Episode: The Slumber Party
Lesson: Be responsible.
Bible verse to remember:
Good people live right and God blesses the children who follow their example. Proverbs 20:7
SYNOPSIS:
Assured by Sister that she knows the meaning of responsibility, Mama and Papa
allow her to go to a sleepover at Lizzy’s house. However, Mama and Papa are totally
unaware that the Bruins have gone out and left a babysitter in charge. When practically
every cub in town shows up at the party, it gets so out of hand that when the Bruins
return they call all the parents to come and take their cubs home. Although Mama and
Papa agree that Sister is partially to blame, they also realize that if they had been a
little more responsible themselves, they would have found out about the babysitter
early enough to nip it in the bud.
TO TALK ABOUT:
Sister said responsibility means not messing up and “doing what I know is right.”
When do you show you are responsible?
Who made the mess at the sleepover?
In this episode, when did Sister and the other cubs act responsibly?
In the Bible, Jesus told his helpers to tell others about him. We are Jesus’ helpers too. When you tell
someone about Jesus, you are being responsible. Following up with what Jesus said, who can you
tell about Jesus?
SOMETHING TO DO:
Long ago, God gave Noah a big job. Noah was to build a huge boat that would float in a flood, even though there had never been any rain!
Noah was responsible and did what God said. Read the story of Noah in Genesis 6–8.
Write down a job you promise to do. For example, you might write, “I will make my bed every morning” or “I will give my pet fresh water three
times a day.” Sign the paper and give it to your parent. This agreement can be called a contract. When you do what you promise, you are acting
responsibly.
TO THE PARENT:
“Be responsible for your actions” is commonly said as parents try to help children practice
being independant and reliable. After all, children often shift blame, excuse their actions or
pretend not to hear when a chore is left undone or a directive is ignored.
In this episode, the bear cubs learn that “privileges and responsibility go hand-in-hand.”
Unfortunately, it’s often easier and quicker to give a child a privilege without strings
attached. When that happens, though, a child misses a valuable learning opportunity.
Papa Bear was right: privilege and responsibility go together for parents as well as cubs.

Episode: The Talent Show
Lesson: Encourage others.
Bible verse to remember:
You must encourage and help each other. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
SYNOPSIS:
Convinced that he doesn’t have any talent to offer for the upcoming school talent
show, Brother is recruited to be the talent scout. Guided by Teacher Bob’s conviction
that everyone has talent, Brother helps the other cubs discover their own special talents,
and in so doing, discovers he also has a talent just as Teacher Bob suspected–a talent
for finding talent.
TO TALK ABOUT:
In this episode, Brother Bear was a talent scout.
What does that mean?
Why was Brother Bear surprised that Too Tall was such a good singer?
Were you surprised, too?
Brother Bear had an ability to encourage others. Who encourages you?
The Bible says that each of us has special talents. In this episode, many cubs discovered their special gifts.
What is a special talent or gift God has given you?
SOMETHING TO DO:
When we think about a gift, we might imagine a wrapped box with a bow on the top. But in this episode, gifts are defined as things the cubs could
do or abilities they have. Draw a picture that shows you using one of the special gifts God has given you.
Look in the mirror. Where are the gifts and talents God has given you?
TO THE PARENT:
Parents introduce a variety of activities to a child, hoping he/she will find something they enjoy, learn
skills and have a positive social experience. However, sometimes the goal of “having fun” gets buried
in a hectic schedule, lost during competitive events or shifted to a parent’s list of “must-do” activities.
And yet, “It’s not fun” is the most common reason older children quit a sport or activity.
To help your child maintain the joy, read your child’s body language as he/she prepares
for practices or events. Talk about what they especially enjoy about the activity. When
you periodically re-examine the goals for the activity, the focus stays appropriately on
meeting your child’s needs and maximizing their gifts, not on a personal parenting agenda.

Episode: Go To Camp
Lesson: Friends listen.
Bible verse to remember:
I am the Lord your God...I heard you pray. Isaiah 38:5
SYNOPSIS:
The cubs have had a fantastic summer at day camp. When camp leader, Grizzly Ted,
announces an end-of-summer sleep-out at Skull Rock, everyone is excited...everyone
except Sister. She’s anxious about sleeping outside. With the help of her friend Lizzy,
Sister has a trial camp-out in her own backyard and is able to overcome her anxiety
of sleeping under the stars.
TO TALK ABOUT:
What day camp activities did the cubs enjoy?
Why was sleeping in the backyard before the sleep-out a good idea?
Sister told Lizzy, “Once I told you what was bothering me, I wasn’t so worried.”
Who listens to your problems?
The Bible tells us that God will always hear our prayers. When do you talk to God?
SOMETHING TO DO:
Sister went on a camp-out, but you can have a “camp-in.” Find an out-of-the-way place to “camp” in the house. Then snuggle into a blanket
or sheet so it becomes a sleeping bag. Lie down and listen carefully: can you recognize each of the sounds you hear?
In this episode, Lizzy listened to Sister. Take a listening walk through your house. Stop at the door of each room and answer, “What makes
sounds in this room?” Look especially for things that ring, click, creak, buzz, scratch, meow or bark.
TO THE PARENT:
A listening ear: that’s the key to being an “askable parent.” When a child says, “Come over
to my house. My mom will listen to you,” it’s obvious that child has an “askable parent.”
Most parents would like a reputation as a good listener, because that is a key element in
effective communication. “Open your ears and close your mouth” sounds easy, but it’s
tempting to slip into the habit of talking more than listening.
In this episode, Sister appreciated that her friend was a good listener. Your child will
appreciate having an “askable parent,” too.

