LUKE’S – SAN LUCAS VISIONING PROJECT This fall the parish will begin a process to develop new vision and mission statements along with goals and a strategic plan to implement the vision. The first part of this process will involve gathering feedback from as many groups and individuals in the congregation as possible including the parish meeting on September 30. The Strategic Planning section of the website lists dates for the various group meetings. http://www.stlukesvancouver.com/news-andevents/strategic-planning/ The information from these conversations will identify the gifts, core values and aspirations of the congregation. The Vestry will then use this information as the basis for the development of the vision and mission statements that will be presented at the parish annual meeting in January 2013. This is a process of prayerful discernment in response to the question: What is God calling St. Luke’s-San Lucas to be and to do? In preparation for these meetings, begin thinking about what you value most about being a member of this congregation. What do you think is most important for the growth of the mission and ministry of the parish? As the consultant for this process, I am looking forward to working with all of you over the next few months as we plan for the future of the parish. STRATEGIC PLANNING FEEDBACK MEETING DATES: Paula Franck will be meeting with the following groups on the dates indicated: August 30: September 4: September 8: September 11: September 12: September 18 September 25: September 29: September 30: 10:00 AM Thursday Crew 6:30 PM Outreach Committee 10:00 AM Women’s Spirituality Group 3:30 PM Sunday School Teachers and Parents 6:00 PM Youth Group 12:00 PM The Lunch Bunch 6:00 PM Vestry, EARLY START 2:00 PM Staff Meeting 7:00 PM Adult Choir and HandBell Choir 6:30 PM Evangelism Committee 6:30 PM Pastoral Care Group 10:00 AM Ministries Leadership Forum 11:30 AM ALL PARISH MEETING Any Ministry’s not yet scheduled to meet with Paula Franck, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Jaime Case Paula Franck Reminder - If your Ministry group would like to submit an article for the October Messenger, please submit your written article on or before September 16 to the church office or email it to (office@stlukesvancouver.com) Thank you! THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO RECTOR’S CORNER This Year’s Pledge Campaign In the fall every year the Church begins a campaign to raise support for its ministries. September is when we start talking about our pledges, the promises we make to give, on a weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly basis, to the misio Dei, the mission of God. The Church at its best serves God’s mission. Other good and worthy activities also serve God: Education, charity, medical care, environmental groups, justice groups, arts groups. All sorts of groups band together to pursue, intentionally or accidentally, the goals of a wholesome, human and joyful world. I hope that looking around at the activities of such groups brings you a sense of optimism and confidence, that “all will be well, and all manner of thing will be well.” For St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas, the challenges are many. In 2013 the Outreach budget becomes a line item in the main budget of the church: That conveys to all members the concept that Outreach at the Church is the work and giving of every member. St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas cannot be a rival to the American Cancer Society, or the March of Dimes, or even Episcopal Relief and Development, and indeed it should not seek such rivalry. Our task as the Church is to support and collaborate with the good being done around us by anyone who is doing it. It is our calling as followers of the Servant God. Since the fall of 2011, your Vestry and I have noted the discrepancy between the income and the expense of our programs. By moving latent and unrestricted funds into the budget of the Church, we recognized a myriad of small, fragmented restricted funds as income and that gave us a buffer for 2012. Now 2013 is upon us. The difference between our income and our expense is over $40,000 and probably will grow more before the end of the year. The 3 only place where we have the ability to control costs of that magnitude is in personnel. Mother Vickie Dogaru and I have been talking about this for over a year. Now, without some miraculous change in our income, Mother Vickie knows that the position of Associate Rector is very likely to be cut out of personnel. I want you to know that I worked to showcase the ministries Mother Vickie does and to emphasize the need for more income without resorting to the 13th Month or some other plea. In the mean time other costs continue to rise, so the budget squeeze is upon us. The ministry that Mother Vickie does will have to be taken over by lay volunteers or by me as your Rector. Some things