Help bring warmth to the
less privileged this winter
The Advertiser, along with
local celebrity Gerhard Steyn,
has partnered with Ford
Consolidated Motors, in
North Rand Road, to bring
warmth to the needy this
winter.
The local dealer has, for
some time, been running
an internal charity project
where, with the help of R50
donations from the public,
these blue blankets and
beanies can be purchased to
be distributed to those who
need such items desperately.
The Advertiser, with Steyn,
has now joined this initiative
with the invitation that the
community can now either
make a monetary donation
or can hand in any blanket or
beanie to the dealer directly.
July 29 will be the final day
for any form of donations,
be it monetary to buy the
blankets or for donations of
items themselves.
The items will then be
distributed as per agreement
between the Advertiser and
the local dealer.
It is envisioned for this
to become an annual joint
partnership, with next year’s
campaign kicking off before
the winter rolls around.
So, donate now and bring a
smile to those who are cold.

rs Africa 2016 Top 40 finalist Annette Dempsey, from Boksburg, has
a passion for pageants.
Over the years she has won more than
100 titles.
Dempsey was born and raised in Springs
and, after school, relocated to Pretoria,
where she studied Business Economical
Management Sciences.
After completing her studies, she moved
back to the East Rand, where she started
teaching in Boksburg and has, ever since,
been a proud resident of our town.
Dempsey is no longer a school teacher,
as she wanted to move into the corporate
world and used her degree to climb the big
corporate ladder.
She now works as a sales representative.
For the past 12 years, Dempsey has also
been the proud owner of Feature Models
Boksburg.
“I enjoy teaching modelling and there is
nothing better than to see young girls evolve
into pageant queens with loads of selfesteem,” she said.
Dempsey’s life motto is to ‘’do what you
love and love what you do’’ and she, therefore, strongly believes that you should be
extremely happy in your career, as well as in
your personal life.
She’s an adventures person who loves
deep-sea fishing and snorkelling. She also
enjoys travelling and visiting countries with
different cultures, but loves Africa the most.
“I am definitely an African child who just
loves our sunny skies and beautiful wildlife,” she said.
Her reason for entering the Mrs Africa
pageant is the change she, as one person, can
make in young girls’ lives.
Even though she is not married, she will be
taking part in the Ms-section of Mrs Africa.
Mrs Africa supports the Dignity Dream
project, helping young girls to stay in school
and not miss out on life because of their
menstrual cycle.
Dignity Dream provides re-usable sanitary wear to young girls in Africa and Mrs
Africa finalists will be raising funds for this
project.
Private sponsors can also get in touch and
help, even if it is by sponsoring only one girl
with the right of dignity.

Should Annette Dempsey, from Boksburg,
be crowned Ms Africa, she would like to
do big things for the young girls in Africa.
on 082 864 0800, or send an email to annettedemp@yahoo.com.
According to Dempsey, her life has
already changed due to her entering this
pageant.
“Just to be more aware of things we take
for granted might to others mean the world,
or, as in the case of Dignity Dreams, mean
dignity for one girl,” she said.
“With dignity comes self-confidence and
with self-esteem you can do big things if
only you believe in yourself.”
Dempsey’s passion and love for people,
motivates her.
“Working with people and making a difference, even if it is a small one - I am the change
I would like to see in our world,” she said.
Should she be crowned Ms Africa, Dempsey would like to do big things for the young
girls in Africa.
“I believe that, by empowering one girl,
you will empower our future mothers,
teachers, doctors and lawyers,” she said.
South Africa will play host to this year’s
Mrs Africa 2016 grand finale, which will
take place late in November.

