November 2013 Company Round Ups Find out what’s been going on over the last year at Esh Group Caroline in India Read all about Caroline Beaver’s trip to India for WaterAid Esh Added Value Find out how we engage with communities, schools & prisons KALEIDOSCOPE Kaleidoscope - Esh Group Welcome Our hard work over the last 5-6 years of difficult times for the construction industry is starting to pay dividends for Esh Group. Some of the key achievements are: Our contracting workload is growing at long last and we can see improved profitability coming through. Dunelm Homes is achieving it’s targets with the full support of it’s funders. All employees should be proud of the contribution they are making towards our success. We, as Directors appreciate your efforts and loyalty through difficult times and we are looking to add value not just to the communities we work in but also to employees and shareholders (many of whom are employees). The quality of work produced across the Group is consistently very good. We are looking forward to enhancing staff benefits and creating new communication channels which will keep pace with our success. The focus as set out in our 5 year plan of managing cash, costs, growth and people has, and still is, serving us well. There is one thing for certain: Esh Group will always be looking for continuous improvement across its now wider area of operations. The Business has a strong cash position and a healthy balance sheet to match. Alongside these achievements is our work in the Community, in particular the work we do with employability in schools across Cumbria, North East and Yorkshire, which all adds to the Esh proposition. Put all this together and you can understand why a Senior Director from a National Accountancy Practice recently paid Esh Group a compliment by referring to it as an “Institution” in the North East. 2 We now want to make sure we replicate this approach in Cumbria, in Yorkshire and, for that matter, any area we work in going forward. Our regional growth is continuing throughout Yorkshire and Cumbria as is our market share. The green shoots of recovery, which began in the housing sector towards the end of 2012, have continued and are beginning to show some improvements across our other sectors of work. Housing within the North East has continued to improve, with all of the major developers undertaking works throughout the Region. We have drawn upon the strength of relationships to help us to continue to grow our presence within the Yorkshire Region, by securing works with several house builders within the area. Works with our framework partners remain strong. Blue chip clients such as Northumbrian Water, Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency are key to our growth in the North of England and into new markets. In mid 2013 we received the good news that we had been successful with our submission to the Northern Minor Frameworks for the Environment Agency, with operational areas covering the North East, Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancashire. Lot 2 and Lot 4 for Northumbrian Water continue to present opportunities. Although this market place remains competitive, our proven delivery record and understanding of the client’s needs continues to stand us in good stead. The hard work and close working relationships developed with Yorkshire Water has allowed us to integrate their change to shift patterns and delivery within our current operations. Traditional Civil Engineering works through Consultants and Local Authorities remains competitive, with this sector still feeling the full effects of the government’s spending cuts. We are beginning to see initial signs that recovery in this sector will take place in 2014/15. Our position in the market remains strong and signs of improvements have been seen through our YorCivil Framework and relationships in the market place. Securing work continues to be tough, with margins remaining very low. However, the hard work before, during and post construction has positioned the business in good shape as we look to develop new sectors and grow geo-graphical market share throughout 2014 and beyond. 2013 has seen EPS experience a more upward beat to work levels, with tenders received in house at a record level. We have priced well over 150 million pounds worth of projects so far this year, which is a good sign that the social housing market is starting to move positively. While conditions still remain competitive, we have secured our fair share of the opportunities available. Early in the new year we won several schemes for new clients in the Yorkshire Region these schemes include: Home Group new build houses at Scowerdons in Sheffield (£2.8m); Leeds & Yorkshire Housing Association new and refurbished accommodation at St Ann’s, Burley in Leeds (£1.6m); Wakefield District Housing new houses at Verners Street in Wakefield (£1.7m); Broadacres Housing new homes at Water Lane in York (£1.6m); and Guinness Housing three schemes, totalling £1.6m. 3 Kaleidoscope - Esh Group In the North East Region, we were delighted to secure East Durham Homes Decent Homes work, worth approximately £8m over two years. We are continuing to secure additional refurbishment work with schemes for Home Group, replacing kitchens at Deaf Hill; re