We've got a good photo spread on both the California Festival of Speed and our Poppy Fields Tour in this issue. We are holding off on the Long Beach Grand Prix and American Le Mans Series races until June. There's just too much to fit into one issue. Our vice-president, Rick Mills, is responsible for two of our upcoming Tech Sessions: July 5 at EF1 Motorsports (ad on page 6) and August 2 at Aase Motors (ad on page 19). Both of these coincide with our monthly Breakfast Club which, we hope, makes it easier for our members to catch both. Have you heard about the Porsche Club's annual Porsche Escape? It is intended to be a less competitive, more relaxed version of the Porsche Parade. Unlike the Parades, there are virtually no competitive events. Instead, the focus is on tours, social activities and taking advantage of the local color. On August 18-21, Albuquerque will host this annual event. While the Parade is in late June in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Escape is much closer. Registration has just opened. Go to the PCA. org website for more information. You will probably need to register quickly if interested. This format is becoming very popular. There is still time to register for our May 17 Queen Mary Concours and, even if you aren't bringing a car to show or display, stop by and pay a visit. The 912 Registry will be out in force. Also, Wayne Dempsey from Pelican Parts has registered his Porsche 959 for the event. De Jur will be there with the GPX Goodie Store. There will be extra event shirts for sale in addition to her standard fare. We've received the ultimate compliment on several of our Goodie Store items... other regions wanting to know where we bought them and what the costs were. I have a VERY SPECIAL announcement to make. You have probably heard about the fabulous Sport Driving School that Porsche offers at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama. Circle Porsche has offered us a limited number of spots in the 2-day High Performance Driving Course at half the normal $3,195 price. The dates are November 18-19. We will have to arrange our own transportation and lodging, but this incredible opportunity will only cost about $1,600. Space is very limited. If you are interested, contact me ASAP. By the way, the name has changed to Porsche Sport Driving School. For general information, go to www.porschedriving.com/home. Our Day Away from Work event is coming up soon, and space is filling up. Our membership continues to grow thanks to efforts by our membership chair, Peter Ross and so many of our members who keep bringing them in. It's a fun time to be a GPX member. Sleazy Dog Construction See you at an event soon. On the Cover... De Jur Jones has taken home our annual Enthusiast of the Year award more than once. Seen here with "Glamourpuss," De Jur is one of our best recruiters. More than once she has shown up at our Breakfast Club with someone she saw driving a Porsche on the way, who just couldn't resist her charm. You will find her at most of our events behind a table of merchandise. Besides managing our Goodie Store, De Jur is also one of our Grid Queens at our Day Away from Work events. This May is the time for our annual driver education event at Buttonwillow Raceway rd Park. The date is Friday, May 23 . Each entrant should receive more than an hour of track time so sign up early to guarantee your entry. Although PCA members from other regions and other local clubs are allowed entry, we have reserved the first 80 entries from CCCR if postmarked or dated by April 28, 2008. We are doing this to encourage CCCR members to enter. After that date, entries are first come, first served. Total entries are limited to 100. Entry forms are included in this month’s Coastalaire. Clothing requirements are long sleeved cotton shirt and long pants, closed shoes and a SA95 or later Snell approved helmet. If you do not own a helmet, you can rent one from the track for $10/day. What is Driver’s Education and why is it useful? Driver Education is intended to afford participants the opportunity to develop car control skills in an organized manner and in a controlled and safe environment. The plan is for participants to accomplish this while they have a good time and learn from their experiences. The safety of participants and their cars is the number one concern. The goal is for each participant to become a more skilled and safe driver and to provide each with the opportunity to learn about their Porsche and the driving experience made possible by Porsche cars. There were more visitors than ever before, and plenty for them to do. In case you didn't hear, Porsche Cars North America set up an autocross course, sent out the new Cayenne GTS and a Cayman S, along with factory drivers. Then, anyone willing to make a $10 donation to Children's Hospital of Orange was allowed to drive these cars on the course, followed by a hot lap with a factory driver. Pretty cool! We also had record numbers taking advantage of Track Tours. We saw everything from a Ford F-450 to a fully dressed motorcycle to a Ferrari. For $20, you got to drive 1-1/2 laps (or more, depending on time restraints) on the same 2+ mile track the racers use. Of course, you were not allowed to drive at the same speeds but, this rare opportunity for a non-racer to actually drive on the track was enjoyed by 250 of you. California Speedway recently changed thier name to the Auto Club Speedway The racing was fabulous. Club Racers, Time Trialers and Yokohama Cup drivers gave everyone plenty of racing excitement over the three days. PCA President, Prescott Kelly did the MC honors. That man calls a good race. Vendor Row grew considerably from 2007. Our friends from Performance Products were out in force. I believe I heard something like 10,000 bottle of water with the Performance Products label on it. GPX Webmaster Jimmie Mitchell working the grid GPX member and Pelican Parts CEO, Wayne Dempsey showed up with his new acquisition, a Porsche 959. If I ever saw a kid in a candy store... And his young son, Sean, was enjoying himself as much as Wayne. Another change this year was the Special Interest Groups and Other Porsche Clubs that showed up. Special thanks to Suesan Way for organizing the 912 Registry, the San Marino Porsche