The final five steps to Walk success
Even though the Western PA Walks are over, it doesn’t mean that we stop fundraising for a cure! We still have additional
dollars to raise to reach our goal of $1.1 million. Follow these five easy steps to make a final fundraising push for your Walk team:
Thank all the donors who supported your team and
let them know your team total and your goal. If you
haven’t hit your goal, let people know that there
is still time to donate or hold another wrap-around
event.
Encourage your team members to see if their company
matches gifts. This is a quick and easy way to double
a walk donation and increase your team total. Go to
www.matchinggift.com/jdrf to see if a company that
you know is a matching gift company.
Send your holiday cards out early or send a reminder
to folks on World Diabetes Day (November 14) to
make a final request to all your friends, family and
business contacts. The final day to submit donations
to be counted for awards and incentive prizes is
December 13, 2013.
Use a Discover card for donations or purchases and
Discover (a JDRF national partner) will match 2%
through January 31, 2014.

22nd ANNUAL
Plans are underway for the 22nd annual Rainbow Gala. Here
in Western Pennsylvania, the Rainbow Gala has raised over
$16 million for promising T1D research. This year the gala will
be held on Saturday, April 12th at the Westin Convention Center
Pittsburgh Hotel.
President of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Arthur J. Rooney, II will serve
as the 2014 honoree. “I am proud to be part of an event that supports
JDRF. My family has supported JDRF for many years, as diabetes
has affected several members of my immediate family. I hope and
pray that the important research supported by JDRF will continue
to yield results and make a difference in the lives of those affected by
diabetes,” says Rooney. Joining Mr. Rooney as the 2014 Corporate
Chairs are Leo Gerard, International President of Steelworkers and
David Malone, President & CEO of Gateway Financial. The 2014
Rainbow Gala is sure to be a sellout as it is every year! Don’t delay in
getting your tickets. The Rainbow Gala will feature:
✦An elegant black-tie affair with cocktail party and dinner
✦One-of-a-kind live and silent auctions
✦Fund A Cure where 100% of the monies raised go directly to
T1D research

We are looking for dedicated committee members to serve on
the Rainbow Gala planning committee. The committee meets
once a month and is a great way to get involved with the gala.
The committee works to develop the décor of the event, procures
silent auction items, helps to set up for the event and more! Events
like the Rainbow Gala would not be possible without the support
of volunteers like you! If you are interested in learning how your
skills and talents can make a difference please contact M.C. Houser,
Development Manager at mhouser@jdrf.org or 412-471-1414 x7.

FDA Approval for Artificial
Pancreas Device
Several weeks ago the FDA approved an artificial pancreas
device that could automate the arduous process of blood sugar
regulation. “This approval means people with type 1 diabetes
will have access to technologies on par with the rest of the
world,” said Jeffrey Brewer, president and CEO of JDRF. “We
appreciate all that the FDA and Medtronic have done to bring
this system to people with type 1 diabetes in the U.S., and
look forward to working with researchers, regulators, and the
private sector to accelerate the delivery of even more impactful
improvements in technology to more effectively manage the
disease.”
While monitoring blood sugar through the day is
inconvenient, managing it at night is precarious since levels can
drop dangerously low during sleep. Researchers around the
world have thus been striving to perfect an artificial pancreas
to automate insulin regulation. Recently, researchers at the
medical technology company Medtronic came up with an
external pump called the MiniMed. It looks like a pager and
is wirelessly connected to a glucose monitor on the stomach
that continually keeps track of a person’s blood sugar levels
through a small needle. Based on this data, the MiniMed’s
automated insulin delivery system injects the appropriate doses
to keep glucose levels stable. That makes it the first real robotic
replacement for a pancreas, in that it both detects and regulates
blood sugar levels autonomously.
This device even has an emergency response function to
detect hypoglycemia, which catches low blood sugar episodes
with 93 percent accuracy. If a person’s glucose levels reach a
worrisome threshold, an alarm will sound. If the alarm fails to
rouse the slumbering patient, the system will suspend insulin
delivery for two hours. This could one day allow many of the
26 million Americans with diabetes to sleep more soundly.
The development of an artificial pancreas is one of JDRF’s
top priorities. JDRF and the National Institutes of Health’s
Special Diabetes Program (SDP) have funded groundbreaking
work in recent years to advance its research and development.
JDRF continues to work with Medtronic and other industry
and academic partners on a series of advances that will one day
lead to a fully automated, closed-loop system that can truly be
called an artificial pancreas.