roofing works for Endeavour Housing and our ongoing planned maintenance works with Anchor Trust. Our recent scheme for Hanover Housing at Hanover Point, to improve the thermal efficiency of the building with retrofit solutions, was shortlisted for a retrofit award. At the same time, we are continuing to deliver the 497 new build units funded by the HCA Grant we secured in 2011, with key schemes such as Cockerton and Rosewood Grange now on site. We will, over the next 18 months, handover 1,000 new properties to landlords. Our success continues over in Cumbria through our ongoing Development Framework with Two Castles HA on sites at Guldrey Lane and Windermere Road in Kendal. Our partnership with Two Castles, under the banner of Hadrian Developments was recognised at the Constructing Excellence Awards. We were Highly Commended in the Integration and Collaborative Working Category. We also have schemes with Home Group at Calder Club and Pow Beck, in Whitehaven, and in Preston. We are working with Riverside Group at Arneside Close and Borland Avenue, in Carlisle, and we will be carrying out external works for South Lakes Housing on an internal programme to start later in the year. 2013 is proving to be a good year for Esh Build across all three Operational Regions. In the North East, we have completed the refurbishment and extension of Teesville Primary School with very contemporary design and at Pelton we delivered a new Primary Care Centre. The Pelton Project included the full fit out of both the Surgery and the Library. Another exceptional scheme was the fit out and refurbishment of the National Glass Centre, for the University of Sunderland, which was recently shortlisted for Best UK Tourism Experience. On Teesside the new rehabilitation facility at Middlehaven, for Keiro, is due for handover at the end of October. The facility will be the only one of its kind in the UK that consists of a Residential ‘Step Forward’ Rehabilitation Facility, a Health and Wellbeing Centre for the whole community and a range of Transitional and Supported Living Options. The Project will see the creation of more than 100 jobs and around £10m of investment. Our works at Silverlink Retail Park are ongoing delivering two new restaurant facilities. In Middlesbrough, we are building a new Medical Centre in Tenants Street, at Newcastle International Airport we are negotiating further works and we continue to deliver new KFC outlets across the UK. Our Leeds Office has successfully handed over at the Lateral Building in Leeds and has completed the conversion of the Algernon Firth Building. Exciting new schemes which have recently started on site include: the £1m refurbishment of the old Tetley Brewery Headquarters in Leeds to provide a new Centre for Contemporary Art and Learning. ‘The Tetley’ will create this new facility for the city with a Gallery and Learning/ Community Spaces on ground, first and second floors, alongside further refurbishments to Event, Retail and Cafe areas. In addition, we are delivering a £8m expansion of Tennants Auctioneers Centre in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, to create new facilities that will support further growth. In Cumbria, we handed over the fantastic Construction Skills Centre at Lilyhall, Workington and we have commenced work on a new multi pound Office and Factory for Tritech in Ulverston. At Summergrove Hotel & Conference Centre in Moor Row, Whitehaven, we are carrying out refurbishment and alteration works to create both catered and Self Catered Student Type Accommodation with Seminar Rooms and an Amenity block for Britains Energy Coast. 4 The Facilities Services market continues to be very challenging but we have performed well in 2013, achieving strategic targets in terms of turnover and profit. This performance is testimony to the commitment, enthusiasm and hard work of the Staff & Operatives. We thank them for their efforts and continued support into 2014 & beyond. During the latter part of the year, we streamlined our branding to Esh Facilities. We continue to diversify into new markets with the implementation of our Facilities Management Division to compliment our Facilities Services provision. This has resulted in the award of a TFM (Total Facilities Management) contract for Duco Technip, where we are responsible for soft services including cleaning and security, in addition to hard services provision. The Business Development Team continues to strive to deliver our Strategic Plan and enter into new market sectors. Other new contracts include: Social Housing Public Authority • Fusion 21 – Electrical Installations and Fire Life Safety Framework • Cumbria County Council - has awarded us a 3 year measured term contract with an option to extend by a further 2 years •L eeds Federated Housing Association – Fire Risk Assessment Works to 225 properties, valued at £1.6m •N orthumberland County Council & Northumbria Police Authority have awarded us further extensions to our contracts, demonstrating our continued strong performance • ISOS - Fire Risk Assessment Works to a variety of buildings We have expanded our position in the social housing market by being awarded the following Contracts: •M elton Mowbray Borough Council – Electrical Fixed Wire Testing, Electrical Remedial Works