annual giving issue - York Catholic High School
SUMMER | 2016 TIME TALENT TREASURE PAGES 4-27 ANNUAL GIVING ISSUE 2015-2016 FROM The PRINCIPAL Mission Statement York Catholic High School educates students focused on the cultivation of faith, mind, and heart. We, as a Christian family, are guided by a Catholic moral compass as modeled by Jesus Christ. Our students are academically sound, intellectually curious, and ethically prepared to serve the global community with grace. facebook - York Catholic High School twitter - @YorkCatholicHS / @YorkCathAthlet instagram - York Catholic youtube - YorkCatholicHS FOLLOW YORK CATHOLIC on social media YC MAKING A DIFFERENCE PRINCIPAL is a publication of York Catholic High School for alumni, parents, and friends of the school. IN STUDENTS’ LIVES All items for submission, suggestions, and correspondence should be addressed to: We recently asked students to write an essay detailing what YC means to them. We know you will join us in being proud of our talented students as you read some of their words: We are excited to continue to honor our legacy community in this issue of our Greensleeves magazine. The last two issues have featured families which include multiple generations of YC graduates who continue to support the mission of our school. In this issue, we highlight the legacy of our entire community. Whether you are a graduate, a parent, a volunteer, a committee member, or simply a friend, the legacy you have helped create through the donation of time, talent, and treasure, continues in our four walls as we enter our 88th year of educating youth in York County. Greensleeves York Catholic High School 601 E. Springettsbury Avenue York, PA 17403 lkeith@yorkcatholic.org Dear YC Family, KATIE SEUFERT Greensleeves It is amazing to me to learn and hear how the legacy of York Catholic continues to impact families and builds lasting friendships for generations. In July, I had the fortunate privilege to experience this impact first-hand while on vacation in Topsail, North Carolina, where five YC families who first met at St. Rose of Lima Parish many decades ago, continue to gather every year. What began as a family vacation with a few friends has spread to include up to 70 people annually spreading over 3 generations of YC parents, alumni, and future graduates. These families are a testament to the values we share at York Catholic; a place where students are formed in faith, mind, and heart, where our graduates collectively make lasting impacts as they serve the global community, and where friendships are created to last for generations to come. Deadline for next issue: Sept. 23 Greensleeves Staff “Even though I came from a public school and did not go through primary school with the other York Catholic students, they welcomed me in and allowed me to be part of the school family. At York Catholic, I like how grade levels are not barriers for friend groups.” ~Katy Rader ‘19 Maida Connor Executive Director of Advancement mconnor@yorkcatholic.org 717-846-8871 x30 “York Catholic has improved me as a person. Reception to follow. 3 INSPIRED BY VOLUNTEERING BETH BRENNAN TIME YC Parent 4 Beth Brennan is a face you will see at most YC events and sports. Many mistake her for an employee, but in truth, Beth is a volunteer. She brings fresh ideas and lends her hands to whatever work needs to be done. Anytime there is a function where parents’ assistance is needed, Beth is the one to call to get everyone on board. And projects are never just done in the way they were imagined; Beth always adds her special touch to make them even more memorable. We asked Beth to share what inspires her to be such an active volunteer while working at her paying job and raising four children. “Growing up with ten siblings, I was blessed to be able to attend Catholic schools from 1st through 12th grade. Much of the reason tuition was so affordable, was all the families of our parish and high schools volunteered their time with the many tasks of running a parish or school – hang banners and signs to advertise our annual carnival; address, stuff and compile bulk mailings; help the custodians empty trash cans and clean boards; help out in the school stores; serve at Mass as altar servers, lectors, and cantors. These are some of the ways we helped to run our parish and high schools. In my home growing up, we were always reminded to do our part. Doing our part is one of the many lessons I recall from my childhood, and I hope my husband, Sean, and I have instilled in our own children. We realize in an effort to keep Catholic school tuition affordable, keeping our family grounded with our personal efforts, and continuing to keep a school like YC functioning for years to come, we need to do our part and schedule our time so that we are able to give back to our parish, YC, and other organizations which our family supports. It is easy to say that someone else can do it or should do it, but we run into problems if everyone would think this way. It is great at YC to be surrounded by many who are willing to help with the needs of running a Catholic high school. St. Francis led a life of helping others and his is a life to aspire towards. A portion of the Prayer of St. Francis sums up why I believe we are here on earth: ‘Lord, make me an instrument of your peace…for it is in giving that we receive…’ I do believe my family is often on the