Club, the Black Porsche Club, the Porsche 356 Club, PCars.US, RS Amereica Registry, 914Club.org, and the 993 Registry The California Festival of Speed is growing and turning more into a "festival" each year. Thanks to our organizers, Vince Knauf, Ron Mistak and Michael Dolphin and a huge team of volunteers for making it all work. Now, if we can only figure out a way to improve that track food. It was my only complaint from the weekend. No. Make that a cast of hundreds… er, on second thought, make it one person wearing a cast. On a glorious sunny April morning at the Monthly Breakfast Club Meeting held at Ricky and Ronnie’s CruiseIn Diner, that was me, the only guy sporting a cast that fully engulfed my right arm and hand. But that didn’t stop me from showing up at the meeting. It did however stop me from driving a Porsche, since I couldn’t shift gears. So I took photos, collected breakfast fees and ate while using one hand. As I arrived, I wondered what kind of showing we would have, since a large number of our members were at the California Festival of Speed. But, as always, we had quite a showing of Porsches, and a large number of our members chatting away, which was quite a sight to behold. In attendance for the first time was Rod Stone in his 1996 Midnight Blue 993 Twin Turbo. Henry Fella was driving a white 1959 356 that he purchased last June. Sherwin Levy brought his 3 week old purchase, a 2006 GT Silver C4S Tiptronic. The remarkable part about Sherwin’s Porsche was the silver exterior with a cocoa colored interior… a splendid color scheme. Frank and Roy Lock rolled to the meeting in a cherried out 1970 pink and black Dodge Challenger 340. The engine area was orange and pink, a very stunning car. Joe Bryant was also sporting a new Porsche, a 2006 Speed Yellow C4S, with black and yellow hand stitched interior. Other attendees were Bob Baddy, Perry Bradshaw, Lynette Bugg, Art Day, Richard Elliott, Albert Franco, Marty Friedman, Steve Glas, Lorenzo Gray, Jamie Gutierrez, Alan Hosea, Georgette Jankowski, Patricia Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Mike Kral, Jon LeCarner, Derrick Maglonzo and his friend Sara, Chet Malveaux, Steve Marino, David and Susan Moard, Marty Noonan, Peter Novak, Marty Petcoff, Anthony Scognamillo, Ron Shanon, Peter Vasquez (wow, three Peters at one meeting - we are taking over), Len Wagner and Rod Williams. One of the highlights of the morning was looking at the corner of the parking lot and seeing the Porsche 356 connection. This featured three gorgeous cars owned by Peter Novak, Mike Kral and Henry Fella that were parked side by side by side. Three classic vehicles owned by three classy members. Thanks for showing up guys. As usual, we had a total blast at the meeting and look forward to swapping Porsche stories with the rest of you next month. Hopefully, I’ll be cast free by then and back to typing with much more speed. 11 The Circuit PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA – ZONE 8 Concours Judging School & Concours Prep Saturday, May 24 9:00am to 2:00 pm Cost: $25.00 per person (includes lunch) — postmarked by May 15 ($40.00 if postmarked after May 15) Location: CIRCLEPORSCHE,1850OuterTrafficCircle,LongBeach,CA90815 Directions: I-405 to Lakewood Blvd in Long Beach, West to Circle’s new facility on OuterTrafficCircle, arightturnJUSTbeforeyouhittheTrafficCircle Reserve your place now by sending your check for $25.00 per person payable to PCA Zone 8 ($40.00 if postmarked after May 15). In spite of drizzly weather in town and wind in the desert, 18 cars showed up. The route was very well chosen. There were a lot of poppies and other flowers along the way. The Poppy Reserve is a spectacular place, lunch at the Rock Inn and Lake Hughes Trading Post was fun, and Steve was able to con the workers at Los Angeles Power Plant 1 to give us a guided tour. This place is an integral part of the history of water and LA. Built in 1911, it was the first to go on line bringing power to the city. Just down the road were the remnants of the collapsed St. Francis Dam, the 1927 disaster that killed hundreds in its wake. The dam's collapse was directly responsible for the professional demise of William Mulholland. The site is something to see. I picked up a piece of the old dam. It will go nicely at home alongside my piece of the Berlin wall. Many thanks to Steve Koch for designing and leading this great tour! We walked over to the paddock and, while admiring the equipment, the Chief Mechanic invited us in for a closer look. The rest of the crowd was held back with envy! The mechanic put Spencer in one of the Spyders to show him what its like to sit behind the wheel (Spencer's face says it all). After the training and seat time, Spencer was invited to hang out with the four team drivers. We were given autographed posters and team hats to remember Spencer's day as an honorary member of the Dyson Racing team. This could be a sign of things to come for Spencer, judging by the look on his face. This is Spencer with Patrick Long, Porsche factory driver with Penske RS Spyder #6. We had great fun at the American Le Mans Series running in Long Beach. 19 The Circuit Change for Life Member Roy Lock gave us a fundraising idea for ASUDEC (Africa's Sustainable Development Council) and Rick Mills provided the cans. We're asking you to take one of the cans home and collect your loose change. Then we'll collect the cans before the end of the year and tally it up. If you'd like more information about Change for Life or ASUDEC, or you would like us to get you one of the cans, contact Suesan at 619-992-4287 or SuesanWay@pobox.com PCA Orange Coast Region’s 38th Annual White Glove Concours Registration Form PORSCHE 356 CLUB presents NAME ________________________________________________Phone__________________________ ADDRESS_____________________________________________________________________________ Dana Point Concours d'Elegance 22 Annual CITY ______________________________________________ STATE_________ ZIP ______________ Lantern Bay Park, Dana Point, CA July 12th and 13th 2008 EMAIL _______________________________________________PCA REGION ___________________ The Porsche 356 Club is proud to present its annual Concours d'Elegance featuring the Porsche 356 automobile.