and Re-wiring, valued at £0.25m Health & Education We have expanded our position in these markets having been awarded the following Contracts: •W e have expanded our delivery for South Tyneside College by being awarded contracts with Sunderland College, Hartlepool Sixth Form College and Tyne Metropolitan College •S heffield Hallam University – we have successfully expanded our offering to include Mechanical and Electrical Installations in addition to Fabric Installations already secured •U niversity of Newcastle – successfully awarded 3 year minor works framework •P riory Care – we have carried out a variety of works We are delivering a £1 million Whole Building Risk Assessment Works Programme nationally for Barclays Plc. 5 Kaleidoscope - Esh Group First of all, we would like to welcome Tricia Mullen to the Team, Tricia has taken on the role of Esh Training Solutions (ETS) Training Manager following Julie Baker leaving the company. Tricia is joined by Lisa Collins and Julie Turnbull who will support her in their roles as Training Coordinators. Since the beginning of 2013, we have delivered training to over 900 employees and sub contractors. Staff development remains high on our agenda and results from PDRs will inform and shape future training strategies. There has been over £18,000 grant retrieval for Esh Construction trainees, year to date. As business continues to grow, we will ensure all mandatory training requirements of Esh Group Companies are fulfilled. In addition, we will be increasing the number of apprenticeships and trainees across group companies. There are some exciting initiatives underway with the Added Value Team whereby we can link together and identify potential apprentices from an early stage. This will provide another recruitment channel and help ensure we are getting the best people we can. As ETS works more closely with group companies it is becoming more involved in the management and delivery of Training and Recruitment Targets (TRTs) within some of their contracts. For example, the programme that has been devised for Riverside Housing in Cumbria has been accepted as a Sector Based Academy with Job Centre Plus. Other organisations we have worked with so far this year include: South Lakes Housing; Carlisle Riverside Housing; Lakes College West Cumbria; South Tyneside Council; Home Group; and North East Procurement. We are aware that the Public Sector Equality Duty is increasingly rigorous when evaluating evidence of equality & diversity in supply chains. Esh Construction has responded to this challenge by working towards a specific equality framework for construction, called ConstructED. Two employees are undertaking formal accreditation for equality and on line training will be provided to employees to raise awareness and understanding. It is our intention to share our experience/best practice with our supply chains. In 2013, we are pleased to report that both Fencing and Landscaping are moving from strength to strength. On 1st January, Jim Bates was appointed Managing Director. We had previously appointed a new Landscaping Operations Manager, Paul Crowe, who has been tasked with realising the potential within the Landscaping side of our business. We continue to honour our long term relationships and we have also entered into new client based relationships, as well as building bridges with clients of old. We have maintained clients such as Three Rivers Housing Association, securing a further four years contract in early 2013. Housing Hartlepool, Huntsman Corporation, The Metro Centre and Sunderland University have continued to utilise our services. We are proud to announce that our grounds maintenance team won a Gold Award of Merit from Northumbria in Bloom as a result of work for Sunderland University. New contracts and clients have been added throughout 2013, including the grounds maintenance and sports pitch care services to six schools in North Newcastle for Lend Lease. Other similar contracts and services are now being provided directly to Hurworth School in Darlington and Sunningdale School in Sunderland. The soft and hard landscaping construction elements of the business are being continually expanded and works have been secured on a number of projects including, Wide Open SUDS Scheme, Wellfield School, Auckland Play Area, Northumberland Business Park and a number of new housing developments. The business has been successful in new house building ventures throughout the North East and has also achieved success with ventures into Yorkshire & Humberside. Regeneration projects are a big part of our service and we have carried out numerous projects for clients such as, Kier- North Tyneside, Railway Housing Darlington, Dale & Valley - Wear Valley, Derwentside Homes Consett, Morrison’s Facility Solutions – Leeds. The signs of recovery throughout 2013 will hopefully be a forecast of things to come and we are certainly in a very good position to support all our customers in the future. 