Crime Brief
Phone thief cons
high-school girl
Common robber arrested
On June 29, around 5am, the complainant was getting ready for business
in her tent shop when suddenly there
was an unknown man in her store demanding her cellphone. According to the
Boksburg North SAPS communication
officer, Capt Juanita Coetzer, the suspect
beat the complainant until she fell to the
ground.
“He grabbed her phone and ran
away,” said Coetzer.
At that stage, the complainant noticed
a Boksburg North Sector vehicle passing. She stopped the members and
explained to them what happened.
“They took her with to look for the
suspect, who was then identified.
“The phone was also found in the suspect's possession and he was arrested."
House robber arrested
The complainant was doing her dishes
in her house when she heard footsteps
at the back of her house in Rowe Street,
Ravensklip, at about 10.15am on July 4.
She went to investigate and saw three
unknown men, who were apparently
looking for a room to rent.
“The complainant informed them that
there were no rooms to rent and went
back inside her house,” said Coetzer.
“The next moment, the three suspects
attacked her from the front door. They
overpowered her and covered her with a
blanket.”
The suspects fled with a few items.
Later that day, one suspect was arrested and two items were recovered.
Further investigation is still ongoing.
More shelters needed
Fanie Mthupha

N
otwithstanding that
numerous Boksburg residents experience abuse at
the hands of their partners, close
relatives or someone they know,
the Gauteng provincial government says it is not planning to
establish Green Door sanctuaries
in the city.
A Green Door is a temporary
safe-house to which abused
women can flee, often with their
children, when they come under
attack from their partners or a
family member.
The facility also offers refuge
services, including temporary
accommodation, counselling and
referrals to the nearest professional relevant service providers
for medical assistance, counselling and shelter, among other
things.
Local NGOs and police records
reveal that domestic violence in
Boksburg is widespread.
However, according to the
Department of Community Safety,
there are, apparently, not enough
of these incidents to persuade it
to establish more Green Doors in
Boksburg.
Identification of a Green Door
site is informed by the need and
the gender-based violence (GBV)
occurrences and statistics, as recorded by the SAPS. In that case,
the number of reported incidents
of domestic violence in Boksburg
apparently do not qualify the area
to have more Green Doors.
This publication has established
that some of the domestic violence
victims report their attackers to
the police and NGOs, but others
are too ashamed and afraid to
come forward.
It was also found that those who
report such cases seldom open
criminal cases against the perpetrators, instead, they opt to apply
for a protection order against the
abuser at the Magistrate’s Court.
The records revealed that, in the
Boksburg policing precinct, incidents of violence against women
in the family fluctuates between
four and 14 monthly.
Only two of the 12 domestic
violence incidents reported to
the Boksburg police during June
resulted in prosecution – because
victims decided not to open criminal cases against their abusers.
Both the Boksburg and Reiger
Park police said they were working closely with other government
departments, NGOs and community leaders, to prevent domestic
violence and to bring offenders to
justice.
Victims remain silent
According to the Boksburg
SAPS Victim Empowerment
Centre’s (VEC) trauma counsellor,
Ntombi Mabaleka, only a few of
the victims to whom they have attended reluctantly agreed to take
legal action against their partners.
She added that most of them refuse to break free from the abuse
once and for all.
Despite the risks they and
their children face, many abused
women believe in the adage: ''Better the devil you know”.
They would rather return to
the violent perpetrators than be
placed in the shelters for abused
women, according to Mabaleka.
The Boksburg SAPS’s Victim
Empowerment Centre provides
24-hour support to victims of
crime, including abused women
who may be facing harassment
from their current and ex-partners. But most victims shun the
services rendered by the VEC,
making its existence pointless.
A place of sanctuary
Although the department claims
that there is no Green Door to
respond to the most basic needs
of domestic violence victims in
Boksburg, the Advertiser, in fact,
discovered that such a facility exists in Reiger Park.
The victim reception centre is
located in the backyard of Angie
Reiners, who serves as an ambassador of the Green Door Centre.
Reiners has, for years, devoted her
life to providing effective, expert,
empathetic support to survivors
of domestic violence. The facility
on her property complements the
work she does for victims of abuse
at the Ithemba Victim Support
Centre, which is located opposite
the Reiger Park Police Station.
The Green Door, which was
launched during the 16 Days
of Activism campaign in 2014,
provides a safe environment, with
a homely atmosphere, a comfortable bed and sofas, as well as toys
for children, and provides aroundthe-clock care.
Reiners said the centre covers high-density areas with high
levels of domestic violence and
abuse and, at times, the number
of domestic violence cases in the
Reiger Park policing precinct, for
which the facility caters, soars by
an alarming 40 incidents in one
month.
“On average, per month, I
attend to at least 35 victims of
domestic violence and abuse, who
arrive at the Green Door to seek
help. Our communities are in

