Summer Holidays are here!!
The staff of Holy Trinity High wishes our students a safe and fun filled summer holiday. We hope that your
hard work and commitment to your academics have paid off with a rewarding report card. Have a great
summer!
Unreturned Textbooks and Locks
Students who have received outstanding book or lock bills should return books/ locks or pay the
replacement cost on Friday, June 24 at the main office. Textbooks for 2016-2017 will not be issued for
students with outstanding books.
Supplementary Exams (Public Exam courses)
Students who need to write a public exam supplementary may find the August Supplementary Exam
schedule online.
Supplementary Exams (Non-Public Exam Courses)
Supplementary exams for non-public exam courses will take place at the school on Monday, September
13 for Science and Social Studies; Tuesday, September 14 for Math; Wednesday, September 15 for
English. Students are to register at the school office on or before Friday, September 19. A fee of $35
must accompany the registration form.
Public Exam Results
Official transcripts will be issued to high school students in July and will provide students with basic
information concerning Supplementary Exams for Public Exam Courses. Registration for the August 2016
Supplementary Public Exams must be completed through the Department of Education and the
registration form can be accessed through our website.
Summer School
Registration for Summer School 2015 will take place on Tuesday June 28th, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at
Leary’s Brook Junior High. Classes are tentatively scheduled to begin on Thursday June 30 and will run
daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Classes finish on Wednesday July 27. There will be a 15 minute recess
break each day. No holidays will be observed. The registration fee is $185.00 per course. Registration
fees must be paid on Registration Day. No personal cheques will be accepted. Payment can be made by
Cash, Visa, MasterCard or Debit. Summer school registration forms went home with report cards to
recommended students.
Math Dept. News:
In October three of our grade 12 students wrote the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge. Noah
Griffiths achieved Bronze level for Newfoundland and Labrador and Evan Penney was added to the
Honour Role for the province. In February 90 of our grade 9, 10 and 11 students wrote the University of
Waterloo Math contests. In grade 9 Lauren White placed first in the school and Lauren White and Garnet
Edinger scored in the top 25% of students in Canada. In grade 10 Olivia Nesbitt placed first in the school
and in grade 11 Brandon Shea placed first in the school. In February five of our grade 12 students wrote
The Blundon Contest sponsored by Memorial University. Noah Griffiths placed first in this contest. In
May 60 of our grade 7 and 8 students wrote the Gauss Mathematics contests from the University of
Waterloo. In grade 7Jacob Moores placed first and in grade 8 Liam Penton placed first. In May Noah
Griffiths and Brandon Shea were invited to Memorial University to participate in the annual Blundon
Seminar.

Students also participated in the various Math League Competitions in both junior high and senior high
this year sponsored by the English School District. During pi week, the junior high students participated
in various math activities during their math classes.
Parents are reminded when purchasing school supplies for September that all Senior High Math students
must have a scientific calculator. Students in Academic or Advanced Math should have a graphing
calculator which will be used for all their math courses throughout high school. Check the Back to School
Flyers in August for discounted prices. When purchasing a graphing calculator please purchase the
TI-83Plus or TI-84Plus models. All students in Grade 7-9 will also need a calculator. A 4 function
calculator with
or a scientific calculator will be sufficient for junior high.
Math Scholarship Score 3203
Students who write Mathematics 3200 will automatically have a Math Scholarship Score 3203 placed on
their transcripts. This ensures that the overall provincial scholarship score calculated from Mathematics
3200 and Mathematics 3201 is consistent for both courses. The student’s Math Scholarship Score 3203
is based on a scale derived from the 3200 students’ examination result. It has no credit value and it will
be used in the calculation of the overall provincial scholarship score for graduating students. The higher
of the two grades reflected on a student’s transcript for Mathematics Scholarship Score 3203 or
Mathematics 3200 will also be used by Memorial University to satisfy the grade 12 Mathematics subject
area requirement and calculate the student’s entrance average.
HTH Art Spot
Holy Trinity High’s Art Evening, Blending Expressions through Music and Art was held on April 21st. This
event showcased the talented junior and senior high art classes and the incredible work they’ve created
throughout the year. Students completed projects in the areas of drawing, printmaking, painting, sculpture
and cinematography and many creative projects were displayed. As well, The Holy Trinity High choir
along with many individual performers put off a spectacular musical show. Their beautiful voices had the
audience’s captivated.
Art teacher Ms. Karen Channing and choir director Carla McGrath were impressed and overwhelmed with
the display of student talent and received many positive comments from parents and the community
congratulating their students. They’d like to thank all who helped out and attended this event, especially
Mr. Collins and the HTH Sound Crew for all their technical support and Ms. Clements for capturing the
many moments with her photos and videos. It certainly was a night to remember.
Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is an exciting self-development program consisting of four sections
(service, skills, physical recreation and adventurous journey). Students enrolled as part of the Holy Trinity
High group have been busy this school year working on their bronze and silver award levels. Our school
is planning training and our practice/qualifying adventurous journey for September 2016. Current