6 May we begin by again extending our thanks to all members of Bartram Walker’s Team that contributed to yet again another successful set of results for 2012. Amidst exceptionally tough trading conditions, with the country and construction industry still in the clutches of recession, to be able to produce these results is testimony to all the hard work put in by the whole team. Well done to all and thank you for your efforts. The business was able to appointed Ian Brough as Contracts Supervisor in mid 2013. Ian oversees the overseeing the refurbishment works carried out by the business. He previously worked with Bartram Walker and it’s fantastic that we were able to bring him back on board. Ian’s wealth of experience and knowledge will strengthen the service provided to our clients. Tendering success during the latter part of 2012 and early 2013 has enabled the business to forecast a healthy turnover. However, extracting the margin enjoyed in previous years is now the new challenge facing the business. Stiff competition has seen our tender success rate fall. However we have resisted the temptation to ‘buy’ work and we have targeted our efforts on securing contracts we believe will deliver a margin. We feel this approach will pay in the long term as we strongly believe that the tide has turned and that the construction industry is on the up. We continue to work closely with our sister company Esh Property Services, on various new build schemes and refurbishment projects throughout the Region. We have work on over 150 new build properties to deliver during 2013/14. We have also secured the East Durham Homes contract for EPS, which will see us deliver plumbing and heating installations to over 600 properties over the next 18 months. We still enjoy healthy relationships with our external clients, Gentoo Construction, Taylor Wimpey, Bett Homes to name a few, for whom we will be delivering work on over 100 new build properties during 2013/14. We have again successfully retained our status as an accredited member of the Micro-Regeneration Certification Scheme, allowing us to carryout installations of Air Source Heat Pumps, Solar PV and Solar Thermal. Green Deal Installer Status was also gained in the early part of 2013, which enables us to carryout work under the ECO schemes which are funded by Energy Companies that are striving to meet the Carbon Reduction enforced on them by 2015. Following Mechplant’s recent investment of 1.1 million pounds this year, a wave of new equipment has been introduced to the fleet. In total almost 40% of the fleet has now been replaced. 18 new JCB excavators were bought ranging from 1.5 ton JCB8014’s through to 8.5 ton JCB8085’s, 18 new dumpers ranging from 3 ton to 9 ton, 5 telescopic telehandlers and finally 5 Rollers. The above injection of new equipment will allow for higher utilisations figures to be achieved with smaller repair running costs, giving improved profits. 7 Kaleidoscope - Esh Group Esh Group has taken a majority stake in Remedios, an environmental technology company which specialises in sustainable brownfield remediation. Remedios, a ‘spin-out company’ from University of Aberdeen which retains a share in the company, applies a suite of unique diagnostic techniques to deliver highly effective solutions from new and conventional remediation processes. As a recognised world leader in the development and application of biosensor technology, Remedios integrates innovative science with conventional strategies to validate the use of chemical, physical and biological remediation. These solutions lead to the sustainable remediation of pollution on contaminated land and water projects to meet site-specific clean up targets. While traditional chemical analysis defines the form and concentration of the pollution, and is the foundation for risk assessment, biosensors and associated technologies place these results in a “real-time” biological context and allow more specific and detailed bespoke remedial designs. Remedios uses bespoke software which it has developed to identify the most cost-effective and sustainable approach for the management of contaminated sites. These services include: •F ull technical support to help the landowner or developer identify the scale and range of contamination The speculative new homes market has seen some recovery in recent months. Announcements from government and other house builders have helped to increase confidence in the battered house building market. The introduction of the government backed Help to Buy Scheme has seen interest and reservation levels increase. However, the market remains tough with mortgage lending still restricted. We have opened a number of new developments, including: • Langley Gardens, Langley Moor, Durham • Development of appropriate remediation strategies, and • Middridge Vale, Shildon • Undertaking any necessary geotechnical improvements required in parallel with remediation works • West Park Grange, Darlington Conor McKernan has been appointed General Manager of Remedios and he will work closely with the Remedios Team in Aberdeen which is led by Professor Graeme Paton, Technical Director and Founder of the business, who is a highly regarded specialist in the field of intelligent solutions in environmental assessment and remediation. We have also reopened the previously mothballed development at Westbury Park, Bishop Auckland. • Ashbrook Court, Ingleby Barwick We have opened new showhomes at Blyth and Spennymoor, and we will soon have one at Middles Farm Village in Stanley. These show homes illustrate the new Dunelm Homes specification, including Marshall Stone construction; Bi folding patio doors modern kitchens with eye level ovens and appliances, together with contemporary layouts with “living family kitchens”. Steve Murray joined the company in April, as Executive Chairman, following the departure of Phil Brown. The company continues to work hard to meet the targets set and to achieve the forecast in it’s current finance arrangements. 