MOOSEJAWEXPRESS.COM • Wednesday April 1 • PAGE A5 No ‘dumbing down’ for Warriors players Rosemary Hartney Not everyone associates junior hockey players with school smarts. Moose Jaw Warriors education adviser Rosemary Hartney says some people think education in the WHL is an oxymoron. he former ice principal of anier ollegiate spent decades working with Warriors players to ensure an education, as well as building hockey skills. About 20 years ago, the Western Hockey League named an education director and became more serious about educating hockey players, she told the Moose Jaw Canadian Club. Before that “it was expected that school age players were in school. The coaches introduced the students to the school, or at least pointed them in the general direction. “Some of the coaches were more interested in school than others. It was not a mandated part of their o . It certainl was not monitored the team or the leag e as it is now. It depended more on the indi id als to take care of school and I think some of them slipped through the cracks. “Now school falls into the portfolio of the assistant coach.” The WHL education program has developed standards and policies re iring each team to ha e an education adviser to connect between schools, team, league and parents. The primary goal for players on ice is to win the WHL championship and the Memorial Cup but “it is e all important for that pla er to set his sights on academic success.” It all starts with the first prospect camp attended. The player must bring his home school timetable with his choice of courses and a transcript. The elementary school Read To Succeed program is high on the list of player community events. After the WHL, a player is eligible for books and tuition for one year for each year played in the league, if they take advantage of the program within one year after WHL play. High school graduates may play one year in a designated developmental league without forfeiting the scholarship. The offer is void on signing with the NHL or elite European leagues. Pantelopoulos YOUR REAL ESTATE… MY EXPERTISE! Vicki TRUST! I’m with you from Start to Closing BUYING or SELLING Ideas flow for $117m cast iron water mains TRADING THOUGHTS The city’s seven options for resolving the $117 million cast iron water main replacement to some 6,000 homes over the next 20 years are too many choices. A number of taxpayers have thrown their hands up in the air after reading part of the by Ron brochure outlining the options a predicta le trend when faced with more than three or four options. Seven options makes even less sense since two of them are nonsense. The debt option is impossible. The city has a debt limit of $95 million to pay for $117 million work. City debt sits at $34 million with another $30 million planned for non water main projects. That leaves about $12 and gives room for emergency debt. The option to cut city expenses makes no sense. As one taxpayer told me, we could fund the cast iron program by cutting out parks and recreation. Would you want to live in a city without parks, without minor hockey rinks, without ball diamonds, without soccer pitches, without a swimming pool, without Mosaic lace and ara entre Much of the savings would be lost in increased policing costs. The $213 a year plan to raise water rates wo ld onl pa one third of the costs, and the $132 a year replacement of city reserves would delay funding of future public works and infrastructure. A $129 property tax on the average home seems a decent solution at the least cost, but does have people in areas without cast iron mains complaining they are paying for other people’s mains. Ron Walter can be reached at ronjoy@ sasktel.net From Our Family To Yours MARKETING TOOLS, NETWORK & KNOWLEDGE www.visual4sale.com/vickipantel They have a point, but safe water for the whole city is essential to attract people to live here. The $162 a year levy on every property, apartment and business has drawbacks, too. Low income earners in low value properties pay a larger proportion than Walter in higher value homes, a most unfair proposition. The 30 per cent local improvement le a ear for a tting owners and $51 a year for others seems nfair and high for people living in these areas. The Moose Jaw Drug Treatment Court (MDTC) will close later this year. Several weeks ago, it was announced that the MJDTC would have to close its doors on July 2 due to a lack of funding. They then have their sentencing set aside ntil the are done the dr g treatment program It is to assist these individuals and make a difference in their lives, while at the same time taking care of their addiction that is causing them to commit these crimes.” The MJDTC is not available to persons charged with certain types of offences, including incidents of serious violence, sexual assault, family violence, or offences involving or relating to children/youth. Participants still face their charges at the conclusion of the program, although it may affect sentencing. For example, Topp says that someone facing an month incarceration for trafficking ma recei e a ear long conditional sentence instead. For a moment it did appear as though the MJDTC might be able to continue on; right after the closure announcement was made the government described the closure as a ”premature” decision. by Scott Hellings