Science Department
The 2015-2016 school year has been an exciting one for the science department at HTH! Our students
have had many opportunities throughout the year to participate in innovative science activities and further
develop their skills and interests.
Marine Institute Model Boat Race
Congratulations to students who participated in the 4th annual Model Boat Race at the Marine Institute on
November 14th, 2015. HTH had two teams participate in this year’s event: Team ‘Beam me up Scotty’ and
Team ‘Bouyz in the Hood’. Team ‘Beam me up Scotty’ won the award for most innovative design and
Team ‘Bouyz in the Hood’ came very close to winning for the fastest boat. Both teams worked very hard
on their boat designs and we are looking forward to boat-building again next year! A special thank you is
extended to parent mentors Mr. Keith Ledwell and Mr. Stephen Lomond; their dedication is much
appreciated.
Lego Robotics
The HTH Lego Robotics team performed well under pressure at the FLL Lego Robotics Competition on
November 28th, 2015. The team was successful in many of the challenges presented to them at the Skills
Canada- hosted competition and took home an award in the professionalism category. The Tigers will be
gearing up for the competition again next year!

Lab Extravaganza Day
Approximately forty senior high science students participated in Lab Extravaganza Day on February 22nd
at Memorial University. Students spent the day attending workshops in their chosen area and were able
to participate lab activities typically found in first year university science courses. This enrichment event
provided students with the opportunity to explore disciplines within science including biology and ocean
sciences, chemistry, computer science, pharmacy, engineering, and earth science.
PEGNL Model Bridge Building
The Model Bridge Competition is an opportunity for students in Grades 7-9 to develop critical-thinking
skills in designing and completing a small-scale engineering project. Tigers put their design skills to the
test on March 5th at the Johnson Geo Centre against other schools in the region and were also ranked
against competitors across the province. We are delighted that several students’ bridges ranked as some
of the best in the province! Congratulations are extended to Ryan Codner & Andrew Pearcey (1st),
Cameron Loveys (3rd), Zoe Park (6th), and Amber Redmond & Shelby Warren (8th) for Top 10 Maximum
Loads. Top 10 Overall Scores included bridges built by Ryan Codner & Andrew Pearcey (2nd), and Ryan
Casey & Logan Paul (5th).

HTH Junior High Science Fair
Junior high students put their experimental skills on display during an exhibit of science projects on March
15th. Many students were excited to view the projects during lunchtime and it was a great showcasing of
students’ scientific knowledge! The top three projects from each grade level were as follows:

Eastern NL Science and Technology Fair
Several students who had received awards at the school level took their experimental projects to the
regional science fair on April 22nd – 23rd. Participating students were able to build upon their science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM) knowledge through participating in tours at Memorial
University and CNA. HTH was well represented and several students received recognition for their work
including: Lauren White (Memorial University Department of Physics Award & Intermediate Physical
Science Silver Medal), Kassidy Hammond (Junior Life Science Bronze Medal), and
Rebecca Vicars (Memorial University Department of Biology Award & NL Institute of Agrologists Award)

HTH Aquaponics
Students involved in Agriculture to Aquaponics started to develop an understanding and awareness of the
interactions needed to produce food. Using this aquaponics-engineering project as a platform, over 70
students were trained and engaged in either programming/coding skills, engineering concepts,
aquaponics, gardening/farming, water testing or multimedia communication strategies. Many project
participants have started on a path to develop skills in all these areas. This fits with our Newfoundland
and Labrador English School District philosophy and Holy Trinity High’s focus on differentiated
educational practices that meet the diverse needs of our students.
Senior High Underwater Robotics
Members of the underwater robotics team competed in the MATE NL Regional ROV Competition on May
7th at the Marine Institute. This year, students’ work involved monitoring damaged coral and retrieving
coral specimens for analysis, as well as deploying, manipulating and practicing retrieving equipment from
the ocean floor.
Team ‘A.E.R.O.’ represented HTH well not only with their engineering skills, but also walked away with
the award for best team spirit! Way to go tigers! Many thanks are extended to parent mentors Colleen
Ledwell, Keith Ledwell, and Stephen Lomond, as well as former HTH team members Jared Lewis and
Neeson Mello.