8 Business Development Networking Events September 2013 saw the return of our Business Development summer networking events. This year, they were held at Livello, Newcastle & the Oracle Bar in Leeds. At these events, we take the opportunity to thank our clients for their continued support over the last year. This year, we were joined by members of the Esh Group Eagles Newcastle Basketball Team, of which the Esh Group is proud sponsors again for the 2013-14 Season. Please see page 17 for more details of our new Venture with the Eagles. 9 Kaleidoscope - Esh Group Charity Events Macmillan Coffee Morning In September, Esh Group held a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support’s largest fundraising event. In 2012, 115,000 people signed up to the coffee morning and raised a record £15 million. At Esh Group, we know the way to our staff’s hearts and it’s definitely through food. So a bake sale seemed an ideal way. In total, we raised just over £200 and gained just over 2lb each. Family Fun Day This Summer saw the 11th Annual Family Fun Day held at Esh House in Bowburn, Durham. Each year, we raise money for local charities and this year we raised over £150 for Heel & Toe. It was a day for the children, with the grounds of Esh House being transformed into a perfect place to play, with numerous attractions. Heel & Toe Children’s Charity provides a free Conductive Education Therapy to children with Cerebral Palsy and other physical disabilities. Conductive Education is a system of learning. Any child can benefit and parents/carers are encouraged to take an active role in their own development. Movember During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of Movember is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Esh Group’s in house team, ‘Moustesh’ has raised an amazing £711 in total. 10 Bea Blue for Butterwick In early 2013, Esh Charitable Trust teamed up with Butterwick Hospice and became one of its corporate partners. Butterwick aims to improve the quality of life for those who have a life limiting illness, and their families. It aims to help them relate positively to every challenge they may encounter during their illness and to see death as part of life’s journey. In August this year we held out first Bea Blue dress down day with a prize for the person wearing the most blue. Congratulations to Jason Dixon from our Estimating Department who took first prize in his Summer themed outfit. Overall, we raised just over £70 which we will hope to build on over the year. Christmas Gift Giving Last Christmas, Esh Group supported Leeds Children’s Charity & Newcastle RVI’s Great North Children’s Hospitals Burns Unit. The Christmas scheme consisted of donating presents for over 80 children, aged between 4 weeks and 18 years old. Leeds Children’s Charity supports young people who suffer from poverty, neglect, abuse, learning difficulties, illness or are themselves a young carer. The majority of children come from the most deprived areas of Leeds and are recommended by their schools. The Great North Children’s Hospital is one of only 14 major children’s medical centres in the UK. It provides a full range of leading Children’s Services, tailored to the individual needs of every child they see. Every member of staff has been specially trained to look after children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers. The scheme ran across all 4 of Esh Group’s offices and a total of 200 presents were donated by Esh Group Staff. 11 Kaleidoscope - Esh Group Caroline’s Diary from India For the majority of people, access to clean water and sanitation is a given - something that we expect to be provided without question. But in a number of countries of the world this is not the case and not only is clean water not provided, but the water is killing people. It may be shocking to know that 2000 children a day die across the world due to lack of access to clean water. With these shocking statistics in mind, WaterAid work with a very clear ambition - for everyone in the world to have access to clean water and sanitation by 2030. In February this year I was given an amazing opportunity by Yorkshire Water - to travel to India for a week with representatives from a number of UK water companies and witness first hand the work of WaterAid. The trip was designed to give us an unprecedented view of the projects that WaterAid support in India, the methods that they use to engage communities and the bespoke solutions that are engineered to ensure sustainability. It is safe to say that the things I witnessed in India changed my perspectives on a lot of things. Until you witness first hand the reality of poverty on this scale you can never truly understand the day to day struggle that the lack of water causes. Collecting water is time consuming, dangerous, painful and political. More than the health issues that dirty