receiving end, which makes it even easier to give our time towards making YC prosper as we approach its 100th year serving the families of York County.” THANK YOU to Our Volunteer Leadership & Committee Members York Catholic High School 2015-2016 Board Roster Episcopal Member Most Reverend Ronald W. Thank you! Your time is a valuable treasure to YC. 5 talent 6 We are blessed to have such rich talent at York Catholic. Our students continue to lead the county with their academic and athletic achievements. Our art students are showing in local galleries and our music students are being requested to perform at area events. We are proud to have excellent faculty and staff broadening our students’ minds and leading them to success. Even more gratifying is that our students acknowledge the important role their teachers play in their lives beyond the classroom. Many alumni send notes or visit their former teachers to thank them for the preparation they received. MEGAN WERTZ Her Time & Talent are Our Treasure Each issue of Greensleeves we highlight the diverse talent we have under our roof at YC. In this issue, our Talent section spotlights our Valedictorian and AP scholars, two athletes who achieved national recognition, a teacher who has given over 40 years of service to YC, and a teacher who was recognized this past year for the time she gives back to our students through grooming them academically and by moderating extra-curricular activities that consume hours of extra work each day. It’s evident that the TIME put into grooming TALENT is truly a TREASURE to York Catholic. York Catholic Athletes Named to National All-Academic Team US Lacrosse named two York Catholic players, Lindsey China and Kayleigh Pokrivka, to the 2016 Girls High School All-Academic Team. This is the 2nd year China has achieved this honor. A US Lacrosse All-Academic Team member is a player who exhibits exemplary lacrosse skills, good sportsmanship on the field, and represents high standards of academic achievement in the classroom. This player should also have left her mark beyond the lacrosse field and the classroom by making significant contributions of service to the school and/or her community. York Catholic Girls’ Lacrosse Head Coach, Rob Linthicum said, “Lindsay and Kayleigh are not only outstanding lacrosse players, but are very intelligent young ladies and great role models. They are tremendous assets to York Catholic and the community.” Chris Lesher, Megan Wertz, Steve Lesher In the spring, local McDonalds’ franchises selected schools in our area to honor special teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week. Chris and Steve Lesher, parents of Jordan ’16 and Aaron ‘19, and owner/ operators of McDonald’s on Memory Lane in York, selected York Catholic. Mrs. Megan Wertz was selected as the honored teacher and received flowers, a check for $100, and a gift bag from McDonald’s. All of the YC teachers also received gift cards. York Catholic is so thankful to the Lesher’s for bestowing this honor on our teachers and especially Mrs. Wertz. The following is Megan’s biography submitted for the honor. Megan Wertz is a ten year veteran teacher of York Catholic High School. She was amazing from the start but has continued to raise the bar of excellence for herself and students. She is exceptional in her field both in content and pedagogy. She currently teaches Sociology/Psychology, a college level course for seniors, World History for sophomores, and the challenging Advanced Placement (AP) US History course where her students year after year have a 100% pass rate. As an AP instructor she maintains the highest percentage of students obtaining a 3 or higher on the AP exam and has the most students year after year scoring a 5, while also having the highest enrollment of all AP courses offered at York Catholic. Moreover, she is a humble leader who is dedicated to her students, the school community, and the community at large. She puts her organizational expertise to work as the moderator of the most active extra-curricular group at York Catholic, Student Council. She encourages the students to create activities to build the school community like the talent show, the Gaelic Quest, and spirit activities connected to Homecoming. She works with the YC student leaders to then create activities to foster a dedication to the community at large. She led students to host a Trick or Treat Halloween Festival so deanery school parents could bring their children to a safe, family-oriented night of trick or treating and games throughout our school building. For several years she has encouraged students to raise money to help care for children with cancer through the Mini-THON which supports the Four Diamonds Fund at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. This year students raised over $20,000 exceeding their goal and setting a new bar of excellence. Through Student Council’s community outreach, Megan also leads YC Service Day at Leg Up Farm, and encourages donations to the Scarf and Mitten Tree at Christmas for Access York. Megan is an exemplary teacher and person. Her students understand they will be challenged by her, will take on a heavy workload, and will extend themselves academically, yet they look forward to learning from her. She not only teaches history, but she provides an outstanding example of social grace and gentle caring for others. We are honored to have a Master Teacher like Mrs. Megan Wertz here at York Catholic. left to right: Lindsey China ‘16, YC Girls’ Lacrosse Head Coach Rob Linthicum, Kayleigh Pokrivka ‘17. 