to Restore Power in Emergency Situations
Natural Disasters Don’t Stand in the Way of Contractors
Committed to their Customers and Communities
Hurricane Gustav hammered Baton Rouge, La. in September, ripping off part of the roof of Louisiana
Electric Co.’s building and destroying inventory in its shop. Rather than shutting down operations,
however, the residential and commercial electrical contracting company hooked up to generator
power and sent its 25 electricians out in the community to help its customers.
“There are a lot of people out of power in Baton Rouge for days after the storm,” says Jerry Eagan, office
manager, who estimated that 54 out of the 64 “parishes” or counties were still in the dark. “A lot of our
electricians also don’t have power at home, and many of them have homes that are damaged.”
The electricians were working 10 hours a day, four days a week to hook up portable, standby
generators for their customers. In most cases, the customers supplied their own generators, and
called the electricians to help get them up and running.
“They are putting in long hours, but we are not pushing them to the brink,” he says.

Safety Matters
After a natural disaster, such as a hurricane,
flood, or tornado, the phone often rings off the
hook at an electrical contracting company. It’s
always important, however, for companies to
not risk the safety of their employees for the
sake of increasing their profitability, Eagan
says. The electricians are using the proper
protective equipment, and if they don’t have
the right supplies, they’re making sure that
they get them before they begin work.
“We won’t go outside the Code for anything,”
he says. “The hurricane won’t make us do things
that we don’t normally do, like standing in water
to redo a service. We don’t need the money that
badly to put a man’s health and welfare at risk.”
Around the Clock
To get customers’ power back on, electrical
service companies often provide them with 24/7
emergency service. Nieding Electrical Services
in Richmond, Va., has been in business for more
than 20 years. Owner David Nieding remembers
a few years ago, when trees fell on power lines
and meter bases during Hurricane Isabel. At that
time, 300,000 people were without power.
“In the first two days, I was in the dark myself,
and I charged my cell phone in my car,” says
Nieding, who says his home/business operated
on generator power for 11 days. “After that, calls
started to come in.”
His company, which specializes in not only
residential service, but also municipal work,
is always a call away.
“If someone calls and needs something, we’ll
shoot right out there and help them,” he says.
On Hold
Natural disasters can not only disrupt power
to homeowners, they can also inflict serious
structural and financial damage to commercial
and industrial buildings under construction.
In Baton Rouge, Eagan estimated that the
construction projects in the downtown area
were postponed for about a week.
The storms can also have a long-term effect
on the electrical industry as project owners
and contractors shift spending to take care of
unplanned, necessary repairs. For example,
one riverside plant in downtown Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, sustained millions of dollars of damage
due to the recent flood. The flood created a lot
of work for electricians in the short term, but
could disrupt future construction spending in
the long run.
While it’s too soon to tell what will happen
to many of the construction projects affected
by the recent disasters, electrical contracting
companies are focusing on what they do best —
helping their customers in their time of need.

When a flood struck the riverside Cargill
plants in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
McAreavy immediately called the electrical
contracting company. His client then assessed
the situation and put a laundry list of
necessary materials together.
A 500-year-flood inflicted hundreds of
millions of dollars worth of damage to plants
in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa. To make
sure the electricians had the supplies they
needed to restore power to the plants, WESCO
set up a 53-foot trailer with 600–800 items
such as wire, fuses, and conduit.

“We lit the trailer with generator power, and
it was manned by WESCO personnel daily,”
he says. “It has everything the electricians
need to put the plant back together.”

to Restore Power in Emergency Situations
Natural Disasters Don’t Stand in the Way of Contractors
Committed to their Customers and Communities
Hurricane Gustav hammered Baton Rouge, La. in September, ripping off part of the roof of Louisiana
Electric Co.’s building and destroying inventory in its shop. Rather than shutting down operations,
however, the residential and commercial electrical contracting company hooked up to generator
power and sent its 25 electricians out in the community to help its customers.
“There are a lot of people out of power in Baton Rouge for days after the storm,” says Jerry Eagan, office
manager, who estimated that 54 out of the 64 “parishes” or counties were still in the dark. “A lot of our
electricians also don’t have power at home, and many of them have homes that are damaged.”
The electricians were working 10 hours a day, four days a week to hook up portable, standby
generators for their customers. In most cases, the customers supplied their own generators, and
called the electricians to help get them up and running.
“They are putting in long hours, but we are not pushing them to the brink,” he says.

Safety Matters
After a natural disaster, such as a hurricane,
flood, or tornado, the phone often rings off the
hook at an electrical contracting company. It’s
always important, however, for companies to
not risk the safety of their employees for the
sake of increasing their profitability, Eagan
says. The electricians are using the proper
protective equipment, and if they don’t have
the right supplies, they’re making sure that
they get them before they begin work.
“We won’t go outside the Code for anything,”
he says. “The hurricane won’t make us do things
that we don’t normally do, like standing in water
to redo a service. We don’t need the money that
badly to put a man’s health and welfare at risk.”
Around the Clock
To get customers’ power back on, electrical
service companies often provide them with 24/7
emergency service. Nieding Electrical Services
in Richmond, Va., has been in business for more
than 20 years. Owner David Nieding remembers
a few years ago, when trees fell on power lines
and meter bases during Hurricane Isabel. At that
time, 300,000 people were without power.
“In the first two days, I was in the dark myself,
and I charged my cell phone in my car,” says
Nieding, who says his home/business operated
on generator power for 11 days. “After that, calls
started to come in.”
His company, which specializes in not only
residential service, but also municipal work,
is always a call away.
“If someone calls and needs something, we’ll
shoot right out there and help them,” he says.
On Hold
Natural disasters can not only disrupt power
to homeowners, they can also inflict serious
structural and financial damage to commercial
and industrial buildings under construction.
In Baton Rouge, Eagan estimated that the
construction projects in the downtown area
were postponed for about a week.
The storms can also have a long-term effect
on the electrical industry as project owners
and contractors shift spending to take care of
unplanned, necessary repairs. For example,
one riverside plant in downtown Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, sustained millions of dollars of damage
due to the recent flood. The flood created a lot
of work for electricians in the short term, but
could disrupt future construction spending in
the long run.
While it’s too soon to tell what will happen
to many of the construction projects affected
by the recent disasters, electrical contracting
companies are focusing on what they do best —
helping their customers in their time of need.