may have to be left undone. Our priorities will guide us. St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas managed to avoid facing a budget challenge for years. Last year generous giving from some members allowed us to end in the black and carry over a reserve into 2012. However, we have been able to avoid the kind of draconian cuts or huge deficits that we have seen elsewhere in our society since 2008. Now we have to decide where we are going, what our priorities are and where our resources lie. In September the process that leads to a Strategic Plan is underway [see article on page 2]. Now the time of reckoning is upon us. Mother Vickie is talking to Canon Joan Anthony about other employment. We are looking over the ministries she leads. We remain open to the stirrings and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Please join me in this prayer: Almighty God, whose loving hand gives us all that we possess: Grant us grace that we may honor you with our substance, and, remembering the account which we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Fr. Nuestras prioridades no guiarán. I almost didn’t buy it, but it was the last one on the shelf. Truth is I felt sorry for it. I am always rescuing things: my cat, a goldfish someone didn’t want, a spider that belongs outside my house not in it, a garden snake tormented by the cat, etc. So this little squash fit right in. I didn’t hold much hope with all the rainy cool weather, but I kept its feet warm and waited. And waited. Then I got busy with other things and sort of left it on its own in one corner of the garden. Now it is 8 feet across, 3 feet high, full of large yellow blooms with the swelling promise of squash just behind. Maybe 50 or 60 or more of them. The leaves are over a foot across and shade the depths of the plant, making a green cathedral to gestate a golden treasure. There are so many occasions when things seem hopeless, beyond help, and easy to just give up on. But we never know what a little nurture might do. God is in the world in so many ways, and when we add our loving kindness to that presence anything is possible. I thought about the fortunes of rain and sun that after all were just right. I gave thanks and in my minds eye came the vision of the dry fields of the Midwest. Many farmers in this nation are suffering through terrible drought, watching crops fail and animals that must be sold for lack of food and water. Take a moment to offer this prayer, a pouring out of your loving kindness and compassion. Ask for the Lord’s help for those who care for the land. Almighty God, Lord of heaven and earth: We humbly pray that your gracious providence be with those who work the land. Uphold them in times of trouble, and give them your shelter. The harvest of the land is at risk, and the farmers, dairymen, and ranchers also as they struggle to provide for their families and ours. Be with them, heal the land, and heal their hearts. Remembering the fragile balance of the world we live in, keep us always grateful for the bounty it provides, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Peace, Mother Vickie Spiritual Development CHILDREN’S WEEK “GALILEE VACATION” Thank you to everyone who donated item's or helped during the week. We had twenty-nine children attend overall. The atmosphere was one of calm, engaged, contentment with laughter and fun mixed in. Each day started with music, followed by a dramatized story and often the snack was a continuation of the story. One day we shared loaves and fishes together and another we had breakfast on the beach with Jesus, complete with lite-up fire. Games outside were a lot of fun and there were special activities such as "walking on water", jump house, face painting by a clown, and a treasure hunt following the early Christian fish sign. A wide variety of projects continued the story theme and each day the children would find something special in their backpacks to remind them about the day. A big hit was acting out or playing the stories with the props provided. The real boat was always busy with fishing, storms and jumping out to walk on water, like Peter. The day ended with singing and a brief discussion with Mother Vickie. Thank you, thank you to all who helped. Ebie Mountford. THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO SUNDAY SCHOOL During the summer the children enjoyed listening to our Bible story books ,doing related projects, visiting the Peace Garden and enjoying friendships. They are getting very excited about the grapes. They asked if they could taste them so we tried one each and now they understand why we wait . Sour! We will kick off the new school year with an ice cream social on Saturday, September 8th at 3:30 PM. Anyone interested in hearing about Godly Play is welcome. Even if you do not want to volunteer or do not have children you may be interested to find out what we are doing. Tell friends and neighbors. Starting September 9 we resume Godly Play. Sunday school will start at 9.45 AM. and children come into church at the time of The Peace. We could use a few more helpers, if anyone is interested. You would not need to teach the lesson (unless you want to). We need an extra adult each Sunday to help with the projects, take kids to wash hands, read, talk about the story as they play with materials and help keep our children safe. Thank you so much to our dedicated teachers and helpers: Patty Hale, Sue Henry, Cheryl-Lee Holt, Lee Wilson, Peggy Sue Snoey and Becky Swisher. 