nfort natel , a meeting with go ernment officials did not yield positive results and the Sask Party did not incl de an specific f nding for the MJ in the provincial budget. Topp says that, unless they have further conversations with the Ministry of Justice, they will go forward with the planned closure date. He adds that the program has never received any funding from the provincial or federal government. Instead, the MJ has s r i ed thanks to the omm nit Initiati es nd and ser ice pro iders like the Moose Jaw Rotary Club. Staff involved with the MJ , s ch as pro ation officers, addictions councillors, and the police volunteered their time. Since it began in 2009, the program has helped 43 participants. Topp believes another two or three individuals will graduate from the program before July 2, but there is more to the program than graduation. “Graduation isn’t the only success we see in the program. In a perfect world, e er one wo ld make it right through the program, graduate, and never use again or commit a crime. But there are varying successes that we have seen where individuals have re attached with their famil and with emplo ment, or have got their kids back or increased visitations with their kids,” said Topp. “Some people get to that point where, they haven’t really solved their addiction, but the crime that has been feeding that addiction has disappeared.” The Five Hills Health Region has agreed to provide funds so the program can continue on until July. 3 & 1 46 $-&"3"/$& &7&/5 30$,1035 &$$0 4,&$)&34 30.*," 6(( .&33&-$-"3,4 +04&'4&*#&BOENBOZNPSF 4BWFVQUP 0'' 4"-&&/%4 "13*-UI PAGE A10 • MOOSEJAWEXPRESS.COM • Wednesday April 1, 2015 Passive House Performance Standard e all want to find wa s to c t o r energ ills and Passive House design might be the answer. Saskatchewan Polytechnic recently held a special Passive House seminar in Moose Jaw for students and instructors from the Architectural Technologies, Carpentry and Engineering Design, and Drafting and echnolog programs. Ind str partners and community members also took in the event. Passive House is a performance standard that can be applied to an ilding. It is an inno ati e wa of designing energ efficient ildings. he ildings are well insulated and airtight. According to the assi e o se Instit te, the design makes efficient use of the sun, internal heat sources and heat recovery, rendering conventional heating systems unnecessary through even the coldest winters.” During the summer months, Passive House uses passi e cooling techni es like strategic shading to keep the building cool. Michael Nemeth led the seminar. He is a mechanical engineer from Saskatoon representing the Canadian assi e o se Instit te est. emeth elie es Passive House is a great option. “We want to bring this information to people and show different ways of building more energy efficient ildings. pecificall , this is a o t etter ins lation, etter air tightness with a proper entilation s stem and good orientation of windows to the south, so that you can take advantage of solar gain,” said Nemeth. “With this, we can save 90 per cent of space heating energy, which is the biggest component of energy use in a building. We can save a lot of energy, we can reduce our carbon footprint, and we can make it affordable. “We really need to work towards a low carbon future and Passive House is a path towards that.” Michael Nemeth led the seminar on Passive House design. Nemeth says there are 40,000 examples of Passive House building in the world, many of which are in Europe. He adds that more and more Passive House buildings are eing ilt in anada. In fact, emeth sa s that Passive House was actually made possible because of projects such as Saskatchewan Conservation o se, which was ilt in in Regina. It is often said that assi e o se got its roots from projects like that.” Angela Deans is an instructor in the Architectural by Scott Hellings echnologies program and the organi er of the seminar. he sees the enefit of assi e o se design. It is a reall sensi le approach to energ efficienc because it reduces the demand for energy, rather than tr ing to find alternate wa s to pro ide energ . In the winter time we are smart eno gh to p t on really heavy, warm coats. We don’t just go outside in a t shirt and r n wires thro gh it to tr and sta warm with atter packs or something. I think that is sometimes how we approach buildings,” said Deans. e ild o r ildings like a t shirt and then we tr and r n a whole nch of wires and e ipment through them to keep them warm. Why not build ildings that are like that warm coat a id Reed is a fifth semester st dent in the Architectural Technologies program. Reed says the seminar builds on the information presented in class. He believes the seminar provided some valuable information. It is a good to get a look at where the ind str is heading, in terms of how energ efficient ildings are going to stri e to e, said Reed. I think this will ecome more pre alent, as people reali e how much energy we are wasting and how much we could be saving.” Deans also believes the seminar will prove to be eneficial. “The more students think about this, the more they will bring it to the everyday work that they do. So, even if they are not Passive House certifying a building, they might still try to apply some of the concepts,” said