water causes though it was the secondary issues that I hadn’t even considered that shocked me massively. You may have seen the well publicised recent rape trials in Delhi. What the news doesn’t tell you though is that Indian women are at risk of rape whenever they leave their villages to defecate - which by the way is at least twice a day, everyday, and always under cover of darkness for fear of being seen. But the risk isn’t a small one - we spoke to numerous women on our trip that had been victim to or had witnessed sexual assault - and all simply because they don’t have a toilet. That gives you just a taster of the complex issues that WaterAid deal with on a day to day basis, but what I wanted to tell you is the the positive effect that their work has. WaterAid is committed to long term, sustainable solutions and ones that are developed by the communities for their benefit. It is not about sinking a well or casting a slab for a latrine and walking away. It is about bespoke solutions for each community to help them create a foundation for their future development. 12 Padli was one of those villages 15 months ago. It had no latrines and the villages used open land surrounding the village school for defecation. That was until WaterAid started doing hygiene education in the school there and mobilised the children to educate their parents. And let me tell you, motivated, well-educated children are really a force to be reckoned with. Their energy and enthusiasm ensured that within 2 months the village had 98% coverage by latrines - the problem here wasn’t funding or engineering - it was simply education as to why latrines were important and some help to mobilise resources. And now in that village there are happy, engaged and ambitious children - who dream of becoming doctors, engineers and lawyers. Children who do not miss school because of illness and children who will spread the word to local villages about the changes they’ve made. Padli is not alone - WaterAid are helping numerous communities to develop their bespoke solutions and to implement them. Sometimes the involvement is greater than others, but the goal remains the same regardless. To find out more about my trip and read about the projects we visited in more detail you can read my blog at: India2013carolineanderica.blogspot.com Or visit www.wateraid.org.uk to find out more about the work that WaterAid do. 13 Kaleidoscope - Esh Group Esh Added Value Esh Employability: Schools & Colleges Business men and women don’t go into schools to ‘teach’. They go into schools to open students’ eyes to opportunities, to inspire and to act as a curriculum catalyst. In September, Esh Employability launched in 25 schools across the North of England. Managed by our Added Value Team, the programme facilitates engagement between the education and business worlds. Over the course of an entire academic year, Esh Group Staff and a diverse group of Local Employers, deliver employability workshops as part of the school timetable; provide mentor support; and, at the end of the year, welcome students to their workplace to sharpen their interview skills. This year, we are proud to be working in partnership with over 30 likeminded business that have a passion for showing how school work is relevant to their business. During the 2013/14 Academic Year, the Esh Employability Programme will provide 170 workshops to over 6000 students in 21 Local Authority Areas. Alarmingly, 73% of Young Offenders who leave custody re-offend within a year. This visit led to the formation of a Work Group focussed on helping prisoners break the cycle of reoffending and enhance the pioneering Chance for Change (C4C) programme, combining the talents and expertise of 22 likeminded organisations from across the Region. Managed by our Added Value Team, the 4 month programme is delivered to prisoners in the latter stages of their Prison Sentence, within the confines of the Prison. Key elements of the programme are: 14 workshops delivered by business guests, with the cohort compiling their employability portfolio: gaining interview experience and release on temporary licence opportunities. Through regular engagement and positive mentoring, we believe we help to break the cycle of reoffending by enhancing employability and life skills prior to release. Esh Communities Esh Communities Yorkshire was launched in 2012 and is the successor to the award winning ‘Grow with Esh’ Community Programme. Backed by our Charitable Trust. Esh Communities Grant of up to £1000 was made available to neighbourhood groups, organizations and charities residing in West and South Yorkshire to support new and ongoing projects or services making a positive difference in their area. Applications were sought from projects that aligned with at least 1 of our core values: 1. Improve quality of life for local residents 2. Support disadvantaged or vulnerable communities 3. Increase prospects of becoming employed 4. Promote equality by engaging minority and hard to reach groups 5. E ncourage healthy living, positive lifestyle changes and sustainable communities The Esh Added Value team was inundated with over 500 applications from all 9 Regions, short listing 2 successful projects from each. We have highlighted some great examples on the next page. In May 2013, a culmination event took place at the Prison to celebrate the completion of the second instalment of the Programme. Each member of our cohort delivered a short presentation to a business audience before receiving with a certificate. Our Added Value Team is currently working with the HMYOI Deerbolt, the Probation Service and the Ministry of Justice to develop the next instalment of the Programme ahead of an anticipated launch early in 2014. 