7 yc teacher leaves a legacy MIKE STAAB ‘70 Mike Staab ’70 has made his mark at York Catholic High School over the past 38 years teaching students English grammar and composition. His dedication always reached beyond the classroom through his involvement with athletics and extra-curricular activities. He started teaching at YC in the fall of 1978, coached track and field, was the assistant coach for the 1979 Girls’ Basketball State Championship team, and was named Golf Coach of the Year after leading the team to their second straight League Championship. He was also a Pep Club Moderator, Locker Supervisor, SADD Moderator, Stage Crew Director, Flag Honor Guard Moderator, and Faculty Representative. This past spring, Mike announced his retirement. We asked his friend and colleague, Mary Anne (Keffer) Burnside ’87, to give us insight into this special man: When first approached about contributing an article regarding the retirement of longtime York Catholic English teacher, Mike Staab ‘70, I must admit that for the briefest of moment, I hesitated to agree to it. After all, how does one even begin to adequately recognize an individual who has so selflessly given of himself for over thirty-eight years to his beloved Alma Mater? After much reflection, I decided to keep it light-hearted and fun, the way that my dear friend Mike would want it. I put our teachers, administration, and staff to the test by giving them the assignment of describing our esteemed colleague in five words or less (as you will see, some of them had difficulty following directions!). Here are some of their responses: 8 “Mentor, Teammate, Inspiration, and Friend!” Patrick McShane, Social Studies Dept. “Mike always says something kind!” - Eva Hess, Director of Guidance “Kind and great sense of humor” - Pat Lichty, History Dept. “Friendly; always has a smile.” - Betsy (Pistner) Hanuska ‘87, Math Dept. “Always had a friendly word and smile” - Roxanne Castellanos, AAC & Advancement “A true gentleman and good friend” - Tracey McGraw, English Dept. “Family man and sports fanatic” - Kelly Anderson, Phys. Ed. Dept. “Gentleman, Thoughtful, Helpful, Funny, Dedicated” Marie Krueger, Spiritual Life “Kind, considerate and loyal... sounds like a Boy Scout!” Carolyn Obermeier, AAC “Mike is warm, caring and friendly. He is also generous, thoughtful and helpful.” Martine Kuoh, Language Dept. “Bowls us all over!” - Irene Woodard, Religion Dept. “His dedication is to be admired! His personality is fabulously full of surprises!!” Sheila Gick, Guidance Dept. “True pro off the greens.” - Ann Clinton, Religion Dept. “Welcoming, friendly and supportive” - Katie Lalic, Art Dept. “Kindness Personified” - Cecilia Mezza, Fine Arts Dept. “Always there with a welcoming word and smile to both newbies and oldies.” - Janet Bajor, Art Dept. “King of Junior High Lunch” Mary Anne (Keffer) Burnside ‘87, Math Dept. “Friend, Co-worker, Teacher, Golfer, Coach” - Rosemarie Kocher, Math Dept. “Book lover, Anglophile, food lover, dedicated, caring” - Terri Eline, English Dept. “Mike Staab is always thoughtful, courteous, funny, loyal and caring” - Denise Nichols, Business Dept. “Competitive, talkative, friendly and funny” – Amy Clarkson, Math Dept. “Genuine, Intense, Heart of Gold” - Heather Hoffman ‘91, Advancement “Always smiling and bright” Nicole Ivovich, International Student Center “An icon of York Catholic whose presence will be greatly missed” - Christine Schneider ‘87, Science Dept. Mike Staab ‘70 In all seriousness, it has been an honor and privilege to have worked alongside this professional educator, mentor, coach, and true friend. We are indebted to Mike for his contributions to our school community. Many of us are also blessed to have been his students and we hope to live up to his high ideals. Mr. Michael Staab’s legacy for York Catholic is so fitting. He chose to remember YC in the ways that are close to his heart: His generous contribution in memory of his brother, Kevin Staab ’83, welcomed Mike and his wife, Diana (Klinedinst) ’76, into the Gaelic Society. Most importantly, his gift shows his love of York Catholic by benefitting: • The purchase of “Fighting Irish” golf bags for the golf team • The revitalization of classroom 210 which was his home for so many years • The James M. Forjan Endowment Fund in support of teacher salaries We thank Mike for his love of York Catholic and the talents he has shared in so many ways, whether in the classroom or on the athletic court or golf course. We wish him well. 9 MY YORK CATHOLIC EXPERIENCE Meghan Freed ‘16 AP Calculus Students Raise the Bar Nine other students earned 5’s in other disciplines, and we congratulate them as well: AP History with teacher Megan Wertz Annie Javitt DJ Nichols Andrew Polson makes final adjustments Valedictorian Meghan Freed and Salutatorian Lauren Hand Graduation—the landmark event in every high school senior’s life when he or she officially completes his or her secondary education and transitions from student to alumni. For me, it felt surreal to stand in the auditorium among my peers, in our green and gold caps and gowns, surrounded by our families, friends, and teachers, all there to witness this great milestone in our lives. There