It is a free document. Much of the information in the drill manual was drawn from across the globe and from several different Roman Groups. It is provided for informational purposes only. It is strongly suggested that this handbook be reviewed for event information, rules, directions and forms prior to arrival at Castra Lafe. Like any GUIDEBOOK this document is a “GUIDE,” not the be all and end all of what will, or may transpire at AD 43. Recommendations for modifications/ additions to this guide for next year’s event are heartily solicited from ATTENDEES. (How can your comments be germane if you have never attended?) The staff and sponsors of AD 43 reserve the right to change or modify both this guide and the event to meet the requirements of the instant, the exigencies of weather, or other unforeseen acts of God and man. NOTE: As the staff of AD 43 Castra Lafe, we want your experience to be both memorable and fun. However, It must be understood that AD 43 Castra Lafe is a voluntary, immersion-reenacting event. It is not a “six-flags over anywhere” type amusement park for individuals to come and play or do as they please. This is an immersion event with a loosely planned agenda and each attendee must be willing to participate in order for all to receive the maximum impact from the experience. 3 For legionary and Roman army officer participants, this means adherence to military standards and discipline during operational periods. For all others it means adherence to period standards of dress and equipment and registered character. While the staff of AD43 Castra Lafe are not paid and AD43 Castra Lafe is a “not for profit” event, neither is it a democracy. Services provided onsite shall be understood to be simple hosting courtesies and not “paid for services.” Any schedule or activity is subject to change, deletion, or modification based upon onsite attendees, weather, availability of funds, or operational feasibility determined by the AD 43 Castra Lafe staff only. It shall also be understood that the AD 43 Castra Lafe staff are not responsible to any person, group, or entity in regards to “expectations” or provision of “schedule,” “entertainment,” “safety,” or “services.” (It is strongly suggested that this paragraph be reread to ensure complete comprehension in advance of attendance or participation in any AD 43 event or activity.) It is expected that participants will share in the maintenance and housekeeping requirements of Castra Lafe during the event as part of the normal duties of a Roman legionnaire. Cooking is a joint venture by both AD 43 Staff and attending volunteers. Those who wish to assist or prepare a special item for consumption are readily invited to contact the event staff ahead of time to coordinate menu and presentation. 4 CONTACT INFORMATION Unit Web Site . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . www.ad43.org Centurion, Mark Saddler, Organizational Policy . . . . . . . msaddler@suddenlink.net Medicus, Caius Fabius, Advisor and Unit Mentor . . . . . . caius_fabius@hotmail.com Optio, Paul Smith, Financial Issues, Editor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . psmith@ag.org Legionary, Carl Steyer, Organizational Policy, Unit Fabricator. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . csteyer@grnco.net Signifier, Red Millis, Unit Programs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . mclm@windstream.net USPS mail to the unit at: Paul W. If you are coming east through Memphis, Tennessee, take Hwy 55 to US 63. Make sure you follow the speed limit to the letter from Tyronza to Marked Tree, Arkansas (the biggest speed traps in the state, if not the world). Arriving in Jonesboro, participants should take the best route north to Paragould, Arkansas. Take 49 north; then turn onto Hwy 135 north (the intersection across from Glen Sain Ford dealership on the north side of town.) Drive approximately 9 miles to Lafe, Arkansas. Upon reaching Lafe, you will pass a small convenience store; about ¼ mile past the store, turn right onto Valley Drive and drive to the end of the paved road. Valley Drive is a paved road and just before St. Johns Lutheran Church. St. Johns has a cemetery and, if you are arriving at night, a blue cross lit above the steeple will be visible. (Look for the signs in Lafe that look like a Roman shield for directions.) 6 Drive to the end of the road and straight into the field and sign in. If you plan on arriving later than 2200 (10 PM) on Thursday or Friday please e-mail me so that we can arrange to meet you at the gate. Hope to see you around the fire Centvrion Qvintvs Valerivs, Legio II Avgvstae For specific directions from your home location, access MapQuest or other online directions website. 