Let’s Talk Science Challenge
Congratulations to all four teams who participated in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge event at Memorial
University on April 25th. This event is an exciting question and answer competition which helps students
build upon their science knowledge beyond the curriculum as well as promote critical thinking and
problem solving. HTH was proud to claim a top spot for the third consecutive year as members of Team
‘Solar Power’ finished in third place out of 30 teams. Congratulations, Tigers!
RISE Awards
Special congratulations to Alberta Hansen, Keisha Roche, and Mackenzie Furey for being selected as
three of the fifteen Newfoundland and Labrador high school students that will spend this summer at
research-related enrichment programs across North America and the Arctic through the Research
Inspired Student Enrichment (RISE) Awards. The awards range in value from $6,500 to $15,000 and are
presented to students who demonstrate academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and
mathematics. Alberta, Keisha, and Mackenzie will be attending the DaVinci Engineering Enrichment
Program (DEEP), a four-week program held at the University of Toronto, which offers pre-university
engineering and science enrichment and research project design opportunities. Outstanding work,

Summer Science Opportunities
Congratulations and best wishes to students who have been selected for the WISE (Women in Science
and Engineering) Student Summer Employment Program. These summer job placements are for Grade
11 students who have an interest in pursuing a career in the fields of science or engineering.
Congratulations and best wishes are also extended to students participating in MedQuest during the
summer. MedQuest is a week-long program for students in Grades 10-12 offered by Memorial
University’s Faculty of Medicine. The sessions introduce students to the world of health sciences through
seminars, lectures, a research project and tours of health facilities. We look forward to hearing about
your experiences in the fall!
French Dept News:
Study French in Quebec (grades 9 and 10)
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, through the Department of Education, offers bursaries
to students for summer French programs in Quebec. The bursary covers the cost of tuition, room and
board, plus various extra activities, for a 4-5 week program in Quebec. The program is for students in
grades 9- 10 (any level of French- beginner to advanced). This year we have had a record number of
students apply for these bursaries and we have nine grade 9 students who received bursaries.
Explore Bursary
Explore is a five-week intensive language-immersion program. Participants in Explore receive a $2,200
bursary (taxable income) that covers tuition fees for the programs, instructional materials, meals and
accommodations, workshops, and other mandatory activities. Students discover another region of
Canada while learning French. Holy Trinity High has eight level 1 and 2 students who have been
awarded Explore French bursaries to study in Quebec this summer.
CPF Speak-Off’s
Grade 9 French Immersion student Sarah Dunphy participated in the Canadian Parents for French Newfoundland and Labrador's Concours d'art oratoire 2016 on May 7th. Sarah won first place in her
division and is the Provincial Winner in Early French Immersion, Division A. Félicitations Sarah on this
wonderful accomplishment!
Heritage Fair
The Avalon Regional Heritage Fair theme this year was: "Service and Sacrifice: Shaping Our Culture Les services et sacrifices: façonnant notre culture". The Regional fair was held April 29th and 30th, 2016.

French/Art news
This past November students from Ms. Codner's Grade 7 French Immersion class had the opportunity to
submit artwork to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 for their Poster contest.
Congratulations to the following students: Emily Hynes - 1st Place-Color Poster, Hannah Frisby - 2nd
Place-Color Poster and Emma Cole - 1st Place-Black and White poster. All 3 students received a
monetary award for their winning poster.
Grade 7 Core French

What a fantastic job Mrs. Clarke’s Grade 7 class did this year with their final Tache Finale project in the
Unit Entrepreneurs en Herbes. Students created a plan for an original French Restaurant including the
name, logo, menu and pricing, layout and promotion. Their ideas were so creative and their visual
displays were just amazing. Then, to top it off, some students took it upon themselves to bring in some
yummy samples of products they would serve in their business. We certainly have some budding
entrepreneurs in our midst. Congratulations to all of the students for using their talents to create such
wonderful projects in French this year!
Social Studies Dept
Student Vote
On Thursday Oct 15, HTH participated in the Student Vote as part of the Federal Election. 91% of our
students participated by casting a ballot in their riding. Students’ interest was high as many teachers
spent the lead up time discussing politics and elections processes with the students. A core group of
senior high students acted as poll clerks where they took leadership roles in making sure our voting in the
LRC went smoothly. The results were Nick Whelan 41% of the student vote, Jack Harris 42% of the vote.
Was a very close race here at HTH. Because of the student vote, our students seemed much more
interested in politics and now understand the process of voting. Please encourage your children to vote
when they come of age. It’s an important right to exercise.