was a mix of emotions within the Class of 2016, a combination of joy and sadness, nostalgia, excitement, and trepidation about the future. After dreaming of this day for years, it was difficult to believe it was finally here. As I stood at the podium to give my valedictory address, I came to comprehend this was the last time I would be together with my entire class. I remember my first time in this auditorium on the opening day of seventh grade, feeling both excited and a little nervous about the coming years. However, as time passed by, I made amazing friends and knew I had found a home at YC. 10 In my final days at York Catholic, I knew this school had prepared me well for college, in more ways than just for academic rigor of the college curriculum. York Catholic has taught me discipline, both in my studies and in my life. I was pushed to work hard and persevere, qualities which I still value. York Catholic has taught me the importance of caring for others because these are the same people who will lift you up when you are down, and you will support each other until the end. Happy graduates – Kiersten Reed, Emily Laslo, Katie Gordon YC has always been a part of my family, as my parents, Joe ‘89 and Beth (Gentry) Freed ‘89, and my grandfather, Leonard Freed ‘62 are proud alumni of York Catholic High School. They have always had a positive attitude towards the school and continue to support YC to this day. My parents chose to send my brother and me here because they believed it is a place where we could grow and excel. I think I proved them right and made them proud with all of my accomplishments. I am glad to be a member of the class of 2016, a unique group of talented scholars, athletes, musicians, artists, and wonderful individuals. We have always supported each other and worked together to accomplish greatness, including leaving our mark on YC with our academic honors, athletic titles, successful musicals, impressive Mini-THON donations, and the inaugural Gaelic Quest. I know that York Catholic is a place where you can develop not only intellectually but also spiritually, with the help of teachers who truly care about you. You can succeed in many different areas here, and you do not have to be afraid to be yourself because there will always be a spot for you in the York Catholic family. Finally, as I move forward, I am excited to apply the values and skills I learned at YC to my life in college and beyond. AP Statistics online Samuel Pawlikowski Perfect AP Calculus Class front row: Lauren Hand, Madison Dormer, Brooke Ricks, Meghan Freed. Back row, Jason Taylor, Samuel Pawlikowski, Paul Weisser, Luke Brennan, Bryce Floyd, Steven Ream, Mr. Phillip Autrey. Missing from photo, Jongwoo Ha, Yeon Jung Kim. It is simple mathematics, really. It is what you get when you add twelve motivated and mathematically minded students and one master teacher. You get twelve 5’s on the AP Calculus exam. That might equate to a royal flush, a grand slam, or perhaps a tour de force. Phillip Autrey’s entire AP Calculus class did just that this May, earning twelve perfect scores. This past school year, York Catholic offered AP courses in English, Chemistry, Calculus, and US History. Two seniors completed online AP Statistics this year as well. AP courses offer college level rigor, and AP students dedicate long hours of study that begins during the summer months and ends with a national exam in May. AP courses are offered through College Board; all exams are graded on a scale of 1-5 with 5 the highest possible score. Many colleges and universities accept a score of three or higher for credit, a motivating factor for the students enrolled. York Catholic students have always done exceptionally well on AP exams. This spring a total of 55 tests were taken, and 21 of those were awarded 5’s, 21 were awarded 4’s, and 9 earned 3’s. That calculates to 96% earning 3 or higher, an outstanding result! Mr. Autrey and his class of twelve AP Calculus mathematicians who earned 5’s are as follows: Luke Brennan Yeon Jung Kim Madison Dormer Samuel Pawlikowski Bryce Floyd Steven Ream Meghan Freed Brooke Ricks Jongwoo Ha Jason Taylor Lauren Hand Paul Weisser AP English Literature and Composition with teacher Terri Eline Lindsey China Lauren Corbitt Meghan Freed Lauren Hand Madeline Kepner Paul Weisser College Board acknowledges AP Scholars, students who earn scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. This year we congratulate AP Scholars Lauren Corbitt and Jason Taylor. AP Scholars with Honor are students who earn scores of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams. This year we congratulate Meghan Freed, Lauren Hand, Samuel Pawlikowski, and Paul Weisser. York Catholic is proud of our students’ outstanding accomplishments under the leadership of our exceptional teachers. We congratulate them all for a job well done! 11 HONORING OUR SISTER Dedication Bricks The York Catholic High School Grotto is a beautiful area located on the east side of campus. The Grotto was created through the generous donations of many friends, family, and students. A statue of Mary and a rock garden form a peaceful site for prayer and reflection. Surrounding the area is a walkway of engraved bricks dedicated to the honor and memory of family, friends, and classmates. You can purchase an engraved brick for $50. Complete the form found at www.yorkcatholic.org. Go