Storage: All Raziol lubricants must not be fouled during transport and storage with dirt, water and other substances. When stored, intense heating (e.g. owing to sunlight) or the action of frost should be avoided. Therefore, the storage temperature must be between 5 – 40 °C (frost-free). The max. shelf life of a water soluble coolant-lubricant is typically 1 year. Preparation: The water for mixing has to be clean, of drinking water quality and, if possible, of medium hardness. You can obtain more information on the water quality from your local water supplier. Avoid excessively low water temperatures. The given concentrations should not be excessively overshot or under-shot, since otherwise, there is a danger of corrosion or foam formation. Slowly add the concentrate to the mix of water prepared. The preparation can only be used after an adequate mixing time. We would recommend that you use an automatic dosing system. • 27 • www.raziol.com Lubricants for Metalworking Chlorine free, water soluble lubricants s for the BG-specification Please take note of te. emulsion care. und on our Websi fo be n ca is th on Information der Infothek. www.drylub.de un Colour Viscosity at 40°C [mm²/s] Applications BZK II ambercoloured approx. 50 zinc-coated sheet metals; reliable protection from white rust; deep-drawing and profile rolling; water mixing ratio: 10 to 30 % BZK ST ambercoloured approx. 46 steel; very good corrosion protection deep-drawing and profile rolling; water mixing ratio: 5 to 30 % ECLF 100 N ambercoloured 70 steel, aluminium, rust-free sheet metals; large-area deep-drawing parts; press and bending jobs; Mixing ratio with water: 5 to 20 % yellow 100 Steel, yellow metals, aluminium; ester based, synthetic special purpose lubricant; also suitable for cutting jobs; water mixing ratio: 5 to 10 % Similar to water Ready-to-use emulsion with precipitation-stable teflon additive; extremely high-performance, for difficult deployments like pipe-bending , but also very well suited as a substitute for evaporating stamping and drawing oils; pH-value approx. 7 (neutral range!) ADDITIVE Active substances which are added to the lubricants and which provide them with properties which they do not inherently have. ALIPHATES Consist of straight hydrocarbons or branched saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. Saturated aliphates are also called paraffins. ALKENES See Olefins ALLOYED LUBRICANTS Lubricant which, by adding additives to the base oil, provides the base oil with certain additional properties. ANALYSIS DATA Data obtained in the laboratory on the basis of chemical and physical examinations of lubricants. AROMATIC COMPOUNDS Hydrocarbon compounds with ring-shaped, but unsaturated molecular structure. The name is based on the aromatic scent of these compounds. The best known compound of this group is benzene. They are characterised by a bad viscosity-temperature behaviour and an adverse influence on the oxidative stability as well as on sealants. • 50 • Lubricant Lexicon B as in bacterial invasion BACTERIAL INVASION Water-miscible lubricants provide a good breeding ground for bacteria and therefore require protection against bacteria in order to prevent the emulsion from getting destroyed. Signs of bacterial invasion: offensive smell, corrosion, pH value decrease. BARREL International measure of capacity in the mineral oil industry, 1 barrel = 42 US gallons = 159 litres BASE OIL Base oil proportion of an additivated (alloyed) lubricating oil and/or oil proportion in case of lubricating greases. BIODEGRADABILITY Biodegradability is the possibility that lubricants contained in the water and in the soil can be converted into CO2 and water in the ideal case. BLENDING Mixing of lubricants made of base oil and additivation. BOUNDARY LUBRICATION If, in the presence of lubricants, contact occurs here and there between surfaces gliding on top of one another, this act is known as boundary lubrication. Wear occurs in this case. • 51 • www.raziol.com Lubricant Lexicon C as in centipoise CENTIPOISE Measurement unit of the dynamic viscosity 1 cP = 1 mPa s CENTISTOKES Measurement unit of the kinematic viscosity 1 cSt = 1 mm²/s COMBUSTION POINT Lowest temperature, in relation to the normal pressure, at which the vapours of an evenly heated liquid are ignited after their ignition by means of an ignition source, and continue to burn after removing the ignition source. COOLING LUBRICANT / METALWORKING LUBRICANT Lubricant for cooling and lubricating metallic materials during cutting and forming processes. A distinction is made between water-miscible cooling lubricants and non-water-miscible cooling lubricants (Neatoil). CRUDE OIL Unprocessed, degased and dehydrated petroleum. • 52 • Lubricant Lexicon D as in danger class DANGER CLASS Until 2002, classification of flammable liquids according to the flash point, in Class A (not water-miscible, flash point not above 100°C) and Class B (water-miscible, flash point below 21°C). Currently, this classification is replaced with the technical regulations on flammable liquids (German abbr. TRbF). DENSITY The density of a lubricant is the quotient of its mass m divided by its volume V at a particular temperature. The reference temperature is normally 15 °C. Lubricants are characterised by densities in the range between approx. 