Fine Foods stores fundraise for local charity
South Hill Fine Foods and Central
Butte Fine Foods recently teamed up to
help local kids and families participate
in
recreational
programs
and
services. The two stores held a special
fundraising event from February 19-21
in support of the YMCA’s Strong Kids
Campaign.
Funds were raised by selling hot dogs
in the parking lot of South Hill Fine
Foods. Because the event coincided
with Moose Jaw hosting the Scotties,
shoppers also had the opportunity
to play a mini curling game for a
chance to win Scotties products. Perry
Chambers, general manager of South
Hill Fine Foods, says it was a great way
to show support for the Scotties and
have fun, while also raising funds for a
great cause.
“We sponsored this so the YMCA
could raise money for their Strong
Kids Campaign,” said Chambers. “We
like to see kids get a chance to play, but
some of them don’t have the money to
get into sports.
“This is our way of raising money for
this cause.”
Chambers says they were pleased with
the turnout for the promotion. In
total they raised $937. South Hill Fine
Foods and Central Butte Fine Foods
then matched that amount for a final
total of $1,874.
Corinne Damaskie, manager of the
Strong Kids Campaign, appreciated the
effort by saying, “We are so glad that
they came on board.” It was the ideal
time to hold the fundraiser; February
15 to March 15 has been declared
Strong Kids Month.
The YMCA’s annual goal is to raise
$150,000 for the Strong Kids Campaign.
This month-long fundraising drive
meets the bulk of that target, as
Damaskie notes they hope to raise
$100,000 by March 15. Damaskie says
this was a great way to kick things off.
The Strong Kids Campaign serves a
great need.
“I think a lot of people don’t recognize

“The Strong Kids Campaign is an
annual campaign that all YMCAs
participate in. It raises funds for
families or youth who may not be able
to afford a YMCA program, service,

The Sparkle & Shine PRISM Awards,
sponsored by the Business Women of
Moose Jaw, is just around the corner
to be held in Moose Jaw on Saturday,
March 7th. If you haven’t got your
tickets, now is the time!
Members of the local organization
are women who serve the community
in many capacities, either through
owning their own business or working
in a professional capacity. Through
the PRISM awards, they are able to
recognize other women in our region
who have impacted those around
them. In the last issue of the Moose
Jaw Express, we featured three of the
executive of the Business Women of
Moose Jaw. In this continuation, we
would like to introduce you to Crystal

As far as commenting on the PRISM
awards event, Lenise says it is going
to be “classy and fun but sort of on
a shoestring budget” because the
organization wants all the profits to go
toward the charity of choice, which is
Moose Jaw Transition House. She also
mentioned that the entertainment,

Canadian author shares passion for literacy
PAGE A8 • MOOSEJAWEXPRESS.COM • Week of March 2, 2015
Mystery writer Brenda Chapman loves
to inspire others to read and write.
Chapman was recently in Moose Jaw
to watch her daughter, Lisa Weagle of
Team Canada, play in the Scotties but
took the time out of her busy schedule
to share her passion for literacy with
the Moose Jaw Multicultural Council
(MJMC).
Chapman began by discussing how she
became a writer. She says she always
loved writing but never felt that she
would become a writer. Eventually,
Chapman wrote a book for her kids
called Running Scared.
“My youngest daughter was 9-yearsold when she read it and she told me,
‘Mom you write just like a real author.’
That kind of gave me the confidence
to start sending my manuscript off
to publishers,” said Chapman. “It
got accepted and I have kept writing.
Running Scared turned into a series
of four books. From there, I got into
writing for adults.”
Chapman began writing a series of
adult literacy novels that are set in her
Ottawa neighbourhood. Currently,
there are four novels in the Anna Sweet
stories with another due in 2016. These
books are written in plain and simple
English to help adults and newcomers
learn to read. Chapman was first
approached by a publisher to take on
the project and she was happy to accept.
“I taught in the field of adult literacy

have to invest in something risky to get a better
your benefits by including mutual funds, GIC’S and

Taking into consideration the changes that have
taken place in the economy in past years and at
present, she stressed the need to set goals and make
sure to have the right strategy to help sustain you
through the downturns. That means that you have
to know what your income needs are. You have to
consider the fact that you may need long-term care
in the future. Are you prepared for that?
The cost of long-term care in Saskatchewan is one
of the lowest in Canada but it is not included in our
health care coverage. Insurance for that eventuality
is something people need to plan for in their fifties;
however, most people are not thinking along those
lines at that age.
Private capital investments were touched on but the
returns on those are usually several years down the
road. The subjects of annuities also kept coming
up and since RRSP’s must be converted by the
end of the year a person turns 71, some people are
choosing that time to invest in annuities. A life time
annuity, Ms. Enns noted, does not generate as much
income as a 10 year annuity.
She was willing to talk about the concerns of the
audience and there were a few lively discussions.

