a biomass solid fuel boiler with tanks for storage of hot water. Project Duration & Value 5 months, £0.7 million Project Duration & Value 6 months, £330,000 Awards RICS Pro Yorkshire Community Benefit Award - Winner Live Theatre, Newcastle St Michaels and All Angels Church, Newburn The work to Live Theatre was the final phase of the redevelopment and refurbishment. The work included the removal of the existing roof to the rear yard and the creation of a new four storey glazed stair and lift tower. The site is just off the busy Quayside and the existing buildings are all listed. The excavation works and foundations were subject to Archaeological inspections. Great care had to be taken during the construction of the structure not to cause damage to the adjacent listed buildings. Restorative repairs involved working in a very innovative manner. The whole church was scaffolded, both internally and externally and structural repairs were needed to make the building safe. The roof was replaced with new roof trusses copied from the one remaining truss using traditional methods of construction. Floors were replaced and a new steeple was constructed on top of the bell tower. Two years and two days after the fire, the church was returned to its former glory. The project was also commended for both the I.C.E and the RICS Renaissance Awards. Project Duration & Value 10 months, £3.6 million Project Duration & Value 24 months, £2 million Awards RICS North East Renaissance Award - Winner Awards Constructing Excellence Heritage Award - Winner case studies: historical Alderman Fenwick’s House, Newcastle Eagle & Exchange Buildings, Sunderland This was the structural and internal repairs to two adjoining Grade 1 listed buildings. Our craftsmen used the original materials as much as possible. The house was refurbished using traditional building methods including using horse hair plaster on riven laths to restore the plaster finishes. The oak staircase was dismantled, repaired and refixed using the existing oak balusters. The carpets were specially designed and weaved to ensure that it would be similar to the original carpet dating back to 1756 Works to the Exchange Buildings included the development of an infill extension and improved accessibility including substantial repairs, restoration and refurbishment. Works on the former Eagle Tavern concentrated on restoring the historic features of the building including the careful dismantling and rebuilding of its distinctive front elevation and the re-creation of the Eagle. Funds were provided from Heritage Lottery. Project Duration & Value 11 months, £1.5 million Project Duration & Value 12 months, £2.7 million Gateshead Library, Gateshead Our Lady of St Cuthberts Church, Prudhoe The works comprised the refurbishment and extension of the existing Grade II listed building. In addition to the new library, the re-development creates a building which provides the local community with additional facilities including multi-use areas, new learning facilities and a new café. The works to this Grade II listed church was a restoration project and included the total renewal of the internal Sanctuary, spalled limestone, ashlar, adaptation of the baptismal font, cleaning of the terrazzo and parquet flooring, limewashing and decoration of the whole interior of the church, new bespoke furniture to the Sanctuary and Nave, replacement heating and lighting installation, replacement lead and slate roofing including decorative ridge, re-pointing and DDA compliance works, including substantial external terrace works. Funds to carry out the works were secured from the Big Lottery Community Libraries Programme. The works were carried out in 3 phases and the library was operational throughout. Protection measures and monitoring was implemented to ensure no risk to the public, staff or operatives. Project Duration & Value 14 months, £1.7 million Project Duration & Value 5 months, £490,000 Wren Nest Mill, Glossop The Alan Shearer Centre, Newcastle The refurbishment works consisted of floor repairs, lift shaft repairs, lift car replacements, staircase repairs, and replacement of the salvaged windows at lower levels. Using a ‘line of balance’ programming and monitoring system, all the trades were effectively and efficiently coordinated, ensuring that completed areas and apartments could be locked off, whereby closing the project down systematically. The project comprised of internal alterations, including formation of bedrooms, bathrooms, sensory rooms, reception, cafe/internet & ancillary areas. Additional works included a new hydro therapy pool and lift . All works where of sensitive nature to provide a disabled care facility. Project Duration & Value 8 months , £1 million Project Duration & Value 10 months, £3.6 million Beamish Museum, Stanley Stewart Park, Middlesbrough The building was constructed using traditional methods. The team was denied the use of cranes on site to lift the timber trusses. Hence vital supports had to be designed with this in mind and the king post truss had to be assembled piece by piece. Although new, the building had to appear to be 100 years old. The bricks were a combination of salvaged glazed bricks and an Old Victorian Pressed Brick laid using a traditional mortar incorporating coal dust. An old arcade was also salvaged and included into the scheme together with sourced cast iron windows. While re-creating an old building, the project