STRONGHURST FALL FESTIVAL
2ND ANNUAL BAGS TOURNAMENT SEPT. 19TH
FOCC’s 2nd Annual Bags Tournament will be taking place in
conjunction with the Stronghurst Fall Festival on September
19th at the Stronghurst Park. The Tournament will begin at
12pm. This is a double elimination tournament. $20 for each
team of two. Register at FOCC or online @ https://

Other Activities at the Stronghurst Fall Festival include: Craft
Vendors, 3rd Annual BBQ Cook-off Contest, Live Music, Great
Pumpkin Contest, Scarecrow Contest, Horse-drawn Wagon
Rides, Face-painting, and Kiddie Wagon Rides. The event will
conclude with a Salad Supper with Baked Potato Bar sponsored
by the Stronghurst Booster Club. Bring your lawn chairs and
enjoy the day!

9/11 DAY OF SERVICE
In honor of those we lost on
9/11 2001, AmeriCorps
VISTAs Mary Lewis, Jacob
Irish, Chelsea Castillo Macek,
Cole Nelson, Mark Muniz, and
Pete Bryne have planned a book
drive to supply books to lowincome children in Henderson,
Warren, McDonough, and Knox
counties.
In Henderson
County you can find a book drop
off at Family Outreach
Community Center or the
Henderson County Library in
Biggsville, IL.
The AmeriCorps VISTAs will
also be reading “America the
Great” to children in the four
counties on September 11, 2015.

FOCC NOW HIRING: AMERICORPS VISTA
AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Coordinator
Our poverty-alleviation team is looking for a
qualified individual to fill our AmeriCorps
VISTA Volunteer Coordinator position.
•The position will begin on November 3rd and will be a full-time,
one year commitment
Why you want to work for us:
•Changing lives is an opportunity you can’t miss out on!
•We work hard, but we play hard too! We enjoy our work and
spread joy to our families!
Some responsibilities of this role:
•Coordinating and developing relationships with our current volunteers, while continually recruiting new ones.
•Oversight of our Nutrition Program volunteer management, including in our food pantry, operation backpack, and community
garden.
•Public relations tasks, including organizing a volunteer appreciation event
•Must be willing to work some nights and weekends, as needed.
Skills and Requirements:
•We’re looking for a passionate, self-motivated person who’s able
to help change lives through our programs!
•Ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously


Operation Backpack bags!! Again,
our programs wouldn’t be
possible with you!!
Family Outreach Community
Center now serves 58 West
Central Students every week.
FOCC has budgeted about $6 a
week per student ($350/ week for
all students).
Kellsy (Leary) Scott started
volunteering for FOCC in
August 2014, serving in our
Clothing Center and assisting with Operation Backpack. Over the next few
months, Kellsy went above
and beyond by
“championing” our Operation Backpack program. She
planned menus, shopped for
food, and delivered bags to
the schools each week. In
June 2015, following Fern
Fude’s decision to allow a
“younger board member to
step forward,” we were seeking an enthusiastic member
of the community. Kellsy
graciously joined the FOCC
Board of Directors at that
time and has been an amazing asset to FOCC! Kellsy is
a former Preschool teacher
and is active in the Henderson County Fair. Thank you
for your service, Kellsy!!

FARMERS MARKET
FOCC is excited to announce that the Stronghurst Farmer’s Market will
be continue through to September 19th.
The Stronghurst Markets will open rain or shine Sept. 5 and Sept
19 from 9am to 1pm located on Broadway Street in Stronghurst, IL. In
the case of rain, markets will be moved to the shelter house at the
Stronghurst Park.
The Stronghurst Farmer’s Market offers shoppers a variety of produce,
crafts, baked goods, and much more. For more information about the

FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY
Financial Peace University (FPU) teaches God's ways of handling
money. Through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small
group activities, FPU presents biblical, practical steps to get from where
you are to where you've dreamed you could be. This plan will show you
how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and
much more! Thank you to Rich Lutz and Bi-County Insurance for
offering this course to our area, beginning September 17th at 6:30.
FPU classes meet for around an hour and a half each week for nine
weeks. Cost is $50. Call Bi-County at 627-5050 to register!

G.E.D. ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Do you know someone that is
interested in achieving their
G.E.D?
Family Outreach Community
Center is taking applications for
our G.E.D Assistance Program.
Thanks to the Moline Foundation,
FOCC has the opportunity to provide financial and educational
assistance to Henderson County
residents that would like to
achieve their General Education
Degree.
The G.E.D program offers financial support, educational guidance, and transportation to G.E.D
courses/ tests.
Henderson County residents
interested in this program should
fill out an application at the Family Outreach Community Center.
UPDATE:
We currently have 7 students
signed up for this program, as
well as 4 mentor teachers. We are
training students now, in order to
prepare them to pass the test.
Once students fully pass practice
tests and show improved
aptitude, we will cover the cost of
their testing fees.
If you would like to serve as a
mentor/teacher and help a young
adult pass their G.E.D., please call
us asap!
