Sharing the Gospel At a very old age Elizabeth and her husband, Zechariah prayed for a son. When Zechariah did not believe that God could give them a baby, God took away his voice. After their baby was born, Zechariah agreed to name him John. Then God gave him his voice back. Believe that God can answer your prayers. If others say that what you are trying to do is impossible, remember all things are possible with God. PRAYER Lord, help me do what others believe is impossible. SOMETHING TO DRAW Draw Elizabeth and Zechariah with their new baby boy, John the Baptist. MISSION FOR THE WEEK I will help my brother and sister do something that is difficult for them. ©2008 - PO Box 510817, New Berlin, WI 53151-0817 1-800-950-9952 x2469 - LPiResourceCenter.com His Name Is John St. Kieran Parish, Shelby Township . . . Page 4 St. Kieran Parish, Shelby Township Nativity of St. John the Baptist When politicians decide whether to enter a race for office, one thing that they take into account is name recognition. It is generally pretty easy to win an election for school board or town supervisor without everyone knowing you because there is little competition for those posts. But entering a statewide race such as one for governor or senator requires that the candidate be readily recognizable to voters either through previous service in public office or through a high-profile career. A person has to have "made a name for himself" as the saying goes. It also doesn't hurt to be a name dropper along the campaign trail. Republicans will wrap themselves in the mantle of Ronald Reagan or Abraham Lincoln, while Democrats will lift up Franklin D. Roosevelt. As we celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist this weekend we hear the story of his naming. The tradition of passing a name on in the family was much stronger in the Near East than it is in present day America. A string of names helped identify a person's tribe as well as his relationship within the group. When Elizabeth and Zechariah wanted to give their child the name "John," their neighbors and relatives immediately pointed out that none of their other relatives had that name. In Luke's Gospel, what happens to John precedes and in some ways foretells what will happen to Jesus. There is the announcement of a miraculous conception. There is some hesitation on the part of the husband. A name is given to each child by an angel. There is a prediction of what this child will be. The fact that John's name (as well as Jesus') was divinely selected points to a greater reality at work. God has something to do with the direction of these lives. We, who carry the name Christian, should also recognize that God has something to do with the direction of our lives as well. CYO Night at Comerica Park D Support CYO and cheer on the Detroit Tigers as they play the Los Angeles Angels on July 16. The Tigers will donate $2 from each upper reserved and upper box infield seat to CYO Detroit. Also, one lucky fan (and guests) will get the opportunity to go on the field for pre-game batting practice. To purchase tickets or for information: www.tigers.com/cyo. Mark Your Calendars! The St. Kieran Parish Picnic will be held Sunday, September 9, the actual Feast Day of St. Kieran! Please mark the date on your calendars. The picnic will begin immediately after the 11:30 Polka Mass, and will end at 4 p.m. ©2012 Liturgical Publications Inc One of my coworkers said that we Catholics believe we kill Christ again when we celebrate the Mass since it is his sacrifice. I know that is not right, but how do we explain it? We do indeed believe that the Mass is the un-bloody sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and we believe that the sacrifice is made present again on the altar. But when it is made present again, it is not to repeat it, but to join ourselves to it. The ritual of the Mass makes the sacrifice of the cross present again. We are joined to the saving work of Christ, not just simply remembering it. The closest thing we might have in our culture is when a couple saves some wedding cake in the freezer, and on their first anniversary they may watch their wedding video and eat the cake, all to recapture the moment. The Jews celebrate a Seder meal, not to remember the Passover, but to participate in it through the ritual foods, questions, and readings. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the Mass as the "Holy Sacrifice, because it makes present the one sacrifice of Christ?" (#1330). To think that we must sacrifice Christ over and over again would negate what he did on Calvary. To celebrate and renew it each day allows us to participate in it. That is the "source and summit" of Christian life. © 2010 Liturgical Publications Inc St. Kieran Parish, Shelby Township Page 5 ST. KIERAN CATHOLIC CHURCH EASTER VIGIL 2012 Every year, in parishes across the country and throughout the world, candidates for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) prepare to become members of the Catholic Church. This process of conversion, discernment, preparation, and formation is guided by the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults - RCIA . This year, on April 7, 2012, at our Easter Vigil, we welcomed seven new members into our community. Corner of the Religious Education Building "It is for us that, during eighteen hundred years, our divine Savior has remained day and night on our altars, that we may have recourse to Him in all our needs; and nothing so much afflicts His divine Heart as our ingratitude for such a favor, and our neglect to visit Him and ask His blessing." (St. Marcellin Champagnat) The chapel is open many hours for prayer because of committed adorers. If you have had occasion to pray in the chapel, but have not as yet committed to an hour, please consider committing to an open hour. Call PAT 586-739-9694 or BEV 586-781-3329 to commit to one hour per week of prayer or to be a substitute adorer. The hour is filled with graces that pour out to you, your family, our parish, our community, and our world. Please do not underestimate your sacrifice of time. Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. At times young adults who have moved away for years think they are still registered under their parents. But membership requires signing up - formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social and ministerial activities of your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses and programs are planned and scheduled. Registration shows you belong! It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for tax purposes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to assist in its mission. Registering in your parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of your parish. 2009 Liturgical Publications Inc.