Deans. “That is how we see our industry improve over time.” Visit www.passivehouse.ca for more information on Passive House design. Megan might not be known for her guitar wi ardr t her instrumentation on Song Harvest is super impressive. Between her and the producer, Brodie Mohninger, they’ve managed to create the perfect tone. It s chilling and patient and perfectly captures the feel of recording in a church that probably doubled as a funeral parlour in its heyday. However, for all you optimists out there, Song Harvest does have a few cheerier moments. “Matchbox Baby” is catchy little pop ditty and “Wait,” the album’s closing track, actually sees Megan playing an electric guitar and singing with some rock and roll pomposity. Megan Nash is probably going to “take off” one of these days, so, if o e ne er seen her efore, I d highly recommend keeping your eyes peeled for pcoming e ents. Song Harvest Volume One can be found on iTunes, BandCamp or at megannash.ca . A Thoughtful Gift January 25 was less than a week away and for some reason, it rang a bell. Then I remembered, it was Robbie Burns Day but the bell continued to ring. In between the chimes of the ringing bell, I heard a little by Dale “bushy” Bush voice. That tiny little voice said, “It’s your wife’s birthday you dipstick… don’t mess up!” I was relieved and a little concerned. Relieved that for once I had remembered Mrs. B’s birthday with some time to thoughtfully find a nice gift but concerned that there was a little voice in my head. With some time to actually think about a thoughtful yet practical gift for the woman who has everything (my words not hers), I debated with the voice in my head about jewelry, clothing, spa trips, even gift cards but… I logically decided on household tools. I do help with the housework and can see where tools can improve her house cleaning efficiency. I have tried to convince Mrs. B about the ease of dusting the house with the overhead fan going full tilt and my leaf blower herding dust bunnies out the open patio doors but I guess she is a traditionalist. After careful research, I decided to buy my beautiful bride a Robot to help with house cleaning. I have seen these machines that vacuumed and swept floors all by themselves on the interwwweb and after watching a cat in a shark costume riding one, I was sold, maybe not by the efficiency of the floor robot but by the pure entertainment value. We don’t have a cat so I bought a floor sweeping robot that was not as powerful as the one on Spacebook and I could hardly wait to share this wonderful labour saving household tool with Mrs. B on her birthday. The big day arrived. I could hardly wait for Mrs. B to get home from work so she could do some household chores before she cooked supper on her birthday. Just kidding, do you think I would ask Mrs. B to cook on her birthday? No way, this was a special day, so I let her decide what kind of frozen pizza to put in the oven. After supper when she was sweeping the floor, I really surprised her with the thoughtfully gift wrapped floor cleaning robot. I am pretty sure her tears were ones of joy and she was so overjoyed she stomped her feet and yelled at the top of her lungs, “A ROBOT!!! I GOT A FLOOR CLEANING ROBOT FOR MY BIRTHDAY!!! A ROBOT!!!”, over and over. As I was retrieving the robot from the front yard, which she must have somehow flung when she was so excited she lost her grip on the robot gift, it occurred to me that perhaps…just maybe, Mrs. B was not as overjoyed as she was acting. She was walking/stomping around the living room still so excited about her birthday gift and still shouting to the neighbours, “A ROBOT!!! I GOT A ROBOT FOR MY BIRTHDAY!!!” Then somehow the robot, which I had placed on the floor and activated to demonstrate its wonderful capabilities fell/jumped/was kicked down the stairs to the basement to its sad demise and unfortunate end. Although I was able to put it back together, it would only go in one direction until it would hit a wall. As if in frustration, the little red robot would ram itself repeatedly against the wall. Poor little guy! He was just trying to help! I told Mrs. B the bad news that her new floor robot was malfunctioning and that I would return it to the store and swap it for a new one. In her infinite wisdom she pointed out that perhaps the location of our stairs to the basement might not be ideal for a floor robot and that one after another they would all jump or fall off. It was like she had a vision and I could almost see her logic. Then when I returned the floor cleaning robot to the store and explained what had happened to the clerk, I felt she agreed with me about what a thoughtful gift I bought for my wife. In fact she was so excited that she began to speak quite loudly and said, “YOU BOUGHT YOUR WIFE A FLOOR CLEANING ROBOT FOR HER BIRTHDAY?” The clerk then thoughtfully suggested that instead of exchanging or getting a refund that a gift certificate might soften the loss of our floor cleaning robot. Mrs. B was all smiles when I gave her a gift certificate and she seemed to understand my decision to not exchange the floor cleaning robot for another. She just smiled, though, when I told her about a window washing robot I saw on the interwwweb. Hold onto your seats…Cardio can actually make you fat. Huh?!? Sorry to burst your