incorporated ground source heat pumps servicing underfloor heating. Project Duration & Value 8 months, £833,000 The project involved the restoration and conversion of the existing Grade II Listed Victorian estate buildings and surrounding courtyards. The Park once housed the birth place of the explorer Captain Cook and covers over 112 acres. The once council offices and depot have now been converted, restored and upgraded for a range of public uses, including offices, a vocational training base, a community education centre and café. The works also included the construction of a contemporary visitor centre extension. Project Duration & Value 12 months, £3.95 million Awards RICS North East Building Conservation Award - Winner case studies: retail & leisure Bannatyne Hotel, Durham Durham County Cricket Club, Durham This project comprised the construction and fit out of a new 60 bed hotel for the successful Bannatyne Group in the very popular business and tourist location of Durham City. The hotel was built using modern methods of construction and high specification fittings, and was designed with a high level of environmental consideration. The contract was a design and build project, to alter the existing facility and to provide an additional 1600 seats over two stands, including provision of new infrastructure and associated external paved amenity areas. Works were carried out within the closed season to avoid the clash with any match fixtures. Project Duration & Value 9 months, £1.8 million 6 months, £1.6 million Kentucky Fried Chicken Silverlink Restaurant, Newcastle Various projects with KFC have been undertaken, involving construction of steelwork and cladded shell as well as associated external works for new Drive Thru Outlets. The scheme was the design and construction of two new steel framed restaurant units each with a gross floor area of 3,200 sq ft. Each unit comprised monopitched roofs finished with profiled steel cladding and fully glazed front elevations. Works comprised; earthworks, foundations and superstructure construction; car park construction; paving and landscaping works; and access tie-in to existing road system and new off site sewer system. In addition to the delivery of the primary elements of the projects, we were responsible for the building fit-out, and worked in partnership with Jephson’s shopfitters to achieve completion 2 weeks ahead of programme. Project Duration & Value 8 months, £0.6 million per scheme Project Duration & Value The substructure was traditional foundations and ground bearing concrete powerfloated slabs. Externally the car park was altered to suit new parking arrangements and new landscaping was provided. The fit out of the restaurants for Nandos and Bella Italia was carried out by others Project Duration & Value 4 months, £803,000 Glass Centre, Sunderland Quorum Business Park, Newcastle Works included the fit out and refurbishment of the existing National Glass Centre building in Sunderland, situated next to St Peters campus. This was the design and construction of a retail parade, office space including fit out, and detached single storey restaurant unit, all associated external works, external lighting, services and ancillary works required to provide a complete and habitable development. The works comprised a full strip out and refurbishment including the formation of structural openings and full M&E installation. We installed suspended plasterboard ceilings and all finishes including floor coverings and decoration. We installed new revolving doors, information screens, a reception with a purpose build counter, balcony display cases, internal pavilions, full graphics and projected images. Project Duration & Value 4 months, £1.3 million The buildings were constructed using a steel frame with curtain walling and rendered masonry or rain screen cladding. A ‘Sarnafil’ single membrane roof was chosen due to its versatility. The internal fit out of the office development provided office space, board rooms, open plan office space, welfare areas and included Mechanical and Electrical installations aswell as a new car park. Project Duration & Value 5 months, £1.1 million Seaham North Dock, Seaham Morrisons Supermarket, Stockton-on-Tees This was a BREEAM Excellent Building for 12 business units, a café and a water sports centre with associated hard landscaping which was part of the £3million first phase regeneration works. Morrisons Supermarket involved refurbishment and remodelling of an existing store. Works involved replacement of all existing chillers with new technology, including the total replacement of all plant room equipment. All existing plant and equipment remained in a temporary working state to ensure retail sales of chilled and frozen foods were totally unaffected. The works included the installation of anti-surge hydraulic lock gates and a wave screen to ensure that water levels are managed; the creation of a pontoon marina for small leisure craft; and improvements to the current slipway. The dock gate works required the installation of a new temporary cofferdam followed by grouting works to the masonry walls to prevent sea water ingress. Project Duration & Value 21 months, £3.13 million Total refurbishment of seperate areas involved night working and hygenic hoardings to ensure complete segregation from food departments and also extensions to the sales hall, enterance and check out mall. The scheme involved eight