to Current Students/Resources/ Forms and Documents and scroll to the bottom section titled Advancement. Click on Grotto Brick Order Form and forward it to YC. Then be sure to visit the Grotto the next time you come to YC to see your loved one honored on the brick path. You would be hard pressed to name a teacher whose talent made more of an impact on our students in recent years than Sister Gilmary Beagle, IHM. When she passed away last year, there were so many written tributes that came into school in her honor that a book was created for her sister, Barb, to cherish. English teacher, Terri Eline, wrote, “She told anyone who would listen how she loved York Catholic, how she found her home here, and how she ‘bled green and gold.’” So it was only fitting that Sister leave her mark in the very foundation of our school, literally in the bricks that pave the Grotto. This past spring, past and present faculty members gathered to pay tribute to Sister and place her brick where her memory will forever by anchored. TALENT NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED York Catholic faculty and staff also share their talents outside of school and in the past few months, we have had two members of the YC family featured in national publications. “Love” in the Family The Skyes the Limit clockwise from lower left: Terri Eline, Carolyn Obermeier, Ann Clinton, Irene Woodard, Peg Allton, Myke Warner place a brick in the Grotto in memory of Sister Gilmary Beagle. Tracey McGraw, Tennison McGraw, T.J. McGraw, Jim Short York Catholic’s McGraw family was recently featured in the spring 2016 issue of NetPlay, the official magazine of the United States Tennis Association - Middle States. Tracey McGraw is an English teacher at YC while her son, T.J., is a junior, and daughter, Tennison, is a 7th grader. All three have been involved in volunteering and participating with Tennis for Kids in central PA. Tracey said, “I feel as if I’ve been playing tennis all my life. I started playing because of my dad. This was during the 1970s. Tennis was a family sport for us, both of my parents played, as well as my older sister. When I was old enough to work, I started at the tennis courts at a private swim and tennis club in Fairfield, Ohio. I also played tennis on my high school’s team. In college, we moved to PA and I played intramural tennis. I was never a great player, I only played for fun. But I 12 always knew that I wanted my kids to be able to enjoy the game as much as I did, so I was so happy when both were willing to pick up tennis racquets and try the sport. I have seen my own kids grow with this program. My son now plays tennis at York Catholic. My daughter has improved in her skills. They have both grown to enjoy tennis as a lifelong sport.” Maida Connor, YC’s Executive Director of Advancement, and her husband, Michael Pesare, share their home with one Borzoi and a few Skye Terriers, one of the oldest dog breeds dating back to Queen Victoria. They were recently featured in a 5-page interview in the March 2016 issue of Dogs in Review, an internationally respected publication of purebred dogs. Maida and Michael are breeders of Champion and Best-in-Show Skye Terriers under the prefix Gleanntan. Gleanntan was recently named Skye Terrier Club of America’s Breeder of the Year. When they aren’t working at their professional jobs, Maida and Michael may be found at dog shows coast to coast, on TV when they win Best of Breed at Westminster Kennel Club or the National Dog Show, or simply hanging out with the dogs. Irish Spirit On Display Marie Krueger, York Catholic’s Director of Spiritual Life, inspired us by wearing her “Catch Our Irish Spirit” shirt on her recent visit to Buckingham Palace in London. So now we are asking you to send us pictures of you on vacation wearing your York Catholic apparel. Photos can be sent to info@yorkcatholic.org. By sending your photo you are giving us permission to publish it and share it on social media. We look forward to seeing where you’ve shown your Irish spirit! Marie Krueger Michael Pesare & Maida Connor with Dexter and Sunny 13 treasure 14 ESTATE & PLANNED GIVING WHY WE TREASURE OUR IRISH SPIRIT Charitable giving is often more spontaneous than it is planned and thought out. With the exception of a weekly tithe or regular contribution to the collection basket at church, most giving is out of reflex or direct solicitation such as the purchase of a raffle ticket, orders of Girl Scout cookies, or attendance at a fund raiser or other special event. The richness of York Catholic may not be readily visible as you gaze upon a tired building, however, I urge anyone to look again – the very real richness is in the faces of our students who are here to learn, to grow, to embrace our pillars of faith, mind, heart, and family, and to emerge as compassionate, morally centered young adults who will enhance the world with their faith, minds, and hearts. Steve Carr, Esq. ‘74 Maida Connor, CFRE, Executive Director of Advancement Charitable organizations can struggle financially if they are totally dependent upon spontaneous and irregular contributions. It is critical for the continued health of one’s favorite charity that supporters engage in a formal plan of giving. Most planned giving comes in the form of a bequest in a will. But studies have concluded that only 50-55% of people have wills, and of that, only 10% of