Food based stock menu looks attractive
By Ron Walter For Moose Jaw Express
Food-based companies are served up more often on the royalty trust
menu than other sectors.
Six food service royalties come to mind – A&W, Boston Pizza, Pizza
Pizza, Keg Restaurants, Service Hospitality and Diversified Royalty.
Buying units in these trusts does not buy you part of the business. The
food trusts were designed to pay private owners a steady stream of cash
skimmed off the top. The public is allowed to buy in.
Typically a food royalty involves exchange of the company trademark to
a trust.
The trust rents the trademark back for a royalty on a percentage of all
sales, and pays out a stream of cash.
Everybody supposedly lives happily ever after – trademark owners and
investors. While food trusts are quite stable they do ride the price cycle
trends up and down.
When new stores are taken into the trust the trademark owners receive
shares in exchange for trademark rights. Food trusts’ main risk is a
horrific event like an E Coli or Salmonella outbreak originating from one
of the food outlets and generating wide publicity.
A&W Income Fund, priced at $26.94 and yielding 4.8 per cent, is one of
the oldest food trusts. Since early 2002, A&W has returned 183 per cent
gain.
Since inception the fund has paid out $15.61 cents per unit for another
173 per cent gain.
The average annual total return gain: a remarkable 25 per cent a year. Yet
many market analysts bash these trusts because restaurants are so risky.
Boston Pizza Royalties, $22.40, yielding 5.5 per cent, returned 112 per
cent price gain since inception in 2003 and paid $15.22 for another 148
per cent return. Annual average total gain: 22 per cent.
Both Boston Pizza and A&W unit holders have benefited from five year
national expansion plans. The question is: How will expansion go when
the plan is complete? Tim Horton’s faced the same issue with a somewhat
troubled move into the USA.
Both the former are national based. Pizza Pizza, $15.45, yielding 5.1 per
cent, is mostly Ontario-based with expansion under way across Canada,
offering more risk and possibly more reward.
The company delivered 101 per cent price gain since 2003, and since 2006
returned 44 per cent in cash for an excellent annual return, even though
less than the previous two.
The Keg Income and the SIR Royalty are both trendier operations relying
more on good economic times and liquor sales. Both are relatively small
and have had variable payouts over the years.
The Keg, $19.55 and yielding 4.9 per cent, returned 86.5 per cent since
2003 with cash distributions returning another140 per cent, about 20 per
cent annual return.
SIR, $13.65, yielding 8.4 per cent to match the risk, has returned 38 per
cent price gain since 2003 and 108 per cent in cash distribution. Total
return: 16 per cent a year.
A new trust Diversified Royalty, $2.60, yielding 7.2 cent, came out at
$2.43 in 2014.
Diversified is currently a food trust, raising $100 million for the company
owning Original Joe’s and getting a five per cent royalty.
Diversified operators were associated putting together A&W and the Keg
trusts and have extensive banking experience. Those skills will assist in
building a merchant bank royalty trust similar to profitable Alaris Corp.,
by dipping into a broad menu of opportunities.
CAUTION: Remember when investing, consult your adviser and do your
homework before buying any security. Bizworld does not recommend
investments.

