ADELAIDE CATHEDRAL PARISH
DO NOT BE AFRAID!!
To be troubled and afraid: we
have all had such feelings and
can recall those experiences,
some more than others. As
babies our reactions to our fears signal to our parents
that we need their love and assistance.
John recalls Jesus' words to his disciples "do not let
your hearts be troubled". At that time he knew the
likelihood of his crucifixion so it was not just a human
response, but a personal and caring response that Jesus
offered. Is our belief in the presence of Jesus enough
for us to allow him to "take some of the heat" from the
difficulties we face? Or when our call for help is not
answered, do we easily blame Jesus?
We often get on with life, because we find it too hard
to face our issues. So when our "troubled hearts" are
ignored - not by Jesus but by our own behaviour - the
fear is buried deeper and often our anger rises! This is
the personal challenge for us all.
In parish life today we can be very troubled by the
difficulties the church faces. So the gospel of today
encourages us to open our hearts to these concerns we
experience in our communities. For example, some of
us fear for the demise of long standing communities,
others the churches they built, others the lack of
interest among the younger generations, or the
shortage of priests....
or the
issues that are
frequently raised in the media.
Through his promise of the "advocate" to be with
us, our parish can reveal the presence of Jesus in the
peace we are able to bring to others when we open our
hearts to to them. At mass we recall Jesus' words "my
peace I give you" as we prepare for Holy Communion.
In the heart of Christ,

What Catholics believe ...
the Nicene Creed summarizing all that Jesus taught and
commanded had its origins in 325 AD in times of great
change with upheavals similar to those of our own
time.
So in this 21st century, Benedict XIV with deep concern
to ensure the unity of the People of God, initiated the
‘Year of Faith’ 2012-2013. As Catholics we are
encouraged to re-examine the core of our FAITH
contained in the Creed.
What are creeds?
Creeds are brief formulas of faith that make it possible
for all believers to make a common profession.
The early Christian Apostles’ Creed has a special
dignity, because it is thought to be a summary of the
faith of the Apostles. The Nicene Creed is highly
esteemed because it resulted from the great councils
of the Church when Christendom was still undivided
[Nicaea, 325; Constantinople, 381] and is to this day
the common basis for the Christian in the East and the
West.
#26 in YOUCAT, the official Catechism for World Youth Day
If you would like to read the full resource for the Holy
Father’s request for a focus on the Creed in this Year of
Grace and Faith please go to http://bit.ly/1052kmP or you

Gracious God,
Gospel Reflection
‘Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid’. What
aspects of life frighten you?
How do you experience the ‘peace the world cannot
give’?
Did you Know?
The meaning of the word ‘advocate’ is one who is
summoned to help another.
www.yearofgrace.catholic.org.au
You have blessed this ancient land
with many gifts, especially its people.
We thank you for the Year of Grace,
a time to start afresh from Christ.
You invite us to contemplate the face of Jesus your Son,
that we may experience a new wave of grace,
and that the light of Christ may burn more brightly in
our lives.
Another term commonly used for the Holy Spirit is
Paraclete which comes from a Greek term meaning
‘called to the side of’ and so has the same meaning
as ‘advocate’.
Attune our hearts and minds
to the presence of your Holy Spirit,
that our Church may be transformed,
our relationships be healed,
and our nation grow in compassion and justice.
In the Hebrew Scriptures, peace was one of the
distinguishing marks of the time of the Messiah.
Jesus’ gift of peace confirms that he is the longed for
Messiah.
With the intercession of St Mary MacKillop,
who showed us new ways of living the Gospel,
we make our prayer
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

6 Sunday of Easter
“…do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” (John
14:27)
When we let the daily pressures of life trouble us, we
begin to believe that we are responsible for taking care
of everything. This causes us to frantically cling to our
time and treasure. Yet, Jesus tells us not to be troubled
or afraid. Take a deep breath, pray and place your trust
in God. When you do, you will be a better steward of all
that God has placed in your care.
Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us

Cathedral Parish Infant Baptism Program
Welcome & Blessing
The people of God, that is the Church, made present in the
local community, has an important part to play in the baptism
of both children and adults.
Before and after the celebration of the sacrament, the child
has a right to the love and help of the community … the
community exercises its duty when it expresses its assent
together with the celebrant after the profession of faith by
the parents and godparents. In this way it is clear that the
faith in which the children are baptised is not the private
possession of the individual family, but it is the common
treasure of the whole Church of Christ.
Please join us in welcoming and praying for the following
infants and their families as they prepare for their baptism:

PRAYER FOR FAMILIES
Lord Jesus,
We pray that these families may always know the power of
your presence in their lives.
As they bring their children to be baptised into this
community may they experience a sense of belonging and
know of our prayers and support, so that together we may all
help to make you present to our world. Amen.

CATHEDRAL CONFERENCE: MEMBERS WANTED
Those who stand up for the poor are not seen by the
‘world’ because they “reveal the golden thread that is
the revelation of God from below – and that is not an
easy glory to see”. Through the poor we come closer to
seeing the way God sees. Let us not be quick to judge
and put labels on individuals and groups. Rather, seek
the mind of Christ in all things and show charity, mercy,
compassion and love. Pray constantly, especially for
more volunteers for this vital, unseen ministry. For more
information about the Cathedral Conference of the St.
Vincent de Paul Society, contact Con Pelekani (0438-868

Diocesan Presbytery Fund: The funds we give in the first

Archdiocese. This weekend, being the final weekend for the
appeal, there will be a presenter to speak on the purpose of
the Fund, the current shortfall of funds to continue to care for
our priests and deacons now and in the future.
Week 3 – Revision (from last weekend)
Immediately before the first collection over the last two
weekends we have highlighted the importance of adequately
supporting our Diocesan clergy. Our Priests and Deacons rely
totally on the first collection for their material needs and
sustenance. Their workload is increasing and in our fastgrowing secular society demand for the services provided by
the Catholic Church and its clergy has never been greater – for
example health care, education, counselling, welfare services.
Our Priests and Deacons are at the heart of the effective
delivery of these services and have been for many generations
through their dedicated and generous ministry.
