APRIL 2013
RECTOR’S CORNER
St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas is a bilingual Episcopal Church
serving Vancouver and Southwest Washington
since 1853.
Our vision is to answer God’s call
to be an Anglo-Hispanic faith community
that works together to share the love of Christ.
With the guidance of the Holy Spirit,
our mission is to extend hospitality to all,
to respond to human need through service,
and to grow in faith together.
The work which we have done, Parish, Vestry and
Clergy, to give ourselves a vision toward the future
of St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas, and to guide us in our ministry has developed the Vision and Mission statements that you find above. In view of Easter, the
Resurrection, and the hope we have in our hearts,
I am writing you to unpack the words and sentences.
First Sentence: When I came to St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas, you had already celebrated 150 years as a congregation, and established a mission of the Gospel in
Spanish 12 years ago. The Parish never had a fully
bilingual clergy in any position, much less that of
Rector. The Parish called me to be Rector, knowing I
had at least one language (Spanish) in addition to
English. I had been in charge of multi-cultural ministries at a diocesan level. I had years of growing up in
another culture, and cared very much what culture
conveys, its goodness and failings. The description of
who we are (the first sentence) describes the reality
of the Parish’s history, its unique ministry in two
languages, and its particular sphere of ministry in
the northwest.
Second Sentence: Integration of Hispanic (Latino)
ministry with English (Anglo) ministry is a challenge
that is worthy of the Gospel and of our catholic heri-
ABRIL 2013
tage. Integration denotes mutuality, serving one another, sharing in Christ’s love as a true community
of faith, deriving its identity from God’s call to mission. It is not an achievement we can expect to fully
be realized in our lifetime! It will take as long as it
takes, given our condition as human beings, prone to
misunderstanding and sinfulness. The Vision
(second sentence) is a Big Holy Audacious Goal
(BHAG) towards which we work, as we continue on
a pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Heaven, where all
will be fulfilled. It’s ambitious. It’s real! And it is a
challenge we take up joyfully!
Third Sentence: In our desire to walk the Way of
Jesus the Christ, we have core values which represent areas of gift and challenge: When I arrived, I
found the Parish was the most truly hospitable
church I had ever been. More and more, I come to
appreciate the level of “Radical Welcome” which the
Parish shows to visitors and newcomers alike.
Radical Welcome is the title of The Rev. Stephanie
Spellers’ book, and some of you have read it and
practice it. I read it before I came, without knowing
the Parish I was coming to had already done the
same! Wonders never cease! The Parish also has a
long history of serving the community around it
through the founding of the Free Clinic, volunteerism and the giving of gifts. We host a number of
great programs, such as the Columbia Counseling
Center and the NA group, which have been using
our space for more than 30 years! It is an awesome
track record of generosity. As with all active
churches, our Parish spends time forging bonds of
affection, caring for each other, learning and growing through prayer and worship. Our music programs are excellent, our love of social time profound,
and our faith in God’s love for us without limit. We
pray always for the Holy Spirit to be active in our
ministries of hospitality and human services, and to
THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO

be palpable in our prayers and worship, so that we
may know that we are guided by God in all we try
to do.
As we look forward to the future, may God’s power
to renew, resurrect, and bless all of our work together be manifest, that God’s name may be glorified, and God’s people may be served.
Fr. Jaime Case
Primera Declaración: Cuando vine a St. Luke’s ~
THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO
Padre Jaime Case
MINISTERIO A NIÑOS
historias, juegos, comida y artes. Amigos y vecinos
bienvenidos. Vamos a necesitar voluntarios para
ayudarnos, y les pido que me avisen.

SEMINARIAN AT
ST. LUKE’S ~ SAN LUCAS
Michael Wright, who is in the process to be a priest
in the Diocese of Olympia, will be doing his Field
Education here at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. Michael is
a chaplain at a hospital in Longview, and attends St.
Stephen’s there. He will start on April 21 and on that
day he will preach at the 10:00 am service.
Field Education is the method to provide seminarians and others aspiring to the priest hood to comply
with the “Practical training and experience” [Canon
III]. For most of the priests, that means 400 hours in
the hospitals, or the equivalent of one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education. For Chaplains, like Michael
Wright, who work in hospitals, the opposite direction is substituted, by giving the student time in the
parish to learn about parish ministry. The requirement of 400 hours is pretty much the same. He will
be with us for a while.
Michael will be learning about worship, pastoral
care, planning, finance, parish organizations, and
other basic concerns in a parish setting. He plans to
continue as a chaplain, not as a parish priest, so this
is just to round out his understanding of how a parish works, without making him ready necessarily
for parish ministry.
MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL WRIGHT
I currently live in Longview, Washington. I was
born and raised in Davenport, Iowa. As a youth, I
attended Trinity Episcopal Church in Davenport. I
left the Episcopal Church as a teenager and pursued
my spiritual formation through non-denominational
churches. After completing my college and seminary education, I was ordained in a nondenominational Community Church. I served in the
U. S. Navy as a chaplain for 20 + years until my retirement from active duty in 2002. Upon my retirement from the military, I pursued ministry in the
clinical setting as a hospital chaplain.
I moved to Longview, Washington in March 2008
after accepting a chaplain position at St. John Medi-

