Old Skool Revew: MuchMusic
X-Tendamix Dance Mix 1992 (Part One)
COREY AKTINSON
UNCUT
A skeptic would say that
the overwhelming success
of the Muchmusic dance
series of the early 90s had
less to do the actual mix
itself and more to do with
the fact that the station in
question was nearly the
only place to find music
now better classified as
EDM. And that skeptic would
be right.
Time has not been kind
to a lot of the choices of
Dance Mix 1990 and
Dance Mix 1991. All-time
classic dance songs, songs
that will continue to get
people onto the floor
decades later, were few
and far between. If you’re
going to make a compilation, make it worthwile.
Don’t get the rights for a
handful of good songs, put
your feet on the table and
say ‘Good job, guys, let’s
take the rest of the year
off ’. But 1992 saw a slight
change in that. Gregorian
chanting has gone the way
of… Gregorian monks.
The songs in the mix have
improved. 2 Unlimited’s
Get Ready For This has
started official celebrations for decades by now.
But for some reason, it’s
track number 17 of 17. It’s
sort of like asking people
if they’re ready to rock
and roll just as the stage is
being taken down.
Song number one? The
soulful half-rappy, pre-trip
hop Set Adrift on Memory
Bliss by P.M. Dawn. This
radio-friendly lite-FM staple samples Spandau Ballet’s True, itself an
overdramatic ballad
about platonic friendship.
So, party time is here!
The nearly perpetually
shirtless Ralph Tresvant,
one of the many ex-members of New edition, was
next on the disc with ‘Sensitivity’, which slows
down the tempo a bit and
bumps up the ratio of
loosely fitting white suitsper-artist.
“Why don’t you listen
to these on shuffle?” is a
question I often get from
people. “Cds aren’t meant
to be played on shuffle,” I
tell them.
But if you’ve been lulled
into sleep by the first two
tracks, most of the next
seven will blow your mind
away. Naughty By Nature’s
O.P.P., Right Here Right
Now by Jesus Jones, Unbelievable by EMF, I’m Too
Sexy by Right Said Fred,
Strike it Up by Black Box
and Good Vibrations from
future anti-vaxxer Marky
Mark (Wahlberg) and the
Funky Bunch featuring
Loletta Holloway.
(I Wanna Give You) Devotion, a House classic
from the U.K.’s Nomad, the
first song Steve McCutcheon from the group
ever wrote, rounds out
what may have been the
best 1-7 punch in dance
music history. Each of
these songs sound almost
perfect bumping into each
other and within their
own context and people
in 1992 really DUG this
stuff.
Clearly, someone knew
what they were doing as
this is nearly everything
that anyone could ask for
in a mix.
Next week, we’ll look at
the second half of the
album and why it all kind
of went downhill after
that.
Twenty fun Canadian facts
LISA GOUDY
Happy Birthday, Canada!
Today is our country’s
148th birthday. While
there are easily far more
than 148 fun facts about
Canada, here are 20 tidbits to enjoy.
1. More snakes are
seen in Winnipeg than
anywhere else. The Narcisse Snake Dens conversation area is 130
kilometers north of Winnipeg where one can see
tens of thousands of
garter snakes come out
of their dens between
mid-April and early May.
2. There is a secret
underground lab in Ontario. SNOLAB, designed
for neutrino and dark
matter physics, is the
deepest clean laboratory
in the world for this kind
of work in Sudbury, Ont.
3. In 1967, people built
the world’s first UFO
Landing Pad in St. Paul
in Alberta as a centennial project in 1967. Paul
Hellyer, the then Minister of National Defense,
officially opened it.
4. Canada is home to
the highest tides in the
world in the Bay of
Fundy in New Brunswick.
5. Canada’s coastline
is 243,977 kilometers, the
longest coastline of any
country.
6. The coldest temperature recorded in
Canada is -63C on Feb. 3,
1957 in Snag in Yukon.
7. The Prairies might
be the top end of Tornado Alley, but Iceberg
Alley can be found in
Labrador and Newfoundland. Every spring, large
ice islands broken off
glaciers in Greenland
come through Iceberg
Alley past the coast of
Labrador and Newfoundland. Some people harvest hese chunks for cool
products such as wine,
vodka, beer and skincare
products.
8. Della Falls in B.C. is
the highest waterfall in
Canada at 440 meters
high.
9. The sunniest place
in Canada is Estevan,
Sask. With 2,537 hours of
sunshine per year.
10. Approximately 90
per cent of Canada’s population is concentrated
within 160 kilometers of
the Canada and U.S. border.
11. Scott Abbott, a
sports journalist for
Canadian Press who was
born in Montreal and
Chris Haney, a journalist
for the Montreal Gazette
who was born in
Welland, Ont., invented
the game Trivial Pursuit.
12. We all love baseball, but the baseball
glove was invented in
1883 in Canada.
13. The oldest golf
club in North America is
the Royal Montreal Golf
Club, founded in 1873.
14. Wood Buffalo National Park, located on
the border of northern
Alberta and southern
Northwest Terrirories,
was created in 1922 to
protect the world’s
largest herd of roaming
wood bison. The park is
bigger than the size of
Switzerland.
15. The Canadian
motto is A Mari Usque ad
Mare meaning from sea
to sea.
16. More than 200,000
pancakes are served during the Calgary Stampede.
17. Looking for beer?
The Moosehad Brewery
turns out 1,642 bottles of
beer every minute. It is
located in Saint John in
New Brunswick.
18. The largest domestic lobster was caught in
Nova Scotia in 1977. It
was 9.3 kilograms.
19. Of all the polar
bears in the world, 50
per cent of them live in
Nunavut.
20. The Regina Tornado of June 30, 1912 had
winds of 330 to 416 kilometers per hour, rated as
an F4. It killed 28 people