bubble but more and more research is telling us that by spending too much time on a treadmill, or elliptical, or any other cardio machine, we are training our bodies to store fat…not burn fat. I love reading science and research that contradicts traditional ways of thinking, especially when it comes to health and wellness. Until very recently, it was believed that eating fat makes you fat, however now we are finding that most fats are actually good for us and it is the sugar and most carbs that make us put on weight. Now back to this “cardio makes us fat” thing. How the heck is this true? Well, it really comes down to hormones, metabolism and muscle. The best way to burn fat is to gain and maintain muscle. Our muscles need to be fed, even at rest, so the more muscle you have, the higher resting metabolism you have. Having high levels of the right hormones will dictate how your body manages your muscles. The way you exercise directly affects these hormones. Let’s first discuss your thyroid gland. Most lay people understand that there is a relationship to your thyroid hormones and your metabolism. We often here of people with low thyroid hormones becoming lethargic and gaining weight. Your T3 hormone in particular is what tells your body to burn fat. So obviously we want to maintain higher levels of T3. Well, guess what? Long duration cardio (like 30 to 60 minutes on any cardio machine) suppresses T3. Therefore you are training your body to store fat, not burn it. It has also been found that this type of exercise lowers the hormones necessary to build and maintain muscle. Less muscle equates to lower resting metabolism. Long duration cardio can also increase the stress hormone cortisol, which can cause a variety of health SATURDAY AFTERNOON April 4 issues, including packing on belly fat. 12:00 12:30 1:00 1:30 2:00 2:30 3:00 3:30 4:00 4:30 5:00 5:30 Cooking Kitchen Sara’s Rick Steves Music Lawrence Welk Weekend Foot/ Grave As Time... In Committee Tête à tête 109 CPAC World Showcase Å From The Kitchen Lamb and yams with bunnies on the side By Joyce Walter For Moose Jaw Express Lavish Easter bonnets and long Easter parades seem to have lost a certain appeal over the years but some traditions stick like glue: Easter egg treats, chocolate rabbits and home-cooked meals. While many families will embrace the ham as the meat of choice for Easter dinner, others will turn to turkey and lamb for the occasion. This week’s recipes offer ideas for yams and lamb and a simple but delicious dessert. Baked Yams, Lime and Honey 3 yams (about 4 lbs.) 1/2 cup water 6 tbsps. honey 4 tbsps. butter at room temperature juice of 4 limes 1 1/2 tsps. salt 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Wash yams and place in a baking dish with the water. Bake until yams are soft when tested with a fork and skins are puffy, about 90 minutes. Set aside to cool. When yams are cool enough to handle, peel and place in a medium baking dish. Add honey, butter, lime juice, salt and pepper. Stir and mash well with a potato masher. Cover with foil and return to the oven for 1520 minutes or until heated through. Makes 8 servings. Roast Leg of Lamb 1-6 lb. leg of lamb, trimmed 1/2 cup orange juice 1 cup white wine 1/4 cup olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tbsps. chopped fresh thyme 2 tbsps. chopped rosemary ground black pepper salt to taste Place orange juice, wine, olive oil, garlic and spices into the blender and mix well. Pour into a large resealable plastic bag and add the lamb. Coat lamb with the marinade, squeeze out excess air and seal. Marinate overnight in the refrigerator. Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before roasting. Pat lamb dry. Salt and pepper both sides. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Place lamb on a rack in a large roasting pan. Roast for 30 minutes then reduce heat to 300 degrees F and continue roasting for 10-12 minutes per pound until meat thermometer reaches 130-135 degrees F. Remove from oven, remove roast from pan, tent with foil and let stand 10-15 minutes before slicing. Serve while hot. Note: Marinade made be boiled, then used as a sauce in which to roast a variety of root vegetables to be served with the lamb. Dream Whip Dessert 1 angel food cake, broken into chunks 1 envelope Dream Whip topping 1-4 oz. pkg. lemon or vanilla instant pudding 1 1/2 cups cold milk In a non-plastic bowl, mix dry Dream Whip and pudding. Add cold milk and beat until stiff, about 3-5 minutes. Place bowl in refrigerator to cool. Meanwhile, cut cake into chunks and place in individual dishes. Just before serving, place dollops of the pudding mixture on the cake. If desired, add chopped, fresh strawberries as a garnish. Send your stories, events and pictures to; editor@mjvexpress.com Ron Walter Joan Ritchie Joyce Walter Scott Hellings Wanda Smith Janet Kilgannon Dale “bushy” Bush Nick Greengrass The Easter season is upon us; my favourite time of the year! I love that every dead looking shrub, tree and bush buds forth in new life; I love that the sun is warmer and the birds are out singing welcoming songs of spring; I love the hope that the season brings… it’s like starting all over; there’s optimism in what the future may bring! Isn’t it remarkable how even nature knows when to spring forth? It really is a miracle! If you lived