West Virginia Update
On Monday, September 23rd, the Western Pennsylvania
Chapter hosted its 23rd Annual Tee Up to Cure Diabetes golf
outing at Valley Brook Country Club. Thirty-seven foursomes
participated in the outing representing many local companies.
This year’s Tee Up to Cure Diabetes raised over $117,000.
The golf outing would not have been possible without the
leadership of event co-chairs Kerry Pulaski and Eric Rader and
their dedicated committee. JDRF also gratefully acknowledges
the event sponsors who supported this year’s event including:
Presenting Sponsors
The WV Branch held its second annual statewide
symposium for families on October 12-13 at Flatwoods,
WV thanks in large part to a generous grant from Highmark
West Virginia. This educational and fun event attracted more
than 160 people. Connecting on the common ground of
dealing with TID management, a roomful of separate families
transformed into a connected and supportive community.
Session topics included research updates, school issues,
transition to adulthood and nutrition as well as separate sessions
for grandparents, siblings and people with type 1 diabetes.
Tom Brobson, National Director of Research Investment
Opportunities and Carol Oxenreiter, JDRF International Board
Member provided research updates for everyone in attendance.
All the families left looking forward to next year’s symposium!

November 14
World Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day is held on November 14 each year.
The day aims to increase an awareness of the effects of diabetes
and its complications. Through increased awareness, the hope is
for more resources to fight the causes of diabetes and help fund
research into improved treatment options and ultimately a cure.
In honor of diabetes awareness, the Carnegie Science
Center’s E-Motion cone, the top of the Highmark building, the
Wyndham Hotel and the Gulf Tower will all be going blue.
Wear your JDRF blue on November 14th and take
advantage of the day to organize a jeans day, bake sale or other
event in your office/school to support JDRF or make a final
push for donations for your Walk team.

New Family Team Spotlight
Riley’s Rock Stars
Riley is a creative,
energetic, fun-loving
little girl who loves
to dance, draw, sing
and play with her
little sister. Shortly
before her sixth
birthday, she was
diagnosed with T1D.
The last year was not an easy one, but I can
say at this point my family and I are more
informed and have a better understanding
of this diagnosis. Many lessons have been
learned—“counting carbs” has become
the new “normal” in our lives. We
recently got an insulin pump, which has
significantly made improvements in her
blood sugar readings.
When we heard about the Walk to
Cure Diabetes, we were so excited to
build our own team to help raise money
for the cure. We would be surrounded by
a community of people who understood
what we were dealing with and working
towards the same goal. We would get to
see that just because Riley has diabetes
does not mean she can’t live a long,
healthy, happy and fun-filled life.
We decided to name our team Riley’s
Rock Stars. Our fundraising goal was
set at $3,000. Since we were new to
fundraising, my family and I knew that we
had to get creative. We approached friends
and family who were more than generous
By Tracy Costanzo-Sheposh
with contributions to our team. Going to
the local businesses for their support of our
team was also very successful. We even got
our local pizza shop to sell the JDRF paper
sneakers. People offered to host parties
such as Pampered Chef, Origami Owl,
AVON and Thirty-One and a percent of
the sales went to Riley’s team. Another
friend raffled off a custom-made girl’s
dress. We exceeded our fundraising goal
thanks to the 120 donors as well as the 47
walkers that joined Riley in the two-mile
walk. We cannot wait to take our little
Rock Star back to the Walk to see her
celebrate again next year. Riley cannot
take a break from diabetes, so our family
will keep fundraising until there is a cure!