dire need of such services. These
include Reiger Park, Ramaphosa,
Delmore Garden, Delmore Park,
Delmore and Jerusalem informal

added.
Reiners stated that the centre,
like other sexual abuse centres
nationwide, sometimes runs short
of all the things she needs to run it
effectively.
For that reason, she is appealing
for donations to enable the Green
Door to continue rendering its services effectively.
“We all know that domestic
violence refuges save lives and are
essential services for women, and
children, escaping abuse," Reiners
said.
"Without centres like this
one, the highest risk women are
vulnerable to being killed in their
own homes by violent partners.”
She is calling on the police to
drastically improve the way such
crimes are investigated and perpetrators punished.
Reiners admitted that local
refuges aren't always enough to
provide a safe space for the large
number of both local women and
children who have to flee their
homes to get away from persistent
and dangerous perpetrators.
She, therefore, requests that
the government join forces with
local NGOs to educate the youth
about healthy relationships and to
regularly hold high profile public
awareness campaigns that send
a clear message that domestic
violence will not be tolerated in
our society.
Reiners is also calling on the
relevant departments to introduce
more Green Door facilities in

A Sunward Park High School pupil was
robbed of her cellphone by a woman
who allegedly needed directions to a
particular street in the area.
The incident happened outside the
school premises, after the learner had
written her last exam paper, on Monday, June 20.
According to the victim’s mother,
while her daughter was waiting for
transport - accompanied by two of her
friends - a woman in a vehicle, which
looked like a grey Opel, approached
them.
“A female, who had short black hair
and was slightly overweight, asked if
they could help her find Solomon Street,
as she had to help an old woman who
had fallen and broke her hip,” the complainant said.
In order to assist the woman, the victim took out her cellphone and searched
for the street on Google Maps, only to
find that there is no Solomon Street in
the Sunward Park area.
“The woman then asked if my daughter could call, or even send a pleasecall-me, to the woman in crisis,” the
complainant said.
“My daughter sent the please-call-me
to a number starting with 072.”
Someone did reportedly call back and
the pupil put the phone on speaker, as
she held on to it to assist the woman in
the vehicle.
No one spoke and the phone went off.
Apparently the person on the other
side called back again and, before the
pupil could put the phone back on
speaker, the woman in the vehicle
grabbed the cellphone.
“My daughter moved closer to the
vehicle and the woman, who was at that
time standing on a speed hump, asked if
she could park the vehicle properly,” the
complainant said.
“With the cellphone in her possession, she moved the vehicle off the speed
hump and, as my daughter approached
the vehicle, the woman sped off with the
phone.”
A case was opened at the Boksburg
Central Police Station and is under
investigation.

parking business.
Her career progressed further when,
in 2005, she was appointed assistant
general manager of Durban International Airport.
She led and managed the operational transition of Durban International
Airport, within a limited window of
convenience, to the new King Shaka
International Airport, in time for the
2010 Fifa World Cup.
She continued to serve in this position until early 2012.
In that year she was appointed deputy director for operational readiness
planning at Guarulhos International
Airport, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
“I formed part of a team that
played a critical role in improving
the airport's capability and ensuring
its readiness to handle an influx of
aircraft and passengers in time for the
2014 Fifa World Cup, in Brazil,” Pityi
said.
After successfully completing the
Brazil project she returned to South
Africa in August, 2015, to head up
the flagship OR Tambo International
Airport as the general manager.
“I was greatly humbled by the accolade. Female representation, particularly black females in key strategic
roles in aviation, continues to be a
challenge,'' she said.
"In order for a woman to overcome
the obstacles and excel in this industry
it requires endurance and high levels
of perseverance. I was honoured at
being appointed as the first female
general manager of Africa’s flagship
airport.
"To me it’s an indication and an
acknowledgement of the contribution I
have made to the aviation industry.”
Pityi believes that her job requires
her to invest in staying abreast with key
developments in the organisation and
within the aviation industry.
She said the challenge that this presents is the inability to achieve a work/
life balance.
Her motto in life is that she is highly
driven by success, disciplined and a
firm believer that the quality of her contribution determines the quality of life
she gets to enjoy, while having a regard
for others and being humble.
Pityi advises people who would want
to make it big in life to first identify the
industry they love and in which they
would like to excel.
She said once this is done it is imperative to appreciate the importance
of starting from the bottom, to learn
the ropes from those regarded as being
most experienced and wise.
“Stay focused and use education as
your stepping stone, pursue quality
opportunities that will take you to the
career of your dreams,'' she added.
"There will, admittedly, be many
disappointments along the way, but do
not focus on them. Any person wanting
to make it big in life needs to appreciate
that there are no shortcuts in life.
"They must be hard workers, persevere, be a team player, reliable and
consistent in the organisation.".