7 NEW SUNDAY CLASSES FOR YOUTH AGES 9-13 “This Bread, This Cup: Episcopal Communion” Starts Sunday September 16, 11:30 in the Children’s Ministry Office/classroom No session on September 30 Teachers: Jim and Jill Boyd This class is after church during coffee hour. THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO 10 Worship NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM “My heart abounds with pleasure in this fair summertime when God, with fullest measure, renews the world benign. All earth and all the heavens doth God with life imbue; all creatures, high and lowly, grow beautiful and true.” These are the words of the choir anthem on Labor Day weekend, which Johann Walther penned in 1552 and set to a medieval German melody. The sentiment is certainly a current feeling that comes around every year at about this time: the end of a fair and restful summertime and the need to “go, labor on,” the first line of our closing hymn for Labor Day. The music program at St. Luke’s – San Lucas gets underway again with our second annual “Fun-inthe-Gorge” day on Saturday, September 8th. New singers and ringers are always welcome to join us for a day of fun and games in and around a little cabin-in-the-woods north of Carson, WA. (Speak with me for encouragement. More details are on the way.) The choir sings officially for the first time on the Sunday, September 9th with a rehearsal at 9:15 AM. Wednesday rehearsals begin in earnest on September 12th. On this first Wednesday, Paula Franck, our Visioning Consultant, will be meeting with both choirs, singers and ringers, from 7:00 – 7:30PM. The rehearsal times will be a adjusted to accommodate this special opportunity, Bells Choir at 6:00 PM and vocal Choir at 7:30PM. We look forward to this time of institutional soul-searching and the opportunity to “grow beautiful and true.” We will resume our regular rehearsal schedule starting Wednesday, September 19 with bells meeting at 6:30 PM and the vocal choir at 7:30 PM. Everyone is welcome to join in either choir; we meet downstairs in the cool of the Music Room. Tim Nickel, Music Director TAIZÉ The Rock Time has the power to heal all wounds, But the power of forgiveness is beyond time; Moving the rock that is in your heart, The spirit of light will raise you up. The answers are found already in your heart, And you have the power to move that rock; By changing yourself, others will change, Peace on earth will not be contained. Winter long gone, the spring has arrived, Awakened land is near at hand; Life has profound purpose, Just yield and enjoy the journey. Hearts are connected when hands touch hands, Boundaries were set by lower mind; Free the mind and soul becomes itself, You are touched by endless time. - Xiao Fang Zhou The Taizé service combines readings, like the poem above from last month’s service, chant-like songs, silence, soft light and a unique chancel display in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Our September theme is “Water”. Come and enjoy this unique service. Saturday, September 15 at 6:00 PM. JAZZ VESPERS The next service of Jazz Vespers will be on Saturday, October 6th at 6:00 PM. Be sure to save the date! Once again, we will do a 45-minute Jazz Vespers service in the church. The service is not designed as a jazz concert. The people in the pew will have ample chance to sing and participate in the service, traditionally an evening meditation on the psalms. Out Into The World OUTREACH COMMITTEE The Outreach Committee will continue meeting towards a reorganization of the committee’s mandate and agenda every first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM, most likely in the Children’s Chapel. Jaime Case 11 ALS WALK - SEPTEMBER 22, 2012 Dear Friends, This is our fourth year in "Walking to Defeat ALS". As always we will be walking in loving memory of Father Eric Werts. This 5K walk helps raise funds for research, support of families, awareness and most importantly finding a cure. On the day of our walk last year, we had over 60 family and friends walking and supporting us. It was an amazing and inspiring day. This is a horrible disease that strikes someone with ALS every 90 minutes and every 90 minutes someone loses their battle with ALS. The average life span from diagnosis is 2 - 5 years. Father Eric survived 3 years, 2 months and 10 days. The ALS Association was so good to