7 WHAT IS AD 43? Castra Lafe 2011 Concept and Plan Concept: This event, as closely as possible, shall provide Reenactors, Living Historians, and others with an interest in the period, a total immersion venue to experience in a real world environment the historical foes of each culture using the equipment associated with the period, under the conditions of the period, consuming the rations of the period, living as the Roman and Celtic peoples of the turn of the first century AD did. Where: Lafe, Arkansas (See directions and map on pages 4 & 5.) When: This year’s event shall be conducted March 18–21, 2011. The event officially begins with morning muster on Friday, March19. The Castra Lafe site opens at noon on Thursday, March 18th. Plan: Arrive on site Thursday, Event officially begins at 8 am on Friday and ends at Noon on Sunday. No vehicles allowed past the Creek after 10 pm Thursday night. Arrive early or carry your gear in. Roman Legionary training, drilling, and fort construction will occur on Friday, with needlefelt battles on Saturday. British Celts will have their own schedule on Friday and participate in needlefelt battles on Saturday. More information to be posted on www.ad43.org 8 NOT A SHIELD BANGER? WHAT ABOUT YOU? It is understood by the Staff at AD 43 that some participants may not be interested in needle felt combat, but still have a confirmed interest in the conditions of service and equipment of the Roman Legionary or civilian of the period. For those individuals, attendance as either an Immune, Training Legionnaire, or Romano/Celtic civilian may be of interest. Immunes, based upon capability and desire, shall be tasked with route marches with kit, weapons drill, combat drills, support of Castra Lafe Staff, and various other tasks historically associated with their position. Training Legionnaire can expect route marches in full kit, weapons drills at the pole and on the campus militaries, pilum drills, and close order drills. Romano/Celtic civilians are invited to participate as tradesmen in the Vicus, offering displays of actual fabrication or skills, food, or other activities which would have been part of the lives and livelihood of this closely intertwined culture group. IT SHALL BE NOTED THAT AT ALL TIMES, THE VICUS IS OFF LIMITS FOR NEEDLE FELT OPERATIONS. THERE SHALL BE NO EXCEPTIONS! 9 Are you a specialist? Do you have skills as either a historian, linguist, culinary aficionado, thespian, weapons master, or skilled fabricator? If so, would you have an interest in presenting a class or demonstration of your skill? We welcome you, and are willing to provide you both a time slot and venue to present your specialty. Please contact the AD 43 Staff to arrange both a place and time for your presentation! RULES, ADVISORIES, SAFETY This event will be the ninth hosted on this site. There is a site fee of $60 (or $50 if preregistering) for use of the site, evening meals, straw bedding, and firewood provided. The pre-registration rate of $50 must be postmarked by March 1, 2011. There are a few rules for the safety of participants. 1. NO drugs are allowed. Period. 2. Alcohol will be permitted, but there will be no alcohol given to or consumed by minors (under age 21) at any time. 3. Campfires will be built only in authorized fire pits. 4. Campfires will have a “fire watch” at all times. NO UNATTENDED FIRES WILL BE ALLOWED. 5. The Roman Group will have a leader, as well as the Germanic Group. These persons will be responsible for fire prevention and your safety. In an emergency, 10 please listen to them and be vigilant about the fire risk. 6. Upon arrival, please sign in and let the staff know if there are any medical conditions/allergies (beestings, food allergies, diabetes, etc.) or medications (insulin, etc.) which we need to know about. 7. Small children left unattended will be sold as galley slaves; small children who are supervised will be welcome to stay. 8. The owner of the land and the staff will not be held responsible for accidents, injury, or lost items. Please be careful and obey the rules. 