Our website has been modified using Responsive Web Design
(RWD). RWD is an approach using specific layouts to provide an
optimal viewing experience across a wide range of devices. RWD
provides for easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling with virtually no reduction in site aesthetics. Coding on each page automatically recognizes what kind of
device is being used, and adjusts the graphics accordingly. It’s the
same site no matter what platform you use – it’s just optimized for
your use and viewing.
Another new feature of our site is an improved Community Events calendar. The calendar is also dynamic and will be automatically updated
to ensure that the latest information is available. Annual events, such
as Summer Celebration or Luminaria, will be pre-programmed to help
you plan in advance.

Just for the Health of It!
On Thursday, September 18, from 2:00-6:00 pm, Hanover Township, Cook County
Commissioner Timothy O. Schneider and the Victory Centre of Bartlett will sponsor
the 7th Annual “Just for the Health of It” community health and wellness expo. The expo will be held at
the Hanover Township Campus (250 S Route 59, Bartlett).
Recent Board Actions
Free and open to the public, residents will be able to take advantage of over a dozen free health screenings for bone density, veins, vision and more. Besides the free screenings, residents will also be able to
participate in raffles, get free chair massages and receive adjustments to their glasses. New this year is a
kid’s zone, complete with a petting zoo, photo booth, face painting, bouncy castle and more!

Police Department Promotions
The Village Board recently promoted three of its
own to command positions. Ed Valente was promoted to Deputy Police Chief, Daryl Syre was
promoted to Police Commander and Alex
VanDerLinden was promoted to Police Sergeant.

New AutoZone Store Approved
The Village Board adopted an ordinance
paving the way for a new AutoZone Store to
be built in Streamwood. The new store will be
located adjacent to the Sutton Park Shopping
Center on Irving Park Road, across from the
Fire Station. Construction will begin in the
fall. The new store hopes to open in 2015.

Pumpkinfest!
Hanover Township Oktoberfest
The Hanover Township Foundation will host its annual Oktoberfest
Fundraiser on Friday, October 3 from 5:00-9:00 pm. Attendees will be
treated to German food and live German music at the Bartlett Fire Barn
(218 S Main Street, Bartlett). Seasonal beverages will also be available
for purchase. Tickets are available for $30 per person or $50 per couple
in advance, or $35 per person the day of the event. The Foundation raises funds to assist in operating the
food pantry, support programs, and provide direct aid for qualifying residents. For questions, purchase of tickets, or sponsorships, please call the Astor Avenue Community Center at (630) 540-9085.
Gallon Donors Recognized
The Village Board recognized multi-gallon blood donors at its August 21 meeting. The Blood Commission
compiled the names of over 400 donors who have given at least one gallon over the past six years.
Eighteen (18) people were noted as having donated more than eight gallons!

Q: My water bill seems too high. Could there be a leak?
A. There may be. The Village will be happy to check for leaks at no cost. Some common
causes of high water bills are leaking faucets or toilets. Garden hoses with a small trickle of water can also
create large bills over time. Call the Public Works Department at (630) 736-3850 to request a check.

Budget Award
The Village of Streamwood has, once again,
been awarded the Distinguished Budget
Award by the Illinois Government Finance
Officers Association (IGFOA). The award
recognizes municipal budgets that are of the
highest quality, and reflect the best management and ethical practices. Less than
5% of Illinois municipalities receive this
prestigious award. This is the 25th consecutive
year that the Village has been recognized for
its outstanding efforts.
Join us in observing Fire Prevention Month on
Saturday, October 4, from 11:00 am-2:00 pm, at
Fire Station #32 (900 W Irving Park Road). There
will be displays and activities for both adults and
children. Bring the whole family to learn about fire
safety, spray a fire hose or tour the station.

