Of special significance was a piping seminar with Bruce Gandy during the day April 9, followed by two competitions in the evening. The first competition was the Canadian Content Competition which required the participants to play a medley consisting of purely Canadian content. The second competition was the Glengarry Cup Open MSR, which was of a more traditional nature, but nonetheless, of very high calibre. Andrew Hayes won the Glengarry Cup Open MSR contest followed by Tom Brown in Second and Will Ridley in third place. The Canadian Content Competition was won by MacGregor van de Ven, followed by Ross Davison in second place and Chris Dodson in third place. The performances were of very high standard and played to a standing room only audience. Thanks to the competitors and Bruce Gandy for a wonderful evening. April 16 followed up with the Spring Fling in Smiths Falls, the first competition of the season. See the page 8 for results. “Name the Newsletter” Contest! The new newsletter needs a new name. MAY 5, 2011 NATIONAL TARTAN DAY The Sons of Scotland annual National Tartan Day Celebrations took place on Sunday, April 10 on Parliament Hill on a beautiful warm day. In its 5th year, this event celebrates the heritage and traditions of our work and the tartans worn, marks the first time we've had an official Canadian Tartan and Tartan Day itself, and welcomes people from all over to take part. This year the band welcomed players from as far away as Montreal, and dancers from the MacCulloch and Ingleneuk Dance Schools, various highland dancers from schools all over our region, and the Ar N-Oran Gaelic Choir took part as well. We had a record number of different tartans on display - 70 altogether, and a great after party was held at D'arcy McGee's Irish Pub. A reporter from Canadian Geographic was on hand to do a story about the day and it is posted on their blog at www.canadiangeographic.ca We hope that you plan to join us next year on April 8 to mark National Tartan Day.