at my house, you would notice that I have spring fever, too; with renewed energy I have taken on different house cleaning/painting projects to freshen up the place, leaving traces of winter far behind. Even my kitty cat, Kesu, has spring fever. Animals seem to have an inbred sense of what time of the year it is. Kesu instinctly knows that soon she will be able to graze on green-grass shoots in the back yard. As dawn breaks, she breaks forth in meowing renditions of “Set me Free” as she jets directly to the back door to be let out, hoping to God that I answer her call. Not at that time of the morning; need I say more? Don’t you just love opening the windows to get a breath of fresh air? How do the geese and the crows and all things feathered know when to come back home? How do most creatures know that spring is the season for love as they get all frisky finding a mate? Just as the ending of a year is a time of reflection of what was, I think spring is a time to renew our hope, as we look to the future. We set our sights on what is to come. It is the season to seed and then with hope and faith and a little rain, we believe that the seeds will sprout and bring forth the bountiful harvest at just the right time. But most of all, I love the message that Easter brings, that when things look their very worst and there seems to be no hope, one needs to just look up to the Son and let the Sonshine in! By Ron Walter For Moose Jaw Express What does a government do the year before an election when faced with a massive shortfall in re en es That was the issue facing the Saskatchewan Party after oil prices were cut in half leaving the budget with a million hole a o t fi e per cent sh of the goal. er thing, according to inance Minister en rawet , was on the ta le million in increased education property tax, $105 million in extra gas tax, $265 million in provincial sales tax, alcohol and tobacco taxes. and $65 million cuts to municipal revenue sharing. In the end, the alanced dget was achie ed with continued investment in infrastructure, some o creation incenti es and none of the a o e mentioned tax changes. The balanced budget was met by a $250 million increase in potash revenues as prices and exports grow $150 million more from potash companies, an increase of $237 million dividends from Crown corporations and a few cuts here and there. he finance minister and the part ragged of no new taxes and no tax increases while mastering this feat. It seems that s ee ing million from the three potash companies in Saskatchewan somehow does not alif as a ta increase. ccording to the government, this was just an adjustment over a longer time period in deductions allowed the potash miners for investment. The $150 million adjustment was made after “consultation with the industry.” he non ta increase ad stment came ne pectedl to observers. What was even more surprising was the potash miners reaction a mild disappointed was all they had to say. One would think skimming off $150 million in potash profits wo ld merit more than a mere disappointed. he low ke reaction raises the estion h is the potash ind str so meek a o t the loss oes the mining companies’ silence imply they have such a good arrangement that losing $150 million is oka The potash taxation review promised by the government should tell taxpayers how the current complicated ro alt r les enefit miners and taxpayers. The increased potash tax is popular, saving taxpayers from dipping into their wallets. And the promised review should put a damper on Opposition demands for a fairer return from resource royalties. This acceptable potash policy and review show why Premier Brad Wall keeps being voted the most popular premier in the country. Not only did he raise necessary cash, he had the investment bankers on Wall Street whining about a ret rn to the confiscator politics of fair ret rn. Some observers will complain that borrowing $700 million to build schools, hospitals and highways places a burden on taxpayers. Would they rather continue to see roads crumble, st dents free e and seniors in s standard homes ntil oil prices reco er This budget was good politics and it was a matter of doing the right thing. Sometimes the details I learn are overwhelming; other times they are simply beyond one’s imagination, vulgarities aside. On the other hand, and on a more positive note, there are numerous inspirational messages shared on Facebook; it often serves as one way of keeping in touch with farflung friends and family; and it has entertaining moments when one’s personality can be explained and dissected The other day, in a moment of curiosity, this occasional Facebook user decided to catch up on who was doing what and with whom on my limited list of friends. On one page I was introduced to something called “spirit animals,” the unscientific matching of one’s name with an appropriate animal or bird. The friend I was visiting at the time listed her spirit animal as a dog. Out of interest and a certain amount of boredom, I carefully clicked on the link that would tell me just what spirit creature would look out for me. I typed in my first name, waited a bit and then learned that my spirit animal (bird) turned out to be an eagle. I didn’t tell Housemate as he would have scoffed, suggesting the only similarity was the size of the eagle’s beak