cal Center. I serve as a chaplain in the Intensive Care
Unit. I am also a member of the hospital’s Ethics
Committee and the in-patient Palliative Care Team.
I am blessed in my calling to serve God and my
neighbor through the ministry as a chaplain.
I had been sensing a desire to reconnect with my
Anglican roots for many years. Shortly after moving
to Longview, I began worshiping at St. Stephen’s
Episcopal Church. Over the past three years I have
been in a discernment process regarding ordination
to priest within the Episcopal Church. In January
2013 I became a postulant for Holy Orders. As part
of the continued process of discernment and learning, I will be involved with St. Luke ~ San Lucas for
a period of time.
My wife, Kathy, and I have two adult children –
Joshua (27) and Nicole (24). I am inspired by the
beauty of God’s diverse creation here in the Northwest. I enjoy hiking, camping, scuba diving, and
reading. I am refreshed and re-energized by the
worship and liturgy of the Episcopal Church.
I look forward to being a part of the worship and
faith community here at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. During my time with you, it is my hope and prayer that
I will be mentored by the women, men and children
who see St. Luke ~ San Lucas as their faith community and spiritual home.

Spiritual Development
CHILDREN'S MINISTRY
We have been learning about Lent as a time to prepare for Easter. We have been hearing stories of
Christ's journey to the cross and resurrection. Although each lesson
stands on its own, ideal learning
takes place by coming as many Sundays as possible.
We had a very enjoyable Family
Night last month. If any one would
like to host a Family Night, that would be great, just
send the information to the office to include in the
newsletter or Sunday announcements. Just eating,
playing and visiting
together are all we need to do, nothing fancy
needed. Maybe some of you have other ideas for
get-togethers in public places?
Vacation Bible School: July 22 - 25 9am to 12pm.
I hope you will mark these dates on your calendars
for four days of fun and learning. There will be
lively music, dramatized stories, games, food, creative art and more. Friends and neighbors welcome.
We will need volunteers to help us so please let me
know if you are interested.

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM
The month of April rings out with
“This Joyful Eastertide.” See the Hymnal #192 for the inspiring text. “Away
with sin and sorrow!” We get to sing
alleluias again, so expect a bundle of
them between now and Pentecost.
Trumpeter, Paul Mazzio, will be our
special guest for Jazz Vespers on Saturday, the 6th
of April. The service begins at 6 PM but the music
starts five to ten minutes beforehand. Mazzio is a
premiere jazz artist and teacher from Portland. His
performance degrees are from the University of
North Texas and USC. He has toured internationally with the Woody Herman Orchestra and performed with luminaries such as Tony Bennett and
Moody Blues. Currently he plays with the Alan
Jones Sextet, the Portland Jazz Orchestra, Nushooz
and the Swingline Cubs. He may bring his flugelhorn along. Our “house band,” which includes
drummer Don Lawry, will also feature soprano,
Avis Horjus, new to the St. Luke’s parish. Avis has
sung several solos with our choir and will spell our
regular cantor Karyn Slanina, off for a few
months. Bring your neighbors, friends, and family
THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO

as we swing into Spring with an ecumenical
“seeker” service of prayer and song.
Congratulations to our own “house oboist,”
Hannah Femling. Hannah recently presented her
junior solo oboe recital at St. Olaf College on February 24. In the completely objective evaluation by
her parents Beth and Herb, who were in attendance
in the cold of northern Minnesota, the recital was a
smashing success. Having heard Hannah play often here at her “house congregation,” we know it
was excellent. Hannah presented the music of
Saint-Saens, Cimarosa, Paladilhe and Hindemith. Her recital program is posted on the bulletin board downstairs near the choir room. Congratulations, Hannah! (Beth has pictures.)
“This Joyful Eastertide” ends with this apt refrain:
“Had Christ, that once was slain, ne’er burst his
three-day prison, our faith had been in vain. But
now is Christ arisen!” Everybody now:
Alleluia!

Evangelism can be scary especially to Episcopalians. Nothing that we will do is the least bit scary.
Our objective is simply to assist in welcoming and
strengthening the way we invite, greet and follow

supportive. Please check out the web site at http://

resources available.

