Wal-Mart Grand Re-opening
Recent Board Actions
Village President Roth and members of the Board of Trustees were
on hand for the grand re-opening of the Wal-Mart Super Center.
The 40,000 square foot addition features a full grocery line, deli,
and expanded garden center.
New Village Board Installed
At the May 5 Village Board meeting, former Trustee Jason Speer was
recognized for his years of service, and the newly elected Trustees
were sworn in to serve. Congratulations once again to Trustees Cecille,
Patterson, and Thon.
Streamwood High School Recognition
Park Commissioner Tom Keating accepts proclamation
from Trustee Mike Baumer.
Parks and Recreation Month
The Village Board presented a proclamation to the
Park District declaring June, 2011 Parks and
Recreation Month in the Village of Streamwood.
Park District Commissioner Tom Keating was on
hand to accept the proclamation, and thank the
Board for their intergovernmental support.
The Village Board recently recognized a number of outstanding
Streamwood High School student achievements. Students who won
in state and international DECA and HOSA competitions received
certificates from the Board. HOSA and DECA
are co-curricular organizations dedicated to
furthering student education in health and
management. Four Streamwood High School
Seniors were also recognized for being selected for the 2011 Village Board Art Purchase
Award. The artwork from this and past years
decorate Village Hall and the Police
Department. Congratulations!
On-line Bill Payment to Begin in Fall
The Village Board recently approved an agreement
with the Illinois Treasurer’s Office to participate in
their e-pay system. Work is underway to synchronize the systems to allow residents and businesses to pay water and sewer bills on-line. If the
system is a success, the Village will look to expand
this process to other payment forms.
Homeland Security Grant
The Village Board accepted a grant from the US
Department of Homeland Security to allow the
purchase of radio base stations. The grant
required no matching funds from the Village, and
will enable improved communication for all public
safety personnel.

2011 Student Government Day
Message From The Village President
Our children are our future. If our
recent experiences are any indication,
the future of Streamwood looks very
bright. At all ages and school levels, our
students are doing a great job and making us very proud.
Streamwood High School seniors took over the town on May 11 for Student
Government Day. Students worked with the Board and staff to get a hands-on
view of local government.
We recently finished our May DARE
graduations in the elementary schools.
I am always impressed with the heartfelt
essays the students write, and the power- President Roth with Student Government
ful messages they return to us about Day President Alena Lulchak
what they have learned. We would like thank our DARE Officers Steve Millar and
Matt Stastny for giving our students the tools they need to succeed.
Streamwood High School Seniors recently took over the Village, Township and Park
District for a day, when ninety students participated in Student Government Day. We
would like to thank George Rosner and the Civics Department for their enthusiastic
support for this program. We are delighted with the historic success of the
Streamwood High School Baseball team. Many team members have also received
scholarships to college, indicating good balance between athletic and academic success.
We are also proud to recognize the artistic talents of our high school students
through the annual Village Board Art Purchase Award. This year’s winners are
Rosa Aparicio, Katie Craft, Jocelynn Garcia, and Kimberly Keyser. Be sure
to take a look at the incredible talent of these and other students on your next trip to
Village Hall. Finally, at a recent Village Board meeting, we honored the 2011 DECA
and HOSA competition teams. Certificates were presented to students who received
top honors in state and international events. Congratulations, Sabres!
DARE Graduations
5th Graders from Oakhill, Ridge,
Hilltop, and Sunnydale recently completed their DARE programming,
where students learned life skills on
avoiding drugs, gangs, and peer
pressure. Congratulations!
After a snowy winter, and a cool, wet spring, it is nice to finally welcome summer. Summer traditionally starts with Memorial Day. On behalf of the Village
Board, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the members of the
Veterans Memorial Commission, including Lisa Poturalski, Eric Cameron,
Joe Marino, Everett Parpart, Richard Winterfeld, Kathryn Serbin, Bill
Lunsford, Dave Stoves, and Jim Sobeski. Thanks to all of the K-9 units who
helped us observe the 10th Anniversary of our War Dog Memorial. We also appreciate the assistance of numerous volunteers, for their tireless efforts and ongoing dedication in making our 20th Anniversary Memorial Day Observance unforgettable.
Summer is the perfect time to get out of the house, enjoy the weather and visit
with your neighbors. Be sure to join your friends and neighbors at Dolphin Park
for our annual fireworks display on Monday, July 4 at 9:15 pm.
Summer in Streamwood would not be complete without Summer Celebration! Come
and celebrate and “Support Our Local Businesses” while enjoying great food, good
friends and lively entertainment. The fun begins on Friday, July 29 through Sunday,
July 31. If you would like to be a part of the fun, consider volunteering at the festival! Contact us at (630) 736-3800 or by e-mail at mayor@streamwood.org.
For more information, visit us at www.streamwood.org.
We look forward to seeing you around town!
Sincerely,
Billie D. Roth, Village President