9. This is private property and the landowner will be fighting for Rome and tossing pila as well, but we should remind all people attending that: Note the following • Any infraction of the above rules could mean expulsion from the site. • Members of the Castra Lafe staff are all volunteers and reserve the right to deny entry or have persons removed from the property who are in violation of site rules or state or federal laws. • All fees will be paid, and waivers and registration forms will be signed at the front gate before proceeding into the site. • All attendees will get dressed out before leaving the gate or crossing the bridge. A dressing tent will be provided at the gate. • This is an Ancient Reenactment, participants should strive for authenticity. You can pitch your modern tent near the parking area, talk your way into someone’s period tent, or just pull up a warm sheepskin next to one of the camp fires. • Temperature will typically be in 40º to 50º during daylight. At night, it will be colder hence the wool and warm skins. We personally would suggest three or four wool blankets. • Wood for fires will be provided (available at fort). • Latrines and showers are available on site. • Straw will be provided for bedding (if needed). • Water will be available (bring your own period containers, please). • Germanic or Celtic re-enactors should contact the local clan leader for the location of their campsite. 11 NEEDLE FELT COMBAT SYSTEM The Tao of Needle Felt Combat The first thing to understand in Needle felt Combat is that this is Honor Combat. We wish to get a feel for the use or weapons in armor and working together is a simulated combat environment. This is not a system for hitting as hard as possible. In fact, if someone does start losing control and acting in an unsafe manner, the exercise will be stopped and the person or persons will either be warned or banned from further fighting at the event. The most important thing is for each individual to be aware of his or her surroundings, and make an effort to feel any blows from enemy (or friendly) weapons. When you feel a strike from a weapon, you should show that you feel the blow! If you are hit in the leg, arm, torso, or head you should fall down. Sure, if you have armor on, you would be less likely to be killed, BUT, you are also much less likely to even feel a blow. If you feel it, take the blow. You can fight again, later. Failure to take the blows may result in being banned from further combat. 12 Safety If you hear a whistle blast, guard yourself and stop attacking. Stop all action until there is permission to resume combat. Safety Gear. Required safety gear is Groin protection, usually an athletic cup, and safety goggles. You are encouraged to wear a gorget or throat protection. You may hide this under a scarf or make it from skin colored leather. It should protect your larynx from an accidental blow, and should be backed by at least ½ inch of compression foam. Simulated combat is dangerous, and shields, helmets, hobnails and other items may hurt you. Injuries to hands, feet, legs, faces have occurred, and will occur again. The use of thin gloves is recommended for people whose job requires fine motor skills with their hands on the days following this event. Needle felt Weapons We have some basic rules for needle felt weapons. You are permitted to wear Roman or Germanic/Celtic armor and helmets, tunics and shoes from the period of 50 BC to AD 50(ish). You may not carry actual weapons into needle felt combat. You will be warned before any needle felt combat event. All weapons must meet basic safety standards. Needle felt weapons may include one handed swords, spears, javelins, pila, and daggers. They may include axes and clubs, as well as bows and arrows, slings, and light catapult weapons. No two-handed cut and slash weapons are allowed. No double headed (pugil stick) style weapons are allowed. Shields must be constructed out of materials that would have existed in AD9… Aluminum, Plastic, Zip Ties, Rubber or Duraliner coating will not be allowed. Make authentic equipment to ensure acceptance for use. 13 Fighters mounted on horses may not use lances or couched spears. All weapons will be tested prior to use. If you are willing to be hit in the face with your own weapon, being swung by the strongest guy there, then it is probably safe! IF STRUCK IN NF COMBAT YOU HAD BETTER COUNT THE HIT. IF YOU ARE TOLD TO TAKE THE HIT BY A JUDGE MORE THAN TWICE THEN YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE BATTLE FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. WHEN STRUCK IN COMBAT EITHER FALL DOWN IN A GLORIUS DEATH OR IF IN A BAD SPOT THEN SIMPLY CALL OUT THAT YOU ARE HIT AND WALK AWAY HOLDING YOUR NF WEAPON BY THE BLADE OVER YOUR HEAD. IF YOU ARE NOT IN SAFETY GEAR AND A NEEDLEFELT COMBAT STARTS OR YOU COME NEAR A NEEDLEFELT COMBAT, IMMEDIATELY FALL DOWN AS IF DEAD AND COVER YOUR EYES WITH YOUR HAND. NEEDLEFELT COMBAT WILL NOT STOP FOR UNPREPARED BYSTANDERS. Missile Weapons Slinger ammo will be missiles made from Crayola® Model Magic® compound, although hackie sacks are acceptable. (See instructions for making missiles from Crayola® Model Magic® on page 25: Preparing Slingshot Ammunition.) The only archery we plan to allow in 2011 is using Dan Peterson needle felt arrows. They may not be aimed directly at anyone. They are fired into the air and come down on the target. 