0.75 and 0.95 g/cm³. DIN STANDARDS German Industry Standards which have been established by associations and committees of the German industry and which are recognised as guidelines by the private industry and the legislators. The requirements and test methods regarding lubricants have been defined in DIN standards, as well. DYNAMIC VISCOSITY Viscosity is a measure for the tenacity of a lubricant. The greater the viscosity, the tougher (more viscous) the lubricant. Particles of viscous liquids are more strongly bound together and are therefore less mobile; this is also known as internal friction. Unit: N x s /m² 1 N x s /m² = 1 Pa x s = 10 poise = 1000 cP • 53 • www.raziol.com Lubricant Lexicon E as in emulsifier EMULSIFIER Additive which allows the temporary bond between oil and water. EMULSIFIABILITY Property of a lubricant which is caused by additives (emulsifiers) and which allows the lubricant to form an emulsion when water is added. EMULSION Mixture of insoluble substances; in the case of lubricants, it is mostly formed on the basis of water with the addition of emulsifiers. ESTER Reaction product (synthesis product) consisting of fatty acids and fatty alcohols, under separation of water. Esters are used as synthetic basic liquids, amongst other things. EXTREME PRESSURE (EP) ADDITIVE The oldest EP additive is pure sulphur. EP/AW additives are surfactants and can, in the polar group, contain different combinations of the elements zinc, phosphorus and sulphur, amongst other things. The best known representative of this kind is zinc dithiophosphate - ZDTP which additionally acts as anti-aging protection and corrosion protection additive. • 54 • Lubricant Lexicon F as in flash point FLASH POINT The determination is used for the evaluation of the risk potential of a flammable liquid and influences transport and storage. The flash point is the temperature at which a flammable liquid, for the first time, produces such an amount of flammable gases so that these gases can be ignited by an ignition source. FLUID FRICTION If a lubricant causes friction surfaces gliding on top of one another to be separated from each other in a non-contact manner, this act is known as fluid friction. No wear occurs in this case. FREE SULPHUR / ACTIVE SULPHUR See Active sulphur FRICTION Friction is the force that opposes the relative motion or tendency of such motion of two surfaces in contact. The rougher the contact surfaces of the objects, the greater the acting forces. Wear and heat is generated in this way. A liquid between the contact surfaces creates a smoothing effect. This effect is called lubrication and the liquid separating layer is called lubricant. • 55 • www.raziol.com Lubricant Lexicon G as in gallon GALLON Measure of capacity Engl. gallon = 4.54 litres American gallon= 3.79 litres H as in Herbert test HERBERT TEST Also called chip test. Corrosion test of water-mixed lubricants. The test procedures and test conditions are defined in DIN 51360 T1 and T2. HYDROCARBONS Designation for chemical compounds which mainly consist of the elements carbon C and hydrogen H. Hydrocarbons are the main components of petroleum. I as in ignition temperature IGNITION TEMPERATURE The ignition point (also called ignition temperature or self-ignition point) is the temperature to which a material must be heated so that a flammable substance (solid matter, liquid or their vapours or gases) ignites spontaneously, in the presence of atmospheric oxygen and without ignition sparks, only due to its heating, i.e. without ignition source, in the presence of oxygen. The ignition temperature varies from material to material. An exothermal oxidation reaction is responsible for this process. INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY Atoms of certain organic molecular groups absorb the radiation energy of the infrared light by their natural oscillations. This can be represented graphically in a spectrum. • 56 • Lubricant Lexicon K as in kinematic viscosity KINEMATIC VISCOSITY This is the ratio between the dynamic viscosity and the density of a lubricant. Unit: mm²/s 1mm²/s = 1 cSt Centistokes L as in lanolin LANOLIN See wool fat. LUBRICANTS Lubricants (lubrication solvents) are used for lubrication and cause a reduction in friction and wear. This effect is caused by a liquid separating layer which is built up between the contact surfaces of the moving parts. In principle, all lubricants consist of one or several basic liquids and other performance-enhancing additives. LUBRICITY Characterises the load capacity of the lubricating film of a lubricant. The lubricity can be enhanced by adding EP