Lewe van ’n hawelose vrou
Ischke de Jager
ischke@caxton.co.za
O
m ’n hawelose vrou op straat te wees, is
nie vir sissies nie.
Gertruida Koekemoer woon al die
afgelope drie jaar op straat en, volgens haar,
is dit “sleg om op straat te wees, want ek is ’n
vrou”.
“’n Vroumens moet elke dag skoon wees en
nie vuil nie; dit maak my baie seer,” voeg sy by.
Haar ouers, Jan en Meisie, is in 2004
oorlede. Ná hulle dood het sy vir ’n tydperk –
tot 2013 – by ’n vriend gebly, maar het glo die
hasepad gekies, omdat hy by dwelms betrokke
was. “Ek wil glad nie betrokke raak by iemand
“As mense moeilikheid met my soek staan hy
agter my,” het sy gesê. Op die oomblik bly hulle
nie in ’n tent nie.

Dawn Park’s youth take a
stand against voting
Aaron Damane
Youth in Dawn Park have
taken their stand against voting as the local government
election approaches.
This follows concerns about
the way the government is
treating the issue of unemployment.
According to some of the
youth interviewed by the Advertiser, a lot of promises have
been made and the youth feels
it is now time the government
n.
should take action.
A young man, Thabo
mpleted
Mokoena, who completed
nd who
school last year and
er
hangs at the corner
of Shirley Street,
told the Advertiser he will
definitely not
vote,
"I am not registered. You see
I am from Ubuhle Park, but I
spend most of my time here on
the street at Dawn Park with
my friends.
"Not because I like to but
because I have no choice. My
mother (48), my sister (17), my
two bothers (10) and (7) are
sharing a one-room cottage
that my mother is renting and
there is no way I can share
such a small space with them.
"And the RDP house we
were promised was given to
someone else because my
mother could not afford to pay
the official the money that he
wanted.
"Today I am sleeping in different friends' homes. I have
to stay on the street during
the day and go find shelter at
night.
"I am not going to vote
because not one of the parties
deserves my vote,” he said.
Another youngster who
spends his time on the street,
Moeketsi Tsotetsi told the
Advertiser that he has voted a
number of times but there is
no change.
“There
is no way I
can vote and
then stay on
the street
like this. I
am even
addicted to
d
drugs today,
which all started
because my life is on the street
instead of working.
"If there were job opportunities none of this would have
happened,” said Moeketsi.
A young woman named
Londy Ledwaba said that the
government brought in corrupt
foreigners into the country,
which is why she will not vote.
"And these foreigners are
the ones who are corrupting
our youth by selling drugs to
them. If you look at the lack of
employment and opportunities
to make a life for yourself, then
I will say the government is letting us down,” said Ledwaba.
The group worked much harder with this project than the previous ones.