AARP
Driver
Safety
Program
Would you like to learn how to avoid driving hazards? Interested in safety discounts for your auto
insurance? On August 16 and 18, the
Streamwood Police Department will host an AARP
Driver Safety Program. Classes are scheduled
9:00 am – 1:00 pm and participants must attend
both days. The cost is $12 for members ($14 for
non-members).Call Commander Randy Hart, at
(630) 736-3706, to register.
CPR for
Healthcare
Providers
The Streamwood Fire
Department continues to
offer CPR classes for healthcare providers who
need certification for employment. The next classes are scheduled for July 9 and August 13. The
cost is $50 for residents ($65 for non-residents).
Contact the Fire Department at (630) 736-3650.
Summer Fun and Safety
Fireworks, barbecues, family, and friends are
great combinations for summer fun. They can
also be dangerous combinations if you’re not
careful. Be sure to keep children and animals
away from grills and fire pits. Never set off fireworks. Fireworks should only be set off by professionals. Sparkler injuries account for almost
20% of all firework injuries, and the majority of
these injuries are to small children. Use glow
sticks in place of sparklers. Keep your family
safe and enjoy the fun and flavors of summer.

Memorial Day 2011
Hard rains drove our 20th Anniversary Memorial Day
Ceremony inside Village Hall. Still, hundreds of people came to
honor and thank those who gave their lives for our country.
Go Green for a ‘Green‘ Lawn!
2011 Little City Book Fair
We all like a nice green lawn. What about a “green” lawn?
Fertilizers and weed killers impact our water quality and pollute
our lakes and streams. Our Natural Resource Conservancy
Commission offers these tips for a “greener” lawn:
• Don’t bag grass. Grass clippings add nitrogen and reduce the need for fertilizers.
• Keep it long. Mow no closer than 3 inches to shade weeds and reduce pesticide use.
• Use natural herbicides. Boiling water, soap solutions and vinegar can kill weeds on contact.
• Water well. Lawns need about one inch of water. Make a water gauge – a cup or container with a ruler
– and use a timer to figure out how long the sprinkler has to run to get to one inch.
• Water wisely. Don’t water in hot, dry weather when grass goes dormant; your grass will recover in
the fall.
• Consider a rain barrel. Collect water from roof and eave downspouts and use to water your lawn.
Bring friends and family to the 2011 Little City
Book Fair on August
19-21 at Harper
College (1200 W
Algonquin Road,
Palatine). Be one of
the first shoppers to
pick from the best
collection of over 100,000 new and gently used
books in nearly 60 subject categories. CDs, DVDs,
vinyl records, comic books and collectors books
will also be available. All proceeds benefit children and adults with autism, and other intellectual
and developmental disabilities. For more information, visit www.littlecity.org/bookfair
Using less fertilizers and herbicides also saves money. Go green, for a “green” lawn, and save some green!

Poplar Creek Receives Landmark Library Status
Library Journal unveiled its list of New
Landmark Libraries, and Poplar Creek
Public Library was named #1! Ten public libraries were chosen from around
the nation as inspirational and informative building projects for the Library
community. The magazine called the
Library “flexible, functional, and fabulous… the Library went all out, with its glass
beacon tower, colorful and soaring open spaces, a 100' LED panel light-wall, and the
duly named tech Green Zone… Together, these bold moves mean the Poplar Creek
renovation and expansion raises the bar on library design.” Congratulations!
Our Schools in the News
Denise Lockwald – Principal of the Year
Denise Lockwald, principal of Sunnydale Elementary
School, was honored recently for her selection as the
Principal of the Year for Hanover Township. She
earned this honor by being a champion for her students, a supporter of her families, and a friend to her
community.
Serving the Sunnydale community since 2004, her enthusiasm has not diminished
with time. Whenever possible she is in classrooms or involved in activities with her
students. She invites her students to visit during the day and read to her. She has
been spotted exercising with students to encourage their healthy life style, helping
the school to win 1st Place in the District’s Healthy Life Style and Wellness event.
Coffees, curriculum nights, picnics, multicultural nights, and other events designed
to encourage family involvement are also part of her mission. Always one to get
involved, she is the friendly waitress serving and bussing tables at PTO Family Dinner
Nights. Ms. Lockwald has supported the community with a cereal drive for Hanover
Township. To ensure “extras” for her school she has coordinated a formal dress sale
that raised funds for literacy needs – and an affordable dress for the shoppers.
In her spare time Ms. Lockwald sits on district committees to ensure the voice of
her school is heard. Sunnydale is indeed a busy, active school with a principal
determined to keep it that way. Congratulations!
Congratulations Sabres Baseball
The 2010-2011 Streamwood High School baseball team is truly one that will live
in history! The Sabres won the Upstate Eight Conference (UEC) River Division
Baseball Championship, for the first time in school history. The team shared the
crown with St. Charles East, after defeating Geneva with a come from behind victory. The team’s record of 30-6 also set a school record for victories. The team
continued on their historic march, extending their successful season by winning the
Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Hoffman Estates Regional Championship.
This was also the school’s first ever regional title. One week later, the team secured
their first sectional championship in the IHSA Class 4A Sectional Finals. The victory
advanced Streamwood to the Rockford River Hawks supersectional.