T
he 2015 Scottie’s Tournament of
Hearts wrapped up last week and
Jennifer Jones’ Team Manitoba rink
returned to the winners’ podium
for the first time since 2010. There
was talk that, regardless of her winning the
Olympic gold at Sochi 2014, she was no longer
the top dog in Canadian Women’s curling; what
with younger names like Rachel Homan and Val
Sweeting skipping teams (Canada and Alberta,
respectively) many had thought were the new
faces of the sport. Jones dispelled those notions
by winning the round robin with a 10-1 record,
defeating both of those teams in the process.
They played Sweeting’s Alberta rink twice more
in the playoffs, one of which was Sunday night’s
6-5 thrilling final showdown.
With a big victory like this under Jones’ belt,
she’s assuredly poised to make a run at the
2018 Olympics before she passes that rink over
to teammate Kaitlyn Lawes who, I’ve got little
reason to believe, will be no worse a skip than
Jones is herself.
Val Sweeting’s Alberta rink falls in the finals for
the second year straight now, but it seems she’s
got the ability to hoist Alberta’s reigns for a long
time to come and will no doubt win a few titles
before her days are done.
The celebrity and seeming focal point of the
tournament was two-time returning champion
Rachel Homan. Her rink had dominated the
Scotties’ in both 2013 and 2014 and had me
dubbing her the Michael Jordan of ladies curling.
She played well this year, winning the bronze
medal, but didn’t seem to be as flawless as in the
years’ past. Maybe it was due to line-up changes,
the ice or late nights…Who knows? Either way,
Team Homan lost their Team Canada badge
and struggled through some grueling games
Saskatchewan favourite Stefanie Lawton was stellar the entire tournament. Though her
team was one win shy of a medal finish she had the strongest performance of the tournament.
against Saskatchewan to top out, in a respectable, third place.
But let’s talk about that team Saskatchewan. For the fourth year
straight, they finished in fourth place. One win shy of a medal.
As the saying goes: “always the bridesmaid, never a bride”. But,
no one would deny that they played a fantastic tournament.
They started off slow, a couple losses and real close battles but
piled it on late with a big winning streak and a perfect 9-1
massacre of eventual finalists Alberta.
Stefanie Lawton performed impeccably. She had the highest
shot percentage amongst skips and was named as a first team
tournament all-star. Another name of note was the youngster
Stephanie Schmidt. Schmidt, normally the alternate, was thrust
into duty just days before the games began, due to teammate
Sherri Singler suffering a last minute leg injury. Schmidt was
named a second team all-star and made what was, undoubtedly,
the best shot of the tournament in the 11th end of Saskatchewan’s
page playoff match against Team Canada. She busted out the
triple peel of a lifetime and cleared the house for what would
ultimately be their biggest win of the year.
Shots like that are what tournament co-chair Glenn Hagel says
made this tournament so meaningful for him. “Saskatchewan
made some great shots,” he told the Moose Jaw Express. “There’s
nothing better than hearing the fans celebrate for their team
like that. The applause nearly ripped the roof off.”
Furthermore, Hagel went on to say that the visitors and the
athletes were really blown away by the volunteers. The one
thing people mentioned the most was “how the volunteers
were always having a great time and they were always helpful
and smiling”.
“The event,” he continued, “was fantastic! An unqualified
success, however you look at it, in competition, facility,
attendance and the long-term implications of it.”
“We live in a time in which you have to bid for major events like
this,” said Hagel. “The Scotties’ verifies that we are capable of
hosting other serious events in the future. Will there be more
curling in Moose Jaw? Yes. But it’s a bit early to start speculating
when.”

Returning Champion Rachel Homan wasn’t as invincible as she had been in the past but churned out a
respectable third place finish nonetheless.
Ontario’s Julie Hastings’ disappointment shows here. She
had a decent tournament but lost the ever important battle
of Ontario against Tracy Horgan’s Sudbury rink. Now with
Rachel Homan back in the Ontario qualifiers its going to be
pretty tough for Hastings to qualify in 2016.
Kaitlyn Lawes has been cutting her teeth under the guidance of Jennifer Jones
since 2010. It’s only a matter of time before she skips championship teams of
her own.

sounds pretty impressive right
now as the struggle goes on to
understand all the nuances of
receiving the pensions that have
been earned over the past four-andone-half decades.
In my naive view of bureaucracy
I figured I would simply go to the
mailbox on the day of my eligibility
and there would be cheques in there
just waiting to be cashed. Instead
I am thinking of writing a book,
Pension Forms for Dummies, so as
to help the next dummy who gets
herself/himself caught up in the
maze of paperwork that is required
to obtain what is owed me through
past years of blood, sweat and tears.
I hate to admit this but the paperwork
for the federal government pensions
was straightforward and much
easier to navigate than the rules
and regulations put forward by the
private pension systems to which I
am tied.
My letters of application for the
pensions from past employers
were sent to the respective pension
agents well before the stated
deadlines, polite letters of request
accompanying the necessary forms.
Days, weeks and then months
passed and no response was
forthcoming from either company.
But finally one of the firms
responded with a large envelope of
explanations and more forms and
instructions. I was faced with not
one or two options for collection, but
eight different choices I could make,
with varying amounts listed for each
choice.
After a discussion with Housemate
who was called in for a consultation,
my choice was made, he signed the
spouse’s form provided and I figured
I would be receiving the amount
listed beside my choice.
I previously acknowledged my
naivety but it still shocked me to
learn that there would be another
hand taking some of that money
— my favourite federal government
tax person feels Ottawa requires
another share of my earnings. Plus
there’s a form in there if I want to
have extra taxes deducted monthly
to avoid a lump sum payment in
April.
Missing from the package of
regulations was the form saying
I respectfully decline to share
my earned pension with the tax
department. I got the look of
amusement from Housemate when
I continued to fret and vocalize my
opposition to paying the tax person
for what I don’t think he/she has
earned.
It was then that I figured the
declaration of The Republic of
Joyce would be one way of avoiding
deductions from my not-so-hefty
private pension payments.
I had heard about other individuals
declaring themselves exempt from
the rules of the tax person and other
government departments but I can’t
recall any successful outcome for
those folks. Housemate concurred,
laughing that as a Republic, I
would be ineligible for those two
government cheques to which I
have looked forward.
“Wouldn’t
there
be
a
notwithstanding clause that would
cover those cheques,” I ventured
to ask, knowing full well that I had
no choice but to share my largess
without any thought for withholding.
Big Brother always gets his share.
With my republic plans in tatters, I
finished signing the forms and have
resigned myself, once again, to the
proven fact that Stephen giveth and
Stephen also taketh. But does he
have to taketh so much?