Message From The Village President
Election season is fast approaching. Make sure
you are ready to exercise your right to vote!
The Village Board and staff will begin work
on our annual goals and objectives in
September. This exercise helps guide us
through the upcoming budget process. Goals
and objectives help us organize our priorities
and establish a roadmap for providing services in the most cost-effective way.
Voter Registration
In-person registration is available at Village Hall. Please bring proper identification
and proof of your current address to register. You may register on-line, get additional information, or check your current registration by visiting the Cook County
Election website at www.cookcountyclerk.com or calling (312) 603-0906.
The last day to register at Village Hall for the November 4, 2014
General Election will be Tuesday, October 7!
Vote by Mail
Do you have difficulty making it to the polling place? Will you be out of town
on Election Day? You can request a mail-in ballot! Simply visit
www.cookcountyclerk.com and download a mail ballot application.
Complete the application, sign and mail to Cook County. Mail ballots will be
delivered to your door in late-September.
Early Voting
Streamwood Village Hall will be an early voting location for the November 4
Election. Early voting will run from Monday, October 20 to Saturday,
November 1. Early voting will be available from 9:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday
through Saturday.
Nominating Petitions Available
The Consolidated Elections will be held on April 7, 2015. Nominating petitions
can be circulated starting on September 23, 2014. Three (3) Village Trustee
petitions will be on the ballot, along with other local, state and federal offices.
Petitions for Village Trustee must be filed with the Village Clerk between
December 15 and December 22, 2014.
Cultures of Our Community Event
The Community Relations Commission is
preparing for its annual “Cultures of Our
Community” celebration to be held on
Saturday, November 8, at Poplar Creek
Library, from 1:00-4:00 pm. This popular event features entertainment, educational displays and cultural artifacts from
some of the various countries of origin
of Streamwood’s residents. Residents
who would like to participate in
“Cultures of Our Community” should
contact Jean at (630) 736-3816.
The Board develops a list of key goals,
and then challenges staff to realize these
goals through implementation in the budget. Last year, the Board wanted to
improve our technological capacity,
improve communications with our residents, and reach out and support our President Billie D. Roth
existing business community. The recent update to our website is a tangible result
of how this process works. Our new mobile website provides technological
advances in access and functionality. The Shop Streamwood! app allows improved
communication with our residents. It also allows our business community a free
service to promote the best our community has to offer. I encourage you to download the Shop Streamwood! app and check it out for yourself.
Our local economy continues to improve. Work has begun on the new Toyota-Scion
dealership on Lake Street. Earthwork has started on the Spectrum Retirement
community on Schaumburg Road. The Board has just approved a new AutoZone
Store on Irving Park Road. These developments will enable us to continue to provide the highest quality services that our residents expect and deserve.
Rest assured that we continue to be prudent managers of your tax dollars. We
continue to work smarter and within our means. We are committed to keeping
Streamwood a great place to live, work and play.
On behalf of the Streamwood Chamber of Commerce, Park District and Village, we
would like to express our sincere appreciation to our many sponsors, food vendors,
and expo vendors, as well as all the hard work and effort of our numerous volunteers and staff, in making our 20th Annual Summer Celebration a “Roarin’ Good
Time”! It was wonderful to see so many people, of all ages, come out and enjoy a
weekend of family entertainment. Congratulations to the lucky winners of our raffle and contests, as well as to all the parade winners (see list of winners on page
5). Summer Celebration is truly a celebration of our community. Our festival
always offers something for everyone . . . fantastic carnival rides, games and
activities, great food, lively music and a fabulous parade!
School is back in session. Please be especially careful driving in our school zones.
Be aware of the change in speed limits when children are present. Be mindful of
the state law prohibiting talking or texting on cell phones. The Police Department
will be actively enforcing these regulations to ensure that our streets, and our children, remain safe.
Although summer is at its end, there are still many opportunities to enjoy the
weather and great outdoors. Explore the Community Health and Wellness Expo at
the Township, learn about fire safety at our Fire Open House, and take a hayride
at Pumpkinfest. We look forward to seeing you around town!

Providers
Our CPR for Healthcare Providers course is
designed for professionals such as nurses, doctors, paramedics, and nursing students. If you
need a CPR card for employment, this is the
class for you. Our next class date is September
13. The cost of this class is $50.00 for residents

The Fire Department offers
this course once a year to
teach the basic CPR and
First Aid skills to aid
adults, infants and children. There is no test to
pass or card issued. The

Smoke Alarms Save Lives
Smoke alarms prevent fire fatalities by giving you
and your family time to escape a
fire. Installing smoke alarms is one
of the best things you can do to
protect your life, your family and
your home! Here’s how to get started:
• Where Do I Put Them? Smoke alarms
should be on every level of your house and
within 15 feet of each bedroom.
• Are Smoke Alarms Hard to Install?
Hard-wired smoke alarms should be
installed by an electrician. Battery-powered
alarms are easy to install, but if you need
help you can call the Fire Department.
• How Do I Keep My Smoke Alarm
Working? Change your batteries every year.
Change your entire smoke alarm unit every 810 years. The Fire Department may have units
available if you cannot afford one.

GO GREEN – Energy Saving Tips
With fall upon us, we know that winter isn’t far away. Now is the perfect time to get your house ready for
winter. The Village’s Natural Resource Conservancy Commission offers these energy savings tips:
• Take advantage of natural heat by opening blinds or drapes on sun-exposed windows.
• Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans to push warmer air down.
• Close fireplace dampers when not in use.
• Plug leaks around windows and doors with caulking and weather-stripping.
• Make sure air ducts are insulated and sealed.
• Invest in a programmable thermostat to turn the heat down when you’re away.
• Replace leaky, single pane windows, doors and skylights.
A professional tune-up of your furnace is another way to help you save energy – and money!

Summer Celebration 2014
The 20th Anniversary of Summer Celebration was truly a “Roarin’ Good Time”! On
Friday, the Children’s Stage rocked with homegrown talent. Over 100 parade
units dazzled and delighted the crowds on Saturday. The Fire Department
drenched the brave on Sunday with its Fire Hose Spray. Crazy critter races were
a big hit all weekend long. Great music, delicious food, and all-around family
fun made Summer Celebration 2014 our best fest yet!