Remembrance Day Assemblies 2015
The Remembrance Day assemblies for both junior and senior high were held on Nov 10th, 2015. It went
very smoothly, involving cadets, legion members and school students and staff. The planning for this
event was elaborate, involving several teachers on the Remembrance Day committee. Mr. Connors was
emcee for the event; Mr. Ron Collins directed the band. Ms. Jeanette Blackwood organized the roll call
list of members of our communities who have served or are currently serving in the Canadian armed
forces. Thanks to all other teachers who participated in the organization or running of our assemblies.
The ceremony was very well received by all involved and present at the event.
Grade 8 Outings
From Oct 14-Oct 16 our grade 8’s went on field trips over 3 days. They visited many places including the
Colony of Avalon in Ferryland, the Confederation Building and House of Assembly. Groups also visited
the Bowring Park grounds where they tracked down and learned about various monuments and
memorials which are located in the Park. At the same time, groups visited The Rooms, where they
participated in several different educational sessions to research individuals and aspects of the historic
fishing industry.
Canadian Roots Tour 2015
In November, 2015, a group of 48 students and sic teachers participated in the third Canadian Roots Trip
from HTH. They spent two days in Quebec City, 2 in Montreal and finished off with two days in Ottawa
where they attended the Remembrance Day Ceremonies at the National War Memorial (and had a
chance to meet Prime Minister Trudeau while there as well !!). The tour visited multiple museums,
landmarks and historic sites, learning a vast amount during their 67kilometers of walking during those six
days… a great time was had by all participants!!
NEXT YEAR EXCITIMENT! Canadian Roots Tour 2016
The Canadian Roots Trip for the upcoming year will be our largest yet. A total of 88 soon-to-be Grade 9
students are registered with EF Tours to travel on November 10-15, taking part in the Remembrance Day
Ceremonies in Ottawa, then moving on to explore Montreal and Quebec City, looking into Canada's past
and the amazing aspects of our Canadian Culture (as fits their Social Studies Program in Grade 9 with a
focus on Canadian Identity). Filling two large motor coaches, the 11 teacher/chaperones are already
getting excited for this amazing, incredible learning opportunity for the travelers!!

Career Education Stuff a Stocking Campaign for Choice for Youth
Career students rose to the challenge again this year stuffing and bring in over 70 stockings for youth in
need to support Choices for Youth during their Christmas drive. Very generous teens!
Grade 8 Heritage Fair
Once again students did an excellent job with the Heritage Fair. Judges, parents and teachers all
commented on the quality of the projects. Winners of this year’s Heritage Fair are Kelsey Molloy First
place, Emily Samson Second Place, Josh Canning & Jacob Callahan Third Place. Honorable mentions
are Kayla Crichton, Sarah Hawkins & Amanda Pearcey, Logan Dunn and Timothy Barnes. A big thanks
goes out to the judges without whom this fair is not possible.

Regional Heritage Fair Winners
Our school represented itself exceptionally well as the regional fair in April. Emily Samson was awarded
$25 for a Second Language Award. Josh Canning was awarded $25 for a Visual Literacy Award. Kelsey
Molloy was awarded $50 for the Island Rooms Fishing Heritage Award for a project that explores an
aspect of a traditional family fishery of NL and an honourable mention award from the Regional Fair. She
has the opportunity to attend the Wooden Boat Heritage Conference with Fishing for Success Youth Dory
Rowing Club in October 2016 in Trinity Bay
Model United Nations 2016
In February, 31 students from Holy Trinity travelled to Memorial University to take part in MUN Squared
2016. Students discussed a number of issues from the world economic crisis to the 1949 Confederation
debate. Holy Trinity students were well prepared and did a great job in their debates. Congratulations to
Shane Layte, representing (France) for winning the Matthew Gillard award for top debater in the Nuclear
Proliferation discussion room and Miranda Norman (France) who was named top debater in the World
Health discussion room. Joanne was runner up for top debater in the World Health room. This year Holy
Trinity took home the most prestigious award at the conference, the Gunther Hartman award for top
country delegation. This was awarded to France and the delegates were Stephen Haring, Shane Layte,
Joanne Minnett, Miranda Norman, and Jamie Moran. This event involved the schools in the metro region.

