devices to mobile networks
• Support for the GSMA global Specification
ASSOCIATION
• The importance of the initiative to the industry

14.25 PANEL DISCUSION: Why have multi-IMSI SIM cards not received the expected support from
the mobile market?
• What are the main concerns behind multi-IMSI SIM cards?
• Is an embedded SIM an answer to those concerns or do the same concerns remain?
INTERACTIVE • Is the enterprise market the best place to trial both solutions?
“A growing number of OEMs are embedding
connectivity in their smartphones and tablets in order to
increase the value of their devices, smooth the sales process,
and add “service revenues” to their hardware sales. Business
models can differ significantly, but there are two recurring
elements when it comes to implementing these services:
innovation in SIM card technology and embedding connectivity
with MVNO agreements and/or added “global” coverage
roaming agreements.
One of the examples is Apple:
“Many see Apple becoming a service provider of global
connectivity and replacing mobile operators in
providing connectivity services. (…) In 2014 Apple
introduced the “reprogrammable” Apple SIM - a physical
SIM card for iPad Air2 and mini3, allowing customers to
switch between mobile operators participating in the
Apple SIMinitiative. At launch, Apple’s carrier partners
included US operators AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile as well as UK carrier EE.
In June 2015, Apple introduced a new partner, GigSky, a US-based MVNO
specializing in roaming solutions. Thereafter, Apple SIM started selling in
10 markets and providing connectivity in 90 markets.” *