The National Institutes of Health
and the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention announced recently that type
1 diabetes among American youth (people
under age 20) rose by 23 percent between
2001 and 2009. At this rate, type 1 diabetes
will double every generation. Additionally,
diabetes costs our nation over $245 billion
annually, a staggering 41 percent increase
from 2007.
While the growth in statics is alarming,
the Special Diabetes Program (SDP) is
making meaningful progress in research
studies and human clinical trials that are
accelerating progress towards curing,
treating and preventing type 1 diabetes.
A few of the SDP research achievements
that are improving lives and will ultimately
yield significant savings to our nation’s
health care system include:
•Artificial pancreas technologies, which
would help people to better manage
their blood sugar levels and avoid longterm and costly complications, are being
tested in outpatient human clinical trials
approved by the FDA and are closer to
being on the market.
•The discovery that 6.5 years of intensive
blood glucose control can cut in half the
onset of impaired kidney function of
T1D patients.
•A treatment that reached the market last
year preserves and even improves vision
in people who have diabetic eye disease.
This advance makes the difference
between being able to see well enough
to drive or hold a job—or not—and
carry out other daily activities.
These are only a few of the many
developments that are the result of SDP.
The groundbreaking discoveries made
possible by the SDP are already improving
diabetes care for the 26 million Americans
combating the disease in ways that will
reduce long-term health expenditures for
costly diabetes complications.
Rallying support for the SDP will
enable us to continue the critical
momentum in diabetes research and care
and do more to help bring diabetes-related
costs under control. If you have not already
done so, now is the time to contact your
congressman to urge them to help by
supporting the SDP.

and play games. Most of
all, our families were able to enjoy each other’s company in a
fun environment. We hope to see even more families at next
year’s event!
New this fall and just around the corner is our 1st Annual
JDRF T1D Symposium presented by Highmark Inc. The
Symposium is being held November 16, 2013 at the Carnegie
Science Center. We’re expecting over 200 people to attend,
learn about the latest research, and attend multiple educational
sessions on all things T1D—from technology to traveling.
We also have the Annual JDRF Celebrity Hockey game
on January 4, 2014. Many of you attended last year’s game and
saw the JDRF team upset the Pittsburgh Celebrity Hockey
team for the second year in a row! It was a huge win for our
players and for JDRF; raising over $3,000 toward a cure! This
year’s game will be held at Blade Runners in Warrendale.
We hope you will join us in cheering on our JDRF team to
another victory again this year!

Pittsburgh Marathon
Visit www.team.jdrf.org/pittsburghmarathon to

Pittsburgh Marathon.
Sunday, May 4, 2014
By Ron Fingers
Participating on Team JDRF for the Pittsburgh Marathon
(either full, half or relay) is a very rewarding experience. Not
only does it help raise money and awareness to help improve
the lives for people with T1D, but as a participant it also
provides extra motivation and inspiration to be out there
with other runners running for the same cause. Wearing the
JDRF shirt, I have heard many spectators cheer on Team
JDRF during the event. Support like that goes a long way
when you need the extra push. One of my favorite moments
of the 2012 marathon (aside from the finish line), was when a
fellow runner approached me before the start and told me he
has T1D, running the full marathon, and thanked me for the
support. Seeing him at the JDRF tent following the marathon
was even better—I thanked him for being an inspiration for
everyone with, or who loves someone with T1D.
Choosing to complete an endurance event, such as a half or
full marathon, to me is a lot like managing my son Maddox’s
diabetes. During the event you will have highs and lows, and
want to quit. The only motivation that you need to push
through is to look down at your Team JDRF shirt. Knowing
you are running for a cause, with others like you, is enough
to help you push through the tough spots and continue on.
Managing diabetes presents similar challenges, ups and downs—
but the goal isn’t a finish line, it’s a cure for this disease.
For 2013, the Team JDRF experience will be bigger and
better than ever before. With training programs for people at
all levels, Team JDRF will help you set your goal, get you
to the finish line, and help make a difference for people with
T1D. I look forward to seeing more Team JDRF shirts on
race day!

through the support of research.
The Walk to Cure Diabetes is JDRF’s largest fundraiser. There are more than 200
Walks in the United States and dozens more take place internationally with more
than 900,000 participating each year. The Walk draws people together in a healthy
activity for a worthy cause, raising money to help find better treatments and a cure
for type 1 diabetes. It’s fun for families and builds camaraderie among company
employees.
Even if you weren’t able to attend the Walks this year, you can be part of the
success by being a Virtual Walker! Your support will ensure that JDRF continues to
fund research to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and to develop new treatments that
make life better for the millions of children and adults worldwide who are affected.
