The Paramount Ranch is an old movie set location located near Agoura in the Santa Monica Mountains. After passing through several private hands, it now a part of the National Park Service Santa Monica Mountain Recreational Area. http://www.nps.gov/samo/planyourvisit/paramountranch.htm We will meet on Coastline Drive in Malibu, Coastline is 3/4 of a mile north of Sunset Blvd on Pacific Coast Highway. Turn right on Coastline and pull off the road just past the first street on the right (Surfview). We will depart at 9:00 am sharp, we will take a fun drive through the Santa Monica Mountains enroute to the Ranch, There is a nice covered area where we will enjoy our picnic lunches. The 2 mile road course was only operated for two years, 1956-57. It was narrow and twisting with ups and downs, perfect for Porsches! Some portions of the track can still be found. We will have the opportunity to walk parts of it. Marty Goldsmith, who organized this tour, worked at all five of the race weekends held there. Marty and Ranger Tom Young will give us a tour and history lesson about the track and sports car racing as it was at that time. We will try to pick our way around the course on foot, trying to identify some of its outstanding features (including an underpass/tunnel). We will also see a movie about the Ranch as a motion picture set. We had record numbers of members join each other in Monterey for this year’s Porsche Parade along with 2400 other club members from all other North America. July starts off with a bang for Grand Prix Region members. The first thing is a change of venue for our monthly Breakfast Club Meetings to Glory Days Beach Side Grill on July 5. It's just a couple of blocks down Pacific Coast Highway in Seal Beach. You will notice that there are a lot of event flyers for upcoming GPX events in this issue of The Circuit. The variety is very impressive. If you don't see something that sparks your interest, please let us know. More than likely we can figure something out for a future event. If you have any questions or ideas please contact me at Suesan@pobox.com In the Fall we've got two performance driving events on the calendar, on at Streets of Willow and the other at the infield course at the California Speedway in Fontana. There are more events in the cooker, including a couple of Tech Sessions. As soon as we have the details worked out we'll let you know about them. Pencil in December 6 for our annual Holiday Party, most like at the Long Beach Yacht Club (which we love). Remember to join our monthly breakfast on the first Saturday of each month at the Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach – See ad in this issue Starting with a tour of the historic Paramount Ranch, this is a great opportunity to see the remnants left of the original 1950 race track, as well as some old movie sets. UTOCROSS 2014 CCCR -PCA presents On August 2nd GPX will be having a summertime party starting right after our Breakfast Club. All information is on Motorsportreg.com and the cost is on the region (that is, GPX is paying for food and beverages, non alcoholic. Bring your own beer or wine). Dress is casual and the starting time is 12 noon – come compete in Play Station 2 racing and watch racing movies in the home theater. Or just hang around by the pool with Porsche friends. August 17th is a tour through the Santa Monica Mountains to the Ojai Valley. We will lunch at the Ojai Valley Inn. This will be a very scenic, fun tour. Registration is open on MotorsportReg.com. September 9th, after the Breakfast Club, we are having our First Annual Golf Outing. We're starting with a 9-hole course and can accommodate the first 20 people. Registration is open. Please go to http://pcagpx.motorsportreg.com to register for all of the above events Keep an eye out in the Coastalaire for Registration dates 6 Teststrecke Porsche VII @ Santa Maria Airport -------- Saturday July 26 teststrecke porsche VII - go to Motorsportsreg.com for more details - registration is open on Motorsportsreg.com - receive 1 chance to win a new helmet PorschE santa barbara In 2014 is a major sponsor for this event July 2014 Skip Carter We kept trying to decide if we should print a July issue of the Circuit. Getting ready for Parade (let alone our own GPX events), 10 days in Monterey (more on Parade next month)... Oh yeah, and then there's that little thing called "work", often referred to as "a job." We have so many events coming up, we really wanted to get all of the flyers out to you, so here is the July Circuit. It's a few pages shorter (and a bit late), but here it is. One thing I learned from this accident — with newer Porsches it is VERY IMPORTANT to take them to a Porsche official body repair shop. There is actually a list of them online. There are only two in San Diego County. My insurance company argued with them about the necessity to rent the proper gigs for the repair rack, but the great thing about this shop, I did not need to get in the middle. I will be reprinting an article about why this is important in the next month or two. We have had the Cayenne back for two weeks now, and it is like brand new. I think I'll take the opportunity to put that clear bra on the front that I didn't want to spring for 7 months ago. I was fortunate to be accepted to drive the 2-day DE event at Laguna Seca, which fell on the last weekend of Parade (good timing. This allowed many from around the country to drive this fabulous, world class track). Given