14 2011 AD43 CASTRA LAFE REGISTRATION FORM Name Address City/State/Zip: E-mail Phone Number Impression: ❏ Roman ❏ Celt ❏ Civilian Rank/Name of your impression Unit Affiliation __________________________________________________________ Planned date of departure Planned date of arrival Do you desire a T-shirt? ❏ Yes ❏ If yes, quantity size No (total at $20 each $ ) Medical Prescreen. By signing this agreement you as a vendor are agreeing to the following conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. I understand I sell by invitation at the event and because AD43 is private property, Castra Lafe AD43 staff may limit the items tendered for sale, operation, and location of any point of sale on the property during the event. I also understand that I am responsible for the Arkansas sales tax and will ensure that these funds are provided to the staff of Castra Lafe prior to leaving the property. (The current sales tax rate will be provided to the vender upon arrival.) By signing this registration form I understand that I am an independent operator and not an employee or staff member of AD43. Castra Lafe AD43 staff makes no claim to accuracy or quality of goods tendered for sale and all sales are between vendor and customer. Castra Lafe AD43 staff does not accept any financial responsibility for goods sold or bought on site. I understand that this is a reenactment event and my goods must conform or appeal to the period of 50 BCE to AD 250. Any items that are ancient related but modern in form such as Roman or Celtic T-shirts, stickers and hats, etc are allowed but will be kept under cover until a possible sale is imminent. They will then be placed back under cover once sale is completed. Under no circumstances will items such as shirts, CDs, etc. be left out. The idea is to approximate a period potter, metal smith, wood worker, etc. Tents or flys will be canvas or other material appropriate to the period. No scalloped tents, PVC, or aluminum poles please. Wooden poles may be cut on site if required. I will adhere to the dress code of AD43. I will dress appropriate to the period 50 BCE to AD 250. Fantasy or Science Fiction dress and accoutrements are neither appropriate, nor acceptable. I understand that AD43 is a family event, any items or products that would be inappropriate to this venue are strictly prohibited. Historically accurate items such as cast phallus type amulets may be sold, but must be kept “under table.” I understand that AD43 staff is not responsible for accidents, theft, or loss/damage of sale items due to poor weather conditions during the event. I agree that I will portray a merchant/craftsman appropriate to this time period and will strive to keep my area as historically accurate as possible. Printed Name Signature Date General Description of Merchandise to be sold: 18 SAFETY AND CONDITIONS AT LAFE, AR Please note that the event IS being conducted at the end of the coldest part of the year. Consequently, cloaks, breeches, and socks/fur for sandals are ALL STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Safety at Castra Lafe Purify All Drinking Water: Do not drink untreated water! Water in Arkansas's springs, streams, and lakes is often clear and inviting but should not be considered safe to drink until properly treated. Regardless of how clean it appears, a stream or lake can be infested with parasites or bacteria that may make you quite sick. The last thing you need is to become ill in a remote location or on your vacation. Treat all water with water purification tablets as instructed on the label, boil for approximately 6 to 10 minutes, or use water purification filters which are specifically labeled—“Effective against Giardia.” Things That Get Under Your Skin: Ticks, chiggers and mosquitoes are common throughout Arkansas. During the warm months of spring, summer, and fall, the use of a good insect repellent is recommended. Although related diseases are rare, there have been cases of Lyme's Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever reported in Arkansas. At the very least, each of these insects can become quite annoying and their contact can become very uncomfortable. Check your body, head, and hair often for ticks when hiking in a wooded or grassy area. Immediately remove any you find. When you take hold of a tick, it will usually release its hold at once. If it does not, gently grasp it with tweezers or forceps and pull. Make sure that all parts are removed. 