additives. Tool and workpiece material as well as pressure, temperatur and viscosity considerably influence the lubricity. • 57 • www.raziol.com Lubricant Lexicon M as in metalworking lubricant METALWORKING LUBRICANT See Cooling lubricant. MINERAL OIL Mineral oils are produced by distilling and refining the raw material, petroleum. Depending on the area of origin of the petroleum and the subsequent processing methods, mineral oils can differ significantly from one another, despite the same viscosity. MONOMERS These are the basic components of polymers. Monomers are molecules which are characterised by a low molecular weight (equally short C – chain) and high reactivity. If these monomers form molecular chains or net-shaped crosslinked structures, these are called polymers. N as in naphthenes NAPHTHENES Ring-shaped, saturated hydrocarbons which are also called cycloalkanes or cycloparaffins. O as in olefins OLEFINS Olefins are also called alkenes. Unsaturated hydrocarbon chain with at least one double bond between two carbon atoms. • 58 • Lubricant Lexicon P as in petroleum PETROLEUM Mixture from many different hydrocarbons which can be found in nature. The composition and therefore the properties of the petroleum differ depending on the location of the oilfield where the oil is extracted. Petroleum still contains contaminations such as dirt, water and gases. pH VALUE Measure for the hydrogen ion concentration in aqueous solutions (e.g. emulsions). pH 1 - 6 = acidic pH 7 = neutral pH 8 - 14 = alkaline POLYMERS A chain or net-shaped crosslinked structure of normally equal molecules (monomers). Polymers can be characterised by different chain lengths, different molecular weights and therefore different physical properties, even if the basis (monomer) is the same one. R as in rust RUST Corrosion on the surfaces of steel and iron (hydrated ferric oxide) which is formed by the simultaneous action of oxygen and moisture. • 59 • www.raziol.com Lubricant Lexicon S as in shear stability SHEAR STABILITY Long-chain / branched molecules (e.g. polymeric additives) incorporated in lubricants which, in case of strong mechanical stress, may break (shear) and cause the viscosity to decrease. SOLID LUBRICANTS Substances suspended in or directly applied to lubricants, e.g. Teflon. They are used for the lubrication under extreme conditions. SYNTHETIC OILS If lubricants are not manufactured in common distilling or refining processes, but in complex chemical processes (synthesis), these products are called synthetic oils. Fatty acid esters are, for example, synthesised from fatty alcohol and fatty acid, under separation of water. Synthetic oils have special properties; they are not only used as base oil but they are also used as additives. T as in tenacity TENACITY See Viscosity. THIXOTROPY This is a phenomenon of gelatinous, viscous substances which can be liquefied by mechanical action (e.g. stirring) and which, after a certain rest period, pass into the gelatinous condition again. This phenomenon is caused by the filamentous or net-like structures which tear up during the mechanical action and which grow together in the resting state again. • 60 • Lubricant Lexicon V as in viscosity VISCOSITY The tenacity of liquids is described by their viscosity. It is defined by the frictional resistance which a liquid opposes its deformation by compression stress or shearing stress. The dynamic viscosity is indicated in milli Pascal seconds (mPas). An older unit which, however, is still very common is poise (or centipoise with 1 cP = 1 mPas). The viscosity strongly depends on the temperature. The viscosity increases as the temperature drops, and the viscosity decreases as the temperature rises. For this reason, any viscosity data must always be accompanied by measuring temperature data. See also: CENTIPOISE CENTISTOKES DYNAMIC VISCOSITY KINEMATIC VISCOSITY VISCOSITY INDEX (VI) Characterises the viscosity-temperature behaviour of a lubricant. It is an empirical figure which is determined by pure calculation and which indicates the influence of any temperature change on the viscosity of a lubricant. A distinction is made between VI (for values from 0 to 100) and VIE (for values from 100 and above) The greater the numerical value of VI / VIE, the lower the viscosity decrease of a lubricant in case of a temperature increase. VI can be increased by adding VI enhancers. However, in the majority of cases, they are subject to shear. VISCOSITY - TEMPERATURE - CURVE ((VT - CURVE) Graphic presentation of the viscosity depending on the temperature. In order to represent a VT - curve as a straight line, a special graphical sheet is used. On the basis of the straight line entered there, it is possible to read out the viscosities at different temperatures. • 61 • www.raziol.com Lubricant Lexicon W as in waste oil WASTE OIL Used lubricant which has become unfit for the further use as lubricant, due to additive deterioration, pollution etc. during its use.