was the most severe tornado ever to occur in
Canada.

Live well
between your ears
are based in the U.S., and cost about $35
per month. Recent figures indicate there
are more than 40 online dating sites in
North America, and they’ve changed the
man-meets-woman landscape.
Five percent of all internet users have
paid to use an online dating service according to Pew (2010). The Online Dating
magazine reports that between 2007 and
2010, 17 per cent of marriages started
with an online meeting, one out of five
people have dated someone they met online, and internet dating is the third most
popular way for people to meet, just behind meeting through work or introduced
by friends.
In the past three of four years I’ve
viewed several hundred personal profiles.
I interacted with many, but only had first
dates with as few as five or six. Of those, I
only dated three of them more than once.
Why so few? I was picky, happy with life
as single person, and, besides, I’d been
spoiled by the good looks and lively personality of the previous few women in my
life. Based on my own experience and the
experience of women I’ve met (they’ve
been more than willing to talk about their
online adventures) here’s what I know
about online dating. In general, it’s a good
way to meet people. It beats the bar, introduction by friends, and spending money
to get yourself out and about. Until you
get to know and trust the person you are
dating, always meet them in public places
rather than a personal residence. People
who are attracted to you enough to meet
you don’t need to know where you live
until you are certain you want them to. Of course, you need to watch for and
DOUG SPENCER,
PhD
ONLINE DATING
“Dating is a numbers game, and online dating
has the best odds.” - Judsen Culbreth,
“Online dating is just as murky and full of
lemons as finding a used car in the classifieds.
Once you learn the lingo, it's easier to spot the
models with high mileage and no warranty.” –
Laurie Perry
I
first put up my profile on an Internet
dating service in 1998. I was on Love
at AOL, the most popular site by far
at that time. It’s how I met my second wife. We exchanged about four
emails, talked on the phone once or
twice, agreed to meet at a restaurant,
began to date, moved in together, and got
married in a year. Although we divorced
nine years later, it was a good match and
we are still best friends.
About three years after we divorced I
put myself back online. I’ve used three
sites: POF (Plenty of Fish), Match.Com
and Seniorpeoplemeet.com. Match.com
was the best. Plenty of Fish is the largest
in the world, it’s free, and is headquartered in British Columbia. The other two
question inconsistencies. If she’s 30, dropdead good looking, and you’re a wrinkled
65 year old, something is not adding up,
move on to the next one. Similarly, if
you’re a 65-year-old woman from the
prairies, and he’s 40, claims to live on the
west coast, can’t string eight words together to make a sentence but says he really appreciates older womenagainit’s
smelling a little fishy.
I never responded to anyone who did
not post a picture, and, for the most part,
the women I met didn’t either. And why
would you? I also didn’t continue any kind
of interaction if I learned they were disabled, carried a lot of baggage, or they offered tidbits about themselves, their
families, past jobs, that were contradictory. When you’re a perfectly happy single
person, it doesn’t make sense to knowingly go into a relationship with built in
negatives and hints of untruths.
Another thing to note is people lie, or
at least stretch the truth. Men lie about
their income and women lie about their
weight. Yes, men and women lie about
other things too, but the big lies from men
tend to be about income, money matters,
or how important they are, while women
lie about their weight. You would be
amazed at what “A few extra pounds”
looks like for some women! But I also
heard about guys who said they were fit
but showed up looking like the Pillsbury
Dough Boy.
Women do a better job of describing