15 Kaleidoscope - Esh Group Kirklees & Calderdale Bradford The Mixenden Parents Resource Centre: Neighbourhood Ventures: A ‘one-stop-shop’ that provides support for all kinds of issues via education and one-on-one services to boost the self esteem of the local residents. Esh Group Eagles Newcastle Newcastle Eagles, the most successful team in British Basketball history, launched the 2013-14 season by introducing a new look team and brand new name. Renamed Esh Group Eagles Newcastle - the announcement cements our continuing three year relationship as headline sponsors of the North East’s most successful sports team and a longer relationship with other businesses within Esh Group. Paul Blake, Managing Director and Co-Founder of The Eagles, explained; “Esh Group has been principal sponsor of the Newcastle Eagles since 2010 and I am both proud and delighted to be announcing this deal. Finding a sponsor which is truly compatible and supportive of both the business and the team is every sporting manager’s dream – and one which I believe we at The Eagles have been so very fortunate to find. This new ‘naming rights’ agreement elevates this sponsorship into a true partnership.” ‘Naming rights’ is an intrinsic element of basketball sponsorship culture around the globe. Major European Teams which have strong partnerships with their sponsors include Emporio Armani Milano in Italy: Telekomm Baskets Bonn, in Germany and Fiat Joventut in Barcelona, Spain. Brian Manning, Chief Executive of Esh Group, commented: “We are delighted to confirm our on-going sponsorship of The Eagles – especially to take up the opportunity of ‘naming rights’ so we have joined our two names together. This sponsorship represents an increased investment into the Eagles by Esh Group and also our continued commitment to support the Eagle’s Community Engagement through its charitable arm, the Eagles Community Foundation. At Esh Group we are passionate about supporting the communities in which we live and work and we are delighted to find a winning team which we can support which reflects those values too.” Since Esh Group took up the mantle of principal sponsor three seasons ago The Eagles has won four major titles, been runner-up in the BBL Championship twice and once in the BBL Cup and BBL Championship Play-Offs. The Eagles began the new season by facing Durham Wildcats at Sport Central on Friday 27th September and got off to a great start with their first win of the season. 17 Kaleidoscope - Esh Group Shhhhhh it’s Gossip Retirements Richard Graham - Stephen Easten After 42 years service Long Service Babies Russell Matfin - Esh Facilities - Phoebe Emma - 7lb 5oz Louise Lamb - 25 years with the company Nicky Hayes - Esh Facilities - Benjamin - 9lb 9oz Julie Lumsden - 25 years with the company Carl Martin - Esh Facilities - Freddie Carter - 6lb 9oz Laura Devaney - Esh Property Services - Lewis Joseph - 7lb 8 oz Sarah Harrison - Esh Property Services - Lotti - 7lb 14 oz James Potter - Lumsden & Carroll - Christopher David - 7lb 13oz Robin Purves of Esh Build became a grandfather for the first time - Jack Joshua - 9lb 1oz Steve Baxter - Esh Facilities - Joshua - 7lbs 4oz Jake Ebblewhite - Lumsden & Carroll - Joseph Leonard - 8lb 9oz Joanne Hewitson - Esh Property Services - Noel - 7lb 2oz Graduations Teresa Flynn - Foundation Degree in Business Management Claire Thompson - Foundation Degree in Payroll Management Garry Miller - BSc (Hons) Degree in Quantity Surveying Joanne Hewitson - BSc (Hons) Degree in Quantity Surveying Martyn Tweddle - BSc (Hons) Degree in Quantity Surveying 18 Andy Johnson signs for Darlington Cancer Research Having scored almost 100 goals in three seasons and being top scorer in the Northern League last season, it was no surprise to see Esh Build’s Andy Johnson sign for Darlington 1883 FC this summer. A big congratulations to all the Lumsden & Carroll staff along with NWL Originators who completed a sponsored walk around Kielder in aid of Cancer Research. The 13 mile walk took a total time of 4 hours 20 mins, which included a minor stop to refuel. With interest from clubs all around the North East, it was Darlington who managed to sign the highly rated striker, who joined Esh as an Assistant Estimator in late 2012. With 38 goals last season, Johnson was hot property and now looks forward to the next stage of his football career with a move that he is hoping will improve his game and make him an even better player. The weather on the day was kind but the blisters were not as forgiving as everyone finished the day with sore feet but a big sum made for charity. Early indications are that the group will have raised close to £1500.00 for Cancer Research UK. Well done to Olivia Tilley, Maxi Bell, Norman Barnett, Chris Welch, Graeme Hall, Lawrence Davies, Neil Carpenter and Brad Seymour for their effort!