Canadian Geographic Challenge
Congrats to Nathan P. Mullins who won the school level challenge. He went on to win the provincial
challenge to compete in the Nationals in June where he made a good showing for our school.
Annual Town of Torbay Entrepreneurship Competition
The town of Torbay sponsored a business competition at HTH. Eight students competed and the projects
were excellent. The winners will be announced at the awards presentation on the last day of school. The
competitors were: Selina Collins, Devin Gould, Jayna Green, Brandon Kennedy, Steven Kennedy, Shane
Layte, Natosha Power, Sarah Mayo. The awards will be $350, $225 & $125 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Each other
participant will receive a $60 gift certificate.
Entrepreneurship Provincial Success
Students completing Enterpreneurship 3209 have to complete a mandatory business plan. Three projects
were chosen from our school to compete in the Provincial Fair in Marystown in late May. All groups did
well and the competition was strong. Jayna Green (EYISM) placed 3rd and won $500. Sarah Mayo
(Lilly the Lost Hedgehog) won $100 ITunes card for the People's Choice Award. Overall,
congratulations to all students, this has been another successful year for the Enterprise program at Holy
Trinity High.

English Language Arts Dept
Drama News
Congratulations to the performing artists who came together this May to perform at a youth showcase and
Irish/NFLD concert with the Martin Family in aid of the Janeway. The performers were part of a student
committee who worked together to plan two excellent sessions. This show was one of several events
held at the school to raise money for the Janeway. We were so proud to watch our students on NTV
presenting their cheque for $2,000.00 during the Janeway Telethon.
This year’s Drama 2206 saw many of our Drama students taking lead roles both on and off stage in the
organization of our annual variety show at Christmas time. It has become a great tradition at our school
and it continues to showcase our talented musicians, singers and actors at Holy Trinity. A special thank
you to Ms. Aylward who did a fantastic job this year overseeing the show while Mrs. Clarke was out. As
well, thank you to Holy Trinity alumni Alyta Langmead who offered to help out with the show. What a
great tradition!
Scripps Spelling Bee Competition
This year, Holy Trinity High School held its second
annual Scripps Spelling Bee competition. We had
increased participation this year, with eleven
participants who studied and prepared for this local
school event. Many spectators including parents and
students observed 18 suspenseful rounds of spelling
words. Congratulations to David Humby and Emily
Hynes were found to be the two most proficient
spellers in our school!! These two young individuals
represented Holy Trinity High at the Regional Spelling

Bee held at the Holy Heart Theatre. Both spellers were proficient in their presentations. Emily Hynes took
an incredible second place finish. The English Department and the Holy Trinity High Community are
proud to have these participants show how exceptional our students really are!! Congratulations to you
both!
Public Speaking
This year, at Holy Trinity High School, students had a very successful year participating in numerous
public speaking competitions. Senior high students, Courtney Langmead and Laura Courtier,
presented at the annual Pouch Cove Lions Club, Lions Speak Out competition in February. The judges
were very impressed with their choice of topics and presentation skills; Courtney received first place, and
Laura came in second place. Courtney went on to represent Holy Trinity High at the Regional Pouch
Cove Lions Club Speak Off and Laura represented our school at the Rotary: Adventures in Citizenship
speaking competition at the Holiday Inn, hosted by the Rotary Club of St. John’s Northwest.
At the intermediate level, Hilary Hibbs, a grade 8 student, participated in the NLESD public speaking
event this past May. Hilary was a wonderful representative of Holy Trinity High School and was
applauded by the adjudicators for her seasoned speaking ability. Congratulations to all of the participants
for their time and effort!
We are looking forward to reviving our interest in public speaking at Holy Trinity High School and
appreciate any support from our school community.
Lisa’s Story Workshop and Presentation
English 2201 students will participate in a full day seminar and guest speaker presentation in connection
with our novel study Night. Writer and performer Lisa Hurd with producer and workshop facilitator Fabian
O’Keefe will be at our school later this month to present “Lisa’s Story: Wartime Experiences of a Little
Austrian Jewish Girl”. Lisa's Story will raise student awareness and acceptance of cultural diversity
through a multi-modal approach to performing arts. The tour will present an exploration of racism, hate,
and prejudice through a performance by Lisa Hurd. Students will hear the story of her wartime
experiences as a little Austrian Jewish girl during the Nazi era, and see her personal artifacts. Workshops
will be presented by Fabian O'Keefe to reflect and construct meaning through active participation in
writing exercises, group drama, and improvisation.
Prom News:
A very successful prom was held at The Sheraton Hotel on April 30. Ninety eight students in level III
along with their parents and teachers attended the prom ceremonies this year which were followed by a
Safe Prom at Axtion. Many thanks to the teachers who organized the Prom and the parents who
organized the Safe Prom activities.