The Moose Jaw Skating Club was in Maple
Creek on February 14 and 15 with children
aged 7 to 14, to compete in levels ranging
from Introductory to Junior Silver at the
regional competition. They had a very strong
showing, coming home with many medals.
They hope to do the same at the Jean Norman
tournament, a provincial competition featuring
star skaters and competitors.
The activity will not slow down, as they
prepare for their ice show. Named Peter Pan
on Ice, it will be held at Mosaic Place on
March 14 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at
the door, $15/adult, $10/child (ages 5-7) and
free for anyone under 4.

Museum adds to collection members
The Sukanen Ship Pioneer Village Museum had one
of the best years on record in terms of revenues,
restoration and new collections.
Museum Secretary Garry Davis told the annual
museum volunteer night the weather co-operated
for all events.
Every event did better with 76 vehicles and 16
member or museum vehicles at the Spring Fling car
show.
“The threshing bee was one of our best, two good
days of weather, big crowds.” The threshing event
unveiled a mural with a tribute to the evolution
of agriculture from oxen and horses to modern
machines in the Bill Young building.
New to the bee this year was a museum committee
doing food services, a garage sale and a 50-50 draw.
The Haunted Museum night had 617 people come
through in four hours.
The sold out July barbecue and dance was a new
project.
Volunteers did a tremendous amount of work with
over 4,000 hours logged. Not all hours were recorded.
Projects included upgraded floor in the kitchen, with
cupboards next, cleaning out a building near the
shop where “we found some items we didn’t know
we had.”
The hard-working ladies painted the school, coffee
room, kitchen and reorganized the hardware store.
Lorne Hart and Davis restored the 1955 Palm Dairies
Divco truck that replaced horse-drawn milk wagons.
Sterling Hornoi of Regina donated the paint job over
the winter.
The 1938 Willys coupe was restored. Ross Ramage
restored a walking plough. Gord Ross is making one
good horse drawn buggy out of two. A home-made
snowmobile, made from a Model A car and used by

the Lemieux family, was restored.
New artifacts included a hand-carved three-horse
carousel from Jerry Kaiser and a building for storage.
Kaiser is restoring a mechanical band that once was
in the Uptown Café.
Disbanding of the Rouleau Museum benefited the
Sukanen Ship Museum.
The Rouleau museum donated two rare tractors,
a rare stationary baler, a road grader and three
combines and a substantial amount of cash.
The donation showed their “confidence in our

stewardship.” Several Rouleau members were
welcomed into the Sukanen museum.
Davis recognized the passing of museum co-founder
Dick Meacher who had 45 years with the museum.
Other members with 45 years service are Charlie
Meacher, Bob Jones, Andy Sentes, and Davis.
Paul Johnson and Lorne Tilson were recognized for
35 years of service with recognition for 10 years to
Marg Yaschuk, Henry Grandal, Ian Glidden, Joyce
Walter and Ron Walter.
Somebody is watching
It all began at our