themselves than do men. Apparently,
most men who sign up to meet Miss Right
are grammatically challenged, and offer
some version of a one-liner that says, “I'm
a kinda fit but sorta heavy guy who likes
to fish and outdoors things." That may be
unfair to many guys, but I heard similar
accounts from a lot of women. They didn’t
pull any punches when describing how
dumb many guys came across.
What seems to work well for men and
women is a heartfelt, well-written, descriptive account of who you are, what
you like to do and what characteristics
you admire in a mate. Inclusion of a few
pictures is a good idea. It’s basically no
different than wanting to make a favorable impression on any first meeting with
someone you’re hoping will be your
friend. It’s all we can ever do - put our best
foot forward and live well between our
ears. [A CLOSER LOOK]
Doug Spencer was born in Moose Jaw in
1947. He grew up in Imperial, Sask., and received a BA and MA in psychology from the
University of Saskatchewan. In 1976 he
earned a PhD in psychology from the University of Manitoba.
Following eight years on the faculty at
Brandon University he took advantage of a
rare opportunity and moved his family to
the U.S.A. He spent three years in international sales and traveled extensively mostly
in Africa and the Middle East followed by
22 years as branch manager for two large
financial services firms. In 2008, missing the solitude, openness,
dark nights, and bright stars of rural
Saskatchewan, he retired, bought a house
online—sight-unseen in a place he had
never visited—renovated it, packed his stuff
in a U-Haul truck, left California, and returned.
Struggling With Healthy Eating
CRYSTAL ZAKALUZNY
DOUBLE SHIFT CONDITIONING
Why is that we cannot achieve the success we want with healthy eating? It’s almost like we think we are invincible. “ I
can eat that ice cream and then I will
work it off.” Seriously? We tend to be all
talk and no action. The choices we make
ultimately affect the final goal. So if you
choose to eat ice cream you better be
willing to work it off or make healthier
food choices the rest of the day.
Recently, I found a quote on the Internet, “What you eat in private is eventually
what you wear in public”. How powerful
and true is this statement? Many of us
want to be toned and lean. How can we
ever achieve that look if we eat foods that
only get us further away from our goals?
Here are five tips to achieve healthier
eating:
Write it down. Every food and drink
that passes your lips should be written
down. Only then can we get a real picture
of what works for our bodies. Then you
can see where you are lacking veggies
and water and needing to eat more lean
proteins.
Positive Mindset. We are our own
worst enemy. I often hear excuses of why
someone can’t eat healthy before we even
embark on the journey. Yes you can do it!
Think positive and you will look amazing,
feel amazing and act amazing on this incredible journey of healthy eating. You
are fuelling your body to be the best it
can be.
Take action now, even if it’s not perfect. Start slow. Add a serving of veggies
to each day or an extra glass of water. Try
a new protein source or add an extra one
to your day. Trying to be 100 per cent perfect the first day is a recipe for disaster.
Start slow, as in baby steps! Tell your
friends. If you have the right support system in place and you tell all your friends
then they won’t invite you out for cheese-
cake. You can plan a walk with friends instead. You need constant support and in
turn you will probably inspire your
friends to take healthier steps as well.
Be active. You do not need to join a
gym. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk to work or ride your bike. Play
with your kids. It’s amazing how the simple things in life have escaped us and we
need to go back to the basics.
You can only achieve a leaner you if
you work towards those goals. What you
wear in public is a direct statement of
what you are doing to help yourself. Take
action now and prove that you can be the
best you can be.

