2002-03 Season Preview
After going 23-7 and 14-4 to produce one of NCAA Division II’s
best turnarounds of the season, expectations are very high for
head Coach Ron McHenry and the Lady Blues this season.
Washburn, which finished in second place for its highest finish
in the MIAA since 1994-95 and earned its first postseason trip
since that same season, enters the 2002-03 campaign in a different role for the first time since the early 1990s.
This season with four starters returning — including MIAA MVP
Crystal Walker and first team All-MIAA pick Carissa Goeglein —
the Lady Blues are No. 16 in the nation preseason and one of the
favorites to challenge for an MIAA title.
“We have a great conference this year and I think their are a
number of teams that can win the league and the regional,” said
McHenry, who is now in his third season at the helm. “Every year
we’ve got to get better just to stay where we’re at in the league.”
Along with Walker and Goeglein, Washburn returns third-year
starters at guard in Bethany McGraw and Kristy Chapman and
four others who were big contributors from last season’s squad.
Returners
The 2002-03 Lady Blues return 79 percent of their scoring from
and 74 percent of their rebounding from last season’s 23-7 regional qualifying squad. In all, four starters and eight letterwinners are
back to help the Lady Blues contend for their first conference title
since 1992-93.
“We’ve got a good senior layden group that has the experience
from last season to fall back on,” said McHenry. “We’ve got four
senior starter who have been through this league and know what
to expect. We know this confererence will be very tough.”
Crystal Walker, a preseason All-American from Osawatomie,
Kan., enters her senior season in 21st place on the all-time
Washburn career scoring charts with 783 points after scoring 487
points and adding 227 rebounds to earn confererence MVP honors last season.
“When the game is on the line Crystal goes and gets it,” said
McHenry. “She is a determined player who will have another great
Senior All-MIAA First Team

year. She is tough to
guard and is one of
the best players and
athletes in this
league.”
Carissa Goeglein, a
senior from Yuma,
Colo. via Western
Nebraska Community
College, burst on to
the scene last season
a s a junior transfer
despite playing an
unfamiliar position in
the post. Goeglein
averaged 14.4 points
and 5.5 rebounds a
game to earn first
team All-MIAA honors after playing
mostly on the wing
previously in her
career.
“She’s the ultimate
team player who will
do what it takes to
Senior
win,” McHenry said of
All-American
Goeglein. “This year
she has a chance to
Crystal Walker
be
even
better
because she’s more comfortable in our system.”
Senior guards Bethany McGraw of Manhattan and Kristy
Chapman of Leavenworth will add even more experience and talent in the backcourt after starting the past two seasons for the
Lady Blues.
McGraw has been the Lady Blues top ball handler and had a lot
to do with last year’s team success by being the squad’s defensive
stopper at guard. She dished out 67 assists a year ago and will be
looked on as a team leader again this season.
Chapman has been a steady perfomer for the Lady Blues and is
currently No. 24 on the Washburn all-time scoring charts with 718
career points. She led Washburn with 28 3-pointers last season
and looks again to be the most consistent scoring threat from the
perimeter this season. She also was the team’s leading distributor
of the ball, dishing out a team-high 85 assists last season.
Four more first-year additions provided valuable minutes of the
bench for the Lady Blues last season. Senior point guard Gosia
Czarnecka, along with sophomores Maggie Diehl, Lora Westling
and Alison Garrett will see significant time again this season.
Czarnecka made strides in her first season at Washburn as a
transfer from Barton County Community College last season. She
hit 12 of 24 3-pointers and dished out 44 assists.
Garrett, a sophomore from Burlington, provided outside scoring
off the bench and finished her first second second among all-time
freshman 3-point shooters at Washburn with 24.
Westling came on the scence last year with a 19-point performance in her debut against Southwestern and continued to improve.
The Casper, Wyom. native earned two starts and led Washburn