dinner, while we
were
watching
the
Scotties
Tournament
of
Hearts on the new
big screen TV
recently installed
at the Liarton
Community Hall.
Curling seems to
be a big thing on
by Dale “bushy” Bush Liars
Mountain
and
with
the
“Scotties” being hosted by my second
hometown of Moose Jaw, I was able to
point out places I had sat in the Mosaic
Center for hockey games and even people
I recognized. As I was doing some of my
best bragging, my neighbour Dusty Miller,
entered the hall from the kitchen wearing
a metal colander on his head and as the
laughter died Dusty declared he was now a
practising Pastafarian. He also declared that
by the definition of the new anti-terrorism
law being introduced, Bill C-44, and as
a Pastafarian, he might be considered a
religious terrorist. He added that at the age
of 81 he might be one of the oldest terrorists
the Feds may keep under surveillance.
Dusty might have a point. I hope that was
all he was trying to demonstrate because he
has a history of being vocal and will protest
injustice at the drop of a hat; in this case, the
drop of a colander.
He went on to say that when he is to renew
his driver’s licence in three years, he
would wear his colander in his photo…as
a protest. Dusty had heard about a man in
Vancouver who tried to wear a colander on
his head while posing for his driver’s licence
photo and was denied. That man claimed
the colander was in fact religious head
wear and because he was a “Pastafarian”
he should be allowed to wear his head
piece as long as it did not cover his face.
“Religious Freedom”, shouted Dusty at the
top of his ancient lungs. At that, there was
a giggle to those that knew Dusty, because
he is religious about not being religious.
He always says that he is not religious but
spiritual and that may be enough to get on
the list of “potential” terror groups.
Regardless of Dusty’s rantings, there
might be concerns about
some privacy issues
associated with Bill C-44
and the powers given to
the investigative CSIS
and the RCMP who will
do the dirty work and
arrest/detain the bad
guys. One concern is
who decides if the Liarton
Ladies Auxiliary, who as
a group last fall protested
a proposed pipeline, is
a terrorist organization
or not? Will the Scratch
Creek Heritage Seed
Society be accused of terrorist activities
because they organized and hosted a
protest of genetically modified foods last
spring? Because of the vagueness of the
language used in the bill, both those groups
could be considered terrorists and if they
communicated by the old interwwweb,
CSIS could be on their case faster than a
paycheque.
Many years ago after airplane hi-jacking
became common, the old joke was to call
out at the airport, “Hi Jack!” as if greeting an
old friend named Jack. We would laugh and
laugh, but if you were to whisper that these
days you could be arrested for what “may”
happen, and you could be held in custody
for 120 days before they charged you with
a crime. The RCMP can get “disruption
warrants” for disruptive plots that may occur.
This new bill allows them to get around the
legal limits by using the term terrorism as
the reason. That means that if the Liarton
Ladies Auxiliary were to have a bake sale
and donate the proceeds to an anti-pipeline
organization, they could be considered to
be funding a terrorist group or
a group that disagrees with a
government stance. The Liarton
Ladies Auxiliary did exactly that
last fall and by the sounds of
it, plan another “protest event”
demonstrating against faulty
mine tailing ponds in a few
months. Who is the real terrorist
in this case?
I am worried that as a consumer
of fine chocolate cookies and
other baked goods at the Liarton
Ladies Auxiliary bake sales, I
may be unwittingly be aiding and
abetting a terrorist organization.
The Liarton Ladies Auxiliary are an
association of likeminded people hardened
by years of vigorous fundraising who will
never haggle the price of a chocolate chip
cookie or a Nanimo bar. I know because
I often try. I can only imagine the steely
resolve if a real terrorist or even the RCMP
had to deal with the Liarton Ladies Auxiliary.
Time will tell if this is a good law. Because
it is difficult to please everyone, someone

TRADING THOUGHTS
Come, come
all ye to city’s
open house
Some time in the coming
weeks, the cast iron water
issue will break with
scads of information on
how Moose Jaw and its
property taxpayers might
solve the $117 million
crisis.
At least, we hope there
by Ron Walter
will be lots of information
to assist in making decisions on how to resolve this
situation.
There should be lots of information, since city council
and administration have long been discussing the
matter in camera with, we’re told, a secret document
that council members are sworn to not reveal.
The assumption is the document contains a thorough
analysis of the issues and the option to fix the aging
deteriorating water mains.
Council has deemed, after perusing the issue in secret
and increasing taxes by 2.25 per cent this year for cast
iron water main replacement, that the public should
be let in on the matter before any more decisions are
undertaken. In other words, this cast iron water main
thing is a hot political potato. When governments are
unable or unwilling to risk political futures by handling
hot potatoes they turn very democratic and take
‘counsel’ from the voters.
Council and city management will share the issue and
the options to resolve them with taxpayers in a series
of public open houses: South Hill Fire Hall, March 10
from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; city hall council chambers,
March 11 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Herb Taylor Room
in the public library March 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Such issues used to be presented in public meeting
where a presentation was made followed by questions
answers in the traditional democratic town hall meeting
format. The frequent hijacking of these meetings by
organized opposition led to a less democratic format
where consultation is one on one; where issues and
messages can be explained differently depending on
who is asking. This format is less democratic but avoids
bad publicity and finger pointing.
All levels of government and many corporations
have adopted this divide and conquer method of
consultation. We’re told these public open houses will
explain the issues, once more, and lay out clearly the
options for the situation.
The options include property tax increases, more water
utility bill increases, a base tax infrastructure levy like
the hospital/multiplex levies, use of city reserves, cuts
in city spending and borrowing.
Another option is a return to a local improvement
program where the property owners on the street
where mains are replaced pay a share.
Moose Jaw and other cities had successful programs
like that, but ended them in a period of relative
prosperity and frustration over certain blocks that
always petitioned out the work. Election-minded
council refused to over ride the petitioners.
Borrowing is a limited option. The city does not have
that much room, given other projects needing debt.
Use of the city reserves would put Moose Jaw further in
the poor house, by depriving the city of an annual flow
of cash interest to use for equipment and new projects.
Depleting reserves would increase the need to borrow.
For years cities across Canada have lobbied provincial
and federal governments for more funds to complete
this type of work. The province has its own financial
issues. The federal government, which takes the lead in
this funding, has opted to use much of its new Build
Canada program to pay for water infrastructure after
new federal regulations saddled municipalities with
billions in costs.
When these meetings take place be sure to come out,
discover the issues and options and have your say. This
is a rare opportunity. Use it!