our new Cayenne Diesel, I was set to tow the 944 Spec car with us. UNFORTUNATELY, a month before leaving an oncoming driver ran a red light as I was making a left turn onto a freeway. I was about 6" short of stopping in time, which was enough to generate about $10k of repair work and meant that the Cayenne would not be available to tow to Parade. FORTUNATELY, my neighbor has an F-250 Heavy Duty truck that he lent us. This worked out really great (OK, the mileage isn't quite the same, and Suesan noted that there was a significant different in ride comfort). I was able to get the 944 there and back, had an absolute blast driving that track (it is the best I've ever been on), and I was still able to participate in the Cayenne Off Road Tour, which Suesan opted out of (did I mention the relatively stiff F-250 suspension?). Sleazy Dog Construction On the Cover... Jimmie Mitchel took this photo of Bob Baddy & Junko Kamei cutting their cake at our June Breakfast meeting. Bob and Junko are moving to Ohio, and we gave them a very good sendoff. Suesan and I (and several others) were already at the Porsche Parade in Monterey (our volunteer jobs there require us to arrive a few days early). The second significant thing about this meeting was that is was our last one at the Tilted Kilt. There are several reasons why we decided to relocate Breakfast Club to Glory Days, which is on PCH just a few blocks south in Seal Beach, but the economics didn't make sense anymore. They treated us very well and we always felt welcome, and we want to thank everyone there for taking good care of us. Marty Go Cart (with Rennison Sherrett's spect I see from the photos that long time members Mickey and Phyllis McGihon came to the meeting. Sorry I missed you both. Come check out Glory Days!!! However, the most significant thing is that our long time Goodie Store Chairs, Bob Baddy and Junko Kamei, have taken a job opportunity and are relocating to Ohio. You can see from the photos that Bob and Junko are very much appreciated. Colleen Stein make them a special GPX blanket (we hear the winters are much colder in Ohio). They brought back the Enthusiast of the Year award they received at our most recent Holiday Party (easier to return it now instead of from Ohio in December). We wish them the best of luck and hope they return soon. GPX blanket made by Colleen Stein Other than that, since I wasn't actually there, it appears from the photos that everyone had a good time, there was a wonderful assortment of Porsches (and other makes) in the parking lot, and lots of smiles on people's faces. It is not a book for the casual reader. In fact, it is not a book to read at all. Only the introduction by Karl Ludvigsen is pure text, the remainder of the book is page after page of full-page photographs and illustrations, with comprehensive captions. The captions tell the story of the cars and the racing seasons, both in Europe and the USA. Included are on-track shots, cutaway drawings, factory and work shop photos, and blueprints. Somewhat off-putting to modern readers, most of the pictures are all black & white, partly as a function of the era in which they were taken, and partly to keep the cost of a book with 121 full-page illustrations within reason, Photos on the front and back covers are, however, in color. The introduction by Karl Ludvigsen makes clear that the World Endurance Championship Group C rules adopted for 1982ff, were newly focused on fuel economy as the primary constraint on performance. These rules are clearly a forerunner of the fuel economy constraints imposed for the 2014 season. Porsche thrived under the rules introduced in 1982, the 956 cars dominating European championships, including seven consecutive Le Mans wins. The iconic Rothmans and Jägermeister cars were Group C cars. The Porsche 956 was designed by Norbert Singer and built by Porsche in 1982 for the World Sportscar Championship. It was later upgraded to the 956B in 1984. Driven by Stefan Bellof in 1983, this car holds the all-time record for the fastest vehicle ever to lap the famed Nürburgring, completing the 20.81 km (12.93 mi) circuit in 6:11.13. 20 The 956 was a very successful car, sweeping the top three places in its first Le Mans appearance. The car features a chassis made of an aluminum monocoque (the first for Porsche) helping to get the car down to the 800 kg (1,764 lb) weight minimum in Group C. The very first dual clutch gearbox was also designed for the 956, mated to a traditional 5-speed manual. The book describes how the 956s were morphed into the 962s (to meet IMSA safety regulations), which were then very successful in American races. PORSCHE 956 & 962 is oriented toward the dedicated 956/962 enthusiast. Ludvigsen's introduction sets the stage on which the 956s and 962s performed. Examination of the pictures allows identification of the configuration and make-up of the performers. Though some of the pictures are truly pretty and presented as proofs for the purchase of mounted prints (see page 128 for ordering details), the real message comes from studying the evolution of features illustrated. If you ever had a thing for the 956/962 cars, you will find many pictures (car portraits in context) to drool over in this book. PORSCHE 956 & 962 has 128, 8-1/2 x 10 inch pages. It should be available for $32.95 from your favorite book seller (ask for it), or from http://www.motorbooks.com. July 2014 21 The Circuit CLASSIFIED ADS 9X4 Liquidation '87 924S 5-Spd Coupe.