Five youths draw $25 fines

The sequel to Central Collegiate’s graduation party

fines of $25 and costs on
each of five youths charged
with having liquor in a
place other than a dwelling
house.
Alternative was 25 days

The court was told the
liquor was seized during a
raid on the graduating
class at Buffalo Pound
Lake north of Moose Jaw,
where a wiener roast was
held. Approximately 30 t0
35 cars had been in the
motorcade to the lake.
One of the five accused

City looking to dump dangerous intersection
FROM MAY 2, 1994
The route to the city
dump may be changing.
Doug Kelly, resident
engineer with the
provincial department of
highways and transportation, says work so
far involves preliminary
design options and costs
to change the intersection of Corsterphine Ave.
and the Trans-Canada
Highway on the city’s
east side.
The intersection is
mainly used by city
garbage trucks and others hauling to the city
landfill.
The accident rate at
the intersection is not
significantly high, says
Kelly.
“However, it is high
enough to have us look
at why there are problems inthis location.”
Two people have been
killed and 16 injured in
22 accidents at the inter-
section since 1988.
The intersection is located just below the
crest of a hill and poses
sight line difficulties for
westbound highway traffic. Traffic across the intersection has some
sight problems.
A proposal to change
the intersection was
withdrawn two years ago
when the city and Rural
Municipality of Moose
Jaw objected to the design.
“The city didn’t like
that route because it involved too much travelling for the garbage
trucks,” said Kelly.
High construction
costs were also a factor
in the withdrawal.
“What we’re looking at
now is various low-cost
alternatives that won’t
mean any great detours
for the city access.”
The highways depart-
ment still has to approve
the design and costs.
“Assuming we get approval, we’d like to get it
done this summer.”

FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC
Nickeltree preparing to record seventh album this summer
MATTHEW GOURLIE
As you get older your priorities change, but James Irving is proof that you don’t
have to turn away from
your passions.
Most musicians don’t
start their day bailing hay
before going to a gig, but
such is the life for Irving.
The Nickeltree lead singer
laughs at the contradiction, but he is happy with
where he is.
Over six albums and
nearly two decades as a
band, Nickeltree has built a
strong following, but their
reality as a band is different
than it once was.
“We all have families so
we don’t play as many
shows as we once did,” Irving said. “We used to play
100-plus shows a year and
now if we get to 20 shows,
that’s a good year.”
Saturday Irving played a
solo show at Chillers. With
the busy lives of his other
bandmates — and their increased distance geographically — that’s a far more
regular occurrence for the
Nickeltree frontman. Melinda Grass and Kelly
Grass joined him for a
handful of songs before
playing their own set.
Irving played two sets of
songs spanning the entire
Nickeltree catalogue. He
also played some songs
from their upcoming seventh album that he plans
to record along with bandmates Kevin Baker, Colin
Lynn and David Sabine
later this summer for a fall
release. That will coincide
with a tour of
Saskatchewan and a few
dates in and around
Toronto.
“There’s still a solid
Nickeltree fan base out
there,” Irving said.
Timing and a quirk of
fate led to some confusion
when they were first starting out.
In the late 90s Nickeltree
and Nickelback were both
independent prairie rock
bands. Irving said they
would sometimes get mistaken for Hanna, Alberta’s
favourite sons. For a short
spell they were in pretty
similar places in their careers.
“We started off at the
same time as them and we
ended up on the same bill
in Rockin’ The Valley in
Craven. That was when
they were just getting
going. We actually contemplated whether we should
change our name and we
stuck to it,” Irving said. “It was two roads —
they went off and made billions and we’re still plugging away.”
Nickeltree hit the road
themselves — moving the
band to Toronto in search
of a breakthrough. “We had a good following in Western Canada and
we played lots. We all had
part-time jobs, but the
band was our main focus,”
Irving said. “We decided to
head out to Toronto to see
how we would do out
there. We played tons. We
played between 150 and
200 shows that first year.