Have you ever been stuck in
a rut?
Old habits die hard. It’s
so easy to mindlessly do
the same-old on a regular
basis. After a little selfexamination, there are a
few traps that I fall into, not
necessarily bad ones but on
the other hand, they may not be the very best choices. For
example: When dieting, wine is not a good option. For the
most part, trying to accomplish the goal, all is well until that
cursor called stress rears its ugly head. At that point, all
restraint leaves and temptation catches me during a weak
moment. A glass of wine is just the first of the evils that fall,
then comes snacking. Did I mention that after a glass of
wine, ambition ran out the door at the same time? I find
myself lolly-gagging in front of the idiot box for most of the
evening watching mindless entertainment, and God knows,
the junk that they call entertainment now does nothing
for a human being. So, you can see, the trap is a big one,
because at the end of each day with basically the same
pressures that most face in work and life, it all boils down to
choices....red or white, Merlot or Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc
or Chardonnay. I’m just joking :)
It’s sort of the same scenario as each New Year arrives;
people make resolutions to do…this or that, and how long
does it take before things fall into the same old pattern? For
most, probably not even ‘til the end of January and they’re
back in the same rut again.
In all of this, to spin a positive perspective, I guess I am
trying to say that it’s not just about falling back into the same
old but it’s more about how many times a person gets up
and dusts themselves off and tries again! It’s no use banging
one’s head against the wall to knock some sense in there;
we are all human and I doubt that there is anyone on this
earth who doesn’t deal with temptations or stresses. That
is why I encourage myself first and others, too, to make
positive steps toward a goal, whether it be weight loss or
otherwise. Keep your head up and your heart and mind set
on the prize! Rome wasn’t built in a day and sometimes it
may take a lifetime to get where we are going, but it is worth
the try.

Salads for cold seasons
By Joyce Walter For Moose Jaw Express
Sometimes the best part of the buffet line is the
variety of salads offered to complement the main
courses.
There is no limit to what might go into a salad and
one’s imagination can be put to good use in the home
kitchen to create salads that will have everyone
asking for second helpings — or the recipe if guests
are present.
This week’s recipes are vegetable based and are
tasty regardless of the weather outside.
Cauliflower Salad
1 head cauliflower
6 boiled eggs
1/3 cup mayonnaise
3 tbsps. mustard
3 tbsps. pickle relish
1/8 cup chopped
onion
salt and pepper to
taste
Cut cauliflower into bite-sized pieces. Steam until
just tender. Cool.
Place cauliflower in a large bowl. Remove shells from
eggs. Separate yolks and whites and chop separately.
Add to cauliflower. Mix mayonnaise, mustard, relish
and onion and stir into cauliflower and egg mixture.
Season to taste with salt and pepper. Chill for about
two hours before serving.
Cucumber salad
3 medium cucumbers (about 1 1/2 lbs.)
1/2 cup thick Greek-style yogurt
2 tbsps. minced dill
1/8 tsp. black pepper
1 onion, sliced
2 tomatoes, diced
Peel cucumbers and slice. Place in large bowl with
sliced onions and diced tomatoes. Mix yogurt, dill
and pepper and spoon into vegetables. Mix to coat
vegetables. Chill before serving.
Broccoli, Bacon and Cheddar Salad
Dressing:
1 cup mayonnaise
2 tbsps. cider vinegar
3 tbsps. honey
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
Salad:
9 cups broccoli florets,
in bite-sized pieces
1 cup lightly packed
grated sharp cheddar
cheese
1/3 cup chopped red
onion, optional
6 slices bacon
1/2 cup sliced and
toasted almonds or
1/2 cup honey roasted
cashew pieces
For dressing, combine mayonnaise, cider vinegar,
honey and salt and pepper. Whisk until smooth then
set aside.
For salad, combine broccoli, cheese and onion. Add
the dressing and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate.
Before serving, cook bacon, drain on paper towels
and then crumble into small pieces over the salad.
Add almonds or cashews and toss. Serve salad cold.
Note: Broccoli florets may be steamed until just soft
and then chilled for use in the salad.

it’s up to you
by Dr. Steven Heidinger,
Moose Jaw Chiropractor
GLENN
Dr. Kenneth Kettering
Glenn of Moose Jaw passed
away peacefully with family
by his side on February 12,
2015 at the age of 87. Kenneth will be sadly missed by
his wife of 63 years, Maxine;
son Robby; daughters
Norma Broughton,
Kathy, Lori (Ken) Belyea, and Val (fiancé Ron
Carpentier); seven grandchildren: Joshua, Jaeda
(Chris), Jenesse; Rod and Jeremy; Glenn and
Carol-Lynn; five great-grandchildren; as well
as several nieces and nephews. Kenneth is predeceased by his parents; daughter Carol; greatgranddaughter Janessa and brother Gale. Ken
was a Chiropractor in Moose Jaw for over 40
years. He was a member of Zion United Church
and served in many capacities, Ken served on
the executive of many community organizations. The Memorial Service will be held at
Zion United Church on Wednesday February
25, 2015 at 1:30 pm. Reverend Doug Hallman
will officiate. In lieu of flowers, for those so
wishing, memorial donations may be made to the
Sask. Heart & Stroke Foundation, 279 3rd Ave.
N., Saskatoon, S7K 2H8, or to the J.D.R.F., P.O.
Box 3924, Regina, S4P 3S9. In living memory
of Ken, a memorial planting will be made by
W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign

The following is a common occurrence in my chiropractic
practice: A patient, who is new to our office, presents
with chronic back pain. As with every new patient, a
thorough history is taken, with one of the questions
being,
“Have you seen a chiropractor in the past for this
particular problem?”
If the answer to that question is “yes”, then I follow up
by asking,
“Did it help you at all?”
If the patient replies with a “no”, then I ask how long
they attended chiropractic care. Too often the answer
is, “Well, I tried 2 or 3 times, but it didn’t work…so I
gave up.”
“So let me get this straight… you’ve had back pain
pretty much every day for years, you saw a chiropractor
3 times, and gave up because it was not working.”
The “It wasn’t working for me, so I gave up” syndrome
is rampant in the wellness industry. Many of those
who are overweight have “tried” to go to the gym, but
it didn’t work after 2 weeks, so they just quit. There are
those who tried “carb-free” or “gluten-free” diets, only
to give up because they saw no changes to their health
after just a short time.
Remember the phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day”?
Well the same is true for your health. A chronic back
pain sufferer probably spent years abusing their back.
Any sort of physical treatment, (chiropractic, massage
or physiotherapy) would be expected to take several
months at least, if long-term benefit is to be seen.
The men and women I see at the gym who are in great
shape did not get like that in just a few weeks. It took
years of hard work and commitment. Those who lose
weight sensibly and healthily, shed pounds slowly and
steadily for months or even years.
Does every patient who enters my clinic get benefit from
chiropractic care? I can say that a great majority does,
and the ones that do not are usually the ones that have
not followed the recommended plan of care: missed
appointments, not doing the recommended exercises
and not resting when they should, etc. This is why
treatment “didn’t work, so you gave up.”
Commitment is really key in getting back your health.
Eating one piece of toast instead of two for breakfast
each morning, or eating just half of a plate of pasta for
supper, is not commitment when it comes to diet and
weight loss. Joining a gym but only going twice a month
is not a commitment to exercise. “Trying” a chiropractor
or an acupuncturist once or twice for chronic pain, is not
commitment.
I have met many people with chronic disease who have
been able to dramatically help themselves without
medication. I have seen colitis and Crohn’s sufferers
become symptom-free after significant changes to
their lifestyle. They may have spent hundreds, if not
thousands of dollars on Naturopathic treatment and
supplements, but the commitment paid off.
If your health needs attention, don’t just “try”….Commit!

Recognized for their work
PAGE A26 • MOOSEJAWEXPRESS.COM • Week of March 2, 2015
Years ago, Ken Dalgarno sat in
Robert Currie’s English class.
Today, the two men are nominated
for Saskatchewan Book Awards.
Dalgarno is nominated for the
First Book Award for Badlands: A
Geography of Metaphors. Currie
is nominated for the Young Adult
Literature Award for his novel,
Living with the Hawk.
Both men are glad to be recognized
for their work.
“It feels very rewarding. There
are quite a few books published
in Saskatchewan by Saskatchewan
authors,” said Dalgarno.
“I was very pleased,” said Currie.
“I know the other three people
in the category and they are all
people that I admire, so it is good Badlands: A Geography of Metaphors by Ken Dalgarno.
to be shortlisted with them.”
Dalgarno is a renowned artist.
His artwork has been featured in
publications such as the Edmonton Journal, Prairies
North, and The Western Art Collector. Badlands:
A Geography of Metaphors contains hundreds of
beautiful photos of the badlands of the Northern
Great Plains.
Dalgarno’s book was released
internationally back in November. It continues to
generate a great deal of interest.
”I have seen it pop up in lots of places. It was
reviewed in South Carolina. It is all over the
U.S. and in the UK. I’m thrilled about that. The
Toronto Public Library and I think the New York
Public Library has a copy. That is very neat,” said
Dalgarno. “I didn’t receive any grants on this, so it
was all done on my own, including the travel. Even
for it to be published is very rewarding, but for it
to do well and get released internationally is very
neat.”
Rather than set out to write another book, Dalgarno
says he hopes that he continues to evolve as an
artist.
”I would love to do a film. Film is sort of the
medium of today with things like YouTube,” said
Dalgarno. “I have painted and I have done well
with my paintings and my photography has done
well, so I would like to give film a shot.
“I have a few projects in mind but nothing concrete Living with the Hawk by Robert Currie.
just yet. I need to learn much more about the
by Scott Hellings
medium and editing but I have
been dabbling.”
Currie is an award-winning
writer who published his first
book of poetry back in 1965. In
2007 he became Saskatchewan’s
third poet laureate. Living with
the Hawk is just Currie’s second
novel. He plans on releasing
another book of poems in the
spring.
Currie says the idea actually
came from a poem written by
one of his former students.
“A former student of mine wrote
a poem about an incident that
he had heard about when he was
in Grade 12. It was something
that really shook him up and it
really shook me up. That was
really the starting point of the book,”
said Currie. “He actually came to a
reading that I did, so I was able to
acknowledge his contributions, which I also do in
the acknowledgements in the book.”
Currie says he was glad to hear that Dalgarno was
nominated. Although a good deal of time has
passed since they were teacher and student, the
two continue to see each other quite often because
Dalgarno works on the reference desk at the public
library.
“He is somebody that I see a lot because I go to the
library to write,” said Currie. “He was quite excited
by the nomination and I was really pleased for him.”
In fact, Dalgarno says that Currie helped him
discover his love of literature.
“I see Bob almost every day at work and we have
become friends,” said Dalgarno. “I remember his
Grade 11 English class and his passion for literature.
That is probably what flipped the switch for me
because I was an athlete and really into sports…It
is very rewarding to be nominated along with Bob.”
Both books are available at Post Horizon Book
Sellers (57 High Street West).

