MT OWEN SOIL PROFILE 8 Yellow Podzolic, Dy3.22 This profile occurs on the midslope of a cleared hillside bordering Bettys Creek. Ground cover was approximately 95% and consisted of improved pasture. Slope approximately 3%. Underlying bedrock is sedimentary, probably lithic sandstone. Slow internal drainage. No erosion present. Moderate soil erodibility, low erosion hazard, no salting evident. Topsoil A1: 0 – 5 cm, 7.5YR4/2, pH 6.0. Loam, fine sandy, normal plastic, slightly sticky. Weak consistence, crumbly shear. Weak pedality, 5 – 10 cm, sub-angular blocky, rough-faced peds, breaking to 2 – 5 cm round secondary peds. Cracks 2 – 5 mm. Less than 2% stones (rounded to sub-angular, dispersed, 2 – 6 mm, weakly weathered, ironstone and jasper). Many roots, mainly in-ped. No pans or concretions. Clear wavy boundary. A2: 5 – 15 cm, 7.5YR4/2, pH 6.0. Sandy clay loam, normal plastic, slightly sticky. Strong consistence, brittle shear. Strong pedality, 10 – 20 cm subangular blocky, rough-faced peds, breaking to 5 – 10 cm columnar secondary peds. Cracks 2 – 5 mm. Up to 10% stones, especially towards base of A2, (rounded to subangular, dispersed and concentrated at the base, 2 – 60 mm, weakly weathered, metamorphic, igneous, petrified wood, ironstone and jasper). Common roots, mainly in-ped. No pans or concretions. Clear wavy boundary. Subsoil B: 15 – 65+ cm, 7.5YR5/4, pH 7.0. Medium clay, mottled, (with 30% dark red mottles and 10% pale orange mottles). Strong consistence, labile shear when moist. Moderate pedality, 10 – 20 cm columnar rough-faced peds. Cracks 2 – 5 mm. Up to 10% stones (rounded to sub-angular, dispersed, 2 – 60 mm, weakly weathered, metamorphic, igneous, ironstone). Few roots, mainly in-ped. No pans or concretions. MOUNT OWEN SOIL PROFILE 5 Grey-brown Podzolic, Db2.21 This profile occurs on the upper slope of a partially cleared hillcrest. The ground cover consisted of grasses and was 70%. Slope 1 to 2%. Underlying bedrock is sedimentary, probably lithic sandstone. Slow internal drainage. No erosion present. Moderate soil erodibility, low erosion hazard, no salting evident. Topsoil A1: 0 – 9 cm, 7.5YR3/2, pH 6.0. Loam, normal plastic, non-sticky. Weak consistence, crumbly shear. Weak pedality, 5 – 10 cm polyhedral rough-faced peds, breaking to 1 – 2 cm secondary peds. Cracks 2 – 5 mm. Less than 2% stones (sub-angular, dispersed, 2 – 6 mm, weakly weathered ironstone). Common roots, mainly in-ped. No pans or concretions. 1614/R02/A3 Umwelt (Australia) Pty Limited December 2003 1 Environmental Impact Statement Mt Owen Operations Previous Next Home Appendix 3 Soil Profile Descriptions A2: 9 – 25 cm, 7.5YR5/2, pH 6.5. Sandy clay loam, normal plastic, slightly sticky. Strong consistence, brittle shear. Strong pedality, 10 – 20 cm sub-angular blocky rough-faced peds, breaking to 5 – 10 cm secondary peds. Cracks 2 – 5 mm. Less than 2% stones (sub-rounded, dispersed, 2 – 60 mm, weakly and strongly weathered sedimentary and unidentified rock types). Few roots, mainly in-ped. No pans or concretions. B: 25 – 65 cm, 7.5YR4/3, pH 5.5. Medium clay. Strong consistence. Moderate pedality, 5 - 10 cm subangular blocky rough-faced peds. Cracks 2 – 5 mm. Less than 2% stones (sub-angular, dispersed, 20 – 60 mm, weakly and strongly weathered unidentified rock types). Few roots, mainly in-ped. No pans or concretions. MOUNT OWEN SOIL PROFILE 2 Rough-ped Gradational Soil, Gn1.84 This profile occurs on the alluvial flat bordering Bettys Creek. The ground cover consisted of improved pasture and was 95%. Slope approximately 1-2%. Slow internal drainage. No erosion present. Moderate soil erodibility, low erosion hazard, no salting evident. Topsoil A1: 0 – 40 cm, 10YR3/2, pH 6.0, approximately 10% pale orange mottles. Clay loam, normal plastic, slightly sticky. Strong consistence. Strong pedality, 10 – 20 cm, sub-angular blocky, rough-faced peds, breaking to 5 – 10 cm sub-angular blocky secondary peds. Cracks 2 – 5 mm. No stones. Many roots, mainly ex-ped. No pans or concretions. Gradational boundary. A2: 40 – 100 cm, 10YR5/3, pH 6.5, approximately 10% pale orange mottles. Light medium clay, normal plastic, moderately sticky. Very strong consistence. Strong pedality, 20 – 50 cm, sub-angular blocky, roughfaced peds, breaking to 5 – 10 cm sub-angular blocky secondary peds. Cracks 2 – 5 mm. Less than 2% stones (sub-rounded, dispersed, 6 – 60 mm, weakly weathered, not identified). Few roots. No pans or concretions. Gradual boundary. Subsoil B: >100 cm, 7.5YR6/3, pH 6.0, approximately 40% dark orange mottles. Sandy clay, very strong consistence. Weak pedality, sandy fabric. Between 2 and 10% stones (rounded to sub-rounded, dispersed, 6 – 60 mm, weakly to strongly weathered, sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock types). No roots, no pans or concretions. 1614/R02/A3 Umwelt (Australia) Pty Limited December 2003 2