quality and design are

HELPING YOU IS WHAT WE DO!
There were lots of places to
play, but as far as making
the next leap, I guess we
didn’t do that, but it was
still a great experience.”
Irving farms between
Regina and Moose Jaw and
teaches at Riverview. He is
happy with his life, but admits it wasn’t easy to decide to pull back from the
band and focus on a day
job.
“Everybody was still
doesn’t intend to stop any
time soon.
“I always kind of
thought I would stop doing
it when I stopped having
any creative activity and
I’m not writing any more
songs. That’s when I
thought I would let die,” he
said. “I’ve got enough material that we’re going to
record our seventh album.
I think the music is as good
as it was when we were
younger, so I’m going to
keep going until the valve
shuts off.”
passionate about the band,
but we were getting to that
age where we were all married and starting to think
about family too,” he said.
“That was the point where
the band didn’t become the
primary focus any more. I
don’t want to say a hobby,
because I think calling it a
hobby trivializes it and it’s
more than a hobby, but it is
secondary to other stuff.”
At Riverview, Irving
runs their Hockey Canada
Skills Academy along with
Jeff Kitts and also runs a
rock band program.
“It’s really unique to
Saskatchewan. There are
very few schools that have
this program. Most have
the traditional concert
band or a jazz band, but we
have students who come in
and 60-70 per cent of them
have a minimal musical
background,” he explained.
“I teach them bass, guitar
and drums and they gravitate to whatever instrument that they seem to
like. We do a lot of shows
throughout the year. It’s basically like being a practicing musician — you
practice, get to know songs
and play some shows. They
get to see if this is something they might want to
do.”
Irving is still making
music for the love it and he

Kendra’s tried meeting people at bars and clubs, but they weren’t
right for her. She tried online dating, but it was a disaster. Kendra
joined our service because she wants someone who is serious and
genuine about having a lasting relationship, who is compatible
with her, respectful, kind, and her financial equal; someone she
can spend her life with. She can’t wait to
meet a man who is kind, caring, open,
honest, and serious about commitment.

David Lloyd Dalgarno
Lloyd passed away June 18, 2015 at the age of 95 years.
Lloyd was born February 9, 1920 and grew up on the
family farm first ploughed in the early 1880's by his
grandfather and district pioneer, Andrew Dalgarno, and
later by his father Kenneth in 1918. Lloyd lived a vibrant
and fulfilling life. During his youth, Lloyd was an avid
sports enthusiast playing baseball, hockey and curling.
Well rounded, Lloyd also taught himself to play musical
instruments and became a remarkable pencil artist. In the
1950's, Lloyd enjoyed his Studebaker sports car and his
boat. He was one of the first to water ski at Buffalo Pound.
Lloyd also travelled to places like Hawaii and custom
combined in the U.S. Lloyd married Kathleen Joyce (nee
Rathwell) October 1, 1960 and returned to farming that
same year. He farmed until his retirement in 1992. Lloyd
was devoted to his family and their wellbeing. He was
always in attendance at his children's functions and
events. Even into his 80's Lloyd enjoyed babysitting his
granddaughters when they were young.
Lloyd was
predeceased by his mother Lily May (nee Smail) and father
George Kenneth Dalgarno; his two brothers; Keith
Alexander (Sandy) and Edgar Vaughan. He is survived by
his loving wife of 55 years, Kathleen Joyce: son, Herbert
Kenneth (Lucia) their two daughters Jasmine and Justine;
adoring daughter Margaret Jane (Ron Warner). Lloyd is
also survived by sisters-in-law; Olive and Verna and
numerous nieces and nephews. As per Lloyd's wishes
there will be no funeral. In living memory of Lloyd, a
memorial planting will be made by W.J. Jones & Son
Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at

