ACTIVITIES I CRAFTS I TALKS EXHIBITIONS I EVENTS WORKSHOPS I COURSES TOURS AND MUCH MORE Salford Museum and Art Gallery & Ordsall Hall www.salfordcommunityleisure.co.uk/culture WELCOME TO SALFORD’S MUSEUMS! Salford Museum and Art Gallery Salford opened the first unconditionally free public lending library in January 1850, followed in the November by a museum and art gallery. The building was a mansion house known as Lark Hill, which had been built in the 1790s: and has given its name to our famous Lark Hill Place, a Victorian street within the museum. Today Salford Museum and Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of permanent displays and changing contemporary exhibitions together with a range of events and activities guaranteed to inspire. When you have visited the galleries why not pop into our café or purchase a souvenir in the museum shop. Ordsall Hall Salford’s Grade 1 listed Tudor manor house was first recorded in 1177. Since then, it has been home to Medieval and Tudor nobility, butchers, farmers, an Earl, an artist, priests, mill workers, cows and several ghosts! Today, it is an engaging heritage site open to visitors 5 days a week throughout the year. Surrounded by beautiful grounds, it boasts hands on exhibitions, immersive room settings, a small café and is available to hire for weddings and events. Why not bring a picnic to eat in the orchard and then enjoy a peaceful stroll around the house and gardens? ADMISSION IS FREE salfordcommunityleisure.co.uk Exhibitions EXHIBITIONS WITH THIS SYMBOL ARE FAMILY FRIENDLY Salford Museum and Art Gallery LANGWORTHY GALLERY Immortal Love from Shanghai 15th November 2014 to 15th March 2015 This exciting exhibition is a rare opportunity to see traditional Chinese art brought over especially from Shanghai. Highly respected artists Mr and Mrs Chen have been working with The Chinese Arts Association and leaders from Manchester’s China Town to curate the beautiful works you will see. Traditional Chinese skills are used including paper-cut, detailed Chinese painting, stone carving for wax seals and traditional Chinese watercolour painting. The artworks explore Chinese culture and traditions, exhibited alongside archive material from The Chinese Arts Association to illustrate the development of Manchester’s China Town. This is the first time this work has been exhibited in the UK and Salford Museum and Art Gallery are honoured to host the show. One Needs More Than Paint: Harry Ousey: A centenary exhibition 28th March to 5th July Born in Manchester in 1915, Harry Ousey’s recognisable abstract paintings were considered ahead of his time. Passionate about nature and landscape, his work is inspired by places he lived including Hayfield in Derbyshire, the coast of Cornwall and the landscape of France where he spent the last years of his life. Although part of the art scene in Cornwall in the 1950s and London and Paris in the 1960s, his work is little known today. This retrospective exhibition will celebrate his life on the centenary year of his birth. Exhibitions Ordsall Hall EGERTON GALLERY BLUESTAIRS COMMUNITY GALLERY Made in Eccles 14th February to 19th April NORTH GALLERY Salford Art Club Annual Exhibition 24th January to 26th April A popular yearly event for visitors, the annual Salford Art Club exhibition will present the very best works produced by members. A mixture of landscape, portrait and still life are shown in a variety of media. Photography students from Eccles Sixth Form Centre have worked on the theme ‘A sense of place’ for this special exhibition. The first time this work has been exhibited outside the college walls, this is a rare opportunity to see these images which reflect both Salford and Manchester. Swinton Photographic Society Annual Exhibition 25th April to 28th June Salford Then and Now by Swinton Photographic Society 8th February to 10th May Members of the society used old photographs from Salford’s Local History Library and took current images of exact locations, or as close as possible, as they appear today. The images captured and displayed in this exhibition will not only demonstrate just how remarkably, or perhaps not in some instances, such locations have changed, but also how the people and life in Salford has changed over the past decade. The Society is supported by Salford Council’s Community Committee. Messengers and Promises 17th May to 20th September Artist Kate Herbert and sculptor Angela Sidwell have united for the first time to create this exhibition. Together they explore the relationship between humans and animals and how these have been presented over the past century. From working partnerships to pampered pets, the artists draw inspiration from Salford’s collections and animals associated with Ordsall Hall. The Now, The North: Hugh Winterbottom 2nd May to 6th September Take a journey through Hugh Winterbottom’s work from the cityscapes of central Manchester and Salford, out into outskirt towns like Stockport, and into the more rural villages of Derbyshire. A local artist based in Greater Manchester, Hugh’s colourful paintings show the north at all times of day and in all weathers, in his fresh vibrant style. Look out for some of Angela’s sculptures throughout the hall and gardens! Showing a range of subject matter, the photographs include natural history, pictorial, human life, record, still life studies and portraiture in both colour and monochrome. The Society is supported by Salford Council’s Community Committee. LANGWORTHY GALLERY 100 Years Ago: Salford at War Until 15th Nov 2015 ‘100 Years Ago: Salford At War’, helps uncover some of Salford’s unique stories from World War One. The exhibition focuses on local characters, including the Broughton poet, Winifred Letts, Billy Unsworth, a soldier from Ordsall and Dr James Niven, who helped fight the Spanish Flu pandemic. The Victorian street is a must see when in Salford! LARK HILL PLACE LARK HILL PLACE IS ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN FEATURES OF SALFORD MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY Take a step back in time to Lark Hill Place, an atmospheric re-creation of a typical northern street during Victorian times. It has been very popular with visitors since it opened in 1957. The street was a way for the museum to preserve some of the heritage that was being pulled down all over Salford in the 1950s and 60s. The Victorian terraces were being cleared to make way for new housing and with it some communities were broken up. Lark Hill Place was seen as a way of bringing together some of the shops and houses from these areas to preserve them for future generations. Visitors can explore the street and dress up in traditional Victorian costumes to really get in the spirit of things. Afterwards visit the tea rooms and Café. The art gallery upstairs is also child friendly with some amazing artwork.