New Fall Brochure
The new fall program guide, full of
fun and exciting classes and special events, is available for pickup at any of the Park District’s facilities
and all throughout the Village. Stop by and pick up
your copy at Park Place Family Recreation Center,
the Community Center or at our Administration
office. Guides are also available at Village Hall, the Police Department, Chamber
of Commerce office, Hanover Township offices or Poplar Creek Library.
Building Block Preschool
Registration is available for children 2 ½ to 5 years of age for both morning and
afternoon classes. Classes are available 1, 2, 3 or 5 days a week depending on
your child’s age. Our school year runs from September 8 through May 16. Call Pat

the Wild Things Were
Find out what happened when Dr. Seuss (Ted Geisel) and Maurice Sendak sat down
for a discussion of children’s literature and illustration. Steven Brezzo was working

Gail Borden Public Library Foundation Book Sale
Come check out thousands of books for adults, teens and children for sale at the Main
Library. Books include coffee table books, gardening, cookbooks, military themed,
biographies, the latest fiction and more. The preview sale will be from 6:00-9:00 pm,
September 11 (with a $25 admission), followed by the general sale on Friday and
Saturday, September 12-13, from 9:00 am-6:00 pm, and Sunday, September 14, from
12:00 noon to 5:00 pm. Proceeds will help fund exhibits for the library and community.
5th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

Pumpkinfest
Circle the calendar for a day of fall family fun!
Pumpkinfest 2014 will be held on Saturday,
October 4, from 11:00 am -3:00 pm. Join us at
Hoosier Grove Park (700 W Irving Park Road)
for wood carving demonstrations, Moonwalk,
Pony Rides, Tractor Wagon Rides, Historical Museum Schoolhouse Spelling Bee,
Kiddie Run and more! Admittance to the Pumpkinfest is always free. Food and
refreshments are available for purchase.
Safely Trick-or-Treating
Get your child’s Halloween fun off to a safe start! Join us at Safety Town in
Hoosier Grove Park (700 W Irving Park Road) from 3:00-4:30 pm on Friday,
October 31. Treats will be passed out by local community agencies and business
owners. Safely trick-or-treating is for children ages 8 years old and younger. No
registration is necessary. In case of inclement weather, trick-or-treating will be
held inside the Hoosier Grove Barn.

The Children’s Department is challenging you to read 1000 books with your 3-5 year

Mary Poppins Sing-Along!
The Children’s Department will host a screening of Mary Poppins in the large
meeting room on Saturday, September 13 at 1:30 pm, and we invite you and your

Book Groups Get Back on Track
The Library has three different groups in order to match peoples’ busy schedules
and reading interest. It’s a great way to
meet people, learn about authors, and
consider books you might not pick up on
your own. Interested in reading the Orphan
Train, Animal Farm, or a Christmas mystery?
Groups are available in the mornings,
afternoons and evening. You can even get
involved online! Prior registration is not
required. Books are available one month prior at the Reader’s Advisory/Fiction

School District U-46 News
Dr. Torres to Serve as President of Illinois
Math and Science Academy
New Principal Named for Ridge Circle
Elementary School
Dr. José Torres resigned as U-46 Superintendent to serve as President of the Illinois
Math and Science Academy. Board President Donna Smith thanked Dr. Torres for his
six years of service to the 40,000 U-46 students, staff, and 11 communities. She noted
that the Board will determine how it will proceed with selecting a leader who can keep
the district moving in the right direction, ensure consistency in leadership, and provide
stability across the district.
School District U-46 announced that Janelle Raine will serve as
the new principal of Ridge Circle Elementary School. Ms. Raine
was among several individuals selected for administrative positions throughout the district for the 2014-2015 school year.
Streamwood Schools Achieve PBIS Success
Eight Streamwood schools were recognized by the State of Illinois for successful implementation of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports) for the 2013-2014
school year. PBIS is a proactive approach for creating and maintaining safe and effective school learning environments so that all students have the social and emotional
skills needed to achieve success at school and beyond. Over 700 Illinois schools participated in the recognition of PBIS implementation. Awards of platinum, gold, silver,
and bronze were given based on the number of PBIS tiers implemented and required
documentation to support successful academic and behavioral outcomes.
Ms. Raine began her teaching career as a middle school math teacher in Ames, Iowa
before joining U-46 as an algebra teacher at Larkin High School. After two years at Larkin,
Ms. Raine pursued various administrative positions outside the district before rejoining U46 as principal at Ridge Circle. Ms. Raine holds a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and a Master’s
in Educational Leadership from Iowa State University. She expects to complete her
Doctorate in Education in December 2014 from Northern Illinois University.
Safety First with School in Session
The Police Department wants to remind all drivers
to be safe in school zones. On a school day when
school children are present, the maximum speed in
a school zone is 20 miles per hour. Never pass a
school bus that has stopped to pick-up or drop-off
children. Remember that no one may use a cell
phone or text while operating a motor vehicle,
especially in a school speed zone, unless for
emergency purposes.
Platinum status was awarded to Glenbrook Elementary School, one of only 28 schools
in the state to receive such a distinction.
Gold status was awarded to Streamwood High School, Canton Middle School, Tefft
Middle School, Hanover Countryside Elementary School, Ridge Circle Elementary
School, and Sunnydale Elementary School.