Cameron Norberg
RININSLAND
Cameron Norberg of Mazenod,
SK passed away on March 1,
2015, at the age of 60 years.
Cameron was born on July 21,
1954, at Mossbank, SK. He was
the only child of Russell and
Kaye (nee Milne) Norberg.
Cameron attended grades one
through nine at the Mazenod
School. In the fall of 1969
Cameron began his high school
education at Mossbank School
and graduated in 1972. Cameron
was a member of the Mossbank football team and in the
winter months enjoyed snowmobiling with his dad. After
graduation Cameron began to take on more responsibility
on the family farm. He enjoyed farm life with his parents
until 1983, when they semi-retired and moved to Moose
Jaw. Cameron continued to farm with help from his
parents when they could, and on occasion cousins would
come to help with harvest. Cameron was involved with
many farming and community organizations. He served as
chairperson of the Mazenod Coop, was co-treasurer and
bookkeeper for Mazenod Cemetery, was a member of the
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, supported and participated in
numerous Mazenod Hall functions, and could quite often
be found dressed up as Santa Claus at community
Christmas functions. When Cameron had spare time from
his farming and volunteering responsibilities he enjoyed
riding his dirt bike, trap shooting, collecting and shooting
new and antique guns, attending Roughrider games, and
collecting model and full size Chevy trucks. Life changed
drastically on January 9, 1996, when Cameron's mom
passed away and again when his dad passed away on
June 22, 2002. Cameron continued to farm, but his
passion for farming faded over the next five years and in
2008 he made the decision to sell the farm. Cameron then
decided to invest in a greenhouse south of Moose Jaw and
worked there for a couple of years. For the next two
summers he worked at a nearby farm. Cameron
vacationed in Mexico for a couple of winters, and met
many people that he became good friends with. He also
went on a cruise, and traveled to South America. He
especially enjoyed trips to Cuba. Cameron was a very
caring person and was always willing to help those in
need. He spent a lot of time the past four years in Spanish,
Ontario, helping to care for a long time friend who was ill.
Cameron always tried to make the best of his life; he never
complained and always appreciated those who cared for
him. Cameron will be dearly missed. Family Graveside
Service was held on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 11:00
a.m., at the Mazenod Cemetery, followed by a time of
lunch and fellowship at the Mazenod Hall. The eulogy was
shared by Marv Weiss. Urn bearer was Danielle
Lamontagne. Memorial donations in memory of Cameron
to the Mazenod Community Hall and the Saskatchewan
Wildlife Federation were greatly appreciated.
Heinrich
Konrad
Friedrich
"Henry" Rininsland, aged 86
years of Moose Jaw, SK, passed
away on Saturday, June 20th,
2015. He was born in Hannover,
Germany on November 7th,
1928.
His family moved to
Wildungen in central Germany
when he was 2, where he spent
his childhood and teen years. He
attended public school and 4
years of top level ("Gymnasium")
high school. At age 16 Henry
was drafted into the German
military and spent the next 2 years manning anti-aircraft
guns. He was taken prisoner of war by the American
military and spent the next 2 years working for the
American military, who allowed him to finish his high
school education. After working as a miner in various
mines in Germany, Henry moved to Leoben, Austria to
study mining engineering. He obtained his engineering
degree while working nights in a steel mill. While there he
met and married Inge Zesch, the love of his life. They
went on to have a wonderful marriage for the next 58
years. Henry and Inge spoke fluent English. Because of
his engineering skills, he was given the opportunity to
assist in building the Lanigan Potash Mine and without
hesitation, he moved the family to Lanigan, SK in 1967.
Henry managed the Lanigan mine from 1967 to 1974. Due
to the mine being sold under duress to the Saskatchewan
Government, he made the difficult decision to move back
to Germany in 1974. He became Chief Engineer of
Europe's largest potash mine in Heringen, Germany until
he retired in 1991. Henry and Inge always wanted to
return to Canada and they were able to immigrate to
Moose Jaw in 1992. They spent a wonderful retirement
together until his passing. Henry was interested in stamp
collecting, gardening and travelling. He and Inge travelled
extensively to Hawaii, within Canada, and back to Germany
and Austria. He was a voracious reader, especially
interested in history. Henry was a loving and wonderful
husband, father and grandfather. He was predeceased by
his parents, Heinrich and Gertrude Rininsland. Henry is
survived with fond memories by his wife, Inge Rininsland
(Zesch); son, Volker (Pat) Rininsland of Moose Jaw, SK;
daughter, Gertrude (Manfred) Hennies of Wiesbaden,
Germany; son, Uwe (Petra) Rininsland of Obersuhl,
Germany; daughter, Frauke Rininsland (Bill Bruno) of
Santa Fe, New Mexico; and grandchildren: Andrew and
Vanessa Rininsland, Jens, Lars and Erik Hennies, and
Andrea Bruno. A Memorial Service will be held on
Friday, June 26th, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Moose Jaw
Funeral Home. As an expression of sympathy, donations
in Henry's name may be made to The Moose Jaw Humane