wills contain bequests to charitable institutions. An overwhelming majority of people either intentionally make no provision or forget to remember causes that are near and dear to them. Furthermore, many people don’t realize that it is generally better to donate while still living rather than waiting until their death. The reason is that there are added tax benefits to giving while still alive. While one should not jeopardize his or her financial security, one should strongly consider a course of planned giving while still alive. There are also many different ways that one can give rather than just making a cash contribution. These include gifts of stock, retirement funds, or other tangible assets, life insurance policies, and less well known methods such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts. These different methods afford flexibility and permit the donor to balance the needs of the donor and the donor’s family with the needs of the charitable organization. Attorneys and financial planners are well versed in the various ways by which you can make a contribution to York Catholic and other favorite charities. Please discuss a course of planned giving with yours as soon as possible. SAVE THE DATE NOVEMBER 29, 2016 Please plan to participate in our third online “Giving Tuesday” effort on Tuesday, November 29. Last year, parents, alumni, and friends collectively gave over $16,000 in support of the YC Annual Fund during the one day online gift campaign. This year, with the help of our 8,000+ Greensleeves readers, and friends around the globe, we hope to break new records. Online giving is easy, but must be done on November 29 to count towards our Annual Fund/”Giving Tuesday” project. Please circle the date, and plan to join our online donors, by visiting www.yorkcatholic.org/donate. Many thanks! Maida Connor During the past year a few people have commented to me about York Catholic looking the same as it did years ago, some even remarking that maybe if the school were fancier, more donations would follow. As someone who walks the building each week, I understand comments about the building looking old. If the walls could talk, they would say they’ve earned more than a few wrinkles along with the laugh lines, but oh the stories they would tell of favorite teachers, athletic victories, memorable proms and musicals, and students who met academic challenges to proudly display diplomas. This school has earned every scratch honestly and has participated in the raising of over 9,500 alumni – I daresay it has collected a few fatigue scars. Our Irish Spirit matters because we care about every student and every person, as well as respecting what YC represents to our graduates, our students, our teachers, our families, and our staff. This isn’t only a building, this is a community. “Catch Our Irish Spirit” isn’t just a quick tag line, it’s a proud herald to a rich history, a faithbased education, and a beacon to a promising future for our students. That is the reason we choose to teach, to work, to care, and to give time, talent, and treasures to YC. We are heartened by an increase in donations received this fiscal year which totaled over $830,000; it’s been a very significant year of fundraising at YC. Because of alumni, donors, and friends who gave from the heart, we revitalized 8 classrooms, increased the Forjan Focus Fund for Teacher Salaries, accepted over $400,000 in tuition assistance monies, welcomed new funds for financial assistance and academic achievement, increased our “Giving Tuesday” participation to over $16,000 in one day giving, and grew our Annual Fund. The impact of philanthropy is felt here quickly and with great appreciation. Because of our community of caring donors, students study here benefitted by tuition assistance, teachers returned ready to spark intellectual curiosity and foster talent whether it is musical, athletic, or academic, and areas of the school have been refreshed. Thank you for joining with us in celebration of Irish Spirit, faith-based education, and a school that matters greatly in the formation of young lives. We may not be the fanciest, but we have great students, incredibly devoted teachers and coaches, and we have a bright future – even the building is smiling. While reading this year’s donor report, please know your gift, whatever the amount, to whatever fund or project, has impact. Please remember why you care about York Catholic, and celebrate your “Irish Spirit.” If you haven’t visited in a while, please come back – even if some of it looks the same – that’s ok – I promise you’ll find the energy amazing. Thank you for sharing your time, talent, and treasure! I believe there is an energy here which is palpable and invigorating. The talent in the community of YC, particularly among the students and the teachers, is impressive. The day after school ended, the halls were quiet, the cafeteria was dark, and I found myself tearing up, it was simply too quiet. Where was our boisterous Irish Spirit? Class of 2016 Gaelic Quest winners 15 LEGACY TREASURE Mary Jane Beazley ‘72 children, their education is not a family priority. Now that I find myself in the happy position of being able to provide some support to York Catholic’s tuition assistance program, how could I NOT do that? Why would I NOT want to help make it possible for other children to benefit from a York Catholic education, to