seperate phases and included the Christmas construction shut down period. The project was awarded the ‘‘Green End User of the Year’’ award as the supermarket incorporated a CO2 cooling system. Project Duration & Value 7 months, £2.4 million case studies: care & health Westcliffe Medical Centre, Shipley Newcross Care Home, Wolverhampton This was the refurbishment of a live medical centre split into three phases to avoid disruption to the staff and users. This was the design and construction of a 62 bed care home with accomodation over two and a half floors, which offers residential, respite and dementia care. The construction was traditional brick/block construction with rendered panels and incorporates a bold architectural rotunda feature. Phase one involved works to the existing store and included works for all trades including overboarding the existing facing brickwork to eliminate dust in these areas. Phase Two included works to the nurse’s room to include phlebotomy and a remodelled nurse’s and treatment room. Phase Three involved remodelling the reception area including the installation of a new reception desk. Project Duration & Value 10 weeks, £175,000 As the scheme was in a high profile town centre site, a café and meeting rooms were incorporated into the scheme for the use of the general public. Project Duration & Value 12 months, £3.16 million Middlehaven Gateway, Middlesbrough Elm Bank Care Home, Kettering This project is a joint development between Whickham Villa and Spirit which will provide a new rehabilitation centre consisting of residential, therapeutic and rehabilitation facilities, along with community facilities and office spaces. This was the design and construction of a 105 bed care home with accommodation over three floors. The compact site is in a residential location in Kettering, fronting a busy road with adjacent school. This is a mixed care facility which offers nursing and dementia care, as well as incorporating specialist rehabilitation suites. It will be the only one of its kind in the UK that consists of a residential ‘step forward’ rehabilitation facility, a health and wellbeing centre and a range of transitional and supported living options. The project will see the creation of more than 100 jobs and around £10m of investment. Project Duration & Value 14 months, £7.2 million The building design was developed to incorporate an existing grade II listed building, with the surrounding extension designed in keeping with the Victorian style villa and built as a series of glazed link blocks. Project Duration & Value 19 months, £5.6 million Sunderland Royal Hospital ICCU, Sunderland Mastin Moor, Turning Point We were Principle Contractor for the construction of three forty bed modular wards and the construction of a new high level link corridor with a 7 storey lift & stair tower, extensive plant room and offices, with over 120 operatives on site. Construction of a secure facility to provide rehabilitation services for people with complex needs. Development of 2 buildings, 1 Female and 1 Male, both consisting of 14 independent living quarters. Health and Safety was of utmost importance due to the restricted logistics of the site in a live hospital. We had to be mindful as patients were close by. We used sealed hoarding around works so that no dust could escape and pollute the area. Project Duration & Value 13 months, £15 million The project comprised of extensive excavations with major retaining walls allowing for a change in levels, a new drainage scheme linked to the main sewer and all new incoming services. The structure consists of a ring beam footing block and beam floors incorporating a Radon gas membrane. The traditional timber truss roof is over lined with ply wood and a zinc roof covering with the installation of specified roof lights. The building also has two internal hydraulic lifts. Project Duration & Value 15 months, £4.4 million Nuffield Hospital (Phases 1&2), Newcastle Grindon Mews, Sunderland Refurbishment works to the existing hospital were phased through wards and departments to include replacement of windows, redecoration to internal spaces, enhanced mechanical & electrical facilities and external works. As well as working in a live hospital environment, there was other specialised contract work being carried out concurrently. Preventative measures to control invasive Aspergillosis were established using portable HEPA filter air purifiers, airtight plastic and dry wall barriers around the construction areas, redirection of construction traffic away from patient areas, regular removal of construction debris from the site in sealed containers or at least covered by a damp cloth. This purpose built facility was developed to deliver focussed specialist social care for Sunderland City Council. It provides support to up to 28 adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities and up to 15 adults with high dependency physical needs. Every aspect of the environment required careful consideration including flooring, textures, heating, lighting, and sound, colours. Project Duration & Value 10 months, £4 million Accessibility was a key consideration, therefore the music, sound beam, sensory and bathrooms required XY hoists. There was a requirement for the facility to maintain a constant and even ambient temperature in all user areas, especially to the floors. A passive ventilation was supplemented by mechanical and comfort cooling.