50 YEARS OF ANTIQUE SHOWS AT
ST. LUKE’S
St. Luke’s Parish Hall was the site for an annual
Antiques Show and Sale sponsored by the ladies of
the parish. The first show was held on November 9,
10, 11, 1948. Vancouver Mayor, Vern Anderson,
opened the show using a historical key from the
Hudson’s Bay Company all bedecked with ribbons
for the occasion. He proclaimed the first annual
antiques show and sale ever held in Vancouver to
be officially open.
Garbed in elaborate old-time costumes, members of
the Women’s Council acted as hostesses, greeting
visitors and directed them to the many displays and
exhibitions on sale throughout the building. General admission was one dollar, $1.50 for three days.
A cafeteria was opened for the convenience of the
dealers and visitors. (The next year luncheon and
supper was served with light lunches and coffee
available to the dealers.) Almost every advertisement emphasized that only authentic antiques
would be shown. There were 22 dealers, 1,000 visitors in attendance and proceeds of $1,400, undoubtedly the largest sum of money ever to be raised in
any singular project sponsored by the women of St.
Luke’s. The purpose of the first show was to earn
money for the proposed youth camp near Mt.
Hood.
In the early days of the show there were special exhibits such as crosses from the 14th and 16th centu-

ries, artifacts excavated from the Fort, old and rare
bibles and old weapons.
Proceeds from the show were used for a number of
different purposes – renovation of the kitchen,
nursing scholarships to Clark College and the usual
outreach activities. The show continued for 50 years
ending in 1998 and was a much awaited and attended activity in Vancouver.

VESTRY SUMMARY – March 2013
HISTORIC JOURNAL: An 1873-1875 journal is in our
vault. It has no entries specific to St. Luke’s. It may have
been written by our second rector, The Rev. Albert
Nicholson, who also edited the Oregon Churchman newspaper. The Vestry approved offering that journal to the
Diocese of Oregon, of which St. Luke’s was a member at
the time. In exchange, we will request originals or copies
of any data they have regarding our parish.
FISCAL BASICS: Parish Treasurer Doug Goodlett reviewed his monthly reports, which include an analysis of
revenues and expenses, a listing of activities in our reserve accounts, and a general summary.
PAROCHIAL REPORT: Our 2012 Parochial Report has
been approved by the Vestry, signed by appropriate staff
and clergy, and sent to the diocese.
CONFIRMATION: When Bishop Rickel visits on Sunday, May 5, three Anglo and three Hispanic persons will
be confirmed.
THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO
BUILDINGS & GROUNDS: Replacing the failed thermostat on our large refrigerator cost $216. It was money
well spent: replacing the fridge would have cost $4,800.
The window on one outer narthex door has been expanded. Now, our members with mobility devices can
stay inside in bad weather and more readily see when C
–VAN arrives to pick them up.
A large sign identifying us as St. Luke’s will be installed
on the east side of the kitchen, visible from the corner of
27th and F Streets.
FUNDRAISING: On February 12, our Mardi Gras celebration was so popular that we ran out of food!
On St. Patrick’s Day, Outreach will sell “Irish Sundaes” (baked potatoes) for $5.00 at Coffee Hour. Proceeds will go to Vancouver’s HOPE program. It helps
homeless children in the district’s schools.
Come to the Burgerville at 4th Plain and Fort Vancouver
Way on April 11. The HOPE program will receive 10%
of that day’s proceeds. Father Jaime and our parish
youth will be busing tables from 5 pm to 8 pm.
PARISH GOALS: For 2013, our goals are:
Develop closer relationship between Anglo and
Hispanic members of the Parish.
Expand Outreach programs into the community and
beyond.
Promote the growth of the parish.
Provide opportunities to grow in faith in a safe
social environment.
All goals are being actively developed. More details
will follow as they are completed.
SUDDEN MOVE: Vestryperson June Clarke will be
moving to Savannah, GA soon. Her husband Nigel has
been transferred there. Keep them and their daughters
in your prayers as they make this unexpected adjustment. June’s wise counsel and good humor will be
missed.

Revenues: Actual revenues for February are
ahead of schedule due to pre-pledge contributions which inflate actual income. Net income
dropped from over $40,000 in January to
$21,323 in February. This is the bottom line
figure that reflects our financial health.
Expenses: Expenses are over where we would
expect to be at the end of February. Constant
monitoring of expenses will be required in
order to adequately fund our numerous and
vital ministries while balancing staffing, office
and building maintenance expenses.
Additional Comments:. Thank you for your early
pledge contributions. We are not borrowing from
savings to pay bills…something that has been true
at the beginning of previous years. This is excellent
news. We picked up one additional pledge in February bringing our total to 120 pledge units in the
amount of $281,092 which is close to our annual
pledge goal. Hopefully, new pledges and attention
to expenditures will allow us to end the year in
good standing. Thanks for your continued financial
support of St. Luke’s/San Lucas.

St. Luke’s – San Lucas is a bilingual Episcopal Church serving Vancouver and Southwest Washington since 1853.
Our vision is to answer God’s call to be an Anglo-Hispanic faith community that works together to share the love of
Christ. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, our mission is to extend hospitality to all, to respond to human need
through service, and to grow in faith together.