Episode: The Jump Rope Contest
Lesson: Don’t brag about yourself.
Bible verse to remember:
If you want to brag, do what the Scriptures say and brag about the Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:31
SYNOPSIS:
When Sister is picked to represent her school in the upcoming Jump Rope Contest,
it goes to her head. All the adulation from her friends has Sister convinced she can’t
lose...that is until Lizzy helps her discover that her competition is just as skilled at
rope jumping as she is, if not more so. Although all her boasting has set her up for a
big fall, thanks to Mama and her friends, Sister learns that anyone who tries their
best is a winner.
TO TALK ABOUT:
Sister accused her friend of being jealous.
When have you been jealous?
In what ways did Lizzy help Sister?
Why were Sister’s friends proud of her, even after she lost the contest?
The Bible says we should only brag about what God does. What great things has God done in your life?
SOMETHING TO DO:
Sister’s friends supported her even though she didn’t win first place in the contest. Draw a picture of your friends. Thank God for those people.
Look at photos or videos taken when you were younger. Identify some of the friends in those pictures. Are those people still your friends or
do you have new friends?
TO THE PARENT:
Although sporting fans earn bragging rights when their favorite team wins, some parents show
similar behavior when their child excels. We can be justifiably proud of a child who makes a wise
choice or earns top grades, but when honest pride goes overboard, it becomes bragging.
This occurs most often when a competitive spirit sneaks into parenting. When that happens,
thank God for the talents and gifts he has given your child. Praise him, too, for the privilege
of sharing celebrative moments with your child. This prayerful action can replace a prideful
spirit with a truly thankful heart.

Episode: Visit Fun Park
Lesson: Have courage.
Bible verse to remember:
Be brave and strong...The Lord God will always be at your side, and he will never abandon you. Deuteronomy 31:6
SYNOPSIS:
A ream of free ride tickets given to Mama at the supermarket prompts the Bear family
to go to the amusement park. Brother boasts to friends and family that he’ll fearlessly
ride the legendary Thunderbolt roller coaster. However, when Brother sees how scary
the ride actually is, he spends the rest of his day desperately trying to avoid it.
The moment of reckoning for his boastful behavior comes as Brother is about to
board the dreaded ride and backs out at the last moment.
TO TALK ABOUT:
Why did Brother hand Sister the brass ring for a free ride on the carousel?
When Brother stood at The Thunderbolt and said, “I’m too scared,” how do you think his friend felt?
After Brother admitted he was scared to ride The Thunderbolt, Papa said “It takes courage to speak up
and admit when you’re not ready to do something.” Was Papa right?
The Bible says we can be brave because God is always with us. Does knowing that fact give you courage?
SOMETHING TO DO:
Read about the shepherd boy, David, in 1 Samuel 17:32–51. Why can we say that David had courage?
Play the game, “Stand-up.” Share various scenarios with your child that might require him to be brave. For example, he overhears children talking
about beating up a classmate; sees a classmate making fun of another child; watches a friend steal a candy bar; needs to give a speech in class;
does something wrong, but is afraid to admit it; is scared to stay overnight for a sleepover. After you make each statement, invite your child to
stand up and say how he would have courage in that situation. The physical act of standing up will emphasize to your child how he can stand up
and be brave.
TO THE PARENT:
A child faces many peer situations when he has the opportunity to show courage. Often,
being brave means saying “No” to actions that are wrong. Yet “Just say no” does not
work in all situations. Help your child develop an entire smorgasbord of ways to stand up
to peer pressure. For example, he can act shocked at the idea, make a joke or suggest
another option.
When we think of a courageous person, we might imagine a soldier facing a dangerous
situation. But as your child saw in this episode, sometimes having courage includes
admitting, “I’m afraid.”

Episode: The Perfect Fishing Spot
Lesson: Be content.
Bible verse to remember:
It is better to enjoy what we have than always wanting something else. Ecclesiastes 6:9
SYNOPSIS:
Deciding that they’re going to make Gran and Gramps’ anniversary dinner special,
Papa sets out to catch a prize-winning fish as the main course and Mama sets out to
make one of her blue-ribbon pies for dessert. However, one thing after the other gets
in their way to the point where they find themselves with no fish, no pie and no time.
Ultimately it’s the cubs who help Mama and Papa realize that it’s not what’s on the table
but who comes to it that makes a dinner special.
TO TALK ABOUT:
Why did Papa keep throwing back the fish he caught?
Do you think Mama was happy she climbed to the top of the tree for the very best berries?
Who was happiest at the end of the day: Gran and Gramps? Sister and Brother? Mama and Papa?
The family dog?
The Bible says we should be happy with what God gives us. What makes you especially happy?
SOMETHING TO DO:
In this episode, Mama and Papa try to prepare a special meal. Take a white paper plate or trace around a large plate on a piece of paper.
Now draw a picture of your favorite meal on the paper plate.
An anniversary is when something special happened on a specific date. Your birthday is the anniversary of your birth. Look through the calendar.
How many anniversaries can you count for people in your family?
TO THE PARENT:
A child’s birthday is one of the most anticipated dates of the year. After all, it is “his/her” day.
Although parents can invest a great deal of time, money and emotional energy in hosting a
spectacular party, research shows that the two key components for fun are fairly simple:
food and friends.
In the midst of all the excitement, it’s easy to forget to thank God. And yet a moment of
quiet reflection, in which we join Solomon as the psalmist in saying, “Children are a
blessing and a gift from the Lord,” properly focuses our attention.