NOT have the good fortune to study under dedicated teachers in an environment where every student is known by name and where every student’s talents and abilities are nurtured and deficits are addressed? Coach Jim Forjan & Mary Jane Beazley ‘72 When asked why I contribute to the financial stability of York Catholic, my initial response is to ask in return how could I NOT contribute to the ongoing work and growth of a place that was so central to my life? How could I NOT want to do what I could to further the mission of a place where I learned lessons that sparked my curiosity, opened doors to unknown worlds, guided my professional work, and continue to inform my daily life? I was fortunate to grow up in a family where education was a priority, and a Catholic education at least through high school graduation was never questioned. My brothers and sisters and I grew up in a home where books were plentiful and readily available, and in our family getting your library card at the Martin Memorial Public Library was a significant event, almost as important as receiving your First Holy Communion or making your Confirmation. After graduating from York Catholic, it was just assumed we would continue on to the college of our choice to study whatever we wanted. Mom and Dad never tried to influence our choice of academic major or career choice, just encouraged us to study what we loved and pursue a career to which we could whole-heartedly commit our talents and energies. But not all children are as fortunate as we were. Some families simply cannot afford the tuition expense of a Catholic education. Some families decide that the district public school or another private school may provide greater educational opportunities for their children. And, sadly, for some 16 Mom and Dad firmly believed in the spiritual/moral/ethical value of a Catholic education, and they knew that in order to make sure that York Catholic was able to provide that, it would require a faculty of exceptional and dedicated teachers who chose to teach at York Catholic not as a job or as a career, but as a vocation. But Mom and Dad were also very aware that, Catholic teachers’ salaries being what they are, making the choice to teach at York Catholic meant making a significant sacrifice in salary earnings. Which is why they established the Forjan Focus Fund, a financial program to help York Catholic attract and retain the very best teachers by making salaries more attractive and, perhaps, lessening the sacrifice required. I can’t hope to match their generosity, but I can do my part. A number of years ago, when I was teaching in a school in the Chicago Archdiocese, I was in the faculty room with some of the other teachers enjoying a quick lunch. As usually happened, our conversation was about some of the students, which led to some reminiscing about our own school days. As we left the faculty room, one of my colleagues said to me that she couldn’t help but notice that whenever I mentioned York Catholic, I smiled, and I told only happy stories about my high school years. Why wouldn’t I? I had a marvelous time in my four years at York Catholic. I remember with great fondness the friends I made there and I hope all have led lives filled with happiness and love and laughter. My years of teaching and working as a social worker in the schools have left me with a boundless appreciation for those who stood in the front of the classroom and sat at the big desks – the English teachers who opened my eyes to the beauty of good writing, ageless fiction, and helped me master some of the mechanics of putting thoughts to paper; the History teachers who taught me to never be satisfied with just what was in the books but to look for additional information, and how knowing what came before informs how we understand the present; the Math teachers who struggled with my math ineptness and celebrated with me when I finally “got it”; Sister Marian Delores Frantz, IHM, who never gave up in despair at my inability to remember all those conjugations of all those irregular French verbs and whose lessons made more of an impact than she might ever have imagined; and always Coach Forjan, one of the most decent, fair, evenhanded, and generous people you could ever hope to meet and who continues to be a vital part of the life at York Catholic. But, more than almost any other person in my life, I cherish my four years working with Sister Regina Cecilia, IHM, who was the choral music teacher. I will never be able to adequately convey how important she has remained in my life, how lasting her influence has been, and it was one of the great joys of my life that in the few years before her death in April 2015, we were able to reconnect and our relationship moved from teacher/student to that of friends. This is why I give to York Catholic. And I would encourage all York Catholic alums to reflect on what they gained from their time at York Catholic and then consider how they might assist in contributing to the on-going mission of a place that helped in their growth and development. Why do I give to York Catholic? How could I not? ANNUAL FUND SPRING CELEBRATION This month, York Catholic kicked off SUPPORTS ANNUAL FUND the 2016-17 Annual Fund Campaign, chaired by Coach Jim Forjan, with a theme of “Values Matter” and we hope we can rely on you for your support. A strong Annual Fund directly impacts the