Hello Eisenhower families! It was great to see so many of you
last week for conferences! Parent/Teacher/Student conferences were a
huge success and I thank you all for your partnership with us so that we
can best help your child(ren). We had an attendance rate of 98%!
Thanks for making sure that attending conferences was a priority at your
house! The upcoming weeks are prime time for student growth due to
conferences, setting upcoming learning goals, and strong collaboration
with families to ensure we are all working together on behalf of the
students.
A special highlight from the month of October was our annual
PTO sponsored Walk-a-thon! Again, the Eisenhower community came
through in a huge way by donating close to $14,000 for Eisenhower and
YOUR children! Your generosity and the generosity of the friends,
families, and neighbors who donated is much appreciated! All of the
money raised stays right here at Eisenhower and goes towards fulfilling
the mission of the PTO and Eisenhower. Field trips, additional
classroom supplies, recess equipment, and technology needs are just
some of the events and materials that are funded through this annual
(and only) fundraiser. A very special thank you is extended to
businesses who provided extra support to Eisenhower. Additional
thanks to the Marugg’s at Bicycle World for donating a portion of the
bikes as prizes, the Lockhart’s for the Domino’s Pizza certificates,
Grand Harbor Resort, Lacoma Golf Course, and to Yo So Sweet for the
gift certificates. Eisenhower, you are AWESOME!
A quick reminder about student safety and our parking lot
during arrival and dismissal… Please SLOW DOWN when entering our
upper lot for pick up and dismissal. In the morning, please pull all the
way up to our “Student Drop Off” sign and continue on following the
directions of our staff who are helping direct traffic. (The lower parking
lot loop is for bus drop off only.) Students should exit the vehicle on
the curb side only. If you need to park to walk your child into school or
to line up, please use a parking space in the lot or if none are available,
you may park on the street in the surrounding neighborhood and utilize
our sidewalks and cross walk staff to help you cross safely. Mornings
can be hurried and rushed but please use patience. Student safety is our
#1 concern! Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.
It’s almost November so ITP (formally the ITBS) tests are
upon us. Students in grades 3rd-5th will take these tests on November 4,
5, 11, 12, and 13. A letter went home in mailbags today to all families
with students in those grades who will be taking the tests. We thank
you for ensuring your child gets plenty of rest, a healthy breakfast, and
to school on time each and every day but especially on testing days.
Also in November, the Dubuque Fighting Saints Hockey Team
will be with us on November 10 for a special assembly about good
character and anti-bullying. Then they will host a special “Eisenhower
Night” for their game on Friday, November 14. Tickets have been on
sale in the Eisenhower main office at a reduced rate for anyone
interested. Go Saints!!!
The weather is starting to turn and winter feels right around the
corner so it’s time to dig out winter coats, hats, and gloves, so that
students are dressed appropriately each day. Recess on cool days can
seem quite long for children who don’t have proper coats and/or
sweatshirts.
Enjoy this month of November and take time to pause and give
thanks!
During the month of November, we will be
discussing Protective Behaviors--keeping ourselves
(and others) safe from harm. In our guidance
lessons, students will learn about green flag
words/touches--compliments, acts of kindness, etc.
and about red flag" situation---children need to
flag words/touches--hurtful, unsafe words, threats
and actions. If/when we are faced with a "red
know and feel empowered to stop the aggression
against them. We will be working on both the
preventative knowledge--avoiding situations that
can and on reactive approaches and (making a
report to parents/medical and school personnel).
One of the most essential policies that we can
enact within our homes and within our schools is to
help our children learn to have empathy and
compassion for others. As our children learn to
think past themselves (infant/toddler stage) and
into a mindset of thinking of others
(adolescent/adult stage), they will indeed be
"growing up" in their mental and emotional
capacities. At Eisenhower, we frequently discuss
that we are here in the world "to build people up
and we never tear them down."
Please feel free to discuss this concept with your
children and to make it a practice within their home
life that when they come home, it is a place to
recover, seek refuge and respite and to enjoy
peace as much as possible among family members.
School Nurse News!
~Mrs. Friederick
There have been confirmed cases of flu in Iowa and
other viral diseases that involve symptoms of an
elevated temperature, diarrhea and/or vomiting.
The CDC recommends that students stay home for at
least 24 hours after the fever is gone. The fever
should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing
medicine, such as Tylenol®. Also must be free of
diarrhea and vomiting for 24 hours. This was
implemented in the DCSD on 10-20-14. You should
stay home from work, school, travel, shopping, social
events, and public gatherings. To reduce the risk of
getting the flu, get vaccinated. Reducing illness,
reduces absenteeism from school and work.

Thank you to the Staff Appreciation Committee and all those involved in donating food and volunteer hours to
provide a meal for our staff during conferences! The teachers appreciated the delicious and thoughtful food.
The second Box Tops round ends November 26th. Box Tops can be handed in to your classrooms any time. Thanks
for clipping!
Every parent and Eisenhower employee is automatically a member of the PTO, and has voting rights at the
meetings. Our next meeting is Monday, November 17h at 6:30pm in the library. There is free childcare available.
New perspectives and ideas are always welcome, please join us.