us and helped to make Eric's journey so much easier for him. I hope that you will consider supporting our walk team "FOR THE LOVE OF ERIC" again this year with a donation as we WALK T0 DEFEAT ALS. We would like to ask you to form your own teams or groups of family, friends, co-workers, neighbors and groups you belong and solicit donations to help us fight ALS. We so appreciate the people that did this last year as they were very successful. If you need any help, please let me know. You may make an on-line donation via our website: http://web.alsa.org/goto/FortheLoveofEric or you may send me a check made out to the ALS Association. We would love to have you join us for the walk on September 22nd. If you can join us, please let me know. (If you walked last year and still have your red bandanna, please wear it again as it is a symbol that you are a part of "FOR THE LOVE OF ERIC" team.) If you or anyone else would like more information about ALS go to www.alsa.org. Thank you so very much. Ruth Werts, 813 NW 151st Street Vancouver, WA 98685 360-718-8232 THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO 12 Community Life THE LUNCH BUNCH Our next lunch together is Tuesday, September 11 starting at 12 Noon. FIRST U.S. CITIZEN BORN IN VANCOUVER On December 20, 1853, a baby girl was born in one of the original log cabins of Fort Vancouver. While this was not the first baby born in Vancouver, it was the first born in Vancouver within the new United States Territory of Washington. The baby was born to John M. Eddings and Sarah Eddings. John had arrived in 1852 with Ullyses S. Grant and Louis Sohns, among others of the newly posted 14th Calvary Regiment of the U.S. Army. Later John was to become the Storekeeper of the Fort, as well as the Postmaster of Vancouver, a civic leader, and a parish leader of St. Luke’s. The Diary of Reverend John D. McCarty (the original of which is in the St. Luke’s Archive Vault) states that on January 1, 1854, Josephine Eddings was baptized by Rev. McCarty, later to be the first rector of St. Luke’s. One story has it that Josephine’s name was the result of a ‘vote’ by the officers of the Fort. They had been following the events of Napoleon’s career, and wanted the new baby to be named after the French General’s wife. This may be confusing though, as Napoleon I, who was married to Josephine, died in 1821, and it was Napoleon III, his nephew, that was ‘in the news’ in 1853-1854. But the story remains popular with local historians anyway. You can find a marker on Officer’s Row, in front of the Community Foundation building at the west end (look for a horizontal plaque adjacent to the sidewalk), that memorializes this significant birth in the history of Vancouver. This event of course has ties to St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas, with the Eddings family being active members of St. Luke’s, and Reverend McCarty being our first rector. Nave and chapel furnaces have been replaced. A new boiler should be installed by the time you read this. Asbestos abatement was scheduled to start no later than August 20. The whole project had a cost overrun of approximately $3,800. Donations to cover that amount would be extremely helpful. Many thanks to Bob Hiltz and John Mathieu for their above-and-beyond the call of duty service in getting these two complex tasks accomplished. 13 STRATEGIC PLANNING: Paula Franck, of the Diocese of Oregon, will help the Vestry developing a new parish vision. Our current Mission Statement has not been updated in many years. WE are not the same church we were in the early 1990s. We need to list such things as what we do well, what our core values are, and what our dreams are for the parish. The process will involve as many parishioners as possible. Most sessions will be in small groups, but will include our All Parish Meeting. CONVENTION DELEGATES: Two men and two women can represent this parish at diocesan convention (November 9-10 at the SeaTac Hilton). Unfortunate circumstances have caused our original four delegates to step down. Thankfully, the Vestry has approved four new delegates who volunteered when were asked, Jim and Kathy Gallaher and Kelly and Dena Cassidy. We have one alternate, Tatiana Sullivan. ASSOCIATE RECTOR’S REPORT: The Evangelism Committee is reviewing new census information and also our Newcomer’s Brochure to ensure that we welcome all segments of the larger community. “Galilee Vacation” had 25 enthusiastic young participants per day. Planning for 2013 will start soon. Godly Play has a new teacher, Patty Hale. The teaching staff plans to offer that curriculum in both English and Spanish. With the summer slump, fewer nursery attendants will be scheduled. Women’s Spirituality will meet with Paula Franck in September. The Episcopal Church’s policies regarding Native Americans is under review. JUNIOR WARDEN’S REPORT: The Children’s Chapel is now set up as a regional Telecommunications Center