Blessed with water
W
ithin a period of six weeks,
the Oos-Rand Staan Saam
group collected over 100 000
litres of water for Kroonstad.
“The Bokkie Week is celebrating
its 25th anniversary this week and
we have decided to take the water to
Kroonstad since they do not have a
drop of water,” said organiser Yvonne
Davies.
On Saturday, July 2, a convoy of
five trucks, vehicles and motorcycles,
together with Afriforum Alberton’s
4x4 club and WSSA (Water Shortage
South Africa), delivered the water to
Huis Eden, Hoërskool Kroonstad, and
a church in Kroonstad.
More than 400 000 litres of water
was delivered to the town.
According to Davies, the group
worked much harder with this project
than the previous ones.
She said that the group does all the
work for their projects themselves,
which includes the collection of water
and the loading and offloading of the
trucks.
There were water drop-off points at
Pieter from North Point Spar in Witkoppie Ridge, Ester from ABH Auto
Services in Benoni, Tisha at Sunward
Park Gemeenskapskerk, Pastor Nino
Govender from Siloam Ministries in
Dalpark, Brakpan, and CIPC in Van
Dyk Park, Boksburg.
The group was fortunate to raffle
tickets to collect money for the project.
Ferdie from BMT Logistics sponsored an Edblo bed and raffle tickets
were sold at R50.
Heidi and JP from Specsavers in
Springs donated a R1 000 grocery
voucher and raffle tickets were R10
each.
One hundred bales of hay was
bought for 10 farmers in Koppies who
are suffering from the drought.
“A special thank you to every one of
our sponsors and people who contributed to the success of this project,”
said Davies.
The Oos-Rand Staan Saam group
would like to thank the following:
Brandon from Triton Express
who sponsored an eight-ton truck,
with a driver.
Ferdie from BMG Logistics who
sponsored a 30-ton interlink truck,
with a driver who delivered the bales
of hay in Koppies.
Andries from Monachus Project
Logistics who sponsored three 30-ton
interlink trucks, with drivers who
delivered the water in Kroonstad.
Christo from Waste Giant in
Johannesburg who sponsored 20-litre
water bottles.
Danzelle Dry and the New Apostolic Church for their contribution.
Cindy from East Rand Motorshow for sponsoring a stand to donate
water and money.

A
quite extraordinary success is
transpiring way, way above the
sky, with Nasa's Juno space-
craft.
Yes, we are talking about outer space
... and not about wasting space by writing about the Oscar Pistorius trial (it is
done, so let it rest), or the SABC saga
(we all know this is censorship).
The Nasa space programme has,
over the years, received criticism for
spending millions exploring space,
while it fails to benefit mankind, that is
ravished by plague, famine and hunger
right here on Earth.
Nasa's space exploration is again in
the spotlight (or is that on the radar?),
and so is the cost of such endeavours.
After an almost five-year journey to
the solar system’s largest planet, Jupiter, Nasa's spacecraft recently entered
Jupiter’s orbit during a 35-minute
engine burn.
With its suite of nine science
instruments, Juno will investigate the
existence of a solid planetary core,
map Jupiter's intense magnetic field,
measure the amount of water and
ammonia in the deep atmosphere, and
observe the planet's auroras.
The mission will also, apparently,
let us take a giant step forward in