school and makes a YC education possible for our students. It supports the educational and spiritual experiences of our students by providing operating monies in the following ways: • Offsets the cost per student so that tuition amounts may remain affordable for everyone. We know families make a significant financial sacrifice to send their children to YC. The Annual Fund, joined by deanery parish monies, supports each student by making up the difference ($2K per student) between the cost charged per student and actual cost per student. • Provides financial aid for families • Supports enrichment and extracurricular activities for YC students, including music and the arts • Enhances technology available to students and faculty The Annual Fund leverages unrestricted dollars to make our beloved York Catholic the special and transformational place we all know it to be. It fuels a mission-driven community and brings the values of a YC education to life for our students. York Catholic makes a tremendous difference in our students’ lives. YC students take the values they learn here out into the world. Because of their experiences at York Catholic, they are enriched with wisdom and compassion, and in turn contribute to the community in significant ways. Your contributions to York Catholic make this possible. For this we are truly grateful. You can support the Annual Fund by returning your valued donation in the envelope provided in this publication or by donating online through the YC website at www.yorkcatholic.org. Thank you for your generous support. York Catholic kicked-off its inaugural Spring Celebration on April 9th on a day that was reminiscent of a more wintery one. Despite the colder weather outside, there was warmth abound inside the Country Club of York where our event was celebrated amidst the YC family in support of the Annual Fund. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible by providing sponsorships, purchasing tickets, and being present at the event which netted over $50,000! The event was awash in all things spring including cheerful spring colors, butterfly bidding paddles, wildflower seedlings, and studentcrafted floral centerpieces. Graciously chaired by Dr. Tom McGann and his wife, Kathy, the program included a robust live and silent auction, shamrock light-up pins, and impressive musical performances from YC alums and students, Katie Gordon ’16, Lisa Pantano ‘83, Emily Falvey ‘99, and Adin Brubaker ‘14. Perhaps the most memorable aspect of the evening, however, came from the beautiful words shared by Ms. Chamaine Carlo, YC parent, and Fr. Jonathan Sawicki, YC’s Chaplain. In her remarks, Ms. Carlo shared her perspective as a parent who tragically lost a son to violence and who made the very deliberate decision to give her younger son the education he deserved: “It’s such a good feeling to know that there are so many good people that he is going to come in contact with.” Fr. Sawicki eloquently articulated what York Catholic truly means to the community by providing “…a truly safe, loving environment…a family…where we are saving lives and we are saving futures.” This is why York Catholic matters. This is what your support and partnership make possible for our students. Thank you again for making YC’s Spring Celebration such a “blooming” success. We are already excited for spring 2017! So how do I approach the day in prayer to start my classes? Open Division: Mark Carr ‘89, Steve Carr ‘74, Steve Gekas, Marty Sowa I pull the York Catholic chalice out of the chapel. This is the chalice we use at every school liturgy. On the bottom is inscribed “Restoration in Memory of Michael J. Cawley, NYFD, 9-11-01.” Out of a connection of a last name, Fr. Cawley who taught in the Religion Department back then, reached out to this family and soon became good friends with them. The family donated the funds to the school to restore the chalice and to serve as a memorial for their son. Think about how profound that really is...Michael ran into the towers on 9/11, he put it all on the line, he laid down his life for his friends and neighbors, he sacrificed himself so that others might live...and at Mass we celebrate the sacrifice of Christ in this very cup. When Michael Cawley was young, he went to Archbishop Malloy High School in Queens, NY, and loved every minute of it. And we treasure the inspiration of Michael Cawley. 19 Thank You for Enriching YC with Your Kindness & Generosity! On behalf of the students, teachers, and entire YC community, many special thanks to you, our friends, who have generously given time, talent, and treasure to benefit York Catholic during academic year 2015-2016. Volunteerism increased as parents, alumni, and friends gave time freely to serve on our school board and committees; to participate in community service projects, Career Day, Parent Ambassadors, the Senior Student Breakfast, Open Houses, Special Events, HSO, AA, and so many other athletic, cultural, and academic endeavors. Thank you all for your time and talent! Donations also increased notably this past fiscal year totaling over $832,000! From our hearts, we offer great appreciation for the many gifts received to support the Annual Fund, Tuition Assistance, and the Forjan Focus Fund for Teacher Salaries, Classroom Revitalization efforts, Athletic Programs, Musical Programs, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts.