for the diocese. It will be locked when not in use. Thursday Crew tasks recently have included restriping the parking lot, reserving spaces for handicapped persons and families with small children, and remodeling the Gospel stand. (continued on next page) THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO 14 HAIL AND FAREWELL: Kira Greene retired from the Vestry in August. She will work for Americorps in the Federal Way school district. We thank her for her work for the parish, wish her Godspeed in her new venture, and hope to see her in church at least occasionally. TREASURER’S REPORT GIFT POLICY: A The Vestry unanimously approved a policy regarding all forms of gifts to the parish. Summary as of July 31, 2012 Total Budget Year to Date for the Year Actual Amounts Revenues $426,205 $344,201 Expenses $426,205 $270,708 Net Income 0 $73,493 VESTRY ELECTIONS: Yoon Cho, Don Lawry, and Russ Roseberry will end their three-year Vestry terms in January. If you are led to serve the parish for a three-year term, please contact one of them, or any Vestry member. Elections will be at the Annual Parish Meeting in January. COAL TRAIN: The Hough neighborhood is concerned about the long-term health effects of railroad trains carrying coal through West Vancouver. Coal dust from uncovered freight cars can travel up to a mile and cause respiratory problems. The Vestry is considering whether to draft a letter of concern. SUPPLY CLERGY: The Vestry unanimously approved a resolution to pay supply clergy either a stipend or a housing allowance, at the clergyperson’s choice. BUDGET SUMMARY “Dollars and Sense” Percentages should to be at 58.3% of budgeted revenue and expense. Percent of Total Budget 70% 55% Revenues: Actual revenues as of July are ahead of what would be expected, largely due to a onetime infusion of funds from former restricted accounts; and capital project funds received from the unrestricted Diocesan Investment Fund. Expenses: Overall expenses are under YTD budget projections by $4,581, due mostly to facility maintenance costs. Sun, Sept 30: All Parish Meeting, St. Francis Blessing of Animals Additional Comments: Shelly Briggs, audit chair and parishioners Chess Getsinger (Treasurer Emeritus), Barbara Jagelski, and Pam Goodlett formed the 2011 audit committee. The church received high marks for management of funds while making suggestions for improvement. Please continue to fulfill your pledge commitments during the summer months. In July our expenses were greater than our income! Thanks for your continued financial support of St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. Blessings to you all for some summer sun and fun! THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO THINGS HAPPEN THAT WE DO NOT SEE There have been several summer projects that most of us will not see but will have significant results and needed to be done. Your Vestry made the decision to use funds from the Diocesan Investment Fund (DIF) to re-roof the parish hall, repair the roof between the parish hall and the sanctuary, repair the roof of the education wing, replace the sanctuary furnaces and make significant changes to the heating system of the education wing which included replacing the boiler and installing zone valves. Thank you to Bob Hiltz and John Mathieu who took the lead on these projects. Now we can stay warm and dry in the winter and during the summer, cooler in the sanctuary with the ability to draw in the cooler night air. You will not see the changes unless you ask for a tour. If you read the Messenger, the Sunday bulletin, and look around the church you will notice that there are several of our vital ministries that would fall into the category of they happen but most do not see the results. Most of us do not notice that the altar guild does the wonderful work to prepare the altar for each service. There is a bread guild that makes bread for communion. We do not see the work of the Pastoral Care committee but it is important to those who need their help. The children have their Sunday class because of the ministry of all the teachers, important work that most of us do not see but it is there. Toilets flush and sinks run water and drain because of unseen workers who make sure that they are in good repair. Ministries happen all around us at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. They happen because we have employees and volunteers that are ready and willing to step up and make things happen. As all of us journey into fall we will participate in a process of planning with Paula Franck, who will put together a strategic plan for our next 5 years or so. The congregation of St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas will also begin to participate in the annual pledge drive that will fund all of our ministries during 2013. Your Vestry and soon all of 15 us will have to look at a very large budget short fall and probable reduction in employees