19 Things That Rub You the Wrong Way: Poison ivy is quite common in the southern United States, and is found in abundance along many trails. It can take the form of a spreading groundcover or a climbing vine that attaches itself to trees and rocks. A good common rule is “Leaves of three—let it be.” Learn to recognize the three shiny leaves and the vines with the reddish, hair-like rootlets that characterize this plant. Poison ivy is contracted by absorbing the oily substance called urishiol, found year-round on its vines, stems and leaves. It can also be translocated by coming in contact with shoes, clothing, pet hair, etc. If these items are subsequently handled, the oil may irritate the contacted section of the body. If poison ivy comes in contact with your skin or clothes, wash with soap and cold water as soon as possible. If you know you are highly allergic, it would be wise to consult your pharmacist before making a trip. There are ivy block medications available to offer protection. Watch Your Step: Although there are venomous snakes found in NE Arkansas, snakebites are quite rare and can usually be prevented by being alert. The best way to avoid snakebite is to avoid snakes. Do not step where you cannot see. Do not put your hands inside holes in trees, logs or rocks. Do not wander around camp in the dark without a flashlight. Learn the difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes. Common venomous snakes in Arkansas are the copperhead, rattlesnake, and water moccasin. The majority of snakes encountered are non-venomous; nevertheless, if in doubt, assume that the snake is venomous and avoid it. If a bite does occur, keep the victim calm and quiet, and seek medical help as quickly as you are able. Above all, remember to remain calm! Most severe snakebite injuries are usually the result of mishandling the injury rather than of the venom itself. If an accident does occur, remain calm. Make the victim comfortable and evaluate your options. Go for help as quickly as possible. The faster qualified medical help arrives, the better the chances for a quick and complete recovery. HEAT INJURY PREVENTION Here are some facts about heat injury from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. How do soldiers sustain a heat injury? Soldiers participating in sports events or practice sessions during intense heat are the most susceptible to heat injury. Soldiers who do not drink enough fluids during the intense heat also are prone to heat injury. Are there different types of heat injuries? There are many forms of heat injury. The mildest form of heat injury is heat cramps, which occurs when soldiers do not drink enough fluids when exercising. Heat exhaustion is a more serious injury, triggered by excessive sweating and inadequate fluid replacement; the body is unable to supply the increased blood volume needed by the brain, skin and the muscles in extreme heat. The result is dizziness, weakness, and fainting. The most serious form of heat injury is life-threatening heatstroke. Heatstroke occurs when the body's sweating mechanism shuts down, the skin become hot and dry, and the body is depleted of fluids. 20 How can heat injury be prevented? Fluid replacement is essential in preventing heat injury. Appropriate physical conditioning and becoming adjusted with the climate also are important. Recognition of the early symptoms of heat injury by soldiers is critical. The longer the soldier waits, the more severe the heat injury. Here are some preventative tips to help soldiers avoid heat injury: • Drink plenty of fluids when participating in a sports activity, even if you are not thirsty. • Preseason conditioning will help your body cope with the heat and humidity. • Take many breaks in hot weather. Do not over exert yourself especially if you have not properly trained for the sport. • Participate in athletic activities in the morning or late afternoon when the temperature is cooler. The sun's rays are most intense between 10 am and 4 pm. • Participating in shorter, faster sports events will not decrease the risk of heat injury in hot weather. Instead, try to schedule, longer slower-paced events. • Wear lightweight, light colored clothes made of porous materials. Do not wear full equipment, such as heavy football pads, when practicing. • If you believe someone is suffering from overexposure to heat, immediately seek medical care. Until help arrives, you should move the victim to a shaded area; remove any excess clothing; wet and fan the body; and elevate the legs and buttocks. 