compared with the size and shape of my nose. According to the authors of this link, the eagle makes me brave, persistent and patient, valuing my time alone and knowing that we all walk on our own even if we do help each other when we can. Further, I learned, I am very balanced and able to see the big picture from high above. Hmmmmm. Joyce Walter can be reached at ronjoy@sasktel.net On a whim I inserted my middle name after my first name, just to see what would materialize — the combination made my spirit animal a horse, saying I have two feet solidly on the ground — only a bit of contradiction with my soaring eagle persona. The information said that as a horse’s spirit, I have a wild spirit with a preference for roaming rather than being tied down. I love travelling, alone or with companionship, and have an independent streak. Hmmmmmm again. Then it was time for me to find out about Housemate’s animals. Would we be compatible? Let’s see. For the shortened version of his first name, up came the Fox, making him sly and observant, with the ability to notice subtleties. The fox is quicker to listen than to speak and is adept at looking beyond current situations and planning ahead. The kicker: nothing gets past a fox. Snicker. The full version of his first name came up with butterfly, meaning he lives life freely with his creativity flowing through to others. Butterflies are sensitive to harmony or the lack of harmony in group settings. Hmmmmmm. Finally, I added his middle name and knew right away this spirit animal thing was bogus. With all his names in a row, he became an eagle, meaning we have much in common even though he will say his nose does not in any way resemble the beak of the eagle. I think I will take the horse as my true spirit animal. The Housemate eagle may then come along for the ride, navigating from the passenger’s vantage point, or perhaps flying off occasionally to give me the solitude that my spirits desire. Maybe next time Facebook will come up with other bits of information that one absolutely didn’t know one had to know. No breakfast photos, please. They sold their cattle ranch at Old Wives Lake, moved to Moose Jaw, and started a real estate investment business. The move has certainly paid off, as Panko was recentl named a finalist for three awards at the anadian Real state ealth Maga ine s op In estor wards. he awards ceremon was held on March in Toronto. Panko was nominated for Newcomer of the ear, op In estor of the ear and M lti amil In estor of the ear. e took home the award for ewcomer of the ear. hat is an incredi le feat, as there were almost 600 nominees in the nine major award categories. Panko says he was surprised and humbled by the recognition. I didn t reall nderstand the process at first when I was nominated. hen I was selected as a finalist, I reali ed st how man nominations there had een then I was reall shocked, said anko. “To actually win one was totally unexpected.” he trip to oronto also pro ed to e ite eneficial, as anko sa s he was a le to meet a lot of new people and attend a number of forums and workshops. Gayland, Angie and their company (Old Wives Holdings Ltd.) have certainly come a long way over the course of the last year. At this time in 2014 they had sold their ranch, set up the company, bought a house in Moose Jaw, prepared for the farm e ipment a ction, closed on a m lti unit apartment building in Saskatoon, as well as completing constr ction on a three edroom penthouse condo in Tulum, Mexico. Gayland then began working for the new owner of the ranch calving cows but that stopped in May after the birth of their fourth child. The next few months were spent inspecting properties in Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Prince Albert, Weyburn, and even Atlanta, Georgia. In eptem er, ngie took o er the paperwork because Gayland was helping a friend run a combine for harvest. Angie was scanning and emailing documents at home with the four kids, while Gayland was in the combine on the phone negotiating details and arranging financing for three more m lti famil ildings and a commercial retail strip mall. By Scott Hellings Gayland says that new investors need to be informed and know what they are getting into. “Read as much as you can. When you go to real estate for ms, the room is filled with sharks, t it is also filled with a lot of people who are interested but they don’t know where to start,” said Panko. “The public library has all the information you need to get started.” It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication, t you won’t hear Gayland complain; he says that he loves his job and enjoys meeting new challenges. In fact, it is something that he has wanted to do for a long time. I had een thinking a o t it for ears and I had een researching different in estments, t I wasn’t able to pull the trigger on anything until we sold the ranch, said anko. I was st looking for the ne t thing I co ld do and real estate seemed like the obvious answer.” Gayland and Angie have just recently decided to expand their business to include partnerships with other investors in real estate, and they offer a ariet of options ased on the indi id al. o can find o t more information contact a land at or ga land oldwi esholdings.com. o can also isit www.oldwi esholdings.com for more information.