A marvellous space odyssey
as the world suffers below
mankind's understanding of how giant
planets form and the role these titans
played in putting together the rest of
the solar system.
The Juno spacecraft launched on
August 5, 2011, from Cape Canaveral
Air Force Station, in Florida.
And yes, it did cost around R16billion to build and has travelled 2.7
billion kilometres.
Last year I also turned my attention
to the solar system when mentioning
Nasa celebrating another great milestone, when one of their spacecraft,
New Horizons, became the first one to
reach the distant dwarf planet – Pluto.
This, at the time, was a significant
event, as it was seen as the last unexplored world in the solar system.
So yes, while I am singing (I know,
it is a scary thought) Twinkle Twinkle
Little Star to my son before bedtime
these days, high above us mankind
continues to press forward at huge
expense to explore the universe.
As with Pluto, and now with Jupiter,
Nasa remains in the firing line for embarking on futile adventures that hold
no benefit for mankind.
The argument revolves around the
point of going to space to explore,
when this will hold little value or
Your Views
answers to solve the decay of the world
below.
Granted, while it is all good and
well to explore our solar system, what
about all the refugees orbiting Europe
in desperate hope of survival, or all the
starving children orbiting an empty
bowl?
Mankind has always been on the
quest for answers and finding meaning
to it all, but that very philosophical or
spiritual quest, now extended to the
stars, so often means very little for a
world that is plunged into famine and
poverty.
I am sure all the millions who are
famished, impoverished, sick, fleeing
or dying are not looking at the stars
and admiring Nasa's ability to explore
Jupiter.
They would be more pleased to get
just a speck of the billions spent on
this voyage.
As mentioned in my space article of
2015, the argument of Nasa's exploration being futile does hold water, but,
then again, where would man be today
without exploration?
Stephen Hawking assessed that,
because man is human, we love to
explore. Our explorations has, at least,
forced mankind to reassess itself in the
wake of bloody barbarism, to force
itself to hope for a better world not
torn apart by violence and to instil
courage to seek peace in the face
of fear and intolerance. Let us then
also be reminded, while taking
time to admire the explorations
billions of miles away and cyclists
tackling the daunting Tour de
France, that the greatest exploration on which mankind should
constantly embark is the inner
exploration, to become a better
human being.
At least again, with the Jupiter
adventure, we will be reminded
that we are not the centre of the
universe and that, even though
we have achieved extraordinary
things, we should remain humble,
because we have, at the same time,
been responsible for horrendous
crimes.
So, while that little spacecraft
up in the universe is spinning and
clicking away so that we can oooh
and aaah at the photos, at least it
serves as a reminder to mankind
to look after this little planet - after
all, this is our only home.

No delivery on government promises
Howard Skeens, from Sunward Park, writes:
To those who are still blind and
continue to swallow the hollow
promises of the government, let’s
review and question these promises.
Have we not heard them all
before?
Delivering efficient services to all
"our people". So how come there
are regular and ever more violent
protests about the lack of services?
Jobs, jobs, jobs. The President
promised over the next five years
the government will create millions
of jobs. So where are they? Statistics
SA has just reported that unemployment has increased, again.
Under stifling government red
tape the economy is being strangled. Foreign investors are wary of
the constantly changing rules and
regulations.
All this is leading to failing businesses and investment downgrades
to final junk status.
Blatant corruption and crime are
out of control. Can these get worse?
Yes.
How come the government leadership, their families and pals are
doing so well while we all struggle?
The “It’s my turn now” syndrome
has kicked in, resulting in many
political killings.
Reason - the faction that “wins”
has a direct pipeline into the now
depleted finances - you’ve had five
years to get rich, now it’s my turn.
Nothing will improve under the
current government rule. The past
25 odd years have yielded crumbling infrastructure, regular power
outages and serious water problems
in many parts of the country.
Do we want a replication of the
Zimbabwe disaster?

Skill centre graduates celebrate
F
riday, June 24, was a
big day for the students
of St Anthony’s Skill
Training Centre, as they
gathered in the school’s hall
to celebrate their milestone
in style.
The day honoured more
than 70 bright young students of the training centre's technical school, who
received their certificates
for the completion of their
respective courses during
the school’s 2016 graduation
ceremony.
Students did not cross this
river alone, therefore the
event also recognised their
''bridges and inspiration''.
These included the instructors, families of graduates,
community leaders and
friends.
Seen with their teacher, Carmen Barnes, are students who successfully
completed the End-User Computing course.
These students gained their pre-apprenticeship qualification in diesel
mechanics.
These graduates are now skilled in bricklaying and carpentry. They are seen
with their instructors, George Mpebe and Mapule Mphaka.
These students have successfully completed their plumbing course.