21 APPENDICES Preparing Slingshot Ammunition Latin Commands Terms Dictionary Duties of Various Ranks Pre-Attendance Physical Training Program AD43 Commemorative T-Shirt Oath of the Army 22 Preparing Slingshot Ammunition Missiles made from crayola ® model magic ® Crayola® Model Magic® can be found in many art or hobby stores. Smaller packets go for about $4 to $10; large packets go from between $35 and $60. The clay comes in multiple colors so the choice is yours. However, white or gray is preferred for AD 9 combat. Cut the brick of Crayola® Model Magic® into 1-inch squares. This size can vary according to the preference of the individual. Using your hands, roll the square into a ball. It should be no larger than a small egg. Shape the ball to make it bullet or egg shape. Place on wax paper, ensuring that each ball does not touch another or they may stick together. Be careful the ammo has no cracks because when it dries, the crack will widen which can lead the ammo to break. Crayola® Model Magic® dries to a resilient consistency within 24 to 36 hours, without kiln drying. It is not a hard process, just time consuming. You can use a marker on the ammo to show who it belongs to. Thanks to Benjamin Geraci for the development of these missiles. 23 LATIN COMMANDS / TERMS DICTIONARY NOTE: C is pronounced as a K (Hard sound) V is pronounced as a W J is pronounced as a Y or I Reverte! Aquilifer: the senior standard bearer in the legion, in charge of the legionary eagle and the pay-chest. Prime Pilus: Senior centurion Legatus legionis: commander of a legion; in this case Vespasian was the commander of Legio II Augusta Legatus Augusti or consularis: the title of the provincial governor of Britain 31 Duties of Tribune To keep the troops in camp, to bring them out for training, to keep the keys of gates, from time to time to go the rounds of the guards, to be present at the soldiers' mealtimes and to test the quality of their food; to keep the quartermaster from cheating, to punish offences, to hear the soldiers' complaints and to inspect their sick quarters. We also have Pliny's testimony that his time as Tribune of the third legion in Syria was spent auditing the accounts of the legion and its auxiliaries and uncovering 'a great deal of shocking rapacity and deliberate inaccuracy' (Pliny. Epistles VII.31). Pliny also mentions in several of his letters the bartering for positions as Tribune between highly placed patrons on behalf of their friends' and clients' sons. Pliny was, of course, a 'senatorial' Laticlavius tribune, and these men seem to have been given lighter duties generally, serving for a minimum of only six months. In Caesar's Commentaries (VI.40) there is mention of one Caius Trebonius, an Equestrian (and almost certainly a Tribune) appointed to lead several cohorts on a foraging mission. When the mission is attacked, Trebonius leads the veterans in breaking through the enemy and getting back inside the camp - at this date, then, the tribune must have exercised a certain level of battlefield authority and expertise. This is backed up by some of the officers' careers reconstructed by Birley - the average age for a first commission as a Praefectus Cohortis was, Birley believes, 38 years old (although probably younger - most seem to have been recruited from the higher municipal offices in the provinces, and would therefore have been in their early thirties). The average age at death for a legion Military Tribune was 42. Clearly these men were not the callow youths of popular preconception! Most appointments in each of the equestrian tres militiae were held for 2-4 years, and there are records of tribunes holding positions in several legions consecutively. Initial commissioning, and all advances in rank, were based on ability, character and (inevitably but far from solely!) influence. These were skilled and valued men, therefore, often with many years experience as military commanders, able to operate both within the military system and civil administration. Before beginning any exercise program, always consult with your doctor. Flexibility Exercises. (Source; USMC TRAINING GUIDE, pre-Boot Camp departure.) Always warm up prior to beginning any workout or activity. At the end of the workout or activity, cool down to adequately recover and reduce later muscle soreness. 33 General tips: Drink plenty of water. Get plenty of rest. Be consistent. You may begin with a low intensity aerobic activity such as a brisk walk until a sweat is broken followed by the exercises depicted below. Start with one or two repetitions to each side and hold positions for 10 to 30 seconds. Remember to stretch slowly, under control, and without bouncing or jerking and breathe normally. Stretch until you feel gentle pressure but not pain. Avoid stretches which are uncomfortable or hurt. A 5-day week, 30-day out workout program is outlined below: Walk 2 miles at rapid consistent pace. 2 x 10 crunches/ sit-ups 1 x max pull ups, or 10 – 30 second arm hang. 34 AD43 COMMEMORATIVE T-SHIRT As in past AD43 Events, we will be offering a T-shirt to commemorate your experience at the 2011 Castra Lafe AD 43 event.
