May 2013, Esbjerg The Task Group CLIMATE (TG-C) - Ministerium für Landwirtschaft, Umwelt und ländliche Räume des Landes Schleswig-Holstein - Innenministerium des Landes Schleswig-Holstein - Niedersächsisches Ministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft, Verbraucherschutz und Landesentwicklung TASK I. Increase the linkage between climate change and coastal protection, nature protection, the adaptability of the Wadden Sea ecosystem and spatial planning → Prepara$on of a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy - Nationalparkverwaltung Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer TASK II. Initiate a trilateral study on sustainable solutions to balance the expected sediment deficits - Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment - Province of Groningen - Naturstyrelsen - Kystdirektoratet - Esbjerg Kommune → Performance of a trilateral desk study on the sedimentary functioning of tidal inlet systems TASK III. Initiate a project developing model spatial plans for pilot sites in the Wadden Sea region with the aim of developing a practicable spatial planning methodology to meet the challenges of climate change → Performance of a trilateral workshop on climate change adaptation in spatial planning Chair: Kystdirektoratet Secretary: Common Wadden Sea Secretariat The future challenge Sea level rise, storm surge and ground water www.nature.com Climate change and important aspects Safety of the inhabitants Enhanced sea level rise and storm surges Climate change Precipitation patterns Temperature Maintenance of the natural structures and functions WADDEN SEA RESEARCH National Conservation of the characteristic biodiversity Maintenance of the scenic qualities of the landscape Trilateral Long-term impact and tipping points Geomorphological sedimentation processes Waning barriers and ebb-tidal deltas Photo: Norbert Hecker Drowning intertidal flats and deteriorating salt marshes Photo: Norbert Hecker Trilateral desk study Main tasks on behalf of the entire Wadden Sea area: (i) Re-evaluation of existing data given the uncertainties in the measurements; (ii) Evaluation of conceptual models that aim at understanding and predicting sedimentary behavior of sediment sharing systems; (iii) (iv) Determination which model to use (e.g. ASMITA) and the scale on which these models should be used; Modeling tidal basins with chosen model(s) (now and in the future). Partners: • The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, The Netherlands (Deltaprogramme Wadden Area) • Deltares (Secretary) • Danish Coastal Authority, Denmark, KU; • Min. für Landwirtschaft, Umwelt und ländliche Raume des Landes SchleswigHolstein, Germany (Schleswig-Holstein); • Nds. Landesbetrieb für Wasserwirtschaft, Küsten- und Naturschutz, Germany (Lower Saxony); Danish focus Safety of the inhabitants •Quantification of the current and recent net gain of sediment (sediment budget) in front of Wadden Sea Islands and on shoals and ebb-tidal deltas and of the potential sources (Sylt, Germany and Skallingen/Jutland West Coast); • Modeling of sediment transport changes, sediment redistribution and morphological change under different SLR-scenarios; • A better understanding of current large-scale tidal inlet dynamics and supposed inlet and tidal flats responses to SLR and climate deterioration; • ‘Making room’ for new tidal marsh formation under different SLR-scenarios; • How will future morphological change affect surge levels and waves in the Wadden Sea and the safety levels of the inhabitants? • How do we best focus our measuring and modeling efforts in the coming years in relation to CC issues?