if our pledges do not meet our projected expenses. Please begin to think and pray about your pledge for 2013. Without your pledge we may see that absence of ministries and then lack of services. Remember our food pantry needs food to hand out to those in need. Just a few cans a week will do a lot to help. Thank you to the Gallahers and the Cassidys for being our delegates to the diocesan convention in the fall. Russ Roseberry, Senior Warden OFFICE ANGELS TO THE RESCUE! Many thanks to all of the brave volunteers who helped out in the office during my vacation. Because of you I could relax and enjoy my time away. Thanks goes out to: Jennifer Cole, Joan Wilson, Hannah and Beth Femling, Jim and Jill Boyd, Harry Gamble, Kreta Saathoff, Jamie Mathieu, Kathleen Brown, Den Mark Wichar, Barbara Jagelski and Sandy Geer. Kris Lawless, Parish Administrator HEAVY METAL You can donate all kinds of metal from small cans of screws and nails to large car body parts, tire rims, washers and dryers, old wheelbarrows, dish washers and saw blades. If you have small metal items, please bring them to church and leave them in the box labeled, "METAL" on the stage. Russ will take these for recycling and the proceeds will go to the church. For larger items, you can schedule a pickup in the Clark County Area, just contact Russ Roseberry. RECYCLE INK CARTRIDGES Are you ready to rid yourself of those pesky ink cartridges, while sustaining St. Luke's commitment to being green, acting as a good steward of our land and oceans, and earning a few extra $$$ for the church? Simply drop the cartridges into the "Cartridge World" box located in the Parish Hall. Thanks! Sandy Geer THE MESSENGER ·· EL MENSAJERO 16 Facility Maintenance WARM AND DRY While you have been enjoying our brief warm and dry summer, several projects have been taking place at St. Luke’s to assure you will be warm and dry when winter weather returns. The first project we tackled in early August was the replacement of the roofs over the parish hall, apartment and the connecting structure to the sanctuary. You’ve probably noticed the water stained walls and the damaged ceiling in the hallway and wondered why a garbage can was below the light fixture that had no plastic lens. That leaky roof has been repaired and should remain water tight for many years to come. We also repaired some leaky spots elsewhere and bought a few years time on the kitchen and education wing roofs which are also showing their age. The second project we completed in August was the replacement of the two furnaces that heat the sanctuary. On more than one recent occasion we’ve had a surprise when there was no heat or only partial heat when we arrived on a cold winter Sunday morning. The replacement furnaces are high efficiency which will mean significant savings in our heating costs. As an added bonus, the new system is configured to draw in cool nighttime air so the sanctuary can remain much more comfortable during the hot summer days. Our final project which is nearing completion is the replacement of the boiler that heats the education wing, library, choir room and basement. Again, a high efficiency unit was chosen to help decrease our heating costs. We are also replacing the kitchen/ laundry room electric water heater that was installed in 1957 and tying it into the high efficiency boiler for added savings. During the boiler project we discovered several abandoned pipes that were insulated with asbestos. While we knew it would strain our budget, we decided we had to be the best stewards for our facility, members and guests and had the asbestos removed completely. All these projects were intended as necessary investments in the facility and as preparation for the planned narthex expansion and ADA modifications between the sanctuary and parish hall. Funding came from a withdrawal from the Diocesan Investment Fund (DIF) as presented in the Quarterly All Parish Meeting in May. We anticipated finding some surprises as the old roof was being removed but we didn’t anticipate the extent of asbestos abatement we’d need. When the work is completed in September and the bills paid, we expect we’ll overspend our DIF withdrawal by $2,000 to $4,000. If you want to beat the rush to contribute to cover this overrun, before we make a special appeal (so our already strained operating budget isn’t strained further) mark your contribution “Asbestos Free” and drop it in the plate or send it to the church office. Any funds collected beyond what is needed for this overrun will be held for the ADA capitol campaign. John Mathieu Around the Diocese ANNUAL DIOCESAN CONVENTION The 2012 Convention is scheduled for FridaySaturday, November 9-10, 2012, at the Hilton Seattle Airport & Conference Center, SeaTac. Check out the resolutions that will be presented at www.ecww.org. Our Delegates to convention are: Jim and Kathy Gallaher and Kelly and Dena Cassidy. We have one alternate, Tatiana Sullivan.