dalgarnoart.com for more on Ken Dalgarno and his
work. Go to www.thistledownpress.com for more

The Saskatchewan Book Awards will be handed out
on April 25 in Regina.
CITY COUNCIL
Moose Jaw moves toward city-wide curbside recycling
The City of Moose Jaw is
preparing to join the vast
majority of Canadian cities
and towns that provide for
city-wide blue-box recycling.
This policy direction has
long been advocated by
the city’s environmental
advisory committee and is
supported by a wide majority
Councillor Don Mitchell of residents, as indicated in a
recent citizen survey.
Last week, city council approved the proposal
from Loraas Disposal to implement a single stream
recycling service starting in September.
The
same company currently provide this service on a
subscription basis to about 20% of city households.
The larger contract will result in an expanded
operation for Loraas in Moose Jaw with additional
staff and equipment.
“Single stream” collection means simply that
major recyclable items including fibre (paper and
cardboard), metal and plastic can be deposited
in a single container. The three categories will be
separated later at a sorting centre for shipment to
market destinations. Pick-up will be bi-weekly and
the containers will be collected from the same spot
as the existing city green bins for regular garbage.
Projected cost of the service is about $5.60 per
month and will be added as a “solid waste utility
charge” on the city’s quarterly water bill.
Although there is a charge to citizens for the
additional service, there will also be future cost
savings to the city to help ease further pressure on
tax increases. Diversion of an estimated 25,000 tons
of recyclable material from the land-fill annually
will reduce land-fill maintenance costs and delay
the timing and added cost of land-fill replacement.
Potential cost savings are obviously difficult to
estimate with any precision but less waste means
less activity at the land-fill. If, as in other cities, the
blue box diversion enables regular garbage pickup to move to a bi-weekly schedule that would be
additional savings.
Recycled paper and cardboard have value, and there
is a growing market for them. Paper production
from recycled fibre is common now throughout the
world. It represents a growing percentage of overall
paper production.
Recycled paper reduces the demand on tree
harvesting, energy requirements for paper
production, water required in the processing, and
the run-off of chemical effluent into streams and
lakes. Making paper from recycled fibre is a simpler
and cleaner operation.
Reducing the volume of material entering the
land-fill is important for another reason. Materials
buried at the land-fill, especially fibre and other
organic waste, add to greenhouse gas emissions,
particularly methane, into the atmosphere. In North
America urban land-fills are the third largest source
of methane gas emissions from human activity.
Methane is, pound for pound, 20 times more
efficient than carbon dioxide at trapping radiation
and raising atmospheric temperature. In short
methane is a major ingredient in the cumulative
process of global climate change.
Collectively, in solidarity with other communities
around the world, we can reduce the volume of landfill emissions. This is essential piece of the effort to
slow and hopefully reverse the carbon build up in
the atmosphere.
I fully understand that not everyone will welcome
the extra inconvenience of separating their waste
in support of land-fill diversion. It’s easier to just
throw it all away and ignore the consequences. But
would we tell the next generation we just couldn’t be
bothered when there is so much at stake?
City administration was
telling city council how well
the new parking prohibition
on streets scheduled for
snow removal is working.
Fewer vehicles are being
towed every time.
Then Councillor Patrick
Boyle asked if there was a
recent error.
Yes, confessed city manager
Matt Noble. A city employee

issued a press release telling
the public not to park on one
side of a street to allow snow
clearance.
But the snow job was
scheduled for that side. Six
cars were towed and the city
paid the towing bill.
Councillor Dawn Luhning

Noble said part of the
concern may be two new