he South African Open
Judo Championships
came to Carnival City from
Sunday, June 26, to Saturday,
July 2.
Judo is the largest indoor
Olympic sport and the second
largest practised sport in the
world.
Judo South Africa’s premium
event for the year attracted
hundreds of the top judokas
in the country and even as far
as Namibia, Mozambique and
Angola with players in various
categories and from all walks of
life competing.
Rob Jordaan, marketing director of Judo South Africa, told the
Advertiser that Carnival City’s
Big Top Arena was a fantastic
venue as it was spectator friendly over the seven-day period.
“The floor itself was a bit
crowded, but we managed to get
by.”
Jordaan said the state of judo
in South Africa is healthy and in
extremely good hands.
He added that South Africa’s
judo hopes will be pinned on
one man, Zack Piontek, who
will realise his lifetime dream of
becoming an Olympian as Rio de
Janeiro beckons.
Jordaan also reserved praise
for the country’s coaches who
he believes are doing a fantastic
job in growing the sport particularly at a development level and
among the visually impaired.
“The future looks great for us,”
he said.
“We [Judo SA] have a total of
5 000 registered members and
our local coaches are doing a
marvellous job.”
Asked what the benefits of this
form of modern martial arts are,
Jordaan said: “Judo is a life skill,
if you get into an altercation you
can handle yourself by using
your opponent's own energy to
throw him off.”
Asked for advice on how an
individual can get involved with
the sport he replied: “We do
have coaches who are involved at
school level for those who want
to start at a young age otherwise
you can join a local club in your
area.
“Judo South Africa’s website
has a whole list of local clubs
where you can hone your skills.”

Parkdene sisters Daniela
and Gina Bergonzi obtained
national colours after impressing at the recently held South
African Japan Karate Association National Tournament.
Daniela (12) obtained her
colours after finishing sec-
ond in kumite while Gina (9)
celebrated a bronze medal in
kata .
The tournament saw a total
of 2 810 competitors from
all provinces showcase their
skills.
This was the first time that
provinces entered only their
top competitors, making the
standard of karate incredibly
high.
The competitors had to be
selected by their provinces, under their age and belt category
and only the top eight winners
made it to the nationals.
They were part of the SA
JKA Bedfordview team that
returned with 19 medals. The
ages varied from six to 60
years old.
Both Daniela and Gina are
pupils of St Dominic’s.

Hockey grows in strength in metro
Logan Green
T
here has certainly been a major shift in dynamics in the
growth of hockey in Ekurhuleni, since the development of the
Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association (EGHA) AstroTurf, in Benoni.
A terrific partnership has also
formed between EGHA and St
Dunstan’s College, since the
school constructed its own AstroTurf.
Both artificial surfaces have
allowed for the EGHA’s first accredited South African Hockey
Association (SAHA) tournament,
the South African Ladies Country
Districts Tournament, to take
place in the region.
The tournament got under way
on Sunday, July 3, and ran until
Friday, July 8.
The main final took place at
3.30pm on Friday, at the EGHA
Astro.
Thereafter, a South African
Country Districts team will be
selected to do battle at the 2017
Inter-provincial Hockey Tournament (IPT).
Pool A consisted of Western
Province, Northern Natal, Northern Blues A, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, while Pool B comprised
KZN Inlands, Eastern Province,
Eastern Gauteng A, KZN Coastals, Northern Blues B and Eastern
Gauteng B.
According to Chris Fall, president of the EGHA, the Country
Districts tournament serves as a
trial for bigger competitions to
come.
“If we nail this, we will certainly
be in line to host other larger
events,” he said.
“We are laying the groundwork
for more and more serious hockey
to come to the province.”
He also praised Benoni Northerns Sports Club, where the EGHA
Astro is based, for coming on
board and for giving the EGHA
great support in terms of organising the tournament.
Fall also thanked St Dunstan’s
College for making its Astro available for two games.
“We have an excellent relationship with St Dunstan’s and their
facility is amazing,” he said.
With regard to the tournament,
Fall said that with 11 teams that
participated there is some excellent
potential coming through.
“About 40 per cent of the players are first-timers at a Country
Districts tournament,’’ he explained. “It gives those who do not
necessarily get into trials for IPTs
an opportunity to come down and
represent their province.”
He added that it has also allowed
for Easterns to enter a B-team into
the tournament, whereas, in the
past, they would send only one
team to Country Districts.
“It is excellent, because it gives
exposure to another 16 local
women hockey players.”
According to Fall, it is fantastic
to be hosting the various provinces
in Benoni and he encouraged spectators to come through for Friday’s
big matches.
The opening match was played
between Eastern Gauteng A and
KZN Inlands, on Sunday, and a
familiar surname in local hockey
circles, “Eustice” (Sian Eustice),
opened the scoring in the competition, with the first goal for Inlands,
in what would turn out to be 4-0
win for the visitors.
Jaclyn Capazario, in action for the Eastern Gauteng A side, chases down the ball while teammates and opponents look on, in the opening match versus KZN Inlands, on Sunday,