season to earn first team all-state honors and will provide an
added perimeter scorer this season.
Two Topekans will add depth as freshman in the frountcourt for
the Lady Blues. Seaman High standout Rebekah Mueller and Dani
McHenry from Shawnee Heights bring solid high school resumes.
Mueller wass a three-time all league, all-city and all-state selection at Seaman, where she helped the Vikings to a second place
state finish at a junior. She will provide added scoring an rebounding from the post this season.
McHenry was also a three-time all-state selection at Shawnee
Heights, where she helped the T-Birds to a third place finish at
state as a junior. After finishing up the fall volleyball season she
will join the team under her father’s direction.
newcomers with 4.1 points and 2.4 rebounds a game and could
be the fifth starter this season and has the ability to play many
positions.
Diehl added minutes in the post last season, averaging 2.6
points and 1.7 rebounds. The Topeka native enters the season as
the top reserve inside player.
Newcomers
The Lady Blues have seven new players in the mix for this season, including two players who redshirted with injuries last season.
McHenry’s incoming class of freshman is very talented and versitile.
“Our newcomers will give some new looks and freshness,” said
McHenry. “They will definitely give us some options and will allow
us to score in a lot of different directions.”
Manhattan native Ineke Ingram and Lebo’s Karen DeDonder
redshirted with season-ending injuries last year.
Ingram was a highly-heralded recruit for the Lady Blues last season after earning all-state honors three seasons. She also participated in the KBCA All-Star game in 2001, before suffering a knee
injury in preseason workouts last year.
DeDonder also garnered all-state honors at Lebo, where she led
the Wolves to a 27-0 record and Class 1A state championship. She
was out with a foot injury all of last season.
The Lady Blues also added three guards and two posts to the
mix in last year’s recruiting period.
Osborne’s April Roadhouse, Baileyville’s Jill Heiman and
Independence’s Erica Redman will all give immediate help to the
Lady Blue backcourt.
Roadhouse was a first team Class 2A all-state selection and
third team all-class honors last season after leading Osborne to to
state championship. She will be another primary ball hander for
the Lady Blues in the near future.
Heiman also starred for a successful high school team at B&B
Baileyville, earning all-state honors the last two seasons. She
helped the Falcons to a 1A title as a freshman and a second place
finish as a sophomore. She will provide versatility at the guard
spots.
Redman helped Independence to the Class 4A state tournament last season, helping the Bulldogs to a 21-3 record while
averaging 21.5 points and 4.7 rebounds. She hit 59 3-pointers last
Outlook
For the first time in several seasons, Washburn is one of the
favorites in the MIAA after finishing second in the league and
making the regional tournament last season.
Making a conference title run and a return trip to the South
Central Regional tournament definitely wont be easy after the
Lady Blues thrived in an underdog role last season.
“We’ve got to be a little more creative this season and we won’t
be able to sneak up on people,” said McHenry. “There are a lot of
great teams in this league. Every year the MIAA beats up on the
MIAA.”
One change this season is the regional tournament. Previously
only six teams were invited to the 48-team national tournament,
this season the field will increase its size to 64 with eight teams
advancing from eight regionals to make up the final Elite Eight.
This season’s Elite Eight will be in St. Joseph, Mo.
Reaching that point is an ultimate goal for McHenry and his
team, but several difficult challenges lie ahead for the Lady Blues.
After opening the season with two NAIA in-state foes against
Baker and St. Mary, Washburn travels to Springfield, Mo. to take
on two teams that were regionally ranked last season in Drury and
Cameron.
The road continues with some tough competition in Florida and
two more home dates against Southwestern Oklahoma State and
Rockhurst. Needless to say McHenry and his team have a heavy
workload ahead.
“We’ve got a very tough schedule and have a chance to get
some great wins,” said McHenry. “Our ultimate goal is to get to
the regional tournament and advance.”

McHenry on Czarnecka:
Gosia made great strides last season

more comfortable this season and
give us depth at the point guard spot.

Played in 28 games, mostly as a
reserve point guard averaging 4.0
points and 1.5 assists a game. Made
12 of 24 3-pointers for a 50 percent
