A NATURAL-BORN WRITER Writing has always been part of Meglin’s DNA, ever since he was a youngster growing up in Brooklyn. “Some people breathe; I write,” he says. In elementary school and junior high, teachers always encouraged Meglin to write, he says. At Erasmus Hall High School, he wrote stories for the school magazine. He didn’t initially carve out a career for himself as a wordsmith. When Long Island newsday.com 152.1 MILLION A Malverne playwright turns his experiences into entertainment rospective renters might get frustrated searching for an affordable apartment in New York City. But after his experience years ago, Al Meglin was inspired to do what comes naturally to him: He wrote a play about it. The Malverne playwright recalled the time about 30 years ago when he and his wife, Pat, were working for companies across the street from one another in Manhattan. Rather than commute from Long Island into the city all week long, they decided to get a studio apartment where they would stay during the week, and return home on weekends. “That’s not an easy task. You run into all kind of hotshot real estate people who try and convince you to buy totally inappropriate apartments,” says Meglin, 87. Now that adventure is recounted, with some altering of the facts to enhance the humor in the situation, in his one-act play, “East Village Vignette: An Improbable Romance.” The play, about a finicky flutist out to beat a demon real estate agent at her own game, is featured in the Metropolitan Playhouse’s East Side Stories, a festival of one-act plays about life on the Lower East Side that runs through May 3. “It’s just a charming play with a nice generational conflict and a crisis that are dealt with in a comic way,” says Alex Roe, artistic director of Metropolitan Playhouse. “The characters have quirks that are both recognizable and amusing.” N1 P daniel.bubbeo@newsday.com ADVERTISING SECTION ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT WHAT’S HAPPENING G31 newsday.com/act2 act two act2 Photo: Zachary Maxwell Stertz PHOTO GALLERY Celebrities at Brooklyn Nets games newsday.com/celebs ARI MINTZ 7 FAST BOATS, FASTER CARS HEALTHY START 2016 featuring ➊ Heart & Stroke Awareness MORT KÜNSTLER Art Collectors’ Find ➋ Weight Loss ➌ Dental Health ➍ Hearing SPRING FASHION, STONY BROOK VILLAGE, RESTAURANTS ON THE RISE TLC FOR THE HOME Celebrate with dinner for two VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT IDEAS MONTHLY PAGE VIEWS Local attractions you’ll love zone 3 • southeast nassau 27.1 MILLION NEWSDAY.COM/SPECIALSECTIONS 2114913301 TOTAL MONTHLY VISITS 12.9 MILLION UNIQUE Source: Scarborough NY 2015 (Release 2) Adobe Omniture February 2016 Includes Newsday, amNewYork, Hometown Shopper and News12.com MONTHLY VISITORS NEWSDAY MEDIA GROUP MISSION STATEMENTS For over 75 years, Long Island businesses have turned to a single source to market their products and services - Newsday. CONRAD WILLIAMS JR. healthnews BY DANIELLE DOUGLAS GABRIEL I The Washington Post t can be one of the most exhilarating things you do during the workday, but nailing the lunchtime workout can be tricky. Should you eat before or after? How much should you pack? Shower? No shower? And most important, how much exercise can you pack in during a lunch hour? The good news is that there are all sorts of tricks for getting the most out of your midday workout and several products that make it easier to navigate. HOW TO PREPARE The key is to have a plan. The night before, pack a light bag of just the essentials: a change of underwear, travel-size deodorant and wet wipes — if you won’t have time for a shower. Need to shower no matter what? Consider throwing in a bottle of dry shampoo to cut down on the amount of time you spend away from your desk or wear a ponytail that requires no maintenance post-workout. DEPOSITPHOTOS Another way to stay prepared is to keep a pair of sneakers and toiletries in your desk at work. That way, you can just grab what you need and go. Personal trainer Lee Jordan has noticed clients bringing no more than what can fit into a rolled-up T-shirt. In other words, pack light. WHAT TO EAT Scarfing down a big deli hero right before a run might not be the best idea, but you should eat something, said Classified Newsday acts as a powerful conduit between buyers and sellers with our three interactive marketplaces. • Real estate listing service 71 Hidden Ridge Dr | Huntington Brick front Summit model w/ 3 bdrm & 2.5 bth.