LUINDULA READY FOR WAR
Sabelo Mashego
sabelom@caxton.co.za
O
utspoken EFC middleweight fighter Patrick “God of War” Luindula says a fighter
as good as he is does not need good luck.
The Angola international, who fights out of
the Junkyard MMA Gym, in Boksburg, was
speaking to the Advertiser ahead of his second
fight at EFC 51, at Carnival City, on Friday (July
15), against Quaide Openshaw (1-2-0).
Luindula, 28, made a victorious EFC debut
back in December, when he made light work of
Didier Nyembwe, with a round one submission
win.
Quizzed on his battle with the 24-year-old
Openshaw, the God of War did not sound like
an impressed man.
“Honestly, I haven’t said much on social media (about his upcoming fight), because it’s not
the fight I wanted,'' he said.
''I wanted to face Gordon Roodman. I’m excited and well prepared for the fight with Quaide,
but fighting him won’t do much for my career.
“Gordon is who I wanted; he’s scared. He
knows I’m going to beat him.”
About his preparations for EFC 51, Lundula added: “Preps have gone really well; I’m
worried for Quaide, because the preparations
weren’t for him.
"We thought we were going to get Gordon
and we went all out, we went into beast mode
preparing.
"Unfortunately for the kid (Roodman), he
jumped into the shark's den at the wrong time –
the beating he’s going to get is not for him.”
Luindula has done his fair share of research
on his opponent and comes in extremely confident of the win, come Friday evening.
“I’ve watched Quaide in every single one of
his amateur fights. He’s a brawler and is very
aggressive, but he lacks technique. I don’t see
him beating me,'' he said.
''For me it’s about going in there, getting that
‘W’ and moving on.”
Not all is lost for the God of War, however; he
has confirmed that he will get Roodman before
the end of the year, with EFC 54 being the likeliest event. - @SabeloBoksburg
Smith’s broken limb frustrates Kruger
EFC middleweight fighter
Jeremy ''‘Pitbull'' Smith recently
broke his arm during training
for his much anticipated return
to the hexagon, against JP
''Tinkerbell'' Kruger.
The two were scheduled to
headline the EFC 51 event, at
Carnival City, on Friday, July
15.
Smith broke his arm attempting a spinning backfist against
his sparring partner, leaving
Kruger and MMA aficionados,
who were looking forward to
watching Smith in his first bout
following a hiatus spanning
well over a year, desperately
disappointed.
“When I heard about it, I was
sad about it,” explained Kruger.
“I was very very excited
about this match, I was feeling
very ready and I really think
it was going to be a banger of
a fight. I was really excited to
trade some leather with Smith,
but I wish him a quick recovery
and to be blessed.”
Meanwhile, Smith is set to be
out of action for six weeks, but
has promised his fans that he’ll
be back before the end of the
year - better and stronger.
Kruger is preparing for a
grappling tournament, set to
take place in Cape Town, in
early August. News on his next
EFC fight is yet to break.
Despite Kruger’s forced
withdrawal from the imminent
show, Boksburg’s representation remains healthy, with two
local fighters in action.
An undercard bout will see
the outspoken Patrick ''God of
War'' Luindula take
ake
on Quade Opendshaw in their middleweight clash,
B
while Barend ''BB
Gun'' Nienaber
faces Scotland
international
Danny Henry.
The event will
be headlined by a
ight,
lightweight title fight,
merican
which will see American
Dave ''Pain Train'''' Mazany challenge the reigningg champion,
Leon ''Iron Lion'' Mynhardt. -
